The study of models for ``metal-enzyme-substrate'' interaction has been a proactive area of research owing to its biological and pharmacological importance. In this regard the ternary copper uracil complex with 1,10-phenanthroline represents metal-enzyme-substrate system for DNA binding enzymes. The synthesis of the complex, followed by slow evaporation of the reaction mixture forms two concomitant solvatomorph crystals viz., {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot H2O (1a)} and {Cu(phen)(mu-ura)(H2O)](n)center dot CH3OH (1b)}. Both complexes are structurally characterized, while elemental analysis, IR and EPR spectra were recorded for 1b (major product). In both complexes, uracil coordinates uniquely via N1 and N3 nitrogen atom acting as a bidentate bridging ligand forming a 1-D polymer. The two solvatomorphs were quantitatively analyzed for the differences with the aid of Hirshfeld surface analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes Li(H2O)(3)(CH3OH)](4)Cu2Br4]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)](4)(OH)(2) (1), Cu (H2O)(4)]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CC6H5)](2)Cl-2 center dot 5H(2)O (2), and a dinuclear zinc(II) complex Zn-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)] (3) have been synthesized using pyridine and benzoate functionality based new symmetrical dinucleating ligand, N, N'-Bis2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N, N'-Bis2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol (H(3)cpdp). Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have been synthesized by carrying out reaction of the ligand H3cpdp with stoichiometric amounts of Cu-2(O2CCH3)(4)(H2O)(2)], CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O/C6H5COONa, and Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively, in methanol in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature. Characterizations of the complexes have been done using various analytical techniques including single crystal X-ray structure determination. The X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the copper(II) ions in complexes 1 and 2 are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Cu-Cu separation of 3.455(8) angstrom and 3.492(1)angstrom, respectively. The DFT optimized structure of complex 3 indicates that two zinc(II) ions are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Zn-Zn separation of 3.492(8)angstrom. UV-Vis and mass spectrometric analyses of the complexes confirm their dimeric nature in solution. Furthermore, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic investigations authenticate the integrity of complex 3 in solution. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper centers, with J = -26.0 cm(-1) and -23.9 cm(-1) ((H) over cap = -2JS(1)S(2)) in complexes 1 and 2, respectively. In addition, glycosidase-like activity of the complexes has been investigated in aqueous solution at pH similar to 10.5 by UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique using p-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (4) and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5) as model substrates. Coordination-driven self-assembly of dinuclear half-sandwich p-cymene ruthenium(II) complexes Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(CH3OH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](O3SCF3)(2) (1a) and Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C6H2O4)(CH3OH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](O3SCF3)(2) (1b) separately with imidazole-based tritopic donors (L-1-L-2) in methanol yielded a series of hexanuclear 3+2] trigonal prismatic cages (2-5), respectively L-1 = 1,3,5-tris(imidazole-1-yl) benzene; L-2 = 4,4',4 `'-tris(imidazole-1-yl) triphenylamine]. All the self-assembled cages 2-5 were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques (multinuclear NMR, Infra-red and ESI-MS) and their sizes, shapes were obtained through geometry optimization using molecular mechanics universal force field (MMUFF) computation. Despite the possibility due to the free rotation of donor sites of imidazole ligands, of two different atropoisomeric prismatic cages (C-3h or C-s) and polymeric product, the self-selection of single (C(3)h) conformational isomeric cages as the only product is a noteworthy observation. In this paper, the photochemical reduction process of Hg (II) in aqueous solution containing ferric iron and oxalate (Ox) has been studied. Under the radiation of a low-pressure mercury lamp (lambda = 253.7 nm, 8W), Fe(III)-oxalate complexes undergo photolysis to produce ferrous ions and other organic reductive species, which reduce Hg(II) subsequently. For 0.1 mg/L Hg (II), the photoreduction efficiency is comparatively higher in the solution at pH 5.0 than that over the range of 3.0 similar to 8.0. The photoreduction efficiency of Ho (II) in aqueous solution increases with increasing, initial concentration of ferric ions from 0.02 mmol/L to 0.2 mmol/L and initial concentration of oxalate from 0.96 mmol/L to 4.8 mmol/L and then gradually approaches to a steady state. CH3OH also contributes the reduction of Hg (II). We investigate the increase of the ferric, oxalate and CH3OH concentrations resulting from the increase of reduction efficiency of Hg (II). It can be seen that ferrous ions and other reactive species are reductants of Hg (II), and the reaction product with oxalate is mainly volatile metallic mercury.

RP-HPLC analysis for low molecular weight organic acids in soil solution has been optimized. An Atlantis (TM) C-18 column was used for the analyses. An optimal determination for eleven organic acids in soil solution was found at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 220 nm detection wavelength, with a mobile phase of 10 mM KH2PO4 -CH3OH (955, pH 2.7), a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min and 10 mu L sample size. The detection limits ranged 3.2-619 ng/mL, the coefficients of variation ranged 1.3-4.6%, and the recoveries ranged 95.6-106.3% for soil solution with standard addition on the optimal conditions proposed.

The reactions of (1) CH4 + MgO --> MgOH. + CH3. and (2) CH4 + MgO --> Mg + CH3OH have been studied on the singlet spin state potential energy surface at the MP2/6-311+G(2d,2p) level. These two reaction channels, both involving intermediates and transition states, have been rationalized by the structures of the species involved, natural bond orbital (NBO), and vibrational frequency analysis. We have considered two initial interacting models between CH4 and MgO: a collinear C-H approach to the O end of the MgO forming the MgOCH4 complex with C-3nu symmetry and three hydrogen atoms of the methane point to the Mg end of the MgO forming the OMgCH4 complex with C-1 symmetry. The calculations predict that reactions 1 and 2 are exothermic by 39.8 and 86.5 kJ mol(-1), respectively. Also, the former reaction proceeds more easily than the latter, and the complex HOMgCH3 is energetically preferred in the reaction of MgO + CH4.

Silica-supported molybdenum surface complexes were prepared by the reaction between (N=) Mo(OtBu)(3) and silica via displacement of the tert-butoxy ligands for siloxyls from the silica surface. The structure of the surface molybdenum complexes was well defined by in-situ FT-IR, elemental analysis, H-1 NMR and C-13 CP/MAS NMR techniques. The surface complexes could undergo alcoholysis reaction with CD3OD and CH3OH in the same way as free (N =) Mo(OtBu)(3) and they show high catalytic activity and selectivity in olefin epoxidation. Initial rates up to 24.9 mmol epoxide (mmol Mo)(-1) min(-1) were achieved in the epoxidation of cyclohexene using TBHP as oxidant.

The multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen-bonding cluster pyridazine-methanol (C4H4N2-CH3OH) was studied using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer at the wavelengths of 355 and 532 nm. At both wavelengths, a series of protonated C4H4N2-(CH3OH)(n)-H+ cluster ions were obtained. Relevant ab initio calculations were performed with HF and B3LYP methods. Equilibrium geometries of both neutral and ionic C4H4N2-CH3OH clusters, and dissociation channels and dissociation energies of ionic clusters, are presented. The results show that when C4H4N2-CH3OH is vertically ionized, C4H4N2H+ and CH3O are the dominant products via proton transfer reaction. A high energy barrier makes another channel corresponding to the production of C4H4N2H+ and CH2OH disfavored. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures, and luminescent and magnetic properties of four tetranuclear Tb-III (1 and 3) and Dy-III (2 and 4) complexes supported by p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene (H(4)PTC4A) and p-tert-butylthiacalix-[4]arene (H(4)TC4A). All four frameworks can be formulated as [Ln(4)(III)(PTC4A/TC4A)(2)(mu(4)-OH)Cl-3(CH3OH)(2)(H2O)(3)], and some methanol and water solvent molecules are occupied in the interstices. The compounds are featured with a sandwichlike unit constructed by two tail-to-tail calixarene molecules and a planar tetragonal (mu(4)-OH)Ln(4) cluster. The photoluminescent analyses suggest that there is an efficient ligand-to-Ln(III) energy transfer for compounds 1-3 and H(4)PTC4A is a more efficient "antenna" than H(4)TC4A.

Two new copper-thiacalix[4]arene compounds, [Cu-2(1)-Cl-2(H(4)TC4A)](CH3OH) (1) and [Cu(I)2Cl(2)(H(4)PTC4A)](CH3OH)(CHCl3)(0.5) (2) (where H(4)TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene and H(4)PTC4A = p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene), were synthesized by the solvothermal method in the mixed CH3OH/CHCl3 (1: 1) solvent and reassembled in air at room temperature to two other structures, [(Cu4Cl3)-Cl-II(HCO2)(TC4A)(CH3-OH)(2)(H2O)](CHCl3)(CH3OH)(2.7) (3) and [(Cu4Cl4)-Cl-II(PTC4A)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), respectively. All these four compounds were characterized by TG analyses, FTIR spectroscopy, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional layered networks, while compounds 3 and 4 are assembled by some tetranuclear units.

In this paper, we have reported a very simple strategy (combined sonication with sol-gel techniques) for synthesizing well-defined silica-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) coaxial nanocable without prior CNT functionalization. After functionalization with NH2 group, the CNT/silica coaxial nanocable has been employed as a three-dimensional support for loading ultra-high-density metal or hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) such as gold NPs, Au/Pt hybrid NPs, Pt hollow NPs, and Au/Ag core/shell NPs. Most importantly, it is found that the ultra-high-density Au/Pt NPs supported on coaxial nanocables (UASCN) could be used as enhanced materials for constructing electrochemical devices with high performance. Four model probe molecules (O-2, CH3OH, H2O2, and NH2NH2) have been investigated on UASCN-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). It was observed that the present UASCN exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward diverse molecules and was a promising electrocatalyst for constructing electrochemical devices with high performance. For instance, the detection limit for H2O2 with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 was found to be 0.3 mu M, which was lower than certain enzyme-based biosensors.

Two novel coordination polymers Ni-4(CH3O)(4)(CH3OH)(4)(dca)(4) (1) and Co-4(CH3O)(4)(CH3OH)(4)(dca)(4) (2) have been synthesized by solvethermal reaction. X-ray single-crystal analysis reveals that the two complexes are isostrutural and possess 3D frameworks that are built from the M4O4(M= Ni (1) and Co (2)) cubanelike building blocks linked by dicyanamide (dca) bridges. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was measured and the DC experiment data were fitted using the Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian.

Reactions of freshly prepared M(OH)(2-2x)(CO3)(x) (.) yH(2)O (M = Mn, Zn) and 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) with succinic acid (H2L) or famaric acid (H2L') in CH3OH-H2O afforded [Mn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L (.) 4H(2)O, 1, [Mn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L' (.) 4H(2)O, 2 and [Zn(H2O)(4)(bpy)]L (.) 4H(2)O, 3. The three coordination polymers are isostructural and consist of (1)(infinity)[M(H2O)(4)(bpy)(2/2)](2+) cationic chains, crystal H2O molecules and dicarboxylate anions (succinate or fumarate anions). Within the chains, the metal atoms are each octahedrally coordinated by four aqua oxygen atoms and two pyridyl nitrogen atoms from two 4,4'-bipyridine ligands. The crystal H2O molecules are hydrogen bonded to dicarboxylate anions to form ribbon-like anionic chains. The cationic and anionic chains are interconnected via hyqrogen bonds to generate a 3D network.
