A study of the distribution of some chemical constituents in the musculature of Channa punctatus Bloch showed it to be fairly heterogeneous. The increase in the levels of protein, fat, ash, total carbohydrates, glycogen, RNA, DNA and cholesterol towards the posterior region of the fillet was the result of increase in the number of cells per unit weight of the sample and in the concentration of myocommata. The distribution of water in the musculature was inversely related to that of the fat. The concentration of protein appeared to be associated with the RNA level. The posterior region of the fillet exhibited more calorific value than the anterior region.

Blue discolouration met with in the canned body meat of crab (Scylla serrata) was due to copper content exceeding 1.8 to 2.0 mg/100g on dry weight basis. Bleeding the cleaned carcasses of crab thoroughly in running water brought down the copper content below this level and blue discolouration prevented. Addition of copper ions to the thoroughly bled crab meat to raise the copper content above this level caused discolouration. The incidence of blue discolouration was independent of the freshness of the animals used. Citric acid in high concentration prevented blueing to some extent, but is not advisable as texture and flavour were adversely affected.

The present study was carried out in order to establish an economical effective diet for the pacific white shrimp in the southern part conditions of Iran. With the consideration of three dietary energy levels (E1=262, E2=312, E3=362 kcal 100 g-1 diet) and six ratios of fish meal (FM) to soybean meal (SBM) [(P1=100%FM+0%SBM, P2=80%FM+20%SBM, P3=60%FM+40%SBM, P4=40%FM+60%SBM, P5=20%FM+80%SBM, P6=0%FM+100%SBM)], 18 experimental diets (with 36% crude protein) were prepared. Completely randomized design was used to assign 54 polyethylene 300 litre round tanks provided by aeration and flow through water system and was stocked by 19 juvenile as 3 replicates to each treatment. Shrimps average weight was about 0.77 grams at the start. After 56 days culture period, maximum growth and nutritional performances were observed in the P6E1 treatment (containing 100% soybean meal and 262 kcal 100 g-1 diet) and P5E1 treatment (containing 80% soybean meal and 262 kcal 100 g-1 diet). Also the highest survival rate of the shrimps was observed in the P1E1, P1E2, P3E3 and P5E3 treatments. Additionally interactive effect of different protein ratios and energy levels had significant difference on body protein, fat, fiber and ash contents (P<0.05). Results of the present study suggest the possibility replacement of at least 80% of dietary fish meal by soybean meal in the diet of pacific white shrimp in the conditions of southern part of Iran.

An 8-week growth trial was carried out in a semi-recirculation system to investigate the effect of high dietary starch levels on the growth performance, blood chemistry, starch utilization and body composition of gibel carp (Carassius auratus var. gibelio). Five isonitrogenous and isocarloric experimental diets were formulated to contain different starch levels (24%, 28%, 32%, 36% and 40% respectively). Triplicate groups of fish (24 fish per tank with an average body weight, of 8.5 g) were assigned to each diet. The results showed that dietary carbohydrate levels significantly affected the growth performance, hepatopancreatic lipid content, pyruvate kinase (PK) activity and whole-body lipid content. Growth performance, body crude lipid and plasma glucose concentrations showed a decreasing trend with an increase in dietary starch from 24% to 40%. Pyruvate kinase activities and hepatopancreatic lipid content showed an increasing trend with the dietary starch increasing from 24% to 32%, and then a decreasing trend with the dietary starch increasing from 32% to 40%. No significant difference in the hepatopancreatic hexokinase (HK) activity, plasma triglyceride contents, body crude protein, ash and calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents was observed between different treatments. In conclusion, higher dietary starch levels (32-40%) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the growth of gibel carp in the present study.

Small fish abundance is usually high in heavily vegetated habitats in Yangtze lakes, China. Visual and swimming barriers created by dense macrophytes beds could reduce feeding efficiency and growth of small fishes. We tested the hypothesis that small fishes in habitats with dense macrophytes would show decreased feeding efficiency and reduced growth rates by comparing feeding efficiency (measured as the relative weight of fore-gut contents), total length, and condition factor of four small young-of-the-year fishes collected in the near-shore (heavily vegetated) and central (less vegetated) areas of Liangzi Lake. Feeding efficiency, total length, or condition factor were each significantly reduced in the near-shore area compared with the central area for Ctenogobius giurinus, Pseudorasbora parva and Carassius auratus auratus. This supports our hypothesis that vegetation abundance may mediate feeding efficiency and growth of small fishes. Although Hypseleotris swinhonis did not show significant decreases in feeding efficiency or growth in the near-shore area, there was not any reversed tendency, i.e. increased feeding rate or growth in the near-shore area compared to the central area.

Flames are often stabilised on bluff-bodies, yet their surface temperatures are rarely measured. This paper presents temperature measurements for the bluff body surface of the Cambridge/Sandia Stratified Swirl Burner. The flame is stabilized by a bluff body, designed to provide a series of turbulent premixed and stratified methane/air flames with a variable degree of swirl and stratification. Recently, modellers have raised concerns about the role of surface temperature on the resulting gas temperatures and the overall heat loss of the burner. Laser-induced phosphorescence is used to measure surface temperatures, with Mg4GeO6F:Mn as the excitation phosphor, creating a spatially resolved temperature map. Results show that the temperature of the bluff body is in the range 550-900 K for different operating conditions. The temperature distribution is strongly correlated with the degree of swirl and local equivalence ratio, reflecting the temperature distribution obtained in the gas phase. The overall heat loss represents only a small fraction (<0.5%) of the total heat load, yet the local surface temperature may affect the local heat transfer and gas temperatures. © 2014 The Combustion Institute.

Experiments in tanks and cages were conducted to examine the effects of stocking density and body size of the Mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) on transplanted submersed macrophyte biomass. The early juvenile crab with 7.0 +/-0.6 mm. carapace width (CW) had little effect on plant biomass, regardless of the stocking densities. However, larger crabs (CW: 18.0 +/-2.2,35.0 +/-3.6, and 60.0 +/-5.7 mm) significantly influenced plant biomass, especially at large stocking densities. Predictive models, using crab body size and stocking density, were generated to demonstrate effect of the mitten crab on the changes Of plant biomass. The results indicate that dense mitten crab populations may adversely affect aquatic plant communities, particularly when its animal food resources are scarce.

We present the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons produced in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The photons are measured in the region -3.7 < eta < -2.3 using the photon Multiplicity detector in the STAR experiment at RHIC. The number of photons produced per average number of participating nucleon pairs increases with the beam energy and is independent of (lie collision centrality. For collisions with similar average numbers of participating nucleons the photon multiplicities are observed to be similar for An + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at a given beam energy. The ratios of the number of charged particles to photons in the measured pseudorapidity range are found to be 1.4 +/- 0.1 and 1.2 +/- 0.1 for root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV, respectively. The energy dependence of this ratio could reflect varying contributions from baryons to charged particles, while mesons are the dominant contributors to photon production in the given kinematic region. The photon pseudorapidity distributions normalized by average number of participating nucleon pairs, when plotted as a function of eta-Y-beam, are found to follow a longitudinal scaling independent of centrality and colliding ion species at both beam energies. Annual variations of egg production rate (EPR) and clutch size of Calanus sinicus, as well as body size of females (prosome length and dry weight), were investigated at a series of stations in the Southern Yellow Sea by onboard incubation. Calanus sinicus was spawning in all the 11 cruises investigated, and the annual variation of EPR was bimodal. Monthly average EPR was highest from May to July, respectively, 5.97, 5.36 and 6.30 eggs female(-1) d(-1), then decreased dramatically to only 1.37 eggs female(-1) d(-1) in August and attained the lowest 1.07 eggs female(-1) d(-1) in October. In November, average EPR increased again to 4.31 eggs female(-1) d(-1). Seasonal variation of clutch size was similar to EPR, except that it decreased gradually after August rather than dramatically as did EPR. Prosome length of females was maximum in May and minimum in October, but dry weight was highest in November. Monthly average EPR correlated better with prosome length than dry weight, while clutch size was rather determined by dry weight of females. It is suggested that egg production of C. sinicus was active during two discontinuous periods when both surface and bottom temperature fell into its favorite range (i.e. 10-23degreesC), and different reproductive strategies were adopted in these two reproductive peaks: other than the highest EPR, longer prosome length was also achieved by C. sinicus from May to July, while females in November developed shorter bodies but accumulated more energy for reproduction.
