This work presents results of studies of carbon-dispersed Pt-Rh (1:1) nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the ethanol electro-oxidation. The influences of the crystallite size and the cell temperature on the yields of CO2, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are investigated. Metal nanoparticles were prepared by two different routes: (1) impregnation on carbon powder followed by thermal reduction on hydrogen atmosphere and (2) chemical reduction of the precursor salts. The surface active area and the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts were estimated by CO stripping and cyclic voltammetry in the absence and in the presence of ethanol, respectively. Reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The electrochemical stripping of CO and the electrochemical ethanol oxidation were slightly faster on the Pt-Rh electrocatalysts compared to Pt/C. Also, in situ FTIR spectra and DEMS measurements evidenced that the CO2/acetaldehyde and the CO2/acetic acid ratios are higher for the Pt-Rh/C materials in relation to Pt/C. This was ascribed to the activation of the C-C bond breaking by Rh, this being more prominent for the materials with smaller crystallite sizes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Statement of problem. Different combinations of Co-Cr alloys bonded to ceramic have been used in dentistry; however, the bond strength of ceramic to metal can vary because of different compositions of these alloys.Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of a dental ceramic to 5 commercially available Co-Cr alloys.Material and methods. Five Co-Cr alloys (IPS d.SIGN 20, IPS d.SIGN 30, Remanium 2000, Heranium P, and Wirobond C) were tested and compared to a control group of an Au-Pd alloy (Olympia). Specimen disks, 5 mm high and 4 mm in diameter, were fabricated with the lost-wax technique. Sixty specimens were prepared using opaque and dentin ceramics (VITA Omega 900), veneered, 4 mm high and 4 mm in diameter, over the metal specimens (n = 10). The shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. After shear bond testing, fracture surfaces were evaluated in a stereomicroscope under x25 magnification. Ultimate shear bond strength (MPa) data were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (alpha = .05).Results. The mean (SID) bond strengths (MPa) were: 61.4 (7.8) for Olympia; 94.0 (18.9) for IPS 20; 96.8 (10.2) for I PS 30; 75.1 (12.4) for Remanium; 71.2 (14.3) for Heranium P; and 63.2 (10.9) for Wirobond C. Mean bond strengths for IPS 20 and IPS 30 were not significantly different, but were significantly (P<.001) higher than mean bond strengths for the other 4 alloys, which were not significantly different from each other.Conclusions. Bond strength of a dental ceramic to a Co-Cr alloy is dependent on the alloy composition.

The interaction of formamide and the two transition states of its amide group rotation with one, two, or three water molecules was studied in vacuum. Great differences between the electronic structure of formamide in its most stable form and the electronic structure of the transition states were noticed. Intermolecular interactions were intense, especially in the cases where the solvent interacted with the amide and the carbonyl groups simultaneously. In the transition states, the interaction between the lone pair of nitrogen and the water molecule becomes important. With the aid of the natural bond orbitals, natural resonance theory, and electron localization function (ELF) analyses an increase in the resonance of planar formamide with the addition of successive water molecules was observed. Such observation suggests that the hydrogen bonds in the formamidewater complexes may have some covalent character. These results are also supported by the quantitative ELF analyses. Polymers with mid-chain alkoxyamine functionality were synthesized by activating monohalogenated polymers in the presence of nitroso or nitrone radical traps. The resulting polymers were either polystyrene (PSt) homopolymers with a mid-chain alkoxyamine or PSt-poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) diblock copolymers with an alkoxyamine unit at the junction between the segments. Monohalogenated polymers where synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and were then reacted to form polymer radicals in the presence of a radical trap, nitrone or nitroso. When only polystyrene radicals were reacted with the radical trap a dimer was formed with an alkoxyamine functionality in the center of the polymer chain. This functionality allowed the polymer chain to be cleaved in order to visualize the extent of the alkoxyamine functionality incorporation into the polymer chains. It was found that near quantitative alkoxyamine mid-chain functionality could be achieved by activating the PStBr in the presence of 10 equivalents of nitrone, 5 equivalents of copper bromide, and 2 equivalents of copper metal. Further reducing the amount of copper metal led to incomplete coupling, while increasing the equivalents beyond 2 generated polymer dimers with less than quantitative mid-chain functionality. Monochlorinated polystyrene (PStCl) precursors gave much poorer coupling results compared to reactions with PStBr, which is consistent with the stronger C-Cl bond resisting activation and the formation of the polystyryl radicals. When poly (methyl acrylate) (PMABr) is reacted with PStBr in the presence of a nitroso group at reduced temperatures (30 oC) block copolymers were selectively formed with an alkoxyamine functionality in the center. This was done by first activating the PSt-Br to form a polymer radical that would react with the radical trap to form a persistent radical on the oxygen. The PMA-Br, once activated, reacted with the radical on the oxygen to form the block copolymer. To test the amount of functionality incorporated, a coupling reaction was performed with no nitroso present, and found that no reaction occurred. This showed that the radical trap is essential for the coupling to occur, and cleavage of the diblock indicated that the alkoxyamine functionality was indeed incorporated into the diblock.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this in vitro study were (1) to assess the bond strength of the universal cement RelyX Unicem to dentin and to compare it with three conventional resin cements, (2) to test the influence of aging on their bonding capacity and (3) to test the influence of the operator on bonding quality by performing the same test in two different centers. METHODS: 160 third molars, divided into 80 for tests at the University of Zurich (Z) and 80 for tests at the University of Berne (B), were assigned to 2 x 8 subgroups of 10 teeth each. The specimens were prepared with the corresponding bonding agents and acrylic rods were luted either with RelyX Unicem (U), RelyX ARC (A), Multilink (M) or Panavia 21 (P). All specimens were stored in water for 24h (W) and half of the specimens were subjected to 1500 cycles of thermocycling (5 degrees C and 55 degrees C) (T). Bond strength was measured by means of a shear test. RESULTS: After water storage RelyX Unicem exhibited lowest bond strength (UWZ: 9.2+/-1.6 MPa, UWB: 9.9+/-1.2 MPa, AWZ: 15.3+/-6.0 MPa, AWB: 12.2+/-4.3 MPa, MWZ: 15.6+/-3.3 MPa, MWB: 12.4 MPa+/-2.4, PWZ: 13.4+/-2.9 MPa, PWB: 14.9+/-2.6 MPa). Thermocycling affected the bonding performance of all four cements. However, bond strength of RelyX Unicem was least influenced by thermocycling (UTZ: 9.4+/-2.9 MPa, UTB: 8.6+/-1.3 MPa, ATZ: 11.4+/-6.3 MPa, ATB: 13.3+/-3.7 MPa, MTZ: 15.4+/-3.1 MPa, MTB: 10.3+/-2.4 MPa, PTZ: 11.1+/-2.8 MPa, PTB: 11.3+/-2.8 MPa). SIGNIFICANCE: Although the bond strength of RelyX Unicem to dentin was lower in comparison to RelyX ARC, Multilink and Panavia 21, its bond strength was less sensitive to variations in handling and aging.

Secretion of inflammatory mediators by rat mast cells (line RBL-2H3) was earlier shown to be inhibited upon clustering a membrane glycoprotein by monoclonal antibody G63. This glycoprotein, named mast cell function-associated antigen (MAFA), was also shown to interfere with the coupling cascade of the type 1 Fc epsilon receptor upstream to phospholipase C gamma 1 activation by protein-tyrosine kinases. Here we report that the MAFA is expressed as both a monomer and a homodimer. Expression cloning of its cDNA shows that it contains a single open reading frame, encoding a 188-amino acid-long type II integral membrane protein. The 114 C-terminal amino acids display sequence homology with the carbohydrate-binding domain of calcium-dependent animal lectins, many of which have immunological functions. The cytoplasmic tail of MAFA contains a YXXL (YSTL) motif, which is conserved among related C-type lectins and is an essential element in the immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs. Finally, changes in the MAFA tyrosyl- and seryl-phosphorylation levels are observed in response to monoclonal antibody G63 binding, antigenic stimulation, and a combination of both treatments.

On the basis of HF/6-31G(d) optimized structures, the nonplanar distortions of 135 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been classified as splitting (S-) and arching (A-) distortions. Three bay structures are proposed as the structural origin of S-distortion. Due to the limitation of sample molecules, a set of universal motifs for molecules containing A-distortions is not available; however, a set of motifs and parameters are developed for the semiquantitative estimation of the nonplanar strain energies of PAHs containing the corannulene structure, and the differences between the E, values from quantum calculations and those from these estimations vary from -5.60 to 5.51 kcal/mol. The above results are fundamentally important for the understanding of nonplanar distortion of PAHs and fullerenes, and this method can also be employed to semiquantitatively estimate strain energies of such molecules containing hundreds of carbon atoms.

Phosphonoformate and phosphonoacetate are effective antiviral agents, however they are charged at physiological pH and as such penetration into cells and diffusion across the blood-brain bamer is limited. In an attempt to increase the lipophilicity and improve the transport properties of these molecules, prodrugs were synthesised and their stabilities and reconversion to the parent compound subsequently investigated by the techniques of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high performance liquid Chromatography. A series of 4-substituted dibenzyl (methoxycarbonyl)phosphonates were prepared and found to be hydrolytically unstable giving predominantly the diesters, benzyl (methoxycarbonyl)phosphonates. This instability arose from the electron-withdrawing effect of the carbonyl group promoting nucleophilic attack at phosphorus. It was possible to influence the mechanism and, to some extent, the rate of hydrolysis of the phosphonoformate triesters to the diesters by varying the electronic nature of the substituent in the 4-position of the aromatic ring. Strongly electron-withdrawing groups increased the sensitivity of phosphorus to nucleophilic attack, thus promoting P-O .bond cleavage and rapid hydrolysis. Conversely, weakly electron-withdrawing substituents encouraged C-O bond fission, presumably through resonance stabilisation of the benzyl carbonium ion. The loss of the protecting group on phosphorus was in competition with nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl group, resulting in P-C bond cleavage with dibenzyl phosphite formation. The high instability and P-C bond fission make triesters unsuitable prodrug forms of phosphonoformate. A range of chemically stable triesters of phosphonoacetate were synthesised and their bioactivation investigated. Di(benzoyloxymethyl) (methoxycarbonylmethyl)phosphonates degraded to the relevant benzoyloxymethyl (methoxycarbonylmethyl)phosphonate in the presence of esterase. The enzymatic activation was restricted to the removal of only one protecting group from phosphorus, most likely due to the close proximity of the benzoyloxy ester function to the anionic charge on the diester. However, in similar systems di(4-alkanoyloxybenzyl) (methoxycarbonylmethyl)phosphonates degraded in the presence of esterase with the loss of both protecting groups on phosphorus to give the monoester, (methoxycarbonylmethyl)phosphonate, via the intermediary of the unstable 4-hydroxy benzyl esters. The methoxycarbonyl function remained intact. The rate of enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent removal of the protecting groups on phosphorus was dependent on the nature of the alkanoyl group and was most rapid for the 4-nbutanoyloxybenzyl and 4-iso-butanoyloxybenzyl esters of phosphonoacetate. This provides a strategy for the design of a prodrug with sufficient stability in plasma to reach the central nervous system in high concentration, wherein rapid metabolism to the active drug by brain-associated enzymes occurs.

A series of sulfated alumina catalysts were synthesised by wet impregnation with sulfate-containing solutions. The degree of surface sulfation and corresponding surface acidity could be readily tuned by varying the molarity of impregnating solution. Strong acid treatments (>0.1 M) induced aluminium-sulfate crystallisation with a concomitant decrease in porosity and surface acidity. Platinum-doped sulfated aluminas showed enhanced activity towards methane, ethane and propane combustion. Activity scaled with the degree of accessible surface sulfate and platinum loading, however C-H bond scission appeared rate-limiting over both pure and presulfated aluminas. The magnitude of sulfate-promoted propane oxidation was greatest under heavily oxidising conditions (C3H6∶O2 > 1:20) but independent of Pt loading, confirming that support-mediated alkane activation is the dominant factor in the promotional mechanism.

Dissociation of molecular hydrogen is an important step in a wide variety of chemical, biological, and physical processes. Due to the light mass of hydrogen, it is recognized that quantum effects are often important to its reactivity. However, understanding how quantum effects impact the reactivity of hydrogen is still in its infancy. Here, we examine this issue using a well-defined Pd/Cu(111) alloy that allows the activation of hydrogen and deuterium molecules to be examined at individual Pd atom surface sites over a wide range of temperatures. Experiments comparing the uptake of hydrogen and deuterium as a function of temperature reveal completely different behavior of the two species. The rate of hydrogen activation increases at lower sample temperature, whereas deuterium activation slows as the temperature is lowered. Density functional theory simulations in which quantum nuclear effects are accounted for reveal that tunneling through the dissociation barrier is prevalent for H2 up to ∼190 K and for D2 up to ∼140 K. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the effective barrier to H2 dissociation is so low that hydrogen uptake on the surface is limited merely by thermodynamics, whereas the D2 dissociation process is controlled by kinetics. These data illustrate the complexity and inherent quantum nature of this ubiquitous and seemingly simple chemical process. Examining these effects in other systems with a similar range of approaches may uncover temperature regimes where quantum effects can be harnessed, yielding greater control of bond-breaking processes at surfaces and uncovering useful chemistries such as selective bond activation or isotope separation.

Gasoline oxygenates (MTBE, methyl tert-butyl ether; DIPE, di-isopropyl ether; ETBE, ethyl tert-butyl ether; TAME, tert-amyl ether) are added to gasoline to boost octane and enhance combustion. The combination of large scale use, high water solubility and only minor biodegradability has now resulted in a significant gasoline oxygenate contamination occurring in surface, ground, and drinking water systems. Combination of hydroxyl radical formation and the pyrolytic environment generated by ultrasonic irradiation (665 kHz) leads to the rapid degradation of MTBE and other gasoline oxygenates in aqueous media. ^ The presence of oxygen promotes the degradation processes by rapid reaction with carbon centered radicals indicating radical processes involving O 2 are significant pathways. A number of the oxidation products were identified. The formation of products (alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, esters, peroxides, etc) could be rationalized by mechanisms which involve hydrogen abstraction by OH radical and/or pyrolysis to form carboncentered radicals which react with oxygen and follow standard oxidation chain processes. ^ The reactions of N-substituted R-triazolinediones (RTAD; R = CH 3 or phenyl) have attracted considerable interest because they exhibit a number of unusual mechanistic characteristics that are analogous to the reactions of singlet oxygen (1O2) and offer an easy way to provide C-N bond(s) formation. The reactions of triazolinedione with olefins have been widely studied and aziridinium imides are generally accepted to be the reactive intermediates. ^ We observed the rapid formation of an unusual intermediate upon mixing tetracyclopropylethylene with 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione in CDCl 3. Detailed characterization by NMR (proton, 13C, 2-D NMRs) indicates the intermediate is 5,5,6,6-tetracyclopropyl-3-methyl-5,6-dihydro-oxazolo[3,2- b][1,2,4]-triazolium-2-olate. Such products are extremely rare and have not been studied. Upon warming the intermediate is converted to 2 + 2 diazetidine (major) and ene product (minor). ^ To further explore the kinetics and dynamics of the reaction activation energies were obtained using Arrhenius plots. Activation energies for the formation of the intermediate from reactants, and 2+2 adduct from the intermediate were determined as 7.48 kcal moll and 19.8 kcal mol−1 with their pre-exponential values of 2.24 × 105 dm 3 mol−1 sec−1 and 2.75 × 108 sec−1, respectively, meaning net slow reactions because of low pre-exponential values caused by steric hindrance. ^
