Cosmopolitan citizenship and pathologies of pluralism

There are two interconnected questions obscured in the contemporary discourse of legal pluralism. The first concerns the legitimacy of the various forms of pluralism. The second concerns their pathology. If we accept that law does not issue from a unitary source, the problem becomes to characterize the kinds of pluralism in which we find ourselves and to discern their principles of legitimacy. It cannot be taken for granted that they are all legitimate, that is to say, that they can both articulate and fulfill founding principles of justification. That leads to the second question. To celebrate all legal pluralism simply by drawing attention to it as anobservable, documented fact, without considering whether that pluralism conduces to the just and the good, is like speaking of the pluralism of the body’s mechanisms without asking whether any given complex of cells is malignant or benign.

The potential utility of age, triage score, and disposition data contained in emergency department electronic records for influenza-like illness surveillance in Montreal

La surveillance de l’influenza s’appuie sur un large spectre de données, dont les données de surveillance syndromique provenant des salles d’urgences. De plus en plus de variables sont enregistrées dans les dossiers électroniques des urgences et mises à la disposition des équipes de surveillance. L’objectif principal de ce mémoire est d’évaluer l’utilité potentielle de l’âge, de la catégorie de triage et de l’orientation au départ de l’urgence pour améliorer la surveillance de la morbidité liée aux cas sévères d’influenza. Les données d’un sous-ensemble des hôpitaux de Montréal ont été utilisées, d’avril 2006 à janvier 2011. Les hospitalisations avec diagnostic de pneumonie ou influenza ont été utilisées comme mesure de la morbidité liée aux cas sévères d’influenza, et ont été modélisées par régression binomiale négative, en tenant compte des tendances séculaires et saisonnières. En comparaison avec les visites avec syndrome d’allure grippale (SAG) totales, les visites avec SAG stratifiées par âge, par catégorie de triage et par orientation de départ ont amélioré le modèle prédictif des hospitalisations avec pneumonie ou influenza. Avant d’intégrer ces variables dans le système de surveillance de Montréal, des étapes additionnelles sont suggérées, incluant l’optimisation de la définition du syndrome d’allure grippale à utiliser, la confirmation de la valeur de ces prédicteurs avec de nouvelles données et l’évaluation de leur utilité pratique.

Design and disposition of infrared optical multilayer coatings for the Improved Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (ISAMS)

The Improved Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (ISAMS) is designed to measure the Earths middle atmosphere in the range of 4.6 to 16.6 micorns. This paper considers all the coated optical elements in two radiometric test channels. (Analysis of the spectral response will be presented as a seperate paper at this symposium, see Sheppard et al). Comparisons between the compued spectral performance and measurements from actual coatings will be discussed: These will include substrate absorption simulations. The results of environmental testing (durability and stability) are included, together with details of coating deposition and monitoring conditions.

Cosmopolitan Catterick? Isotopic evidence for population mobility on Rome’s Northern frontier

In order to investigate how the population diversity at major Romano-British urban centres compared to small towns and military outposts, we conducted multi-isotope (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and strontium) analyses of bones (42 individuals) and teeth (26 individuals) of human skeletons from Cataractonium/ Roman Catterick in North Yorkshire (U.K.). The results suggest a markedly less diverse population at Catterick than at the larger towns. Significant differences are observed between burials from the town and fort area and the suburb of Bainesse to the south, and it is suggested that these reflect a shift to more localised recruitment for the Roman army in the Late Roman period. Isotope data for the ‘Bainesse Eunuch’, an unusual 4th century burial that has been interpreted as the remains of a ‘transvestite’ priest of Cybele, are not ultimately conclusive but consistent with origins in Southern Britain or areas with a similar climate abroad. This paper also presents strontium isotope data for modern vegetation samples from 17 sites in the Catterick/northern Vale of York area which contribute to a continuing effort to map the biosphere 87Sr/86Sr variation in Britain.

Parallel editing, multi-positionality and maximalism: cosmopolitan effects as explored in some art works by Melanie Jackson and Vivienne Dick

Garfield produces a critique of neo-minimalist art practice by demonstrating how the artist Melanie Jackson’s Some things you are not allowed to send around the world (2003 and 2006) and the experimental film-maker Vivienne Dick’s Liberty’s booty (1980) – neither of which can be said to be about feeling ‘at home’ in the world, be it as a resident or as a nomad – examine global humanity through multi-positionality, excess and contingency, and thereby begin to articulate a new cosmopolitan relationship with the local – or, rather, with many different localities – in one and the same maximalist sweep of the work. ‘Maximalism’ in Garfield’s coinage signifies an excessive overloading (through editing, collage, and the sheer density of the range of the material) that enables the viewer to insert themselves into the narrative of the work. In the art of both Jackson and Dick Garfield detects a refusal to know or to judge the world; instead, there is an attempt to incorporate the complexities of its full range into the singular vision of the work, challenging the viewer to identify what is at stake.

Disposition of two names in Almeidea (Rutaceae)

(Disposition of two names in Almeidea (Rutaceae)). Examination of type specimens at the P herbarium showed that Almeidea longifolia A. St.-Hil. (Rutaceae) is an illegitimate substitute name for A. affinis A. St.-Hil. The latter name is proposed here as a heterotypic synonym of A. rubra A. St.-Hil.
