Being the commonest ocular disorder, dense cataracts disable fundoscopic examination and the diagnosis of retinal disorders, which dogs may be predisposed. The aim of this study was to compare the electroretinographic responses recorded according to the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision human protocol to evaluate retinal function of diabetic and non diabetic dogs, both presenting mature or hypermature cataracts. Full-field electroretinogram was recorded from 66 dogs, with ages varying from 6 to 15 years old allocated into two groups: (1) CG, non diabetic cataractous dogs, and (2) DG, diabetic cataractous dogs. Mean peak-to-peak amplitude (microvolts) and b-wave implicit time (milliseconds) were determined for each of the five standard full-field ERG responses (rod response, maximal response, oscillatory potentials, single-flash cone response and 30 Hz flicker). Comparing CG to DG, ERGs recorded from diabetic dogs presented lower amplitude and prolonged b-wave implicit time in all ERG responses. Prolonged b-wave implicit time was statistically significant (p< 0.05) at 30 Hz flicker (24.0 ms versus 22.4 ms). These data suggests full-field ERG is capable to record sensible alterations, such as flicker's implicit time, being useful to investigate retinal dysfunction in diabetic dogs.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a prevalência de ingestão inadequada de nutrientes em um grupo de adolescentes de São Bernardo do Campo-SP. Dados de consumo de energia e nutrientes foram obtidos por meio de recordatórios de 24 horas aplicados em 89 adolescentes. A prevalência de inadequação foi calculada utilizando o método EAR como ponto de corte, após ajuste pela variabilidade intrapessoal, utilizando o procedimento desenvolvido pela Iowa State University. As Referências de Ingestão Dietética (IDR) foram os valores de referência para ingestão. Para os nutrientes que não possuem EAR estabelecida, a distribuição do consumo foi comparada com a AI. As maiores prevalências de inadequação em ambos sexos foram observadas para o magnésio (99,3 por cento para o sexo masculino e 81,8 por cento para o feminino), zinco (44,0 por cento para o sexo masculino e 23,5 por cento para o feminino), vitamina C (57,2 por cento para o sexo masculino e 59,9 por cento para o feminino) e folato (34,8 por cento para o sexo feminino). A proporção de indivíduos com ingestão superior à AI foi insignificante (menor que 2,0 por cento) em ambos os sexos

Aims. We determine the iron distribution function (IDF) for bulge field stars, in three different fields along the Galactic minor axis and at latitudes b = -4 degrees, b = -6 degrees, and b = -12 degrees. A fourth field including NGC 6553 is also included in the discussion. Methods. About 800 bulge field K giants were observed with the GIRAFFE spectrograph of FLAMES@VLT at spectral resolution R similar to 20 000. Several of them were observed again with UVES at R similar to 45 000 to insure the accuracy of the measurements. The LTE abundance analysis yielded stellar parameters and iron abundances that allowed us to construct an IDF for the bulge that, for the first time, is based on high-resolution spectroscopy for each individual star. Results. The IDF derived here is centered on solar metallicity, and extends from [Fe/H] similar to -1.5 to [Fe/H] similar to + 0.5. The distribution is asymmetric, with a sharper cutoff on the high-metallicity side, and it is narrower than previously measured. A variation in the mean metallicity along the bulge minor axis is clearly between b = -4 degrees and b = -6 degrees ([Fe/H] decreasing similar to by 0.6 dex per kpc). The field at b = -12 degrees. is consistent with the presence of a gradient, but its quantification is complicated by the higher disk/bulge fraction in this field. Conclusions. Our findings support a scenario in which both infall and outflow were important during the bulge formation, and then suggest the presence of a radial gradient, which poses some challenges to the scenario in which the bulge would result solely from the vertical heating of the bar.

A systematic revision of the granulatus group of the bothriurid scorpion genus Urophonius Pocock, 1893 is presented. Urophonius pizarroi, n. sp., a new species from central Chile, is described. Urophonius granulatus Pocock, 1898, Urophonius somuncura Acosta, 2003, and Urophonius tregualemuensis Cekalovic, 1981, are redescribed using modern standards. The adult males of U. somuncura and U. tregualemuensis are described for the first time. A distribution map and key to the species of the granulatus group are provided, along with a discussion of their phenology.

This study examines the applicability of a micromechanics approach based upon the computational cell methodology incorporating the Gurson-Tvergaard (GT) model and the CTOA criterion to describe ductile crack extension of longitudinal crack-like defects in high pressure pipeline steels. A central focus is to gain additional insight into the effectiveness and limitations of both approaches to describe crack growth response and to predict the burst pressure for the tested cracked pipes. A verification study conducted on burst testing of large-diameter, precracked pipe specimens with varying crack depth to thickness ratio (a/t) shows the potential predictive capability of the cell approach even though both the CT model and the CTOA criterion appear to depend on defect geometry. Overall, the results presented here lend additional support for further developments in the cell methodology as a valid engineering tool for integrity assessments of pipelines with axial defects. An emended diagnosis and generic reallocation are proposed for the trilete miospore Indotriradites dolianitii (Daemon, 1974) Loboziak et al., comb. nov. A new species, I. daemonii Loboziak et al., sp. nov., from Viséan strata of Western Gondwana, is erected. These two species, together with I. zosteriformis (Playford et Satterthwait) Playford, 1991 from the Viséan of Australia, belong to a cohesive morphological miospore category, here termed the Indotriradites dolianitii Morphon, which is evidently restricted to the Lower Carboniferous of Gondwana.

Spider toxins that target potassium channels constitute a new class of pharmacological tools that can be used to probe the structure and function of these channels at the molecular level. The limited studies performed to date indicate that these peptide toxins may facilitate the analysis of K+ channels that have proved insensitive to peptide inhibitors isolated from other animal sources. Thus far, two classes of K+ channel-selective spider toxins have been isolated, sequenced, and pharmacologically characterised - the hanatoxins (HaTx) from Grammastola spatulata and heteropodatoxins (HpTx) from Heteropoda venatoria. The hanatoxins block Kv2.1 and Kv4.2 voltage-gated K+ channels. In Kv2.1 K+ channels this occurs as a consequence of a depolarising shift in the voltage dependence of activation and not by occlusion of the channel pore. These toxins show minimal sequence homology with other peptide inhibitors of K+ channels, but they do share some homology with other ion channel toxins from spiders, particularly with regard to the spacing between cysteine residues. We have recently isolated three K+ channel antagonists from the venom of the Australian funnel-web spider Hadronyche versuta; at least two of these toxins are likely to constitute a new class of spider toxins active on K+ channels as they are approximately twice as large as HaTx and HpTx.

The six peculiar multicusped teeth described here were collected from sediments of the Upper Cretaceous of Sao Jose do Rio Preto Formation, near Ibira (northeastern Sao Paulo, Brazil). Their bulbous crowns are slightly labio-lingual compressed, and bear a main plus two accessory cusps, which conceal a well developed cingulum. Wear facets are seen on the main and distal accessory cusps. Comparison to the known Crocodyliformes with multicusped teeth show that the new material is not referable to ""protosuchians"" or eusuchians, nor related to two unnamed forms from Morocco and ""notosuchians"" such as Uruguaysuchus, Chiamaerasuchus, and Simosuchus. On the other hand, possible affinities with Candidodon and Malawisuchus were maintained based on shared traits. This includes teeth with the main cusp and some accessory cusps arranged in more than one axis, a previously defined unambiguous apomorphy of the putative clade composed of Candidodon plus Malawisuchus. The term Candidodontidae can be applied to this group, and defined as all taxa closer to Candidodon itapecuruensis than to Notosuchus terrestris, Uruguaysuchus aznarezi, Comahuesuchus brachybuccalis, Sphagesaurus huenei, Baurusuchus pachecoi, and Crocodylus niloticus. This study uses a molecular-dating approach to test hypotheses about the biogeography of Nothofagus. The molecular modelling suggests that the present-day subgenera and species date from a radiation that most likely commenced between 55 and 40 Myr ago. This rules out the possibility of a reconciled all-vicariance hypothesis for the biogeography of extant Nothofagus. However, the molecular dates for divergences between Australasian and South American taxa are consistent with the rifting of Australia and South America from Antarctica. The molecular dates further suggest a dispersal of subgenera Lophozonia and Fuscospora between Australia and New Zealand after the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and west wind drift. It appears likely that the New Caledonian lineage of subgenus Brassospora diverged from the New Guinean lineage elsewhere, prior to colonizing New Caledonia. The molecular approach strongly supports fossil-based estimates that Nothofagus diverged from the rest of Fagales more than 84 Myr ago. However, the mid-Cenozoic estimate for the diversification of the four extant subgenera conflicts with the palynological interpretation because pollen fossils, attributed to all four extant subgenera, were widespread across the Weddellian province of Gondwana about 71 Myr ago. The discrepancy between the pollen and molecular dates exists even when confidence intervals from several sources of error are taken into account. In contrast, the molecular age estimates are consistent with macrofossil dates. The incongruence between pollen fossils and molecular dates could be resolved if the early pollen types represent extinct lineages, with similar types later evolving independently in the extant lineages.

The treatment of membranous lupus nephritis (MLN) is still controversial in the literature. We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients in two medical centers of Sao Paulo-Brazil in order to evaluate the clinical response in patients submitted to either a regimen with prednisone alone or to a double immunosuppressive regimen (prednisone plus cyclophosphamide or prednisone plus azathioprine). Methods: MLN female patients were enrolled in this retrospective study conducted from February 1999 to June 2007. Data were collected from the patients` medical charts. Race distribution was similar in both groups: Caucasian (72.3%) and Afro-Latin-American (27.7%). The prednisone regimen consisted of 1 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks and tapering until 0.1 mg/kg/day (n = 29). The double immunosuppressive treatment consisted of the same doses of prednisone plus monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide or azathioprine for 6 months (n = 24). Criteria for remission (complete and partial) and renal function loss as well as flare criteria followed those used in the literature. Results: There was no difference between the prednisone group and the double immunosuppressive group regarding age (33.2 +/- 9.4 vs. 29.1 +/- 9.1 y), estimated GFR (76.5 +/- 26.6 vs. 74.1 +/- 39.6 ml/min/1.73 m(2)), serum albumin (2.8 +/- 0.7 vs. 2.6 +/- 0.3 g/dl), positive ANA (87.5 vs. 90.0%), positive anti-dsDNA (47.6 vs. 44.0%), renal SLEDAI indices (6.6 +/- 2.6 vs. 7.0 +/- 3.1), follow-up time (71 +/- 46 vs. 62 +/- 45 months), as well as proteinuria (3.1 +/- 1.9 vs. 4.8 +/- 2.4 g/day) and number of non-nephrotic patients (6 in the prednisone group vs. 3 in the double immunosuppressive group). The prednisone group presented higher C3 values (85.2 +/- 31.5 vs. 62.3 +/- 41.6 U/ml, p = 0.04). Clinical and laboratory characteristics at 6 months and at last follow-up did not reveal any differences between treatment regimens. Renal survival after an 8-year follow-up did not differ in both groups (prednisone group 86.2% vs. double immunosuppressive group 75%), and patients in both groups showed a high rate of renal flares (prednisone group 51.7% vs. double immunosuppressive group 62.5%). Univariate analysis showed that only patient age predicted flares (r = -0.048, p = 0.04). Borderline significance was obtained for proteinuria analysis (p = 0.07). Adverse effects did not differ between the groups. Conclusions: A regimen of corticosteroids in MLN induced a high remission rate after 6 months. Both treatment regimens showed a high flare rate and age was the only predictive parameter (r = -0.048, p = 0.04). Renal survival after 8 years did not differ between the groups.

Background. Dental erosion is a multifactorial disease and is associated with dietary habits in infancy and adolescence. Aim. To investigate possible associations among dental erosion and diet, medical history and lifestyle habits in Brazilian schoolchildren. Design. The sample consisted of a random single centre cluster of 414 adolescents (12- and 16-years old) of both genders from private and public schools in Bauru (Brazil). The O`Brien [Children`s Dental Health in the United Kingdom, 1993 (1994) HMSO, London] index was used for dental erosion assessment. Data on medical history, rate and frequency of food and drinks consumption, and lifestyle habits were collected by a self-reported questionnaire. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the univariate relationships between variables. Analysis of questionnaire items was performed by multiple logistic regression analysis. The statistical significance level was set at 5%. Results. The erosion present group comprised 83 subjects and the erosion absent group 331. There were no statistically significant correlations among dental erosion and the consumption of food and drinks, medical history, or lifestyle habits. Conclusion. The results indicate that there was no correlation between dental erosion and the risk factors analysed among adolescents in Bauru/Brazil and further investigations are necessary to clarify the multifactorial etiology of this condition.

Purpose: This study`s purpose was to assess the prevalence of dental erosion in adolescents and to investigate the association between erosion and sociodemographic characteristics. Methods: This study consisted of a single center cluster random sample of 414 adolescents (12 and 16 years old) of both genders from private and public schools in Bauru, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Two previously calibrated examiners (kappa=0.85) used the O`Brien (7994) index for assessment of dental erosion on the buccal and palatal surfaces of the permanent maxillary incisors and on the occlusal surfaces of the permanent first molars. Data on gender, type of school, and mean family income were collected by a questionnaire completed by the adolescents. Descriptive statistics were applied to the data, and the associations between erosion and sociodemographic variables were investigated by chi-square test (P<0.05). Results: The prevalence of dental erosion was 20% (N=83), with only enamel being involved (score 1). The labial surface was the most affected (16%). There were no significant differences between the presence of erosion and gender, type of school, and mean family income. Conclusions: The results indicate that dental erosion restricted to enamel was observed among adolescents in Bauru/Brazil, and there was no correlation between this condition and sociodemographic factors.
