Cuticular hydrocarbons play important roles as chemical signatures of individuals, castes, sex and brood. They also can mediate the regulation of egg laying in ants, by informing directly or indirectly the reproductive status of queens. In this study we asked whether cuticular hydrocarbon profiles are correlated with castes and sex of Camponotus textor. Cuticular hydrocarbons were extracted from part of a mature colony (80 workers, 27 major workers, 27 queens, 27 virgin queens and 27 males). Results showed that cuticular hydrocarbons varied quantitatively and qualitatively among the groups and this variation was sufficiently strong to allow separation of castes and genders. We discuss the specificity of some compounds as possible regulatory compounds of worker tasks and reproduction in C. textor.

Insect cuticular hydrocarbons including relatively non-volatile chemicals play important roles in cuticle protection and chemical communication. The conventional procedures for extracting cuticular compounds from insects require toxic solvents, or non-destructive techniques that do not allow storage of subsequent samples, such as the use of SPME fibers. In this study, we describe and tested a non-lethal process for extracting cuticular hydrocarbons with styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers, and illustrate the method with two species of bees and one species of beetle. The results demonstrate that these compounds can be efficiently trapped by ChromosorbA (R) (SUPELCO) and that this method can be used as an alternative to existing methods.

Objective: To analyze, using a literature review, Pulmonary Rehabilitation (RP) Programs in lung transplant. Methods: A literature review in July 2014 in Ebsco Host, Periódicos Capes, BVS and Science Direct data bases using descriptors in English (“lung transplantation”, “lung transplant” AND/OR “rehabilitation”) and Portuguese (“reabilitação” AND/OR “transplante pulmonar”). The eligibility criterions were interventional studies of PR before and/or after lung transplant; participants who were candidates to lung transplant or lung transplant recipients; studies that applied any kind of PR program (hospital-based, homebased or outpatient) and articles published in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Literature reviews, guidelines and case reports were excluded. The search process yielded 46 articles of which two were duplicated. After title and abstract screening 13 articles remained for full text reading. Six studies met the inclusion eligibility and were included in the review. Results: The studies involved patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis. Pulmonary function, exercise capacity, quality of life (QoL) and quadriceps force were evaluated. Most interventions were outpatient programs with three months duration, three times a week and session with at least one hour. Protocols included physical training, educational approach and just one included nutritional, psychiatric and social assistant follow-up. The studies presented significant change in the six-minute walking distance, QoL and quadriceps force after PR programs. Conclusion: This review showed the benefits of the PR in the QoL and exercise capacity contributing to the Health Promotion of the patients.

Introdução: A avaliação da força muscular é um parâmetro importante para a área de atuação da Fisioterapia como meio de diagnóstico, prognostico, planeamento de tratamentos e avaliação das intervenções terapêuticas. Objetivo: Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo determinar qual a melhor posição da anca para que haja a produção do máximo momento de força muscular e a sua relação com o maior sinal electromiográfico. Participantes: A realização do presente estudo contou com a participação de 30 indivíduos saudáveis, correspondendo a 60 membros inferiores, de ambos os sexos com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e 22 anos sem restrição quanto à prática ou não de atividade física. Metodologia: O protocolo experimental que decorreu no laboratório de fisioterapia da ESTeSC, constou na recolha de informação acerca de parâmetros eletromiográficos de três porções musculares do quadricípite e de picos de momento de força durante as contrações isométricas. A tarefa consistiu na extensão do joelho, numa posição fixa de 5º de flexão, com a anca posicionada em três ângulos clínicos de 25º, 55º e 85º de flexão contra uma resistência externa, oferecida pelo dinamómetro isocinético Biodex System 3. Resultados/Conclusão: Verificou-se que o quadricípite manifestou um maior momento de força na posição de 25º de flexão da anca. Observou-se que apenas a porção muscular do Reto Femoral foi influenciada pela variação da posição articular da anca, manifestando uma maior percentagem de sinal electromiográfico na posição de 25º de flexão da anca e que a relação eletromiográfica/força teve valores mais elevados na posição de 25º de flexão da anca.
