This study aimed to investigate the independent and additive effects of counter-resistance training (RT) and soy isoflavone supplement (ISO) on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover in postmenopausal women. This study used a placebo-controlled, double-blinded (soy), randomized two (ISO vs. placebo) x two (RT vs. no RT) design. Eighty sedentary postmenopausal women, aged 45-70 years, were randomly assigned to one of four groups (71 completed a 9-month intervention): RT+ISO (n=15); no RT+ISO (n=20); RT+placebo (n=18); no RT+placebo (n=18). Participants randomized to ISO received 100mg/ day/oral of soy isoflavone; and those to RT attended supervised counter-resistance training sessions at least twice a week. At baseline and 9-month, BMD was estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Serum levels of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), osteocalcin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were measured as bone turnover. ANOVA with time as the repeated measure and test t were used in the statistical analysis. After 9 months of intervention, neither ISO nor RT alone affected BMD at any site or levels of CTX, osteocalcin, and IGF-1 (p>0.05). ISO and RT had no additive effects on BMD and bone turnover. RT groups showed significantly increased muscle strength (+ 35.2%) (p=0.02). We found no additive effects of resistance training and soy isoflavone on bone mineral density or bone turnover in postmenopausal women after 9-months.

Introduction: The myofascial pain syndrome (SDM) is one of the most common causes of musculoskeletal pain. One of the possible treatments for SDM is the type of physiotherapy myofascial manipulation. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of manipulative technique with myofascial pain threshold before and after applying the technique in athletes during competition period. Methods: Participated in the study 62 subjects of both genders, aged between 14 and 38 (19.64 + 4.89), who had myofascial pain syndrome, 32 oh the treatment group and 30 divided equally between control group and the placebo group. All were athletes and operated by the Department of Sport and Leisure in the city of Marilia – SP and were in competitive period. The volunteers were evaluated according to their musculoskeletal symptoms to prove the necessity of performing the technique of myofascial manipulation. Confi rmed the need to assess the pressure pain threshold (LDP) using a digital dynamometer. After the measurement, patients underwent treatment or using the technique of myofascial manipulation, or a sliding surface for the placebo or no treatment for the control group followed by the immediate reassessment of the LDP. Results: The results were normalized by Kolmogrov-Smirnov test (KS). Through the ANOVA test found no differences between the initial LDP thresholds between groups. To compare pre and post LDP of the three groups we used the paired t test. Signifi cant difference (p=0.0001) between the values of pain threshold before and after application of myofascial manipulation for the treated group and not signifi cant for the control group (p=0.45) and placebo (p=0.16). Conclusion: We conclude then that the myofascial manipulation technique is able to increase pain threshold after micro-musculoskeletal injuries in athletes in competitive period.

Introduction: Physical exercise are related to high oxygen consumption, leading to increase on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and subsequent oxidative stress. Concomitantly, physical training can improve the antioxidant defense systems, reducing the deleterious activity of ROS. The yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) has several bioactive compounds in its composition, providing important antioxidant activity in improving defense systems and reducing the damage caused by ROS. Few studies related to yerba mate with antioxidant effects during exercise. Objective: Evaluate whether the consumption-based drink yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is able to increase the total antioxidant performance (TAP) after an exhaustive test on a treadmill. Methods: The sample counted with 15 female soccers players from Botucatu-SP female soccer team with a mean age of 22.1 ± 4.2 years. For laboratory tests , it was evaluated: triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and fractions, glucose and gamma-GT were dosed by dry chemistry (Vitros® System, Johnson & Johnson). LDL-cholesterol was obtained by Friedwald formula. Total antioxidant performance (TAP) was obtained by the method of fluorescence assay for the measurement of plasma. Weight, height and body mass index (IMC) were measured, percentage of body fat was obtained by bioeletrical impedance analysis (Biodinâmics, modelo 450, USA). Arterial blood pressure was checked by auscultatory method and cardiorespiratory fitness was determined by ergoespirometric test (Ramp Protocol). Maltodextrin was supplemented (30 g in 400 ml) 30 minutes after M0 with placebo (400 ml) or mate (5 g in 400 ml of water). Statistical analysis: ANOVA for repeated measures followed by Tukey's test set, p<0.05. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of 0.05% sodium fluoride solutions containing 2.5% or 12.5% xylitol on the number of Streptococcus mutans in the human mouth. Fifty boys between 8 and 16 years of age participated in this double-blind crossover study. Of the original 50 boys, 33 finished the study. Participants were randomly divided into four groups. The following solutions were employed: placebo solution; 0.05% sodium fluoride solution; 0.05% sodium fluoride + 2.5% xylitol + 2% sorbitol; 0.05% sodium fluoride + 12.5% xylitol + 2% sorbitol. Each solution was used for a 28-day period (20 mL/day, twice a day), with a 10-day washout period between solutions. There were no significant differences (P = 0.32) between the two xylitol-containing solutions (2.5% vs. 12.5%) concerning the number of Streptococcus mutans. However, there was a significant difference between these two xylitol-containing solutions and the sodium fluoride and placebo solutions (P < 0.001). Our results suggest that the 0.05% sodium fluoride solutions containing either 2.5% or 12.5% xylitol caused a significant reduction in the number of Streptococcus mutans.

OBJETIVO: Investigar os efeitos dos florais Impatiens, Cherry Plum, White Chestnut e Beech em pessoas ansiosas. MÉTODOS: Estudo de natureza quantitativa, ensaio clínico randomizado, duplo cego. Os dados foram coletados entre maio e agosto de 2010 com 34 trabalhadores do Centro de Aperfeiçoamento em Ciências da Saúde da Fundação Zerbini. A ansiedade foi avaliada por meio do Inventário de Diagnóstico da Ansiedade Traço - Estado em dois momentos diferentes, no início e final da intervenção. RESULTADOS: Como resultado observou-se que o grupo que fez uso das essências florais teve uma diminuição maior e estatisticamente significativa no nível de ansiedade em comparação ao grupo placebo. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que as essências florais tiveram efeito positivo na diminuição da ansiedade.
