Laser-induced nondestructive photoacoustic (PA) technique has been employed to determine the thermal diffusivity of nanometal (Ag) dispersed ceramic alumina matrix sintered at different temperatures. The thermal diffusivity values are evaluated by knowing the transition frequency from the amplitude spectrum of PA signal using the one-dimensional heat flow model of Rosencwaig and Gersho. Analysis of the data shows that heat transport and hence the thermal diffusivity value is greatly affected by the influence of incorporation of foreign atom. It is also seen that sintering temperature affects the thermal diffusivity value in a substantial manner. The results are interpreted in terms of variation in porosity and carrier-assisted heat transport mechanism in nanometal dispersed ceramics.

Glass microspheres containing radionuclides are used to treat liver cancer. A promising alternative therapy is being developed based on the magnetic hyperthermia which is related to the heat supplied by a magnetic material under an alternating current magnetic field. The advantage of this option is that most of killed cells are cancer cells which are more susceptible to the temperature raise. In the present work aluminum iron silicate glasses containing minor glass modifiers and nucleating agents were synthesized as irregular shape particles which were further transformed in microspheres by using a petrol liquefied gas-oxygen torch. The optimized processing parameters which lead to microspheres that give a response to the magnetic field were determined. The dissolution rate in water at 90 degrees C was determined to be 3 x 10(-8) g cm(-2) min(-1). The microsphere size distribution was determined by laser scattering. The crystalline phase responsible for the ferromagnetic response was identified as magnetite. Since this phase has a high saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature, it is potentially useful for biomedical applications. The hysteresis magnetic loop was measured for materials produced in different conditions, and some of them showed to be appropriated for thermotherapy. The ratio Fe(3+)/Fe(total) was determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports on the effect of glass ceramic silica matrix on [CrO4](4-) and Cr2O3 NIR and visible luminescence. Chromium-containing silica was obtained by precipitation from water-glass and chromium nitrate acid solution with thermal treatment at 1000 degrees C. From XRD results silica and silica-chromium samples are crystalline. The chromium emission spectrum presents two main broad bands: one in the NIR region (1.1-1.7 mu m) and other in the visible region (0.6-0.7 mu m) assigned to Cr4+ and to Cr3+, respectively. This thermal treated glass ceramic silica-chromium sample stabilizes the [CrO4](4-) where Cr4+ substitutes for Si4+ and also hexacoordinated Cr3+ group probably as segregated phase in the system. It can be pointed out that luminescence spectroscopy is a powerful toot for detecting the two chromium optical centers in the glass ceramic silica. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of different protocols for resin cement removal during cementation on biofilm formation. Methods: Twenty-eight ceramic blocks, which were injected under pressure, were placed over enamel blocks obtained from freshly extracted bovine incisors. The ceramic blocks were cemented to the enamel blocks using a dual-cured resin cement and the excess resin was removed according to the experimental group: TS: Teflon spatula; BR: brush; BR+: brush and polishing; SB+: scalpel blade and polishing. After autoclaving, the samples were colonised by incubation in a sucrose broth suspension standardised with Streptococcus mutans in microaerophilic stove. Specimens were quantitatively analysed for bacterial adherence at the adhesive interface using confocal laser scanning microscopy and counting the colony forming units, and qualitatively analysed using SEM. The roughness (Ra/Rz/RSm) was also analysed. Data were analysed by 1-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%).Results: The roughness values ranged from 0.96 to 1.69 mu m for Ra (p > 0.05), from 11.59 to 22.80 mu m for Rz (p = 0.02 < 0.05) and from 293.2 to 534.3 mu m for RSm (p = 0.00). Bacterial adhesion varied between 1,974,000 and 2,814,000 CFU/ml (p = 0.00). Biofilm mean thickness ranged from 0.477 and 0.556 mu m (p > 0.05), whilst the biovolume values were between 0.388 and 0.547 mu m(3)/mu m(2) (p = 0.04). Lower values for roughness, bacterial adhesion, biofilm thickness and biovolume were found with BR, whilst TS presented the highest values for most of the parameters. SEM images confirmed the quantitative values. Conclusions: The restoration margin morphology and interface roughness affects bacterial accumulation. The brush technique promoted less bacterial colonisation at the adhesive interface than did the other removal methods.Clinical significance: The brush technique seems to be a good option for removing the excess resin cement after adhesive cementation in clinical practice, as indicated by its better results with lower bacterial colonisation. Objectives. This study characterized the feldspathic ceramic surfaces after various silanization protocols.Methods. Ceramic bars (2 mm x 4 mm x 10 mm) (N = 18) of feldpathic ceramic (VM7, VITA Zahnfabrik) were manufactured and finished. Before silane application, the specimens were ultrasonically cleaned in distilled water for 10 min. The ceramic specimens were randomly divided into nine groups (N = 2 per group) and were treated with different silane protocols. MPS silane (ESPE-Sil, 3M ESPE) was applied to all specimens and left to react at 20 degrees C for 2 min (G20). After drying, the specimens were subjected to heat treatment in an oven at 38 degrees C (G38), 79 degrees C (G79) or 100 degrees C (G100) for 1 min. Half of the specimens of each group were rinsed with water at 80 degrees C for 15 s (G20B, G38B, G79B, G100B). The control group (GC) received no silane. Attenuated total reflection infrared Fourier transform analysis (ATR FT-IR) was performed using a spectrometer. Thickness of silane layer was measured using a spectroscopic ellip-someter working in the lambda = 632.8 nm (He-Ne laser) at 70 degrees incidence angle. Surface roughness was evaluated using an optical profilometer. Specimens were further analyzed under the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe the topographic patterns.Results. ATR FT-IR analysis showed changes in Si-O peaks with enlarged bands around 940 cm(-1). Ellipsometry measurements showed that all post-heat treatment actions reduced the silane film thickness (30.8-33.5 nm) compared to G20 (40 nm). The groups submitted to rinsing in hot water (B groups) showed thinner silane films (9.8-14.4 nm) than those of their corresponding groups (without washing) (30.8-40 nm). Profilometer analysis showed that heat treatments (Ra approximate to 0.10-0.19 mu m; Rq approximate to 0.15-0.26 mu m) provided a smoother surface than the control group (Ra approximate to 0.48 mu m; Rq approximate to 0.65 mu m). Similar patterns were also observed in SEM images.Significance. Heat treatment after MPS silane application improved the silane layer network. Rinsing with boiling water eliminated the outmost unreacted regions of the silane yielding to thinner film thicknesses. (C) 2011 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The interface formed between the metal and the porcelain of a LASER welded Ni-Cr-Mo alloy was studied. The characterization was carried out through optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray dispersive spectroscopy-EDS and mechanical testing by three-point flexion test-TPE in the region LASER welded with and without the porcelain. The porcelain adhesion with the alloy alone is possible after the oxidation of the metallic surface and subsequent application of an adhesive called opaco. The applied porcelain, on the base metal and fusion zone presented some distinct behaviors. After the TPF test the base metal presented fractures while that in the fusion zone was completely gone. One noticed that the region submitted to the LASER welding showed less porcelain adhesion than the region of the base metal due to the microestructural refinement of the fusion zone. These results can be evidenced by the EDS of the studied regions. The TPF had demonstrated that the Ni-Cr-Mo alloy submitted to the LASER welding, undergone significant alterations in its mechanical properties after the application of the porcelain.

Intense red upconversion emission around 650 nm in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 transparent glass ceramic containing beta-PbF2:Ho3+ nanocrystals, is presented. The holmium-doped vitroceramic samples were excited by a 980 nm diode laser source. The 650 nm upconversion signal was assigned to the F-5(5) --> I-5(8) transition of holmium ions. Very low intensity signals around 490 and 540 nm corresponding to the F-5(2,3) --> I-5(8) and S-4(2), F-5(4) --> I-5(8) transitions, respectively, were also detected. The upconversion excitation mechanism was achieved through a combination of stepwise phonon-assisted multiphoton absorption, cross-relaxation processes involving pairs of holmium ions, and excited-state absorption. Using a diode laser pump source around 850 nm green upconversion emission around 540 nm was the observed predominant signal. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In order to investigate optically excited electronic transport in Er-doped SnO2, thin films are excited with the fourth harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser (266nm) at low temperature, yielding conductivity decay when the illumination is removed. Inspection of these electrical characteristics aims knowledge for electroluminescent devices operation. Based on a proposed model where trapping defects present thermally activated cross section, the capture barrier is evaluated as 140, 108, 100 and 148 meV for doped SnO2, thin films with 0.0, 0.05, 0. 10 and 4.0 at% of Er, respectively. The undoped film has vacancy levels as dominating, whereas for doped films. there are two distinct trapping centers: Er3+ substitutional at Sn lattice sites and Er3+ located at grain boundary. Energy transfer excited multiwavelength visible upconversion emission and white light generation is described in a single sample of PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic triply doped With Ho/Tm/Yb under single infrared laser excitation. Blue (475 nm), green (540 mn), and red (650 nm), upconversion luminescence signals are generated, and the emissions are assigned, respectively, to thulium ((1)G(4)-(3)H(6)), and holmium ((5)S(2);(5)F(4)) -> (5)I(8), (5)F(5) -> (5)I(8)) ions transitions, both excited via successive energy transfers from ytterbium ions. It is experimentally shown that with a proper combination of the rare earth ions contents, white light may be produced, with the simultaneous generation of fluorescence with controllable intensities at the wavelengths of the three primary colours in a single sample and using a single near-infrared excitation source.

The interface formed between the metal and the porcelain of laser-welded Ni-Cr-Mo alloy was studied on a metallurgical basis. The characterization was carried out by using optical microscope, electron scan microscopy and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy techniques and mechanical three-point flexion tests, in the laser-welded region, with and without porcelain. The union of the porcelain with the alloy is possible only after the oxidation of the metallic surface and the subsequent application of a bonding agent known as opaque. The porcelain applied to the base metal and weld bead showed different behaviours - after the flexion test, the base metal showed cracks, while that in the weld bead broke away completely. It was noted that the region subjected to laser welding had lower adherence to the porcelain than the base metal region, due to microstructural refinement of the weld bead. These results can be shown by the X-ray dispersive spectroscopy carried out on the regions studied. The flexion tests demonstrated that the Ni-Cr-Mo alloy subject to laser welding had significant alterations in its mechanical properties after application of the porcelain.

The infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion was investigated in Er 3+-doped Ga10Ge25S65 glass and in the transparent glass-ceramic obtained by heat-treatment of the glass above its glass-transition temperature. Continuous-wave and pulsed lasers operating at 980 nm and 1480 nm were used as excitation sources. The green (2H 11/2 → 4I15/2; 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and red (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) photoluminescence (PL) signals due to the Er3+ ions were characterized. The PL decay times were influenced by energy transfer among Er3+ ions, by cross-relaxation processes and by energy transfer from the Er3+ ions to the host material. The PL from the Er3+ ions hosted in the crystalline phase was distinguished only when the glass-ceramic was excited by the 1480 nm pulsed laser. The excitation pathways responsible for the green and red PL bands are discussed to explain the differences between the spectra observed under continuous-wave and pulsed excitation. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

This work reports on the infrared-to-visible CW frequency upconversion from planar waveguides based on Er3+-Yb3+-doped 100-xSiO(2)-xTa(2)O(5) obtained by a sol-gel process and deposited onto a SiO2-Si substrate by dip-coating. Surface morphology and optical parameters of the planar waveguides were analyzed by atomic force microscopy and the m-line technique. The influence of the composition on the electronic properties of the glass-ceramic films was followed by the band gap ranging from 4.35 to 4.51 eV upon modification of the Ta2O5 content. Intense green and red emissions were detected from the upconversion process for all the samples after excitation at 980 nm. The relative intensities of the emission bands around 550 nm and 665 nm, assigned to the H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions, depended on the tantalum oxide content and the power of the laser source at 980 nm. The upconversion dynamics were investigated as a function of the Ta2O5 content and the number of photons involved in each emission process. Based on the upconversion emission spectra and 1931CIE chromaticity diagram, it is shown that color can be tailored by composition and pump power. The glass ceramic films are attractive materials for application in upconversion lasers and near infrared-to-visible upconverters in solar cells.
