The deficiency of data in the literature took us to evaluate the Bionator of Balters appliance in the alterations of the dimensions and the relationship of the dental archs in children with malocclusion Class II, division 1 of Angle. The experimental group was constituted by 36 pairs cast Caucasians patients, aged between 7 years and 10 months - 11 years and 8 months, being 10 females and 8 males. The Levene´s test showed statistical evidences of likeness among the groups. Statistical analysis was preceded and showed significant alterations (p < 0,005) in the variable indicatives of maxillary first molars' distance, overjet, upper arch total length, upper arch anterior length, right molar relationship, left molar relationship, right canine relationship and left canine relationship. On the other hand, there wasn't significant alteration related to the lower arch and maxillary intercanines distance. The Balters' Bionator appliance had a favorable effect in the improvement of the correction of the malocclusion in Class II (foremost in molars and canines relationship) and transversal increase of the upper arch, mainly in the posterior area of arch.

This study evaluated the maxillary transversal changes caused by the rapid maxillary expansion (RME) accomplished by Hyrax appliance. Sixteen children from both genders were selected and treated, with ages between 7.7 to 10.8 years, who presented unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite. Postero-anterior radiographs were taken at the beginning of the treatment, end and post-retention period. The treatment promoted an average opening of 8.8 mm of IMD (intermolar distance), 2.33 mm of IAD (interapex distance) and none of IID (interincisal distance). At the end of retention period, relapse was observed, with a decrease of 4.3 mm of IMD, 1.23 mm of IAD, a non-significant enlargement of IID (0,38 mm). These results confirm the significant influence of Hyrax appliance on transverse dimensions, represented by enlargement of IMD and IAD and its effectiveness to solve posterior crossbites.

Despite the strong valorization of the esthetics and its relationship with restorative materials, the biological principles of any clinical procedure are extremely important to maintain the vitality of the dentin-pulp complex. Dentin and pulp tissue are susceptible to different kinds of irritants such as toxins from microorganisms, traumatic procedures of cavity preparation, as well as toxic components released by restorative materials applied in non recommended clinical situations. Initially, the pulp responds to irritation by starting an inflammatory reaction which involves outward movement of dentinal fluid and intratubular deposition of immunoglobulins, upregulation of odontoblast activities, presence of immune cells and their cytokines as well as local expression of neuropeptides and chemokines. After these initial events, the inflammation process can be resolved associated or not to sclerotic dentin formation and reactionary dentin deposition. If high intensity offensive stimuli are applied to the dentin-pulp complex, death of odontoblasts takes place and consequently pulp ageing or even partial necrosis of this tissue may occurs. Thereby, clinicians need to be aware about the physiological and pathological features of the dentin-pulp complex as well as the possible biological consequences of different clinical procedures. In this way, the dentists should be able to carry out minimally aggressive operative techniques and to select the more appropriate restorative materials for each specific clinical situation in order to obtain excellent clinical results associated to the maintenance of pulp vitality.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the trans-enamel and transdentinal cytotoxic effects of two in-office tooth bleaching techniques that employ bleaching gels containing 20% and 38% of H2 O2 on cultured odontoblast-like cell line (MDPC-23). Sixty enamel/dentin discs were obtained from bovine central incisors and placed individually in artificial pulp chambers. Six groups were formed according to the following enamel treatments: G1- 20% H2 O2 (1 application); G2- 20% H2 O2 (2 applications); G3- 38% H2 O2 (1 application); G4- 38% H2 O2 (2 applications); G5- 38% H2 O2 (3 applications); and G6- control (no treatment). In G1 and G2, the bleaching gel was left in contact with the enamel surface for 45 min in each application. However, in G3, G4, and G5 the bleaching gel was applied for only 10 min per application. After the last application, the extracts were collected and applied on previously cultured cells (30.000 cells/cm2 ) for 24 h. Cell metabolism was evaluated by the MTT assay and cell morphology was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Cell metabolism decreased by 96.29%; 96.11%; 96.42%; 95.62%; and 97.18% in G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5, respectively. All treated groups differed significantly from non-treated control group (G6) (p < 0.05). However, the difference in cell metabolism among treated groups was not significant statistically. In addition, significant morphological cell alterations were observed in all treated groups. Under the tested experimental conditions, the extracts collected after both tooth bleaching techniques evaluated in this study caused severe toxic effects on cultured odontoblast-like cell MDPC-23.

Tooth bleaching is a treatment modality that raises great interest, due to the important role played by aesthetics in current life style. To perform such procedure, nowadays, there are several bleaching substances at several concentrations, as well as, diverse clinical techniques. When suggesting this procedure, the dentist should take into consideration several factors related to the patient to determine which will be the most appropriate technique/material combination for solving the clinical problem. The procedure indication should not only be based on the expectations exhibited by the patient, but also on respecting the biological principles to maintain the integrity of both the endodontic and periodontal tissues.

Patients infected with HIV can present several complications related to oral health. Today, the reduction of morbidity and mortality is evidenttreatment with antiviral enhances the quality of life of patients. The increase in comfort, stability, function and improving quality of life have led these patients to seek treatment with osseointegrated implants. This study aimed to discuss, based on the literature, the rehabilitation treatment with osseointegrated implants in patients HIV positive. For this we carried out a literature review including the subject in the databases: PubMed, Cochrane, ISI Dentistry and Oral Science in the last 20 years. The issue was addressed for the first time in 1998, describing a clinical case, the patient had successful rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants. However, the literature states that the indications must be carefully analyzed (2007), since there are few prospective controlled studies. There is doubt as to the use of dental implant therapy in patients with HIV-positive, and the complications are related to the patient’s systemic condition. It is essential to understand the clinical manifestations and complications of the disease before the implant therapy. It is observed that the dental implant therapy in patients with HIV positive is a predictable treatment option, it´s need an adequate control of oral and systemic conditions, and studies with larger sample, longer follow-up and randomized studies are important for evaluating the success therapy.

The use of implants of greater length may be more favorable for the predictability of dental implants. This statement is relevant, since the cause of failures in dental implants are more related to biomechanical complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of increase of the length around the entire body of the implant. Six models were created with the presence of only one hexagonal implant (Master Screw connection, Implant Systems, São Paulo, Brazil) of 3.75 mm x 7.0 mm (Model A), 3.75 mm x 8.5 mm (Model B ), 3.75 mm x 10.0 mm (Model C) 3.75 mm x 11.5 mm (Model D) 3.75 mm x 13.0 mm (Model E) 3.75 mm x 15.0 mm (Model F) using the method of photoelasticity. The results were visualized through a qualitative analysis of stresses (number and intensity photoelastic fringes). The model A showed a pattern of less favorable stress distribution, the oblique loading was the most detrimental to the related structures. Conclusion: The increased length allowed for a better distribution of stresses. The oblique loading was more detrimental when compared to axial loading.
