Thermoelectric generators (TEG) are solid state devices and are able to convert thermal energy directly into electricity and thus could play an important role in waste heat recovery in the near future. Half-Heusler (HH) compounds with the general formula MNiSn (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) built a promising class of materials for these applications because of their high Seebeck coefficients, their environmentally friendliness and their cost advantage over conventional thermoelectric materials.rnrnMuch of the existing literature on HH deals with thermoelectric characterization of n-type MNiSn and p-type MCoSb compounds. Studies on p-type MNiSn-based HHs are far fewer in number. To fabricate high efficient thermoelectric modules based on HH compounds, high performance p-type MNiSn systems need to be developed that are compatible with the existing n-type HH compounds. This thesis explores synthesis strategies for p-type MNiSn based compounds. In particular, the efficacy of transition metals (Sc, La) and main group elements (Al, Ga, In) as acceptor dopants on the Sn-site in ZrNiSn, was investigated by evaluating their thermoelectric performance. The most promising p-type materials could be achieved with transition metal dopants, where the introduction of Sc on the Zr side, yielded the highest Seebeck coefficient in a ternary NiSn-based HH compound up to this date. Hall effect and band gap measurements of this system showed, that the high mobility of minority carrier electrons dominate the transport properties at temperatures above 500 K. It could be shown that this is the reason, why n-type HH are successful TE materials for high temperature applications, and that p-types are subjected to bipolar effects which will lead to diminished thermoelectric efficiencies at high temperatures.rnrnTo complement the experimental investigations on different metal dopants and their influence on the TE properties of HH compounds, numerical solutions to the Boltzmann transport equation were used to predict the optimum carrier concentration where the maximum TE efficiency occurs for p-type HH compounds. The results for p-type samples showed that can not be treated within a simple parabolic band model approach, due to bipolar and multi-band effects.rnrnThe parabolic band model is commonly used for bulk TE materials. It is most accurate when the transport properties are dominated by one single carrier type. Since the transport properties of n-type HH are dominated by only one carrier type (high mobility electrons), it could be shown, that the use of a simple parabolic band model lead to a successful prediction of the optimized carrier concentration and thermoelectric efficiency in n-type HH compounds. rn

Tungsten (W) and tungsten-based alloys are considered to be the best candidate materials for fabricating the divertor in the next-generation nuclear fusion reactors. This component will experience the highest thermal loads during the operation of a reactor since it directly faces the plasma. In recent years, after thorough analysis that followed a strategy of cost reduction, the ITER Organization decided to built a full-tunsgten divertor before the first nuclear campaigns. Therefore, tungsten will be used not only as a plasma-facing material (PFM) but also in structural applications. Tungsten, due to its the excellent thermo-physical properties fulfils the requirements of a PFM, however, its use in structural applications is compromised due to its inherent brittleness. One of the objectives of this phD thesis is therefore, to find a material with improved brittleness behaviour. The microstructural and mechanical characterisation of different tunsgten-based materials was performed. However, this is a challenging task because of the reduced laboratory-scale size of the specimens provided, their _ne microstructure and their brittleness. Consequently, many techniques are required to ensure an accurate measurement of all the mechanical and physical properties. Some of the applied methods have been widely used such as nanoindentation or three-point bending (TPB) tests. However, other methods were specifically developed and implemented during this work such as the measurement of the real fracture toughness of bulk-tunsgten alloys or the in situ fracture toughness measurements of very thin tungsten foils. Bulk-tunsgten materials with different compositions (W-1% Y2O3, W-2% V- 0.5% Y2O3, W-4% V-0.5% Y2O3, W-2% Ti-1% La2O3 and W-4% Ti-1% La2O3) were studied and compared with pure tungsten processed under the same conditions. These alloys, produced by a powder metallurgical route of mechanical alloying (MA) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP), were microstructural and mechanically characterised from 77 to 1473 K in air and under high vacuum conditions. Hardness, elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness for all of the alloys were measured in addition to other physical and mechanical properties. Finally, the fracture surfaces after the TPB tests were analysed to correlate the micromechanisms of failure with the macroscopic behaviour. The results reveal brittle mechanical behaviour in almost the entire temperature range for the alloys and micromechanisms of failure with no improvement in the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). To continue the search of a tungsten material with lowered DBTT, a preliminary study of pure tunsgten and 0.005 wt.% potassium (K)-doped tungsten foils was also performed. These foils were industrially produced by sintering and hot and cold rolling. After that, they were annealed from 1073 to 2673 K to analyse the evolution of the microstructural and mechanical properties with increasing annealing temperature. The results revealed the stabilisation of the tungsten grains with increasing annealing temperature in the potassium-doped tungsten foil. However, additional studies need to be performed to gain a better understanding of the microstructure and mechanical properties of these materials such as fracture toughness.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a succinct but nevertheless complete mechanistic overview of the various types of magnesium corrosion. The understanding of the corrosion processes of magnesium alloys builds upon our understanding of the corrosion of pure magnesium. This provides an understanding of the types of corrosion exhibited by,magnesium alloys, and also of the environmental factors Of most importance. This deep understanding is required as a foundation if we are to produce magnesium alloys much more resistant to corrosion than the present alloys. Much has already been achieved, but there is vast scope for improvement. This present analysis can provide a foundation and a theoretical framework for further, much needed research. There is still vast scope both for better fundamental understanding of corrosion processes, engineering usage of magnesium, and also on the corrosion protection of magnesium alloys in service.

We present a new version of non-local density functional theory (NL-DFT) adapted to description of vapor adsorption isotherms on amorphous materials like non-porous silica. The novel feature of this approach is that it accounts for the roughness of adsorbent surface. The solid–fluid interaction is described in the same framework as in the case of fluid–fluid interactions, using the Weeks–Chandler–Andersen (WCA) scheme and the Carnahan–Starling (CS) equation for attractive and repulsive parts of the Helmholtz free energy, respectively. Application to nitrogen and argon adsorption isotherms on non-porous silica LiChrospher Si-1000 at their boiling points, recently published by Jaroniec and co-workers, has shown an excellent correlative ability of our approach over the complete range of pressures, which suggests that the surface roughness is mostly the reason for the observed behavior of adsorption isotherms. From the analysis of these data, we found that in the case of nitrogen adsorption short-range interactions between oxygen atoms on the silica surface and quadrupole of nitrogen molecules play an important role. The approach presented in this paper may be further used in quantitative analysis of adsorption and desorption isotherms in cylindrical pores such as MCM-41 and carbon nanotubes.

Sol-gel-synthesized bioactive glasses may be formed via a hydrolysis condensation reaction, silica being introduced in the form of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and calcium is typically added in the form of calcium nitrate. The synthesis reaction proceeds in an aqueous environment; the resultant gel is dried, before stabilization by heat treatment. These materials, being amorphous, are complex at the level of their atomic-scale structure, but their bulk properties may only be properly understood on the basis of that structural insight. Thus, a full understanding of their structure-property relationship may only be achieved through the application of a coherent suite of leading-edge experimental probes, coupled with the cogent use of advanced computer simulation methods. Using as an exemplar a calcia-silica sol-gel glass of the kind developed by Larry Hench, in the memory of whom this paper is dedicated, we illustrate the successful use of high-energy X-ray and neutron scattering (diffraction) methods, magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR, and molecular dynamics simulation as components to a powerful methodology for the study of amorphous materials.

In this paper, we report the preparation and characterisation of nanometer-sized TiO2, CdO, and ZnO semiconductor particles trapped in zeolite NaY. Preparation of these particles was carried out via the traditional ion exchange method and subsequent calcination procedure. It was found that the smaller cations, i.e., Cd2+ and Zn2+ could be readily introduced into the SI′ and SII′ sites located in the sodalite cages, through ion exchange; while this is not the case for the larger Ti species, i.e., Ti monomer [TiO]2+ or dimer [Ti2O3]2+ which were predominantly dispersed on the external surface of zeolite NaY. The subsequent calcination procedure promoted these Ti species to migrate into the internal surface of the supercages. These semiconductor particles confined in NaY zeolite host exhibited a significant blue shift in the UV-VIS absorption spectra, in contrast to the respective bulk semiconductor materials, due to the quantum size effect (QSE). The particle sizes calculated from the UV-VIS optical absorption spectra using the effective mass approximation model are in good agreement with the atomic absorption data.

An attractive microstructural possibility for enhancing the ductility of high-strength nanocrystals is to develop a bimodal grain-size distribution, in which the fine grains provide strength, and the coarser grains enable strain hardening. Annealing of nanocrystalline Ni over a range of temperatures and times led to microstructures with varying volume fractions of coarse grains and a change in texture. Tensile tests revealed a drastic reduction in ductility with increasing volume fraction of coarse grains. The reduction in ductility may be related to the segregation of sulphur to grain boundaries.

In this work, we synthesized bulk amorphous GeGaS glass by conventional melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of the glass is confirmed using X-ray diffraction. We fabricated the channel waveguides on this glass using the ultrafast laser inscription technique. The waveguides are written on this glass 100 mu m below the surface of the glass with a separation of 50 ae m by focusing the laser beam into the material using 0.67 NA lens. The laser parameters are set to 350 fs pulse duration at 100 KHz repetition rate. A range of writing energies with translation speeds 1 mm/s, 2 mm/s, 3 mm/s and 4 mm/s were investigated. After fabrication the waveguides facets were ground and polished to the optical quality to remove any tapering of the waveguide close to the edges. We characterized the loss measurement by butt coupling method and the mode field image of the waveguides has been captured to compare with the mode field image of fibers. Also we compared the asymmetry in the shape of the waveguide and its photo structural change using Raman spectra.

The optical loss coefficient at 1053-nm wavelength, influenced by Fe ions in N31-type Nd-doped phosphate laser glass, was determined precisely and analyzed in detail. It is found that the optical loss coefficient per unit of Fe concentration (cm^(-1)/ppmw) increases with Fe concentration in the range of 0---300 ppmw, but it approaches a constant as the Fe concentration is larger than 300 ppmw. Such a concentration effect is due to a shift in the redox equilibrium between Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions in the glass. The effect of oxygen pressure, temperature, and variable valence states of other metal ions in glass samples on the optical loss is also discussed.

The thermal stability, Raman spectrum and upconversion properties of Tm^(3+)/Yb^(3+) co-doped new oxyfluoride tellurite glass are investigated. The results show that Tm^(3+)/Yb^(3+) co-doped oxyfluoride tellurite glass possesses good thermal stability, lower phonon energy, and intense upconversion blue luminescence. Under 980-nm laser diode (LD) excitation, the intense blue (475 nm) emission and weak red (649 nm) emission corresponding to the 1G4 -> 3H6 and 1G4 -> 3F4 transitions of Tm^(3+) ions respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The possible upconversion mechanisms are evaluated. The intense blue upconversion luminescence of Tm^(3+)/Yb^(3+) co-doped oxyfluoride tellurite glass can be used as potential host material for the development of blue upconversion optical devices.

Because of the influence of OH groups in phosphate glasses on the radiation of rare-earth ions, the laser performance is degraded. The laser efficiency and the small signal gain experiment of several phosphate glass samples have been done, the concentration of OH groups in glasses was calculated from the measured absorption coefficient at 3.47 μm. It is shown that the concentration of OH groups in phosphate glasses can seriously influence the laser output characteristics, and the OH groups have worse influence on the laser amplifier than laser oscillator.
