The self-assembly of layered molybdenum disulfide–graphene (MoS2–Gr) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by electrostatic attraction into a novel hybrid nanomaterial (HRP–MoS2–Gr) is reported. The properties of the MoS2–Gr were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). UV–vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicate that the native structure of the HRP is maintained after the assembly, implying good biocompatibility of MoS2–Gr nanocomposite. Furthermore, the HRP–MoS2–Gr composite is utilized as a biosensor, which displays electrocatalytic activity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with high sensitivity (679.7 μA mM−1 cm−2), wide linear range (0.2 μM–1.103 mM), low detection limit (0.049 μM), and fast amperometric response. In addition, the biosensor also exhibits strong anti-interference ability, satisfactory stability and reproducibility. These desirable electrochemical properties are attributed to the good biocompatibility and electron transport efficiency of the MoS2–Gr composite, as well as the high loading of HRP. Therefore, this biosensor is potentially suitable for H2O2 analysis in environmental, pharmaceutical, food or industrial applications.

A novel electrochemical biosensor, DNA/hemin/nafion–graphene/GCE, was constructed for the analysis of the benzo(a)pyrene PAH, which can produce DNA damage induced by a benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) enzyme-catalytic product. This biosensor was assembled layer-by-layer, and was characterized with the use of cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and atomic force microscopy. Ultimately, it was demonstrated that the hemin/nafion–graphene/GCE was a viable platform for the immobilization of DNA. This DNA biosensor was treated separately in benzo(a)pyrene, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and in their mixture, respectively, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis showed that an oxidation peak was apparent after the electrode was immersed in H2O2. Such experiments indicated that in the presence of H2O2, hemin could mimic cytochrome P450 to metabolize benzo(a)pyrene, and a voltammogram of its metabolite was recorded. The DNA damage induced by this metabolite was also detected by electrochemical impedance and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Finally, a novel, indirect DPV analytical method for BaP in aqueous solution was developed based on the linear metabolite versus BaP concentration plot; this method provided a new, indirect, quantitative estimate of DNA damage.

Dimethylzine (DMZn) was used as a p-type dopant in GaAs grown by low pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using trimethylgallium and arsine (AsH3) as source materials, The hole carrier concentrations and zinc (Zn) incorporation efficiency are studied by using the Hall effect, electrochemical capacitance voltage profiler and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, The influence of growth parameters such as DMZn mole fraction, growth temperature, and AsH, mole fraction on the Zn incorporation have been studied. The hole concentration increases with increasing DMZn and AsH3 mole fraction and decreases with increasing growth temperature. This can be explained by vacancy control model. The PL experiments were carried out as a function of hole concentration (10(17)-1.5 x 10(20) cm(-3)). The main peak shifted to lower energy and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases with increasing hole concentrations. We have obtained an empirical relation for FWHM of PL, Delta E(p)(eV) = 1.15 x 10(-8)p(1/3). We also obtained an empirical relation for the band gap shrinkage, Delta E-g in Zn doped GaAs as a function of hole concentration. The value of Delta E-g(eV) = -2.75 x 10(-8)p(1/3), indicates a significant band gap shrinkage at high doping levels, These relations are considered to provide a useful tool to determine the hole concentration in Zn doped GaAs by low temperature PL measurement. The hole concentration increases with increasing AsH3 mole fraction and the main peak is shifted to a lower energy side. This can be explained also by the vacancy control model. As the hole concentration is increased above 3.8 x 10(18) cm(-3), a shoulder peak separated from the main peak was observed in the PL spectra and disappears at higher concentrations. Silane (SiH4) was used as an n-type dopant in GaAs grown by low pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using trimethylgallium (TMGa) and arsine (AsH3) as source materials. The electron carrier concentrations and silicon (Si) incorporation efficiency are studied by using Hall effect, electrochemical capacitance voltage profiler and low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL) spectroscopy. The influence of growth parameters, such as SiH4 mole fraction, growth temperature, TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions on the Si incorporation efficiency have been studied. The electron concentration increases with increasing SIH4 mole fraction, growth temperature, and decreases with increasing TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions. The decrease in electron concentration with increasing TMGa can be explained by vacancy control model. The PL experiments were carried out as a function of electron concentration (10(17) - 1.5 x 10(18) cm(-3)). The PL main peak shifts to higher energy and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increases with increasing electron concentrations. We have obtained an empirical relation for FWHM of PL, Delta E(n) (eV) = 1.4 x 10(-8) n(1/3). We also obtained an empirical relation for the band gap shrinkage, Delta E-g in Si-doped GaAs as a function of electron concentration. The value of Delta E-g (eV) = -2.75 x 10(-8) n(1/3), indicates a significant band gap shrinkage at high doping levels. These relations are considered to provide a useful tool to determine the electron concentration in Si-doped GaAs by low temperature PL measurement. The electron concentration decreases with increasing TMGa and AsH3 mole fractions and the main peak shifts to the lower energy side. The peak shifts towards the lower energy side with increasing TMGa variation can also be explained by vacancy control model. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

GaAs/Ge heterostructures having abrupt interfaces were grown on 2degrees, 6degrees, and 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates and investigated by cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical capacitance voltage (ECV) profiler. The GaAs films were grown on off-oriented Ge substrates with growth temperature in the range of 600-700degreesC, growth rate of 3-12 mum/hr and a V/III ratio of 29-88. The lattice indexing of HRTEM exhibits an excellent lattice line matching between GaAs and Ge substrate. The PL spectra from GaAs layer on 6degrees off-cut Ge substrate shows the higher excitonic peak compared with 2degrees and 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates. In addition, the luminescence intensity from the GaAs solar cell grown on 6degrees off-cut is higher than on 9degrees off-cut Ge substrates and signifies the potential use of 6degrees off-cut Ge substrate in the GaAs solar cells industry. The ECV profiling shows an abrupt film/substrate interface as well as between various layers of the solar cell structures.

The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. Poorly crystalline mesoporous MnO2, which is suitable for supercapacitor studies, is synthesized from neutral KMnO4 aqueous solution by hydrothermal route. But it requires a high temperature (180 A degrees C) and also a long reaction time (24 h). Addition of a tri-block copolymer, namely, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (P123), which is generally used as a soft template for the synthesis of nano-structured porous materials, reduces the hydrothermal temperature to 140 A degrees C and also reaction time to 2 h. When the reaction time is increased, the product morphology changes from nanoparticles to nanorods with a concomitant decrease in BET surface area. Also, the product tends to attain crystallinity. The electrochemical capacitance properties of MnO2 synthesized under varied hydrothermal conditions are studied in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. A specific capacitance of 193 F g(-1) is obtained for the mesoporous MnO2 sample consisting of nanoparticle and nanorod mixed morphology synthesized in 6 h using P123 at 140 A degrees C.

MnO2 is electrochemically deposited on Au coated quartz crystal to study the electrochemical capacitance properties and to monitor the mass variations that accompany reversible adsorption/desorption of Na+, Mg2+ and La3+ ions during discharge/charge cycling. There is an increase in the values of specific capacitance of MnO2 with increase in charge of the cation in the electrolyte. Also, there is an increase in mass during discharge due to adsorption of cations from the electrolyte resulting from reduction of MnO2. Mass decreases during charging process due to desorption of cations. The magnitude of mass variation is approximately proportional to the atomic weight of the cationic element. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The primary objective of the present work was to study the electronic and in vitro electrochemical properties of micro-arc oxidized titania films on Cp Ti, fabricated independently in various electrolyte solutions consisting of anions such as phosphate (PO43-), borate (B4O72-), citrate (C6H5O73-) and silicate (SiO32-). Further the role of anions on the structural, morphological and compositional properties of the fabricated films was studied. All the titania films were developed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique for a fixed treatment time of 8 min under constant current mode. The surface morphology, elemental distribution, composition and structural characteristics of the films were assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thermodynamic and kinetic corrosion properties of the films were studied under simulated body fluid (SBF) conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 degrees C) by conducting chronopotentiometric and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) coupled with equivalent circuit modelling was carried out to analyse the frequency response and Mott-Schottky analysis was performed to study the semiconducting (electronic) properties of the films. Salt spray fog accelerated corrosion test was conducted for 168h as per ASTM B117 standard to corroborate the corrosion and semiconducting properties of the samples based on the visual examination. The XRD results showed that the transformation from the metastable anatase phase to the thermodynamically stable rutile phase and the crystalline growth of the respective phases were strongly influenced by the addition of anions. The SEM-EDS results demonstrated that the phosphorous (P) content in the films varied from 2.4 at% to 5.0 at% indicating that the amount of P in the films could be modified by adding an appropriate electrolyte additive. The electrochemical corrosion test results showed that the film fabricated in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte is thermodynamically and kinetically more stable compared to that of all the others. The results of the Mott-Schottky analysis indicated that all the fabricated films showed an n-type semiconducting behaviour and the film developed in citrate (C6H5O73-) containing electrolyte exhibited the lowest donor concentration and the most negative flat band potential that contributed to its highest corrosion resistance in SBF solution. The results of the salt spray accelerated corrosion tests were in agreement with those obtained from the electrochemical and Mott-Schottky analysis.

The inhibition effect of colchicine (CC) on mild steel (MS) corrosion in 1 M HCl solution has been investigated by electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, chronoamperometry and also by the gravimetric method. Polarization studies showed that CC acts as mixed type corrosion inhibitor. The inhibitor adsorption process in the MS/CC/HCl system was studied at different temperatures (303-333 K). The adsorption of CC on MS surface is an exothermic process and obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Based on potential of zero charge values and quantum chemical parameters, the mechanism of adsorption has been proposed.

Nanostructuring boron-doped diamond (BDD) films increases their sensitivity and performance when used as electrodes in electrochemical environments. We have developed a method to produce such nanostructured, porous electrodes by depositing BDD thin film onto a densely packed "forest" of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs had previously been exposed to a suspension of nanodiamond in methanol causing them to clump together into "teepee" or "honeycomb" structures. These nanostructured CNT/BDD composite electrodes have been extensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Not only do these electrodes possess the excellent, well-known characteristics associated with BDD (large potential window, chemical inertness, low background levels), but also they have electroactive areas and double-layer capacitance values ∼450 times greater than those for the equivalent flat BDD electrodes.

In this paper, electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) method was first used to detect enzymatic reaction in bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) based on immobilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the BLMs supported by the redox polyaniline (PAn) film. By SPR kinetic curve in situ monitoring the redox transformation of PAn film resulted from the reaction between HRP and PAn, the enzymatic reaction of HRP with H2O2, was successfully analyzed by electrochemical SPR spectroscopy.

The electrochemical corrosion behavior of Mg-6Al-0.4Mn and Mg-6Al-4RE-0.4Mn (RE = Mischmetal) alloys is investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results of corrosion process, polarization behavior, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the alloys reveal that Mg-6Al-4RE-0.4Mn exhibits enhanced corrosion resistance. The addition of RE stabilizes the solid solution and modifies the passive film through a finer microstructure.

Aptamers, which are in vitro selected functional oligonucleotides, have been employed to design novel biosensors (i.e., aptasensors) due to their inherent selectivity, affinity, and their multifarious advantages over traditional recognition elements. In this work, we reported a multifunctional reusable label-free electrochemical biosensor based on an integrated aptamer for parallel detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and alpha-thrombin, by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). A An electrode as the sensing surface was modified with a part DNA duplex which contained a 5'-thiolated partly complementary strand (PCS) and a mixed aptamer (MBA).
