The efficiency of acoustooptic (AO) interaction in YZ-cut proton exchanged (PE) LiNbO3 waveguides is theoretically analysed by determining the overlap between the optical and acoustic field distributions. The present analysis takes into account the perturbed SAW field distribution due to the presence of the PE layer on the LiNbO3 substrate determined by the rigorous layered medium approach. The overlap is found to be significant upto very high acoustic frequencies of the order of 5 GHz, whereas in the earlier analysis by vonHelmolt and Schaffer [6] for diffused waveguides, it was shown that the overlap integral rolls down to nearly zero at this high frequency range.

The presence of two (4n+2)-electron conjugated systems in perpendicular planes results in considerable aromatic stabilization. Despite having two fewer hydrogens, the 6 pi e-2 sigma e 3,5-dehydrophenyl cation (C6H3+, 1) is 32.7 (CCSD(T)/6-31G**) and 35.2 kcal/mol (RMP4sdtq/6-3iG*//RMP2(fu)/6-31G*) more stable than the phenyl cation (evaluated by an isodesmic reaction involving benzene and m-dehydrobenzene (4)). Cation 1, the global C6H3+ minimum, is 11.7,24.2, 11.8, and 30.4 kcal/mol lower in energy than the 2,6- (11) and 3,4-dehydrophenyl (12) cations as well as the open-chain isomers 13 and 14 (RMP4sdtq/6-31G*//RMP2(fu)/6-31G* + ZPE(RMP2(fu)/6-31G*)). The stability of 1 is increased hyperconjugatively by 2,4,6-trisilyl substitution. The double aromaticity of 1 is indicated by the computed magnetic susceptibility exaltations (IGLO/II//RMP2(fu)/6-31G*) of -5.2, -6.8, -15, and -23.2 relative to 11, 12, 13, and 14, respectively. Thus, 1 fulfills the geometric, energetic, and magnetic criteria of aromaticity. The double aromaticity of the D-6h cyclo[6]carbon is apparent from the same criteria

High-temperature reactions (Ca 900-degrees-C) involving albite, K-feldspar or plagioclase and K, Ba-or K, Sr chlorides were experimentally studied. These experiments reveal that the reaction between K-exchanged albite, potash feldspar, or plagioclase and Ba-chloride/Ba-K chloride results in the formation of celsian by the breakdown of the starting feldspar structure above 800-degrees-C. Sr-feldspar does not form under similar conditions. A size-effect of the large M-site cation appears to be responsible for the formation of celsian. The reaction between K-feldspar and barium chloride may be used as a method for synthesizing celsian.

Ion transport across phospholipid vesicles was studied by 7Li and 23Na-NMR using an aqueous anionic paramagnetic shift reagent, dysprosium nitrilotriacetate [Dy(NTA)2]3?, mediated by ionophores, lasalocid A and A23187. The intra- and extracellular 7Li and 23Na-NMR signals were well separated (20?Hz) at mM concentration of the shift reagent. The observed data on the rate constant for lithium transport across DPPC vesicles at various concentrations of the ionophores indicated that lasalocid A is a more efficient carrier for lithium ion compared with the sodium ion transport by this ionophore, while A23187 was not specific to either of the ions (Li or Na). ©1998 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A series of bile acid-based crown ethers (7a-c,12 and 13) were easily constructed from readily available precursors. Measurement of association constants (K-a) with alkali metal picrates in CHCl3 showed that azacrown ethers 7a-c and Chola-Cuowns 12 and 13 show greater binding towards Rb+ and K+. The presence of the aromatic moieties showed subtle changes in the binding properties. Insight II minimized structures show very different conformations of aromatic units in 7a-b and 13.

Through a systematic study of several diphenylcyclopropane derivatives, we have inferred that the cations present within a zeolite control the excited-state chemistry of these systems. In the parent 1,2-diphenylcylopropane, the cation binds to the two phenyl rings in a sandwich-type arrangement, and such a mode of binding prevents cis-to-trans isomerization. Once an ester or amide group is introduced into the system (derivatives of 2beta,3beta-diphenylcyclopropane-1alpha-carboxylic acid), the cation binds to the carbonyl group present in these chromophores and such a binding has no influence on the cis-trans isomerization process. Cation-reactant structures computed at density functional theory level have been very valuable in rationalizing the observed photochemical behavior of diphenylcyclopropane derivatives included in zeolites. While the parent system, 1,2-diphenyleylopropane, has been extensively investigated in the context of chiral induction in solution, owing to its failure to isomerize from cis to trans, the same could not be investigated in zeolites. However, esters of 2beta,3beta-diphenylcyclopropane-1alpha-carboxylic acid could be studied within zeolites in the context of chiral induction. Chiral induction as high 20% ee and 55% de has been obtained with selected systems. These numbers, although low, are much higher than what has been obtained in solution with the same system or with the parent system by other investigators (maximum similar to10% ee).

The activity of NiAl2O4 in NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been measured by using a solid oxide galvanic cell of the type, Pt, Ni + NiAl2O4 + Al2O3(α)/CaOZrO2/Ni + NixMg1−xAl2O4 + Al2O3(α). Pt, in the temperature range 750–1150°C. The activities in the spinel solid solutions show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The cation distribution in the solid solutions has been calculated using site preference energies independent of composition for Ni2+, Mg2+, and Al3+ ions obtained from crystal field theory and measured cation disorder in pure NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4, and assumi g ideal mixing of cations on the tetrahedral and octahedral positions. The calculated values correctly predict the decrease in the fraction, α, of Ni2+ ions on tetrahedral sites for 1>x>0.25, observed by Porta et al. [J. Solid State Chem.11, 135 (1974)] but do not support their tentative evidence for an increase in α for x < 0.25. The measured excess free energy of mixing can be completely accounted for by using either the calculated or the measured cation distributions. This suggests that the Madelung energy is approximately a linear function of composition in the solid solutions. The composition of NiOMgO solid solutions in equilibrium with NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been calculated from the results and information available in literature.

The distribution of zinc cation between crystallographically nonequivalent positions in ZnFe204 has been determined by anomalous X-ray scattering near the Zn K absorption edge. Measured intensity ratio with two energies close to the edge can be quantitatively explained only by assigning all zinc cations to the tetrahedral position in the approximately cubic close packed array of oxygen ions. A similar conclusion has also been reached for ZnxFe3-x04 solid solutions with x = 0.73, 0.54 and 0.35 employing the improved X-ray method. This is consistent with the EXAFS results which indicate an almost unchanged environmental structure around zinc cation in these solid solutions.
Alkylation of toluene by methanol over alkali exchanged zeolite-X: side chain versus ring alkylation
Resumo:
The ring versus side-chain alkylation of toluene with methanol over alkali-exchanged zeolite-X of differing basicity has been investigated by in situ infrared spectroscopy and TPD measurements. Over the basic Cs-exchanged zeolite the product of alkylation is styrene/ethylbenzene while over the acidic Li-exchanged zeolite ring alkylation occurs to give mainly xylene as the product. FTIR and TPD investigations reveal that, the key difference in the two types of alkylation processes lies in the state of the adsorbed methanol present at higher temperatures in the zeolite. In basic zeolites, methanol decomposes to formaldehyde and formates. The former is the key ‘side-chain’ alkylating species that leads to the formation of styrene. In the acidic zeolites it is shown that methanol bound to the acid sites plays an active role in the ‘ring alkylation’ of toluene to xylene.

The single-crystal X-ray structure of a cation-templated manganese-oxalate coordination polymer [NH(C2H5)(3)][Mn-2(ox)(3)]center dot(5H(2)O)] (1) is reported. In 1, triethylammonium cation is entrapped between the cavities of 2-D honeycomb layers constructed by oxalate and water. The acyclic tetrameric water clusters and discrete water assemble the parallel 2-D honeycomb oxalate layers via an intricate array of hydrogen bonds into an overall 3-D network. The magnetic susceptibility, with and without the water cluster, are reported with infrared and EPR studies.

A molecular dynamics study of the dependence of diffusivity of the cation on ionic radii in molten AgI is reported. We have employed modified Parinello-Rahman-Vashistha interionic pair potential proposed by Shimojo and Kobayashi.(1) Our results suggest that the diffusivity of the cation exhibits an increase followed by a decrease as the ionic radius is increased. Several structural and dynamical properties are reported.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. The design and synthesis of an intensely blue rhodium(III) complex 3]+ of a new N,N-donor ligand, 8-(quinolin-8-ylamino)pyrido2,1-c]1,2,4]benzotriazin-11-ium, 2]+, which contains a planar pendant triazinium arm, is described. Structural characterization for 3]+ was carried out by using various spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The organometallic rhodium(III) compound shows a ligand-based reversible reduction at 0.65 V. The electrochemically reduced compound displays a single-line EPR spectrum that signifies the formation of ligand-based free radicals. Compound 3]+ shows a binding propensity to calf thymus DNA to give a Kapp value of 6.05X105 M1. The parent triazinium salt, pyrido2,1-c]1,2,4]benzotriazin-11-ium 1]+ and the ligand salt 2]+ exhibit photoinduced cleavage of DNA in UV-A light, whereas the reference Rh complex 3]+ photocleaves DNA with red light (647.1 nm). The compounds show photonuclease activities under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Mechanistic investigations under aerobic conditions with several inhibitors indicate the formation of hydroxyl radicals by means of a photoredox pathway. Under anaerobic conditions, it is believed that a photoinduced oxidation of DNA mechanism is operative. Compound 3]+ exhibits photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells to give IC50 values of (12+/-0.9) mu M in UV-A light at 365 nm and (31.4+/-1.1) mu M in the dark.
