Background: Trypanosoma evansi infections, commonly called 'surra', cause significant economic losses to livestock industry. While this infection is mainly restricted to large animals such as camels, donkeys and equines, recent reports indicate their ability to infect humans. There are no World Animal Health Organization (WAHO) prescribed diagnostic tests or vaccines available against this disease and the available drugs show significant toxicity. There is an urgent need to develop improved methods of diagnosis and control measures for this disease. Unlike its related human parasites T. brucei and T. cruzi whose genomes have been fully sequenced T. evansi genome sequence remains unavailable and very little efforts are being made to develop improved methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. With a view to identify potential diagnostic markers and drug targets we have studied the clinical proteome of T. evansi infection using mass spectrometry (MS).Methodology/Principal Findings: Using shot-gun proteomic approach involving nano-lc Quadrupole Time Of Flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry we have identified over 160 proteins expressed by T. evansi in mice infected with camel isolate. Homology driven searches for protein identification from MS/MS data led to most of the matches arising from related Trypanosoma species. Proteins identified belonged to various functional categories including metabolic enzymes; DNA metabolism; transcription; translation as well as cell-cell communication and signal transduction. TCA cycle enzymes were strikingly missing, possibly suggesting their low abundances. The clinical proteome revealed the presence of known and potential drug targets such as oligopeptidases, kinases, cysteine proteases and more.Conclusions/Significance: Previous proteomic studies on Trypanosomal infections, including human parasites T. brucei and T. cruzi, have been carried out from lab grown cultures. For T. evansi infection this is indeed the first ever proteomic study reported thus far. In addition to providing a glimpse into the biology of this neglected disease, our study is the first step towards identification of diagnostic biomarkers, novel drug targets as well as potential vaccine candidates to fight against T. evansi infections.

This is the Salmon Scale Reading Investigation from 1972 by Cornwall River Authority. The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale reading, the biology of age classes of the salmon populations of the River Tamar, River Tavy, River Lynher, River Fowey, River Camel and River Plym. It contains for each river the numbers of caught salmon, number of scales received and which were unreadable and percentages in each age group separately for net and rod caught. Length and weight frequency distribution histograms have been plotted to show the size distribution of the various sea age group.

This is the River Fowey Salmon Action Plan Consultation document produced by the Environment Agency in 2003. The report pays attention on the external consultation of the River Fowey Salmon Action Plan (SAP). The River Fowey SAP follows the format of those completed for the Rivers Tamar, Lynher, Tavy and Camel. It is the 5th of 7 action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by the Cornwall Area Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity Team. This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Fowey SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. Notably, there are historic workings for copper and china clay and two significant potable supply reservoirs (Siblyback and Colliford) which have been constructed within the catchment during the past 35 years. The whole of the Fowey catchment is set at the highest water quality grading of RE1 and this standard is met in all reaches of the River Fowey and its tributaries.

This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Plym SAP follows the format of those completed for the rivers Tamar, Lynher, Tavy, Camel and Fowey. It is the sixth of seven action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by Cornwall Area. The River Plym SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. Notably, there are historic workings for china clay and a significant potable water supply at Burrator Reservoir. The main River Plym has been designated as River Ecosystem class 1 for its water quality objectives. This is the highest water quality target set for rivers. This standard has been met in all reaches of the main River Plym and River Meavy.

This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Yealm Salmon Action Plan follows the format of those completed for the rivers Tamar, Lynher, Tavy, Camel, Fowey and Plym. It is the final one of seven action plans that will be produced for salmon rivers managed by Cornwall Area. The River Yealm SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery. Notably there are potable water abstractions in the headwaters, workings for china clay on the main tributary, two inert waste landfill sites and an aggregate quarry adjacent to the main river and inputs from several Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and two industrial estates. The main River Yealm has been designated as River Ecosystem Class 1 for its water quality objectives. This is the highest water quality target set for rivers.

The effect of fortification of skim milk powder and sodium caseinate on Cheddar cheeses was investigated. SMP fortification led to decreased moisture, increased yield, higher numbers of NSLAB and reduced proteolysis. The functional and texture properties were also affected by SMP addition and formed a harder, less meltable cheese than the control. NaCn fortification led to increased moisture, increased yield, decreased proteolysis and higher numbers of NSLAB. The functional and textural properties were affected by fortification with NaCn and formed a softer cheese that had similar or less melt than the control. Reducing the lactose:casein ratio of Mozzarella cheese by using ultrafiltration led to higher pH, lower insoluble calcium, lower lactose, galactose and lactic acid levels in the cheese. The texture and functional properties of the cheese was affected by varying the lactose:casein ratio and formed a harder cheese that had similar melt to the control later in ripening. The flavour and bake properties were also affected by decreased lactose:casein ratio; the cheeses had lower acid flavour and blister colour than the control cheese. Varying the ratio of αs1:β-casein in Cheddar cheese affected the texture and functionality of the cheese but did not affect insoluble calcium, proteolysis or pH. Increasing the ratio of αs1:β-casein led to cheese with lower meltability and higher hardness without adverse effects on flavour. Using camel chymosin in Mozzarella cheese instead of calf chymosin resulted in cheese with lower proteolysis, higher softening point, higher hardness and lower blister quantity. The texture and functional properties that determine the shelf life of Mozzarella were maintained for a longer ripening period than when using calf chymosin therefore increasing the window of functionality of Mozzarella. In summary, the results of the trials in this thesis show means of altering the texture, functional, rheology and sensory properties of Mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses.

This article distinguishes three dimensions to learning design: a technological infrastructure, a conceptual framework for practice that focuses on the creation of structured sequences of learning activities, and a way to represent and share practice through the use of mediating artefacts. Focusing initially on the second of these dimensions, the article reports the key findings from an exploratory study, eLIDA CAMEL. This project examined a hitherto under-researched aspect of learning design: what teachers who are new to the domain perceive to be its value as a framework for practice in the design of both flexible and classroom-based learning. Data collection comprised 13 case studies constructed from participants' self-reports. These suggest that providing students with a structured sequence of learning activities was the major value to teachers. The article additionally discusses the potential of such case studies to function as mediating artefacts for practitioners who are considering experimenting with learning design.

Collaborative approaches in leadership and management are increasingly acknowledged to play a key role in successful institutions in the learning and skills sector (LSS) (Ofsted, 2004). Such approaches may be important in bridging the potential 'distance' (psychological, cultural, interactional and geographical) (Collinson, 2005) that may exist between 'leaders' and 'followers', fostering more democratic communal solidarity. This paper reports on a 2006-07 research project funded by the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) that aimed to collect and analyse data on 'collaborative leadership' (CL) in the learning and skills sector. The project investigated collaborative leadership and its potential for benefiting staff through trust and knowledge-sharing in communities of practice (CoPs). The project forms part of longer-term educational research investigating leadership in a collaborative inquiry process (Jameson et al., 2006). The research examined the potential for CL to benefit institutions, analysing respondents' understanding of and resistance to collaborative practices. Quantitative and qualitative data from senior managers and lecturers was analysed using electronic data in SPSS and Tropes Zoom. The project aimed to recommend systems and practices for more inclusive, diverse leadership (Lumby et al., 2005). Collaborative leadership has increasingly gained international prominence as emphasis shifted towards team leadership beyond zero-sum 'leadership'/ 'followership' polarities into more mature conceptions of shared leadership spaces, within which synergistic leadership spaces can be mediated. The relevance of collaboration within the LSS has been highlighted following a spate of recent government-driven policy developments in FE. The promotion of CL addresses concerns about the apparent 'remoteness' of some senior managers, and the 'neo-management' control of professionals which can increase 'distance' between leaders and 'followers' and may de-professionalise staff in an already disempowered sector. Positive benefit from 'collaborative advantage' tends to be assumed in idealistic interpretations of CL, but potential 'collaborative inertia' may be problematic in a sector characterised by rapid top-down policy changes and continuous external audit and surveillance. Constant pressure for achievement against goals leaves little time for democratic group negotiations, despite the desires of leaders to create a more collaborative ethos. Yet prior models of intentional communities of practice potentially offer promise for CL practice to improve group performance despite multiple constraints. The CAMEL CoP model (JISC infoNet, 2006) was linked to the project, providing one practical way of implementing CL within situated professional networks.The project found that a good understanding of CL was demonstrated by most respondents, who thought it could enable staff to share power and work in partnership to build trust and conjoin skills, abilities and experience to achieve common goals for the good of the sector. However, although most respondents expressed agreement with the concept and ideals of CL, many thought this was currently an idealistically democratic, unachievable pipe dream in the LSS. Many respondents expressed concerns with the 'audit culture' and authoritarian management structures in FE. While there was a strong desire to see greater levels of implementation of CL, and 'collaborative advantage' from the 'knowledge sharing benefit potential' of team leadership, respondents also strongly advised against the pitfalls of 'collaborative inertia'. A 'distance' between senior leadership views and those of staff lower down the hierarchy regarding aspects of leadership performance in the sector was reported. Finally, the project found that more research is needed to investigate CL and develop innovative methods of practical implementation within autonomous communities of professional practice.

Food is one of the main exogenous sources of genotoxic compounds. In heated food products, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent a priority group of genotoxic, mutagenic and/or carcinogenic chemical pollutants with adverse long-term health effects. People can be exposed to these compounds through different environments and via various routes: inhalation, ingestion of foods and water and even percutaneously. The presence of these compounds in food may be due to environmental contamination, to industrial handling and processing of foods and to oil processing and refining. The highest levels of these compounds are found in smoked foods, in seafood which is found in polluted waters, in grilled meats and, to a lesser extent, in vegetable fats and oils. Lower levels of PAHs are found in vegetables and in cereals and its products.

The objective the study was to determine the levels of glucose and triglycerides in seminal plasma of 10 guinea pigs, which were fed for a period of 2 months with a diet containing 10% more ED. The level of glucose found in seminal plasma was 11.59 ± 0.5 mg/dL and triglyceride value was 55.95 ± 3.2 mg/dL, while the motility was 97% on average. We conclude that in guinea pigs the levels both glucose and triglycerides were increased by major level of ED in feed, but the spermatic motility was not.

The Urban Oasis celebrates Ajman’s history as well as encourages a greater future. Stitching into the existing urban fabric of Ajman and the surrounding cities, the master plan provides an entrance that encases a number of different events. From studying other successful event cities, it became apparent the need for a variety of events over a yearly basis.

Sustainability is another key feature of the master plan. From the way the urban network of streets are formed and orientated to how energy is produced and conserved. Another sustainable aspect that drove the master plan was the retention of the camel track. An important and incredible event in itself, the camel track provides an opportunity to celebrate Ajman’s culture and retain an important part of its history.

Nietzsche employed metaphors frequently throughout his works. This is especially true in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Although this is often aesthetically pleasing, it can be very difficult for the reader to understand the nuances and interconnections with the various metaphors. This is generally considered one of the main drawbacks of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. While it is beautifully written in a style that is incomparable today, much of what it is attempting to communicate is lost on the reader. This thesis explores the connection between the metamorphoses of the spirit and the seasons in Thus'Spoke Zarathustra, with the camel spirit corresponding to autumn, the lion spirit with winter, the child spirit with spring, and finally the Overman with summer. Although the Overman is not included among the three metamorphoses of the spirit, it will be argued that the Overman is a separate metamorphosis and must not be conflated with the child spirit despite their similarities. While Thus Spoke Zarathustra will be the primary text used, Nietzsche's other works will be employed to demonstrate that this connection between the metamorphoses of the spirit and the seasons runs through much of his thought. By demonstrating how the seasons are used in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, a deeper understanding of the work will be revealed. Further, this thesis will demonstrate that it is an intentional connection, and not merely coincidental or something that has been constructed and imposed upon the work. Bringing this correspondence between the metamorphoses of the spirit and the seasons to light will result in the need to rethink particular notions of Nietzsche's philosophy. The most apparent involves the Overman and the process of overcoming. Although the Overman has often been viewed as "the end" in the cycle of metamorphoses, it will be argued that this is not the case. The typical interpretation of the metamorphoses of the spirit regard it as a linear progression; however, it will be shown that the metamorphoses of the spirit is cyclical with the camel, lion, and child spirits endlessly repeating, much like the seasons.

Demostrar conceptualmente que es un constructo de la 'involucración' aporta una base teórica que permite generar una escala de medida, capaz de determinar, mediante una puntuación, si el producto o marca en estudio será potencialmente relevante para el consumidor. Encontrar y validar una escala capaz de disminuir el riesgo que toma de decisiones, sirviendo de ayuda en la evaluación de diferentes alternativas de comunicación publicitaria.. Para la administración de las escalas se contó con 174 varones y 76 mujeres, estudiantes universitarios entre los 18 y 30 años. Para el diseño experimental participaron 96 sujetos, todos diestros y de igual agudeza visual. 50 mujeres y 46 hombres.. El procedimiento a seguir ha sido definir los procesos implicados en el hecho publicitario desde la concepción del receptor como un procesador universal de información; investigar el concepto de involucración y su importancia en dichos procesos; generar y comparar, no sólo el instrumento basado en la involucración, sino distintas escalas de medida /tipo Fishbein/ y sus correlaciones con procedimientos más experimentales, que utilizan el tiempo de reacción /TR/ como variable dependiente, en línea con los estudios de procesamiento de información sustentados en las corrientes actuales del 'paradigma cognitivo'. El producto de consumo masivo seleccionado fue el tabaco, concretamente las marcas Winston, Camel y Marlboro. En una primera etapa del trabajo se procedió a traducir la escala propuesta por Zaichkowsky /1985/, Escala de Involucración. El procedimiento tipo Fishbein se utilizó para generar una escala relacionada con el producto y marcas en estudio. Se trata de tres diseños experimentales, uno por cada uno de las marcas en estudio, de 2X4, donde el primer factor corresponde a ser o no fumador y el segundo a la marca elegida por el sujeto.. 1. El tipo de escala escogido, si bien venía determinado por las teoría implicadas, resultó inadecuado para nuestros fines. Según nuestra experiencia las escalas tipo Fishbein pueden resultar útiles únicamente en administraciones a grupos reducidos de sujetos muy motivados y a los cuales se puede entrenar previamente en los tipos de razonamiento exigido. 2. En lo referente a la escala de involucración, creemos que las altas fiabilidades obtenidas tanto frente a marca como frente a producto, garantizan por una parte, la bondad de su traducción y, por otra, la fiabilidad de su aplicación a la población canaria. 3. Fue imposible encontrar diferencias entre los electores de las diferentes marcas, lo que, por otra parte, era de esperar en función de los resultados obtenidos en la encuesta y la explicación apuntada por los sujetos. 5. Creemos que es muy intersante la interacción encontrada entre la marca a identificar y el ser o no ser fumador.. Lo interesante de estos resultados es que apoya lo defendido por Stewart y Furse /1986/ en el sentido de que los elementos que influyen en la evocación no son los mismos que en la persuación..

Debido a la creciente presencia de publicidad en todos los ámbitos de nuestra sociedad, la comunidad educativa debe esforzarse para proporcionar a los jóvenes herramientas útiles que les ayuden a ser críticos con la enorme información publicitaria que reciben y, en consecuencia, a ser buenos consumidores. En este artículo se hace un análisis exhaustivo de la campaña publicitaria gráfica de la marca de tabaco Camel, previamente se reseña la situación legal del consumo de tabaco, y la publicidad sobre el mismo en España. Se trata de una campaña con un enorme impacto sobre los adolescentes pues incide en valores como la ruptura de las normas establecidas, la aventura, la libertad o la vitalidad. Para concluir, se considera necesario restringir este tipo de publicidad, que atenta, en particular, contra la salud de los jóvenes, aumentar la publicidad formativa, crear un código ético y potenciar la formación para el consumo responsable.
