Excellent superplastic elongations (in excess of 1,200%) were achieved in a commercial cast AZ31 alloy processed by low temperature equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with a back-pressure to produce a bimodal grain structure. In contrast, AZ31 alloy processed by ECAP at temperatures higher than 200 °C showed a reasonably uniform grain structure and relatively low ductility. It is suggested that a bimodal grain structure is advantageous because the larger grains contribute to strain hardening thus delaying the onset of necking, while grain boundary sliding associated with small grains provides a stabilizing effect due to enhanced strain rate sensitivity. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The equal channel angular processing (ECAP) technique has been applied to an automotive aluminium alloy sheet (A6111). The technique utilizes a machine that was specially designed for this purpose at Monash University. It was determined that ECAP is able to refine the grain size of the sheet, diminish the detrimental as-rolled texture components in the sheet and retain an acceptable level of bi-axial ductility such as is required during the automotive forming process. Experiments were carried out on annealed, as-received sheets that were subjected to either one or two passes through the ECAP machine. For the second ECAP pass, the sheet could be processed in the same orientation as the first pass (route A) or it could be rotated 180° about the direction of feeding (route C). It was determined that route A produced marginally improved properties compared to sheet processed via route C, and that due to the frictional heating generated during the second pass, a significant amount of recovery occurred in the sheet such that an improved combination of texture and formability resulted after two passes compared to the same sheet exposed to only a single pass.

An investigation was initiated to evaluate the feasibility of using equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to obtain high superplastic elongations in the AZ31 alloy with a back pressure producing a bimodal grain structure. Processing by ECAP was performed using a die with an angle of 90 ° between the two parts of the channel and a ram velocity of 15-20 mm/sec. Some pressing were conducted with a back-pressure by making use of a backward punch in the exit channel of the die. Molybdenum disulphide and a graphite spray were used as lubricants and billets were pressed using processing route B c in which each billet is rotated by 90 °. The pressing were conducted at temperatures in the range from 423 to 523 K and every billet was quenched in water after each pass. The significance of the bimodal microstructure is attributed to the ability of the larger grains to more easily accommodate grain boundary sliding through intragranular slip and twinning and to contribute to the strain hardening capability.

Application of damage model in combination with finite element analysis to design and optimization of equal channel angular pressing - conform of commercially pure titanium against ductile failure is demonstrated. The properties required for precise simulation of the process and prediction of damage accumulation (equivalent stress as function of equivalent strain and temperature and low bound ductility function) are obtained in the temperature interval 20-400 °C and described in details.

In this work, compaction by warm equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with back pressure was used to produce Ti-6Al-4V billets from both commercially pure (CP) titanium and titanium hydride (TiH 2) powders, which were mixed with pulverised binary Al-V master alloys of two distinct Al/V ratios and with elemental aluminium powder to arrive at the nominal alloy composition. It was demonstrated that the right combination of temperature, high hydrostatic pressure and plastic shear deformation permits consolidation of the powder mixture to maximum green densities of 99.26%. Moreover, after direct compaction of blended elemental powders by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with back pressure, the sintering temperature required for chemical and microstructural homogenisation of the compacts could be reduced by 150-250°C. This was possible due to high green density, increased contact area between powder particles and the formation of fast diffusion paths associated with grain refinement by severe plastic deformation. The sintered Ti-6Al-4V billets exhibited a maximum density of 99.88%, Vickers hardness of 409-445 HV1 and ultimate tensile strength in the range of 1000-1080MPa. In contrast to findings of other authors, the use of TiH 2 powders in conjunction with ECAP processing did not bring any benefits with regard to the production of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

The effect of back pressure during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) on deformation-induced porosity is investigated. While percolating porosity was found after 4 ECAP passes in the absence of back pressure, no percolation was detected when a back pressure of 200 MPa was applied. However, after ECAP with back pressure continued to 8 passes, percolating porosity did appear. The nature of the percolating porosity developed in severely deformed materials is discussed.

Ternary Mg-Y-Zn alloys have attracted considerable attention from researchers due to their excellent mechanical properties and unique microstructures, particularly from the presence of long-period stacking-order (LPSO) phases. Microstructural variations and the resulting mechanical properties can be affected by various processing routes, particularly those involving severe plastic deformation of a cast billet. The approach used in this work was based on subjecting cast Mg92Y4Zn4 (composition in wt%) billet to severe plastic deformation by three different routes, namely equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), high pressure torsion (HPT) and ECAP followed by HPT, with the aim of refining the microstructure and improving mechanical properties. Samples processed by ECAP were annealed by post-processing and tested in compression and tension. The effect of the processing route and the process parameters on the microstructure and the hardness of the Mg-Y-Zn alloy is reported. An overall positive effect of annealing treatment on the mechanical properties of ECAP-processed alloy is demonstrated. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Commercial purity titanium with an average grain size in the low sub-micron range was produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). Attachment of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) to the surface of conventional coarse grained and ECAP-modified titanium was studied. It was demonstrated that the attachment and spreading of hMSCs in the initial stages (up to 24h) of culture was enhanced by grain refinement. Surface characterization by a range of techniques showed that the main factor responsible for the observed acceleration of hMSC attachment and spreading on titanium due to grain refinement in the bulk is the attendant changes in surface topography on the nanoscale. These results indicate that, in addition to its superior mechanical properties, ECAP-modified titanium possesses improved biocompatibility, which makes it to a potent candidate for applications in medical implants.

In ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques such as ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), bimodal grain size distributions have been observed under different circumstances, for example shortly after ECAP, after rest or anneal and/or after mild cyclic deformation at rather low homologous temperature. It has been shown that the mechanical monotonic and fatigue properties of some UFG materials can be modified (sometimes enhanced) by introducing a bimodal grain size distribution by a mild annealing treatment which leads, in some cases, to a good combination of strength and ductility. Here, the conditions under which bimodal grain size distributions evolve by (adiabatic) heating during ECAP and during subsequent annealing or cyclic deformation will be explored, and the effects on the mechanical properties, as studied by the authors and as reported so far in the literature, will be reviewed and discussed. In particular, the role of temperature rise during ECAP will be considered in some detail.

Results of small-angle X-ray scattering and high-precision density measurements showed that the application of counterpressure during the equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) of ultrafine-grained copper leads to a decrease in nanoporosity and an increase in mechanical properties of the ECAP-processed metal.

Densification of metallic powders by means of extrusion is regarded as a very attractive processing technique that allows obtaining a high level of relative density of the compact. However, the uniformity of the relative density depends on that of strain distribution and on the processing parameters. Several variants of extrusion can be used for compaction of metal particulates, including the conventional extrusion (CE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), often referred to as equal-channel angular extrusion. Each of these processes has certain advantages and drawbacks with respect to compaction. A comparative study of these two extrusion processes influencing the relative density of compacts has been conducted by numerical simulation using commercial finite element software DEFORM2D. The results have been validated by experiments with titanium and magnesium powders and chips.

The microstructure, fatigue crack growth behaviour and hardness of ultra fine grained 6061 aluminium alloy obtained by equal angle channel processing was studied. ECAP resulted in significant grain refinement down to the sub micron level and corresponding increase in hardness. Results point to a similar fatigue threshold stress intensity range and fatigue crack growth rates for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes of ECAP.

In this work, a high-manganese Fe-23Mn-1.5Al-0.3C Twinning-Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel was subjected to plastic shear deformation using Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) at 300 °C following route BC and additional annealing. The microstructure evolution during both deformation by ECAP and subsequent annealing was investigated and correlated with the mechanical properties. The successive grain refinement during ECAP was promoted by two parallel mechanisms, namely dislocation driven grain fragmentation and twin fragmentation, and accounted for the ultra-high strength. In addition, due to the relatively low volume fraction of deformation twins after ECAP at 300 °C, further contribution of deformation twinning during room temperature deformation allowed additional work-hardening capacity and elongation. During subsequent recovery annealing the ultra-fine grains and deformation twins were thermally stable, which supported retainment of the high yield strength along with regained uniform elongation. For the first time, the texture evolution during ECAP and during the following heat treatment was analyzed. After 1, 2, and 4 ECAP passes a transition texture with the characteristic texture components of both high- and low-SFE materials developed. During the following heat treatment the texture evolution proceeded similar to that observed in the same material after cold rolling. Retaining of the ECAP texture components due to oriented nucleation at grain boundaries and triple junctions as well as annealing twinning accounted for the formation of a weak, retained ECAP texture after recrystallization.

Microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, formability, and texture development were determined for AA6111 samples processed by asymmetric rolling (ASR) with different roll friction, velocity, or diameters, conventional rolling (CR), and equal-channel-angular pressing (ECAP). Highly elongated or sheared grain structures were developed during ASR/CR and ECAP, respectively. ASR led to improved r-values and formability compared with CR primarily as a result of the development of moderate shear-texture components analogous to those developed during ECAP of billet material. ASR based on different roll diameters gave the best combination of strength, ductility, and formability.

The influence of the ultrafine crystallinity of commercial purity grade 2 (as-received) titanium and titanium modified by equal channel angular pressing (modified titanium) on bacterial attachment was studied. A topographic profile analysis of the surface of the modified titanium revealed a complex morphology of the surface. Its prominent micro- and nano-scale features were 100-200-nm-scale undulations with 10-15 microm spacing. The undulating surfaces were nano-smooth, with height variations not exceeding 5-10 nm. These surface topography characteristics were distinctly different from those of the as-received samples, where broad valleys (up to 40-60 microm) were detected, whose inner surfaces exhibited asperities approximately 100 nm in height spaced at 1-2 microm. It was found that each of the three bacteria strains used in this study as adsorbates, viz. Staphylococcus aureus CIP 68.5, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9025 and Escherichia coli K12, responded differently to the two types of titanium surfaces. Extreme grain refinement by ECAP resulted in substantially increased numbers of cells attached to the surface compared to as-received titanium. This enhanced degree of attachment was accompanied with an increased level of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production by the bacteria.
