Aiming at the large scale numerical simulation of particle reinforced materials, the concept of local Eshelby matrix has been introduced into the computational model of the eigenstrain boundary integral equation (BIE) to solve the problem of interactions among particles. The local Eshelby matrix can be considered as an extension of the concepts of Eshelby tensor and the equivalent inclusion in numerical form. Taking the subdomain boundary element method as the control, three-dimensional stress analyses are carried out for some ellipsoidal particles in full space with the proposed computational model. Through the numerical examples, it is verified not only the correctness and feasibility but also the high efficiency of the present model with the corresponding solution procedure, showing the potential of solving the problem of large scale numerical simulation of particle reinforced materials.

This thesis presents a promising boundary setting method for solving challenging issues in text classification to produce an effective text classifier. A classifier must identify boundary between classes optimally. However, after the features are selected, the boundary is still unclear with regard to mixed positive and negative documents. A classifier combination method to boost effectiveness of the classification model is also presented. The experiments carried out in the study demonstrate that the proposed classifier is promising.

This work presents detailed numerical calculations of the dielectrophoretic force in octupolar traps designed for single-cell trapping. A trap with eight planar electrodes is studied for spherical and ellipsoidal particles using an indirect implementation of the boundary element method (BEM). Multipolar approximations of orders one to three are compared with the full Maxwell stress tensor (MST) calculation of the electrical force on spherical particles. Ellipsoidal particles are also studied, but in their case only the dipolar approximation is available for comparison with the MST solution. The results show that the full MST calculation is only required in the study of non-spherical particles.

We consider the problem of scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic incident plane wave by a sound soft convex polygon. For standard boundary or finite element methods, with a piecewise polynomial approximation space, the computational cost required to achieve a prescribed level of accuracy grows linearly with respect to the frequency of the incident wave. Recently Chandler–Wilde and Langdon proposed a novel Galerkin boundary element method for this problem for which, by incorporating the products of plane wave basis functions with piecewise polynomials supported on a graded mesh into the approximation space, they were able to demonstrate that the number of degrees of freedom required to achieve a prescribed level of accuracy grows only logarithmically with respect to the frequency. Here we propose a related collocation method, using the same approximation space, for which we demonstrate via numerical experiments a convergence rate identical to that achieved with the Galerkin scheme, but with a substantially reduced computational cost.

The goal of this work is the efficient solution of the heat equation with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions using the Boundary Elements Method (BEM). Efficiently solving the heat equation is useful, as it is a simple model problem for other types of parabolic problems. In complicated spatial domains as often found in engineering, BEM can be beneficial since only the boundary of the domain has to be discretised. This makes BEM easier than domain methods such as finite elements and finite differences, conventionally combined with time-stepping schemes to solve this problem. The contribution of this work is to further decrease the complexity of solving the heat equation, leading both to speed gains (in CPU time) as well as requiring smaller amounts of memory to solve the same problem. To do this we will combine the complexity gains of boundary reduction by integral equation formulations with a discretisation using wavelet bases. This reduces the total work to O(h

In this work, a numerical model to perform non-linear analysis of building floor structures is proposed. The presented model is derived from the Kirchhoff-s plate bending formulation of the boundary element method (BENI) for zoned domains, in which the plate stiffness is modified by the presence of membrane effects. In this model, no approximation of the generalized forces along the interface is required and the compatibility and equilibrium conditions along interfaces are imposed at the integral equation level. In order to reduce the number of degrees of freedom, the Navier Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to simplify the strain field for the thin sub-regions (rectangular beams). The non-linear formulation is obtained from the linear formulation by incorporating initial internal force fields, which are approximated by using the well-known cell sub-division. Then, the non-linear solution of algebraic equations is obtained by using the concept of the consistent tangent operator. The Von Mises criterion is adopted to govern the elasto-plastic material behaviour checked at points along the plate thickness and along the rectangular beam element axes. The numerical representations are accurately obtained by either computing analytically the element integrals or performing the numerical integration accurately using an appropriate sub-elementation scheme. This work presents an application of a Boundary Element Method (BEM) formulation for anisotropic body analysis using isotropic fundamental solution. The anisotropy is considered by expressing a residual elastic tensor as the difference of the anisotropic and isotropic elastic tensors. Internal variables and cell discretization of the domain are considered. Masonry is a composite material consisting of bricks (masonry units), mortar and the bond between them and it is necessary to take account of anisotropy in this type of structure. The paper presents the formulation, the elastic tensor of the anisotropic medium properties and the algebraic procedure. Two examples are shown to validate the formulation and good agreement was obtained when comparing analytical and numerical results. Two further examples in which masonry walls were simulated, are used to demonstrate that the presented formulation shows close agreement between BE numerical results and different Finite Element (FE) models. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

In this work, a non-linear Boundary Element Method (BEM) formulation with damage model is extended for numerical simulation of structural masonry walls in 2D stress analysis. The formulation is reoriented to analyse structural masonry, the component materials of which, clay bricks and mortar, are considered as damaged materials. Also considered are the internal variables and cell discretization of the domain. A damage model is used to represent the material behaviour and the domain discretization is also proposed and discussed. The paper presents the numerical parameters of the damage model for the material properties of the masonry components, clay bricks and mortar. Some examples are shown to validate the formulation.

This paper addresses the numerical solution of random crack propagation problems using the coupling boundary element method (BEM) and reliability algorithms. Crack propagation phenomenon is efficiently modelled using BEM, due to its mesh reduction features. The BEM model is based on the dual BEM formulation, in which singular and hyper-singular integral equations are adopted to construct the system of algebraic equations. Two reliability algorithms are coupled with BEM model. The first is the well known response surface method, in which local, adaptive polynomial approximations of the mechanical response are constructed in search of the design point. Different experiment designs and adaptive schemes are considered. The alternative approach direct coupling, in which the limit state function remains implicit and its gradients are calculated directly from the numerical mechanical response, is also considered. The performance of both coupling methods is compared in application to some crack propagation problems. The investigation shows that direct coupling scheme converged for all problems studied, irrespective of the problem nonlinearity. The computational cost of direct coupling has shown to be a fraction of the cost of response surface solutions, regardless of experiment design or adaptive scheme considered. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is a discretisation technique for solving partial differential equations, which offers, for certain problems, important advantages over domain techniques. Despite the high CPU time reduction that can be achieved, some 3D problems remain today untreatable because the extremely large number of degrees of freedom—dof—involved in the boundary description. Model reduction seems to be an appealing choice for both, accurate and efficient numerical simulations. However, in the BEM the reduction in the number of degrees of freedom does not imply a significant reduction in the CPU time, because in this technique the more important part of the computing time is spent in the construction of the discrete system of equations. In this way, a reduction also in the number of weighting functions, seems to be a key point to render efficient boundary element simulations.

It is well known that the evaluation of the influence matrices in the boundary-element method requires the computation of singular integrals. Quadrature formulae exist which are especially tailored to the specific nature of the singularity, i.e. log(*- x0)9 Ijx- JC0), etc. Clearly the nodes and weights of these formulae vary with the location Xo of the singular point. A drawback of this approach is that a given problem usually includes different types of singularities, and therefore a general-purpose code would have to include many alternative formulae to cater for all possible cases. Recently, several authors1"3 have suggested a type independent alternative technique based on the combination of standard Gaussian rules with non-linear co-ordinate transformations. The transformation approach is particularly appealing in connection with the p.adaptive version, where the location of the collocation points varies at each step of the refinement process. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the technique in eference 3. We show that this technique is asymptotically correct as the number of Gauss points increases. However, the method possesses a 'hidden' source of error that is analysed and can easily be removed.

The numerical strategies employed in the evaluation of singular integrals existing in the Cauchy principal value (CPV) sense are, undoubtedly, one of the key aspects which remarkably affect the performance and accuracy of the boundary element method (BEM). Thus, a new procedure, based upon a bi-cubic co-ordinate transformation and oriented towards the numerical evaluation of both the CPV integrals and some others which contain different types of singularity is developed. Both the ideas and some details involved in the proposed formulae are presented, obtaining rather simple and-attractive expressions for the numerical quadrature which are also easily embodied into existing BEM codes. Some illustrative examples which assess the stability and accuracy of the new formulae are included.

This paper presents the implementation of an adaptive philosophy to plane potential problems, using the direct boundary element method. After some considerations about the state of the art and a discussion of the standard approach features, the possibility of separately treating the modelling of variables and their interpolation through hierarchical shape functions is analysed. Then the proposed indicators and estimators are given, followed by a description of a small computer program written for an IBM PC. Finally, some examples show the kind of results to be expected.
