Hollow carbon nanofibers with circular and rectangular opening were prepared by using electrospun silica fibers as templates. Silica fibers were synthesized by electrospinning, and they were coated with a carbon layer formed by thermal decomposition and carbonization of polystyrene under a nitrogen atmosphere. Hollow carbon nanofibers with circular and rectangular openings were then obtained after the silica core was etched by hydrofluoric acid. The carbon nanofibers with different morphologies also could be used as templates to fabricate silicon carbide fibers. The silicon carbide fibers with circular and rectangular openings could be obtained by using hollow carbon nanofibers and carbon belts as templates, respectively.

A novel nonenzymatic glucose sensor was developed based on the renewable Ni nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanofiber paste (NiCFP) electrode. The NiCF nanocomposite was prepared by combination of electrospinning technique with thermal treatment method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that large amounts of spherical nanoparticles were well dispersed on the surface or embedded in the carbon nanofibers. And the nanoparticles were composed of Ni and NiO, as revealed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). In application to nonenzymatic glucose determination, the renewable NiCFP electrodes, which were constructed by simply mixing the electrospun nanocomposite with mineral oil, exhibited strong and fast amperometric response without being poisoned by chloride ions. Low detection limit of 1 mu M with wide linear range from 2 mu M to 2.5 mM (R = 0.9997) could be obtained.

The possibility of fabricating carbon nanofibers from cellulose nanofibers was investigated. Cellulose nanofiber of ~50 nm in diameter was produced using ball milling in an eco-friendly manner. The effect of the drying techniques of cellulose nanofibers on the morphology of carbon residue was studied. After pyrolysis of freeze-dried cellulose nanofibers below 600 °C, amorphous carbon fibers of ~20 nm in diameter were obtained. The pyrolysis of oven-dried precursors resulted in the loss of original fibrous structures. The different results arising from the two drying techniques are attributed to the difference in the spatial distance between cellulose nanofiber precursors.

Carbon nanofibers were fabricated by pyrolysis of plant-based cellulose nanofibers. The findings demonstrate the possibility of obtaining strong and commercially competitive carbon nanofibers that are used in many industries including aerospace, automobile and electronics.

In this study, a finite element-based model was developed to investigate the mechanical behaviour of functionally graded carbon nanofibre (CNF)/phenolic nanocomposites. Four functionally graded nanocomposites (FGNs), a non-graded nanocomposite (NGN), and a pure phenolic with the same geometry and total carbon nanofibre content were designed and fabricated. Flexural tests were conducted to validate the proposed finite element model. Close agreement was obtained between experimental results and numerical predictions. The results showed that flexural modulus can be improved about 45% by controlling the CNF content across the thickness of the samples.

Precursor fibers with diameters in nanometer scale and highly aligned polymer chains in fibers are highly promising for the preparation of high-performance carbon nanofibers, but are challenging to make. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that a carbon nanofiber precursor can be prepared by the electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile into a nanofiber yarn and by the subsequent drawing treatment of the yarn in dry conditions. The yarn shows excellent drawing performance, which can be drawn evenly up to 6 times of its original length without breaking. The drawing treatment improves the yarn and fiber uniformity, polymer chain orientation within the fibers, as well as yarn tension and modules, but shows decreased yarn and fiber diameter and elongation at break. The drawing temperature and force show influences on the drawing behavior. The highest strength and modules (362 ± 37 MPa and 9.2 ± 1.4 GPa, respectively) are found on the yarn drawn by 5 times its length, which increased by 800% and 1800% when compared to the as-spun yarn. Through un-optimized stabilization and carbonization treatments, we further demonstrate that the carbonized nanofiber yarn shows comparable tensile properties as the commercial carbon fibers. This paper presents systematic studies on aligning carbon nanofillers in epoxy by external fields, either electric fields or magnetic fields, to create nanocomposites with greatly improved mechanical and electrical properties. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) were observed to align along the field direction in the epoxy resin. Compared to the unmodifed epoxy and those with randomly-oriented carbon nanofillers, the nanocomposites with aligned carbon nanofillers showed significantly higher fracture toughness and electrical conductivity along the direction of the external field. Compared with randomly-oriented nanofillers, aligned GnPs and CNFs produced 40% and 27% improvement in fracture energy at 1.0 wt%, bringing the total increase in fracture energy over the neat polymer to more than 10 times. Several key toughening mechanisms were identified through fractographic analysis, which was used to develop predictive models to quantify the increases in the value of GIc as a result of 1-D and 2D carbon nanofillers. The present findings suggest that aligning carbon nanofillers presents a very promising technique to create multi-scale reinforcement with greatly increased electric conductivity and fracture toughness.

Syntesis of carbon nanomaterials from corn waste (DDGS). The world's largest ethanol producer (USA) uses corn as feedstock. DDGS (distillers dried grains with solubles) is the main waste generated from this process (around 32 million t/year). DDGS samples were pyrolyzed at 1000 degrees C in a furnace with controlled atmosphere. The effluent was channeled to a second furnace, in which catalyst substrates were placed. Chromatographic analysis was used to evaluate the gaseous effluents, showing that the catalyst reduced hydrocarbon emissions. The solid products formed were analyzed by SEM and TEM. Graphitic structures and carbon nanofibers, 50 mu m in length and with diameters of 80-200 nm, were formed.

Amorphous carbon nanofibers (CNFs), produced by the polymer blend technique, are activated by CO2 (ACNFs). Monoliths are synthesized from the precursor and from some ACNFs. Morphology and textural properties of these materials are studied. When compared with other activating agents (steam and alkaline hydroxides), CO2 activation renders suitable yields and, contrarily to most other precursors, turns out to be advantageous for developing and controlling their narrow microporosity (< 0.7 nm), VDR(CO2). The obtained ACNFs have a high compressibility and, consequently, a high packing density under mechanical pressure which can also be maintained upon monolith synthesis. H2 adsorption is measured at two different conditions (77 K / 0.11 MPa, and 298 K / 20 MPa) and compared with other activated carbons. Under both conditions, H2 uptake depends on the narrow microporosity of the prepared ACNFs. Interestingly, at room temperature these ACNFs perform better than other activated carbons, despite their lower porosity developments. At 298 K they reach a H2 adsorption capacity as high as 1.3 wt.%, and a remarkable value of 1 wt.% in its mechanically resistant monolith form.

En este artículo se han estudiado los cambios en las propiedades mecánicas de los morteros de cemento Portland debido a la adición de nanofibras de carbono (NFC). Se han determinado las resistencias a flexotracción y a compresión de los morteros en relación a la cantidad de NFC añadidas a la mezcla, al tiempo de curado y a la porosidad y densidad de los mismos. Además se han investigado los niveles de corrosión de barras de acero embebidas en pastas de cemento con NFC expuestos al ataque por carbonatación y por ingreso de cloruros. El aumento en el porcentaje de NFC añadido se traduce en un aumento la intensidad de corrosión registrada y una mejora de las propiedades mecánicas.

The Rh diamine complex [Rh(COD)NH2(CH2)2NH(CH2)3Si(OCH3)3] BF4 was heterogenized by covalent bonding on two carbon xerogels and on carbon nanofibers, with the objective of preparing hydrogenation hybrid catalysts. Gas adsorption, SEM, TEM, DTP, ICP-OES and XPS were used for characterization. The results indicate that the active molecule is mainly located in supermicropores and produces microporosity blockage. The hybrid catalysts are more active than the homogeneous complex, but the Rh complex is partially reduced upon reaction. This modification is related to the nature of the support, which also shows effects in the stabilization against sintering of the Rh particles formed. The support porosity is a key factor in the selectivity differences between the catalysts.

Different types of crystalline carbon nanomaterials were used to reinforce polyaniline for use in electromechanical bilayer bending actuators. The objective is to analyze how the different graphitic structures of the nanocarbons affect and improve the in situ polymerized polyaniline composites and their subsequent actuator behavior. The nanocarbons investigated were multiwalled carbon nanotubes, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes, helical-ribbon carbon nanofibers and graphene oxide, each one presenting different shape and structural characteristics. Films of nanocarbon-PAni composite were tested in a liquid electrolyte cell system. Experimental design was used to select the type of nanocarbon filler and composite loadings, and yielded a good balance of electromechanical properties. Raman spectroscopy suggests good interaction between PAni and the nanocarbon fillers. Electron microscopy showed that graphene oxide dispersed the best, followed by multiwall carbon nanotubes, while nitrogen-doped nanotube composites showed dispersion problems and thus poor performance. Multiwall carbon nanotube composite actuators showed the best performance based on the combination of bending angle, bending velocity and maximum working cycles, while graphene oxide attained similarly good performance due to its best dispersion. This parallel testing of a broad set of nanocarbon fillers on PAni-composite actuators is unprecedented to the best of our knowledge and shows that the type and properties of the carbon nanomaterial are critical to the performance of electromechanical devices with other conditions remaining equal.

Partially aligned and oriented polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based nanofibers were electrospun from PAN and SWNTs/PAN in the solution of dimethylformamide(DMF) to make the carbon nanofibers. The as-spun nanofibers were hot-stretched in an oven to enhance its orientation and crystallinity. Then it were stabilized at 250 square under a stretched stress, and carbonized at 1000 square in N-2 atmosphere by fixing the length of the stabilized nanofiber to convert them into carbon nanofibers. With this hot-stretched process and with the introduction of SWNTs, the mechanical properties will be enhanced correspondingly. The crystallinity of the stretched fibers confirmed by X-ray diffraction has also increased. For PAN nanofibers, the improved fiber alignment and crystallinity resulted in the increased mechanical properties, such as the modulus and tensile strength of the nanofibers. It was concluded that the hot-stretched nanofiber and the SWNTs/PAN nanofibers can be used as a potential precursor to produce high-performance carbon composites.

Composite fibers composed of poly(L-lactide)-grafted hydroxyapatite (PLA-g-HAP) nanoparticles and polylactide (PLA) matrix were prepared by electro-spinning. Environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to investigate the morphology of the composite fibers and the distribution of PLA-g-HAP nanoparticles in the fibers, respectively. At a low content (similar to 4 wt%) of PLA-g-HAP, the nanoparticles dispersed uniformly in the fibers and the composite fibrous mats exhibited higher strength properties, compared with the pristine PLA fiber mats and the simple hydroxyapatite/PLA blend fiber mats. But when the content of PLA-g-HAP further increased, the nanoparticles began to aggregate, which resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the composite fiber mats. The degradation behaviors of the composite fiber mats were closely related to the content of PLA-g-HAP. At a low PLA-g-HAP content, degradation may be delayed due to the reduction of autocatalytic degradation of PLA. When PLA-g-HAP content was high, degradation rate increased because of the enhanced wettability of the composite fibers and the escape of the nanoparticles from fiber surfaces during incubation.
