Although enzymuria tends to be associated to renal injury, there are no studies that have evaluated the presence of the enzyme gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) spectrophotometry in the urine using a non-nephrotoxic agent (Nerium oleander) in order to evaluate the possibility of false positive results. The urinary GGT/urinary creatinine concentration ratio (uGGT/uCr) of 10 healthy dogs was calculated and posteriorly confronted with data from clinical evaluation, hematological and serum biochemical profiles, creatinine clearance (CrC), urinalysis, urine protein/creatinine ratio (UPC), electrocardiogram, systemic blood pressure (SBP) and light and electron microscopy. The results for kidney histology, SBP, UPC and CrC were not significantly different in any of the time-points analyzed. However, uGGT/uCr was significantly higher when measured 4 hours and 24 hours after administration of N. oleander. The measurement of the urinary GGT enzyme, as performed in many studies, yielded false positive results in dogs poisoned by a non-nephrotoxic agent.

In this thesis methods of EPR spectroscopy were used to investigate polyion-counterion interactions in polyelectrolyte solutions. The fact that EPR techniques are local methods is exploited and by employing spin-carrying (i.e., EPR-active) probe ions it is possible to examine polyelectrolytes from the counterions’ point of view. It was possible to gain insight into i) the dynamics and local geometry of counterion attachment, ii) conformations and dynamics of local segments of the polyion in an indirect manner, and iii) the spatial distribution of spin probe ions that surround polyions in solution. Analysis of CW EPR spectra of dianion nitroxide spin probe Fremy’s salt (FS, potassium nitrosodisulfonate) in solutions of cationic PDADMAC polyelectrolyte revealed that FS ions and PDADMAC form transient ion pairs with a lifetime of less than 1 ns. This effect was termed as dynamic electrostatic attachment (DEA). By spectral simulation taking into account the rotational dynamics as a uniaxial Brownian reorientation, also the geometry of the attached state could be characterized. By variation of solvent, the effect of solvent viscosity and permittivity were investigated and indirect information of the polyelectrolyte chain motion was obtained. Furthermore, analysis of CW EPR data also indicates that in mixtures of organic solvent/water PDADMAC chains are preferentially solvated by the organic solvent molecules, while in purely aqueous mixtures the PDADMAC chain segments were found in different conformations depending on the concentration ratio R of FS counterions to PDADMAC repeat units.Broadenings in CW EPR spectra of FS ions were assigned to spin-exchange interaction and hence contain information on the local concentrations and distributions of the counterions. From analysis of these broadenings in terms of a modified cylindrical cell approach of polyelectrolyte theory, radial distribution functions for the FS ions in the different solvents were obtained. This approach breaks down in water above a threshold value of R, which again indicates that PDADMAC chain conformations are altered as a function of R. Double electron-electron resonance (DEER) measurements of FS ions were carried out to probe the distribution of attached counterions along polyelectrolyte chains. For a significant fraction of FS spin probes in solution with a rigid-rod model polyelectrolyte containing charged Ru2+-centers, a bimodal distance distribution was found that nicely reproduced the spacings of direct and next-neighbor Ru2+-centers along the polyelectrolyte: 2.35 and 4.7 nm. For the system of FS/PDADMAC, DEER data could be simulated by assuming a two-state distribution of spin probes, one state corresponding to a homogeneous (3-dimensional) distribution of spin probes in the polyelectrolyte bulk and the other to a linear (1-dimensional) distribution of spin probes that are electrostatically condensed along locally extended PDADMAC chain segments. From this analysis it is suggested that the PDADMAC chains form locally elongated structures of a size of at least ~5 nm.

A liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric assay with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization for quantification of ondansetron and its main metabolite 8-hydroxyondansetron in human plasma was presented. The enantiomeric separation was achieved on a Chiralcel OD-R column containing cellulose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate). The validation data were within the required limits. The assay was successfully applied to authentic plasma samples. Quantitative results from postoperative patients receiving ondansetron demonstrated a great interindividual variability in postoperative plasma drug concentrations, the metabolites were not detected in their unconjugated form. A wide variation in the S-(+)-/R-(-)-ondansetron concentration ratio between 0.14 and 7.18 is indicative for a stereoselective disposition or metabolism. In further studies CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 genotype dependent metabolism of ondansetron enantiomers as well as of co-administered drugs and clinical efficacy of the medication should be tested.

We report the concentrations of 28 PAHs, 15 oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) and 11 trace metals/metalloids (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn) in muscle and gut + gill tissues of demersal fishes (Drapane africana, Cynoglossus senegalensis and Pomadasys peroteti) from three locations along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea (Ghana). The concentrations of ∑ 28PAHs in muscle tissues averaged 192 ng g− 1 dw (range: 71–481 ng g− 1 dw) and were not statistically different between locations. The concentrations of ∑ 28 PAHs were higher in guts + gills than in muscles. The PAH composition pattern was dominated by low molecular weight compounds (naphthalene, alkyl-naphthalenes and phenanthrene). All fish tissues had benzo[a]pyrene concentrations lower than the EU limit for food safety. Excess cancer risk from consumption of some fish was higher than the guideline value of 1 × 10− 6. The concentrations of ∑ 15 OPAHs in fish muscles averaged 422 ng g− 1 dw (range: 28–1715 ng g− 1dw). The ∑ 15 OPAHs/∑ 16 US-EPA PAHs concentration ratio was > 1 in 68% of the fish muscles and 100% of guts + gills. The log-transformed concentrations of PAHs and OPAHs in muscles, guts + gills were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with their octanol–water partitioning coefficients, strongly suggesting that equilibrium partitioning from water/sediment into fish tissue was the main mechanism of bioaccumulation. The trace metal concentrations in the fish tissues were in the medium range when compared to fish from other parts of the world. The concentrations of some trace metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) were higher in guts + gills than in muscle tissues. The target hazard quotients for metals were < 1 and did not indicate a danger to the local population. We conclude that the health risk arising from the consumption of the studied fish (due to their PAHs and trace metals content) is minimal.

Environmental conditions in the tropics favor the formation of polar polycyclic aromatic compound (polar PACs, such as oxygenated PAHs [OPAHs] and azaarenes [AZAs]), but little is known about these hazardous compounds in tropical soils. The objectives of this work were to determine (i) the level of contamination of soils (0–5 and 5–10 cm layers) from the tropical metropolis of Bangkok (Thailand) with OPAHs and AZAs and (ii) the influence of urban emission sources and soil properties on the distribution of PACs. We hypothesized that the higher solar insolation and microbial activity in the tropics than in the temperate zone will lead to enhanced secondary formation of OPAHs. Hence, OPAH to related parent-PAH ratios will be higher in the tropical soils of Bangkok than in temperate soils of Bratislava and Gothenburg. The concentrations of ∑15OPAHs (range: 12–269 ng g−1) and ∑4AZAs (0.1–31 ng g−1) measured in soils of Bangkok were lower than those in several cities of the industrialized temperate zone. The ∑15OPAHs (r = 0.86, p < 0.01) and ∑4AZAs (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) correlated significantly with those of ∑20PAHs highlighting similar sources and related fate. The octanol–water partition coefficient did not explain the transport to the subsoil, indicating soil mixing as the reason for the polar PAC load of the lower soil layer. Data on PAC concentrations in soils of Bratislava and Gothenburg were taken from published literature. The individual OPAH to parent-PAH ratios in soils of Bangkok were mostly higher than those of Bratislava and Gothenburg (e.g. 9-fluorenone/fluorene concentration ratio was 12.2 ± 6.7, 5.6 ± 2.4, and 0.7 ± 02 in Bangkok, Bratislava and Gothenburg soils, respectively) supporting the view that tropical environmental conditions and higher microbial activity likely lead to higher OPAH to parent-PAH ratios in tropical than in temperate soils.

Bio-optical characteristics of phytoplankton have been observed during two-year monitoring in the western Black Sea. High variability in light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton was due to change of pigment concentration and chlorophyll a specific absorption coefficient. A relationships between light absorption coefficients and chlorophyll a concentration have been found: for the blue maximum (a_ph(440) = 0.0413x**0.628; R**2 = 0.63) and for the red maximum (?_ph(678) = 0.0190x**0.843; R**2 = 0.83). Chlorophyll a specific absorption coefficients decreased while pigment concentration in the Sea increased. Observed variability in chlorophyll a specific absorption coefficient at chlorophyll a concentrations <1.0 mg/m**3 had seasonal features and was related with seasonal change of intracellular pigment concentration. Ratio between the blue and red maxima decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration (? = 2.14 x**-0.20; R**2 = 0.41). Variability of spectrally averaged absorption coefficient of phytoplankton (a'_ph ) on 95% depended on absorption coefficient at the blue maximum (y = 0.421x; R**2 = 0.95). Relation of a_ph with chlorophyll a concentration was described by a power function (y = 0.0173x**0.0709; R**2 = 0.65). Change of spectra shape was generally effected by seasonal dynamics of intracellular pigment concentration, and partly effected by taxonomic and cell-size structure of phytoplankton.

Manufacturing tolerances, along with a high concentration ratio, are key issues in order to obtain cheap CPV systems for mass production. Consequently, this manuscript presents a novel tolerant and cost effective concentrator optic: the domed-shaped Fresnel-Köhler, presenting a curved Fresnel lens as Primary Optical Element (POE). This concentrator is based on two previous successful CPV designs: the FK concentrator, based on a flat Fresnel lens, and the dome-shaped Fresnel lens system developed by Daido Steel, resulting on a superior concentrator. The manuscript shows outstanding simulation results for geometrical concentration factor of Cg? = ?1,230x: high tolerance and high optical efficiency, achieving acceptance angles of 1.18° (dealing to a CAP?=0.72) and efficiencies over 85% (without any anti-reflective coating). Moreover, Köhler integration provides good irradiance uniformity on the cell surface without increasing system complexity by means of any extra element. Daido Steel advanced technique for demolding injected plastic pieces will allow for easy manufacture of the dome-shaped POE of DFK concentrator.

Modules are an important part of the CPV system. By pursing, in our objective of a 35% efficiency module, we need to look forward a significant improvement in the state of the art of CPV modules since no commercial module is capable of achieving that efficiency. Achieving this efficiency will require high efficiency cells, progress in the optics lenses that are implemented in these modules, and also integration into module. Basic design of 35% CPV module is presented considering for practical and rapid industry application. The output is 385 W while its weight is only 18 kg. In spite of its high concentration ratio reaching 1,000 X, it acceptance angle is as high as 1.1 degree.

In this work the concept of tracking integration in concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) is revisited and developed further. With respect to conventional CPV, tracking integration eliminates the clear separation between stationary units of optics and solar cells, and external solar trackers. This approach is capable of further increasing the concentration ratio and makes high concentrating photovoltaics (> 500x) available for single-axis tracker installations. The reduced external solar tracking effort enables possibly cheaper and more compact installations. Our proposed optical system uses two laterally moving plano-convex lenses to achieve high concentration over a wide angular range of ±24°. The lateral movement allows to combine both steering and concentration of the incident direct sun light. Given the specific symmetry conditions of the underlying optical design problem, rotational symmetric lenses are not ideal for this application. For this type of design problems, a new free-form optics design method presented in previous papers perfectly matches the symmetry. It is derived directly from Fermat's principle, leading to sets of functional differential equations allowing the successive calculation of the Taylor series coeficients of each implicit surface function up to very high orders. For optical systems designed for wide field of view and with clearly separated optical surfaces, this new analytic design method has potential application in both fields of nonimaging and imaging optics.

Linear Fresnel collector arrays present some relevant advantages in the domain of concentrating solar power because of their simplicity, robustness and low capital cost. However, they also present important drawbacks and limitations, notably their average concentration ratio, which seems to limit significantly the performance of these systems. First, the paper addresses the problem of characterizing the mirror field configuration assuming hourly data of a typical year, in reference to a configuration similar to that of Fresdemo. For a proper comparative study, it is necessary to define a comparison criterion. In that sense, a new variable is defined, the useful energy efficiency, which only accounts for the radiation that impinges on the receiver with intensities above a reference value. As a second step, a comparative study between central linear Fresnel reflectors and compact linear Fresnel reflectors is carried out. This analysis shows that compact linear Fresnel reflectors minimize blocking and shading losses compared to a central configuration. However this minimization is not enough to overcome other negative effects of the compact Fresnel collectors, as the greater dispersion of the rays reaching the receiver, caused by the fact that mirrors must be located farther from the receiver, which yields to lower efficiencies.

The segmental approach has been considered to analyze dark and light I-V curves. The photovoltaic (PV) dependence of the open-circuit voltage (Voc), the maximum power point voltage (Vm), the efficiency (?) on the photogenerated current (Jg), or on the sunlight concentration ratio (X), are analyzed, as well as other photovoltaic characteristics of multijunction solar cells. The characteristics being analyzed are split into monoexponential (linear in the semilogarithmic scale) portions, each of which is characterized by a definite value of the ideality factor A and preexponential current J0. The monoexponentiality ensures advantages, since at many steps of the analysis, one can use the analytical dependences instead of numerical methods. In this work, an experimental procedure for obtaining the necessary parameters has been proposed, and an analysis of GaInP/GaInAs/Ge triple-junction solar cell characteristics has been carried out. It has been shown that up to the sunlight concentration ratios, at which the efficiency maximum is achieved, the results of calculation of dark and light I-V curves by the segmental method fit well with the experimental data. An important consequence of this work is the feasibility of acquiring the resistanceless dark and light I-V curves, which can be used for obtaining the I-V curves characterizing the losses in the transport part of a solar cell.

Porous, electrically insulating SiO2 layers containing polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) were deposited on glassy carbon electrodes by an electrochemically assisted deposition method. The obtained material was characterized by microscopic, spectroscopic and thermal techniques. Silica-PSS films modify the electrochemical response of the glassy carbon electrodes against selected redox probes. Positively charged species show reduced diffusivities across the SiO2-PSS pores, which resulted in a concentration ratio higher than 1 for these species. The opposite behaviour was found for negatively charged redox probes. These observations can be interpreted in terms of the different affinity of the GC/SiO2-PSS-modified electrode for the electroactive species, as a consequence of the negatively charged porous silica.

Lamotrigine concentrations were measured simultaneously (as far as was feasible) in stimulated and unstimulated saliva samples, and in plasma, from seven adult volunteers over a 32 h period following a single 50 mg dose of the drug, and in 20 children and adolescents during the course of routine antiepileptic therapy. In individuals there was a close correlation between the measurements at least 2 It after ingestion of the drug. Concentrations in stimulated and unstimulated saliva were similar; the stimulation produced little change in the saliva secretion rate. The saliva-to-plasma concentration ratio increased linearly by 0.78% for each 1 mg/L plasma lamotrigine concentration, with a mean value of 48.8% at a plasma lamotrigine concentration of 10 mg/L. With appropriate precautions as to the timing of saliva collections, and a single plasma lamotrigine concentration measurement to calibrate the salivary values in the individual, salivary lamotrigine concentration measurement appears to be a practicable approach to therapeutic drug monitoring. This has significant implications for the elucidation of the pharmacokinetics of lamotrigine in the paediatric population.
