Data from the HEGRA air shower array are used to set an upper limit on the emission of gamma-radiation above 25 (18) TeV from the direction of the radio bright region DR4 within the SNR G78.2 + 2.1 of 2.5 (7.1). 10^-13 cm^-2 sec^-1. The shock front of SNR G78.2 + 2.1 probably recently overtook the molecular cloud Gong 8 which then acts as a target for the cosmic rays produced within the SNR, thus leading to the expectation of enhanced gamma-radiation. Using a model of Drury, Aharonian and Völk which assumes that SNRs are the sources of galactic cosmic rays via first order Fermi acceleration, we calculated a theoretical prediction for the gamma-ray flux from the DR4 region and compared it with our experimental flux limit. Our 'best estimate' value for the predicted flux lies a factor of about 18 above the upper limit for gamma-ray energies above 25 TeV. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.

Magnetic fields can change their topology through a process known as magnetic reconnection. This process in not only important for understanding the origin and evolution of the large-scale magnetic field, but is seen as a possibly efficient particle accelerator producing cosmic rays mainly through the first-order Fermi process. In this work we study the properties of particle acceleration inserted in reconnection zones and show that the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field of test particles inserted in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) domains of reconnection without including kinetic effects, such as pressure anisotropy, the Hall term, or anomalous effects, increases exponentially. Also, the acceleration of the perpendicular component is always possible in such models. We find that within contracting magnetic islands or current sheets the particles accelerate predominantly through the first-order Fermi process, as previously described, while outside the current sheets and islands the particles experience mostly drift acceleration due to magnetic field gradients. Considering two-dimensional MHD models without a guide field, we find that the parallel acceleration stops at some level. This saturation effect is, however, removed in the presence of an out-of-plane guide field or in three-dimensional models. Therefore, we stress the importance of the guide field and fully three-dimensional studies for a complete understanding of the process of particle acceleration in astrophysical reconnection environments.

In this paper, we present multiband optical polarimetric observations of the very-high energy blazar PKS 2155-304 made simultaneously with a HESS/Fermi high-energy campaign in 2008, when the source was found to be in a low state. The intense daily coverage of the data set allowed us to study in detail the temporal evolution of the emission, and we found that the particle acceleration time-scales are decoupled from the changes in the polarimetric properties of the source. We present a model in which the optical polarimetric emission originates at the polarized mm-wave core and propose an explanation for the lack of correlation between the photometric and polarimetric fluxes. The optical emission is consistent with an inhomogeneous synchrotron source in which the large-scale field is locally organized by a shock in which particle acceleration takes place. Finally, we use these optical polarimetric observations of PKS 2155-304 at a low state to propose an origin for the quiescent gamma-ray flux of the object, in an attempt to provide clues for the source of its recently established persistent TeV emission.

In this Letter we analyze the energy distribution evolution of test particles injected in three dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of different magnetic reconnection configurations. When considering a single Sweet-Parker topology, the particles accelerate predominantly through a first-order Fermi process, as predicted in [3] and demonstrated numerically in [8]. When turbulence is included within the current sheet, the acceleration rate is highly enhanced, because reconnection becomes fast and independent of resistivity [4,11] and allows the formation of a thick volume filled with multiple simultaneously reconnecting magnetic fluxes. Charged particles trapped within this volume suffer several head-on scatterings with the contracting magnetic fluctuations, which significantly increase the acceleration rate and results in a first-order Fermi process. For comparison, we also tested acceleration in MHD turbulence, where particles suffer collisions with approaching and receding magnetic irregularities, resulting in a reduced acceleration rate. We argue that the dominant acceleration mechanism approaches a second order Fermi process in this case.

Heparin has been shown to regulate human neutrophil elastase (HNE) activity. We have assessed the regulatory effect of heparin on Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteases-1 [TIMP-1] hydrolysis by HNE employing the recombinant form of TIMP-1 and correlated FRET-peptides comprising the TIMP-1 cleavage site. Heparin accelerates 2.5-fold TIMP-1 hydrolysis by HNE. The kinetic parameters of this reaction were monitored with the aid of a FRET-peptide substrate that mimics the TIMP-1 cleavage site in pre-steady-state conditionsby using a stopped-flow fluorescence system. The hydrolysis of the FRET-peptide substrate by HNE exhibits a pre-steady-state burst phase followed by a linear, steady-state pseudo-first-order reaction. The HNE acylation step (k(2)=21 +/- 1 s(-1)) was much higher than the HNE deacylation step (k(3)=0.57 +/- 0.05 s(-1)). The presence of heparin induces a dramatic effect in the pre-steady-state behavior of HNE. Heparin induces transient lag phase kinetics in HNE cleavage of the FRET-peptide substrate. The pre-steady-state analysis revealed that heparin affects all steps of the reaction through enhancing the ES complex concentration, increasing k(1) 2.4-fold and reducing k(-1) 3.1-fold. Heparin also promotes a 7.8-fold decrease in the k(2) value, whereas the k(3) value in the presence of heparin was increased 58-fold. These results clearly show that heparin binding accelerates deacylation and slows down acylation. Heparin shifts the HNE pH activity profile to the right, allowing HNE to be active at alkaline pH. Molecular docking and kinetic analysis suggest that heparin induces conformational changes in HNE structure. Here, we are showing for the first time that heparin is able to accelerate the hydrolysis of TIMP-1 by HNE. The degradation of TIMP-1is associated to important physiopathological states involving excessive activation of MMPs.

Context. It was proposed earlier that the relativistic ejections observed in microquasars could be produced by violent magnetic reconnection episodes at the inner disk coronal region (de Gouveia Dal Pino & Lazarian 2005). Aims. Here we revisit this model, which employs a standard accretion disk description and fast magnetic reconnection theory, and discuss the role of magnetic reconnection and associated heating and particle acceleration in different jet/disk accretion systems, namely young stellar objects (YSOs), microquasars, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Methods. In microquasars and AGNs, violent reconnection episodes between the magnetic field lines of the inner disk region and those that are anchored in the black hole are able to heat the coronal/disk gas and accelerate the plasma to relativistic velocities through a diffusive first-order Fermi-like process within the reconnection site that will produce intermittent relativistic ejections or plasmons. Results. The resulting power-law electron distribution is compatible with the synchrotron radio spectrum observed during the outbursts of these sources. A diagram of the magnetic energy rate released by violent reconnection as a function of the black hole (BH) mass spanning 10(9) orders of magnitude shows that the magnetic reconnection power is more than sufficient to explain the observed radio luminosities of the outbursts from microquasars to low luminous AGNs. In addition, the magnetic reconnection events cause the heating of the coronal gas, which can be conducted back to the disk to enhance its thermal soft X-ray emission as observed during outbursts in microquasars. The decay of the hard X-ray emission right after a radio flare could also be explained in this model due to the escape of relativistic electrons with the evolving jet outburst. In the case of YSOs a similar magnetic configuration can be reached that could possibly produce observed X-ray flares in some sources and provide the heating at the jet launching base, but only if violent magnetic reconnection events occur with episodic, very short-duration accretion rates which are similar to 100-1000 times larger than the typical average accretion rates expected for more evolved (T Tauri) YSOs.

The interlayer magnetoresistance of layered metals in a tilted magnetic field is calculated for two distinct models for the interlayer transport. The first model involves coherent interlayer transport, and makes use of results of semiclassical or Bloch-Boltzmann transport theory. The second model involves weakly incoherent interlayer transport where the electron is scattered many times within a layer before tunneling into the next layer. The results are relevant to the interpretation of experiments on angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) in quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional organic metals. We find that the dependence of the magnetoresistance on the direction of the magnetic field is identical for both models except when the field is almost parallel to the layers. An important implication of this result is that a three-dimensional Fermi surface is not necessary for the observation of the Yamaji and Danner oscillations seen in quasi-two- and quasi-one-dimensional metals, respectively. A universal expression is given for the dependence of the resistance at AMRO maxima and minima on the magnetic field and scattering time (and thus the temperature). We point out three distinctive features of coherent interlayer transport: (i) a beat frequency in the magnetic oscillations of quasi-two-dimensional systems, (ii) a peak in the angular-dependent magnetoresistance when the field is sufficiently large and parallel to the layers, and (iii) a crossover from a linear to a quadratic field dependence for the magnetoresistance when the field is parallel to the layers. An algorithm for explicit integration of structural dynamics problems with multiple time steps is proposed that averages accelerations to obtain subcycle states at a nodal interface between regions integrated with different time steps. With integer time step ratios, the resulting subcycle updates at the interface sum to give the same effect as a central difference update over a major cycle. The algorithm is shown to have good accuracy, and stability properties in linear elastic analysis similar to those of constant velocity subcycling algorithms. The implementation of a generalised form of the algorithm with non-integer time step ratios is presented. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper studies the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem having in mind the generalization provided by Fractional Calculus (FC). The study starts by addressing the classical formulation, based on the standard integer order differential calculus and evaluates the time and frequency responses. A first generalization to be investigated consists in the direct replacement of the springs by fractional elements of the dissipative type. It is observed that the responses settle rapidly and no relevant phenomena occur. A second approach consists of replacing the springs by a blend of energy extracting and energy inserting elements of symmetrical fractional order with amplitude modulated by quadratic terms. The numerical results reveal a response close to chaotic behaviour.

In this chapter, a complete characterization of the angular velocity and angular acceleration for rigid bodies in spatial multibody systems are presented. For both cases, local and global formulations are described taking into account the advantages of using Euler parameters. In this process, the transformation between global and local components of the angular velocity and time derivative of the Euler parameters are analyzed and discussed in this chapter.

El avance en la potencia de cómputo en nuestros días viene dado por la paralelización del procesamiento, dadas las características que disponen las nuevas arquitecturas de hardware. Utilizar convenientemente este hardware impacta en la aceleración de los algoritmos en ejecución (programas). Sin embargo, convertir de forma adecuada el algoritmo en su forma paralela es complejo, y a su vez, esta forma, es específica para cada tipo de hardware paralelo. En la actualidad los procesadores de uso general más comunes son los multicore, procesadores paralelos, también denominados Symmetric Multi-Processors (SMP). Hoy en día es difícil hallar un procesador para computadoras de escritorio que no tengan algún tipo de paralelismo del caracterizado por los SMP, siendo la tendencia de desarrollo, que cada día nos encontremos con procesadores con mayor numero de cores disponibles. Por otro lado, los dispositivos de procesamiento de video (Graphics Processor Units - GPU), a su vez, han ido desarrollando su potencia de cómputo por medio de disponer de múltiples unidades de procesamiento dentro de su composición electrónica, a tal punto que en la actualidad no es difícil encontrar placas de GPU con capacidad de 200 a 400 hilos de procesamiento paralelo. Estos procesadores son muy veloces y específicos para la tarea que fueron desarrollados, principalmente el procesamiento de video. Sin embargo, como este tipo de procesadores tiene muchos puntos en común con el procesamiento científico, estos dispositivos han ido reorientándose con el nombre de General Processing Graphics Processor Unit (GPGPU). A diferencia de los procesadores SMP señalados anteriormente, las GPGPU no son de propósito general y tienen sus complicaciones para uso general debido al límite en la cantidad de memoria que cada placa puede disponer y al tipo de procesamiento paralelo que debe realizar para poder ser productiva su utilización. Los dispositivos de lógica programable, FPGA, son dispositivos capaces de realizar grandes cantidades de operaciones en paralelo, por lo que pueden ser usados para la implementación de algoritmos específicos, aprovechando el paralelismo que estas ofrecen. Su inconveniente viene derivado de la complejidad para la programación y el testing del algoritmo instanciado en el dispositivo. Ante esta diversidad de procesadores paralelos, el objetivo de nuestro trabajo está enfocado en analizar las características especificas que cada uno de estos tienen, y su impacto en la estructura de los algoritmos para que su utilización pueda obtener rendimientos de procesamiento acordes al número de recursos utilizados y combinarlos de forma tal que su complementación sea benéfica. Específicamente, partiendo desde las características del hardware, determinar las propiedades que el algoritmo paralelo debe tener para poder ser acelerado. Las características de los algoritmos paralelos determinará a su vez cuál de estos nuevos tipos de hardware son los mas adecuados para su instanciación. En particular serán tenidos en cuenta el nivel de dependencia de datos, la necesidad de realizar sincronizaciones durante el procesamiento paralelo, el tamaño de datos a procesar y la complejidad de la programación paralela en cada tipo de hardware. Today´s advances in high-performance computing are driven by parallel processing capabilities of available hardware architectures. These architectures enable the acceleration of algorithms when thes ealgorithms are properly parallelized and exploit the specific processing power of the underneath architecture. Most current processors are targeted for general pruposes and integrate several processor cores on a single chip, resulting in what is known as a Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) unit. Nowadays even desktop computers make use of multicore processors. Meanwhile, the industry trend is to increase the number of integrated rocessor cores as technology matures. On the other hand, Graphics Processor Units (GPU), originally designed to handle only video processing, have emerged as interesting alternatives to implement algorithm acceleration. Current available GPUs are able to implement from 200 to 400 threads for parallel processing. Scientific computing can be implemented in these hardware thanks to the programability of new GPUs that have been denoted as General Processing Graphics Processor Units (GPGPU).However, GPGPU offer little memory with respect to that available for general-prupose processors; thus, the implementation of algorithms need to be addressed carefully. Finally, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are programmable devices which can implement hardware logic with low latency, high parallelism and deep pipelines. Thes devices can be used to implement specific algorithms that need to run at very high speeds. However, their programmability is harder that software approaches and debugging is typically time-consuming. In this context where several alternatives for speeding up algorithms are available, our work aims at determining the main features of thes architectures and developing the required know-how to accelerate algorithm execution on them. We look at identifying those algorithms that may fit better on a given architecture as well as compleme
