The dissertation analyses the political culture of Sweden during the reign of King Gustav III (1771-1792). This period commonly referred to as the Gustavian era followed the so-called Age of Liberty ending half a century of strong parliamentary rule in Sweden. The question at the heart of this study engages with the practice of monarchical rule under Gustav III, its ideological origins and power-political objectives as well as its symbolic expression. The study thereby addresses the very nature of kingship. In concrete terms, why did Gustav III, his court, and his civil service vigorously pursue projects that contemporaneous political opponents and, in particular, subsequent historiography have variously pictured as irrelevant, superficial, or as products of pure vanity? The answer, the study argues, is to be found in patterns of political practice as developed and exercised by Gustav III and his administration, which formed a significant part of the political culture of Gustavian Sweden. The dissertation is divided into three parts. The first traces the use and development of royal graces chivalric orders, medals, titles, privileges, and other gifts issued by the king. The practice of royal reward is illustrated through two case studies: the 1772 coup d état that established Gustav III s rule, and the birth and baptism of the crown prince, Gustav Adolf, in 1778. The second part deals with the establishment of the Court of Appeal in Vasa in 1776. The formation of the Appeals Court was accompanied by a host of ceremonial, rhetorical, emblematic, and architectural features solidifying its importance as one of Gustav III s most symbolic administrative reform projects and hence portraying the king as an enlightened monarch par excellence. The third and final part of the thesis engages with war as a cultural phenomenon and focuses on the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790. In this study, the war against Russia is primarily seen as an arena for the king and other players to stage, create and re-create as well as articulate themselves through scenes and roles adhering to a particular cultural idiom. Its codes and symbolic forms, then, were communicated by means of theatre, literature, art, history, and classical mythology. The dissertation makes use of a host of sources: protocols, speeches, letters, diaries, newspapers, poetry, art, medals, architecture, inscriptions and registers. Traditional political source material and literary and art sources are studied as totalities, not as separate entities. Also it is argued that political and non-fictional sources cannot be understood properly without acknowledging the context of genre, literary conventions, and artistic modes. The study critically views the futile, but nonetheless almost habitual juxtaposition of the reality of images, ideas, and metaphors, and the reality of supposedly factual historical events. Significantly, the thesis presumes the symbolic dimension to be a constitutive element of reality, not its cooked up misrepresentation. This presumption is reflected in a discussion of the concept of role , which should not be anachronistically understood as roles in which the king cast himself at different times and in different situations. Neither Gustav III nor other European sovereigns of this period played the roles as rulers or majesties. Rather, they were monarchs both in their own eyes and in the eyes of their contemporaries as well as in all relations and contexts. HDL subspecies : association with low HDL-C, obesity, and metabolic syndrome

AIMS An independent, powerful coronary heart disease (CHD) predictor is a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Discoidal preβ-HDL particles and large HDL2 particles are the primary cholesterol acceptors in reverse cholesterol transport, a key anti-atherogenic HDL mechanism. The quality of HDL subspecies may provide better markers of HDL functionality than does HDL-C alone. We aimed I) to study whether alterations in the HDL subspecies profile exist in low-HDL-C subjects II) to explore the relationship of any changes in HDL subspecies profile in relation to atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome; III) to elucidate the impact of genetics and acquired obesity on HDL subspecies distribution. SUBJECTS The study consisted of 3 cohorts: A) Finnish families with low HDL-C and premature CHD (Study I: 67 subjects with familial low HDL-C and 64 controls; Study II: 83 subjects with familial low HDL-C, 65 family members with normal HDL-C, and 133 controls); B) a cohort of 113 low- and 133 high-HDL-C subjects from the Health 2000 Health Examination Survey carried out in Finland (Study III); and C) a Finnish cohort of healthy young adult twins (52 monozygotic and 89 dizygotic pairs) (Study IV). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The subjects with familial low HDL-C had a lower preβ-HDL concentration than did controls, and the low-HDL-C subjects displayed a dramatic reduction (50-70%) in the proportion of large HDL2b particles. The subjects with familial low HDL-C had increased carotid atherosclerosis measured as intima-media-thickness (IMT), and HDL2b particles correlated negatively with IMT. The reduction in both key cholesterol acceptors, preβ-HDL and HDL2 particles, supports the concept of impaired reverse cholesterol transport contributing to the higher CHD risk in low-HDL-C subjects. The family members with normal HDL-C and the young adult twins with acquired obesity showed a reduction in large HDL2 particles and an increase in small HDL3 particles, which may be the first changes leading to the lowering of HDL-C. The low-HDL-C subjects had a higher serum apolipoprotein E (apoE) concentration, which correlated positively with the metabolic syndrome components (waist circumference, TG, and glucose), highlighting the need for a better understanding of apoE metabolism in human atherosclerosis. In the twin study, the increase in small HDL3b particles was associated with obesity independent of genetic effects. The heritability estimate, of 73% for HDL-C and 46 to 63% for HDL subspecies, however, demonstrated a strong genetic influence. These results suggest that the relationship between obesity and lipoproteins depends on different elements in each subject. Finally, instead of merely elevating HDL-C, large HDL2 particles and discoidal preβ-HDL particles may provide beneficial targets for HDL-targeted therapy.

Structurally engineered cytochromes c with novel ligand-binding properties

Semisynthesis of horse heart cytochrome c and site-directed mutagenesis of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. c.) iso-1-cytochrome c have been utilized to substitute Ala for the cytochrome c heme axial ligand Met80 to yield ligand-binding proteins (horse heart Ala80cyt c and S.c. Ala80cyt c) with spectroscopic properties remarkably similar to those of myoglobin. Both species of Fe(II)Ala80cyt c form exceptionally stable dioxygen complexes with autoxidation rates 10-30x smaller and O₂ binding constants ~ 3x greater than those of myoglobin. The resistance of O₂-Fe(II)Ala80cyt c to autoxidation is attributed in part to protection of the heme site from solvent as exhibited by the exceptionally slow rate of CO binding to the heme as well as the low quantum yield of CO photodissociation.

UV/vis, EPR, and paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy indicate that at pH 7 the Fe(III)Ala80cyt c heme is low-spin with axial His-OH^- coordination and that below pH ~6.5, Fe(III)Ala80cyt cis high-spin with His-H₂O heme ligation. Significant differences in the pH dependence of the ¹H NMR spectra of S.c. Fe(III)Ala80cyt c compared to wild-type demonstrate that the axial ligands influence the conformational energetics of cytochrome c.

¹H NMR spectroscopy has been utilized to determine the solution structure of the cyanide derivative of S.c. Fe(III)Ala80cyt c. 82% of the resonances in the ¹H NMR spectrum of S.c. CN-Fe(III)Ala80cyt c have been assigned through 1D and 2D experiments. The RMSD values after restrained energy minimization of the family of 17 structures obtained from distance geometry calculations are 0.68 ± 0.11 Ã… for the backbone and 1.32 ± 0.14 Ã… for all heavy atoms. The solution structure indicates that a tyrosine in the "distal" pocket of CN-Fe(III)Ala80cyt c forms a hydrogen bond with the Fe(III)-CN unit, suggesting that it may play a role analogous to that of the distal histidine in myoglobin in stabilizing the dioxygen adduct.

Separation of scandium(III) from lanthanides(III) with room temperature ionic liquid based extraction containing Cyanex 925

The separation of Sc(III) from Y(III), La(III) and Yb(III) in [C(8)mim][PF6] containing Cyanex 925 has been investigated, and is reported in this paper. A cation exchange mechanism of Sc(III) in [C(8)mim][PF6] and Cyanex 925 is proposed by study of the influence of anionic and cationic species on the extraction. The coefficient of the equilibrium equation of Sc(III) was confirmed by slope analysis of log D-Sc vs log [Cyanex 925], and the loading capacity also confirmed the stoichiometry of Cyanex 925 to Sc(III) was close to 3:1. Infrared data for Cyanex 925 saturated with Sc(III) in [C(8)mim][PF6] indicated strong interaction between P=O of Cyanex 925 and Sc(III). In addition, the relationship between log D-Sc and temperature showed that temperature had little influence on the extraction process, and the resulting thermodynamic parameters indicated that an exothermic process was involved.

La Pax Romana (Tito Flavio Vespasiano: 69 d.C. - Marco Aurelio antonino: 180 d.C.) a la luz de la Teoría de la Estabilidad Hegemónica : aplicabilidad de una teoría moderna de las relaciones internacionales a un caso históricamente antiguo

El presente trabajo intenta aplicar la teoría de la Estabilidad Hegemónica al análisis de un sistema internacional no contemporáneo (no Estado-Westfaliano) permitiendo observar la trascendencia de las teorías de las Relaciones Internacionales en el tiempo; permite ampliar el margen de estudio de las relaciones internacionales obteniendo nuevas herramientas de análisis para futuros debates teóricos: si existe una trascendencia de las teorías de las relaciones internacionales hacia el pasado, ¿podrían ser aplicables en un futuro ausente de Estados-Nación? Ahora bien, los aportes pueden brindar sustento a la Teoría de la Estabilidad Hegemónica considerándola como la mejor propuesta para analizar la configuración del sistema internacional que permita concretar una estabilidad económico-política en las relaciones internacionales mundiales.

Efectos reglamentarios y jurisdiccionales del derecho comunitario Andino sobre el derecho administrativo colombiano

Este trabajo se soporta sobre una base conformada por dos conceptos, que constituyen el horizonte contextual de la investigación: Derecho Administrativo y Comunidad de integración. Es claro que al hablar de una Comunidad de integración específica como la Comunidad Andina (CAN), incide de forma directa en la actividad del derecho administrativo.Ha sido necesario que los países que conforman los grupos de integración económica cedan parte de sus competencias para crear un ordenamiento jurídico de orden supranacional, el cual modifica la dinámica social de las relaciones comerciales y afecta la estructura de la administración pública, haciendo que el derecho administrativo no se limite a interactuar solo con derecho nacional. Esta mutua dependencia de las políticas internas y las regionales se realiza, entonces, cada vez que existe participación y compromiso de los Estados frente a las decisiones, de carácter vinculante o no. En esa medida surge el problema de investigación tendiente a esclarecer cómo ha sido la adopción de las decisiones e interpretaciones, emanadas de los mecanismos oficiales del Derecho Comunitario Andino, en el ordenamiento jurídico colombiano. La existencia de varios puntos de vista con respecto a la obligatoriedad o no de dicha adopción, moldea un tema de suficiente amplitud y profundidad para ser estudiado en un trabajo de investigación.

Análisis de la Comunicación no Verbal en el discurso de Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. Un acercamiento a las nuevas estrategias de comunicación política en Colombia. Período 1944 - 1948

Esta investigación busca demostrar cómo las estrategias comunicativas no verbales, empleadas por Gaitán, influyeron de manera positiva en su discurso político. Así, el dominio consciente e inconsciente de elementos no verbales funciona estratégicamente para complementar su discurso.

El surgimiento del Orden Internacional Moderno según Tierra y Mar de Carl Schmitt

El propósito de esta disertación es rescatar las interpretaciones de Tierra y Mar en lo que se refiere al surgimiento del Orden Internacional Moderno, con el objetivo de explicar la percepción de los acontecimientos por parte de Carl Schmitt y su aporte filosófico-jurídico a la comprensión de la historia y teoría de las Relaciones Internacionales. La particularidad de esta obra de Schmitt es su estilo profundo: la variedad y amplitud de temas que abarca, que contrasta con la brevedad del texto. El presente trabajo ha encontrado vacíos en el estudio de Tierra y Mar, así como interpretaciones distintas a las propuestas por el autor, en lo concerniente al surgimiento del Orden Internacional Moderno. La originalidad de la obra de Schmitt consiste en proponer, en realidad, dos órdenes internacionales distintos que surgen en el mundo moderno.

El papel de actores transnacionales a propósito de la situación derechos humanos en Venezuela

A partir de febrero de 2014, la historia de la República Bolivariana se fracturó. El descontento popular, la protesta social y las marchas pacíficas son reprimidas como consecuencia de un abuso de poder por parte del gobierno del presidente Nicolás Maduro. Las redes de información y comunicación, en los términos de Margaret Keck y Kathryn Sikkink, han jugado un papel fundamental para poner en evidencia las violaciones sistemáticas a los DD.HH., siendo estos el factor principal que vulnera la estabilidad política de la democracia venezolana. En este sentido, el desconocimiento de las garantías fundamentales, el deterioro de la democracia constitucional y el papel multiplicador de los actores transnacionales, han logrado visibilizar ante la comunidad internacional un déficit en materia de DD.HH. y con ello la debilidad de Venezuela como gobierno democrático.
