In a previous study, we reported observation of the novel inverted phase (the minority blocks comprising the continuum phase) in kinetically controlled phase separating solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) triblock copolymer films [Zhang et al. Macromolecules 2000, 33, 9561-7]. In this study, we adopt the same approach to investigate the formation of inverted phase in a series of solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene) (SB) asymmetric diblock copolymers having nearly equal polystyrene (PS) weight fraction (about 30 wt %) but different molecular weights. The microstructure of the solution-cast block copolymer films resulting from different solvent evaporation rates, R, was inspected, from which the kinetically frozen-in phase structures at qualitatively different block copolymer concentrations and correspondingly different effective interaction parameter, chieff, can be deduced. Our result shows that there is a threshold molecular weight or range of molecular weight below which the unusual inverted phase is accessible by controlling the solvent evaporation rate. In comparing the present result with that of our previous study on the SBS triblock copolymer, we find that the formation of the inverted phase has little bearing on the chain architecture. We performed numerical calculations for the free energy of block copolymer cylinders and found that the normal phase is always preferred irrespective of the interaction parameter and molecular weight, which suggests the formation of the inverted phase to have a kinetic origin.

A biodegradable two block copolymer, poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-b- poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamic acid) (PCL-PBLG) was synthesized successfully by ring-opening polymerization of N-carboxyanhydride of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate (BLG-NCA) with aminophenyl-terminated PCL as a macroinitiator. The aminophenethoxyl-terminated PCL was prepared via hydrogenation of a 4-nitrophenethoxyl-teminated PCL, which was novelly obtained from the polymerization of c-caprolactone (CL) initiated by amino calcium 4-nitrobenzoxide. The structures of the block copolymer and its precursors from the initial step of PCL were confirmed and investigated by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, GPC, and FT-ICRMS analyses and DSC measurements.

We determine the mobility of positive and negative charge carriers in a soluble green-emitting alternating block copolymer with, a methoxy bi-subsbituted conjugated segment. The negative charge carrier mobility of 6 x 10(-11) cm(2)/V.s is directly determined using space-charge-limited current analytical expressions. Positive charge carrier transport is also space-charge-limited, with a mobility of I x 10(-8) cm(2)/V.s. The electron trap distribution is exponential, with a characteristic energy of similar to 0.12 eV. A hole trap with energy similar to 0.4 eV was observed. This copolymer is used as emissive material in organic light-emitting diodes that present brightness of similar to 900 cd/m(2) at 12.5 V.

We analyze current versus voltage data obtained using single carrier injection in several metal/polymer/metal sandwich structures. The polymer used in each case is a soluble blue-emitting alternating block copolymer. Our experimental results demonstrate that the electron transport is space-charge limited by the high density of traps having an exponential energy distribution (temperature dependent characteristic energy) in the copolymer. The electron mobility of 8x10(-10) cm(2)/V s is directly determined using space-charge-limited current analytical expressions. Hole transport is also space-charge limited, with a mobility of 2x10(-6) cm(2)/V s. A hole trap with energy 0.17 eV is observed. We compare these results with those obtained for related block copolymers with different spacer and conjugated segment lengths and discuss the influence of spacer length and conjugated segment length on the charge transport properties. The miscibility of blends of poly(styrene-co-allyl alcohol) (SAA) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA), poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) or polycarbonate (PC) has been studied by means of NMR, FT-IR and DSC techniques. It was found that SAA and PMMA, PEMA or PCL form miscible blends and SAA is only partially miscible with PC or PnBMA. Both phenyl groups and hydroxyl groups in SAA are involved in the intermolecular interactions between SAA and PMMA, PEMA or PCL. Also the hydroxyl-carbonyl hydrogen bonds existing in all the miscible blends studied are formed partially at the expense of the disruption of self-association of hydroxyl groups in pure SAA. The miscibility of blends of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) has been investigated by means of NMR and DSC techniques. It is found that there are intermolecular interactions between the phenyl groups in SAN and carbonyl groups in PMMA or PEMA, and the strength of this intermolecular interaction strongly depends on the properties of ester side groups in PEMA or PMMA, composition of the blends and a certain composition of the copolymer. It is this specific interaction instead of the intramolecular repulsion force within the copolymer that plays a key role for the miscibility of SAN/PMMA and SAN/PEMA blends.

The miscibility of blends of poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile) (VDC-AN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been studied with DSC, FT-IR, and NMR methods. The results indicate that the VDC-AN/PMMA blends are miscibile on a molecular level, and the dipole-dipole interactions between C=O and C-Cl-2 and/or interpolymer hydrogen bondings between COOCH3 and CN and CCl groups play the role on the miscibility of the blends. It is found that the -CCl2- groups have two different chemical environments in the pure VDC-AN copolymer, which may result from the different configurations of the copolymer, such as -CCl2- groups in the ''alternating'' segments and -CCl2- groups in the ''blocky'' segments as proposed. It is the -CCl2- group in the ''alternating'' segment that takes part in the dipole-dipole interaction with C=O group in PMMA.

The miscibility of blends of PMMA with SMA (50 wt% MA) has been investigated by means of NMR, FTIR and DSC techniques. The results indicate that the SMA/PMMA blends are miscible on a molecular level, and there are strong intermolecular interactions between the phenyl groups in SMA and carbonyl groups in PMMA. It is the intermolecular interactions instead of the intramolecular repulsion forces within the SMA copolymer that make the SMA/PMMA blends miscible. It is also found that the strength of the intermolecular interactions to some degree depends on the compositions of the blends.

The compatibility and crystallization behaviour of the mixtures of poly (tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer (PTHF-b-PMMA) with polyvinyl chloride has been studied. We found that the compatibility of these blends, in which there is special interaction between the homopolymer and the PMMA block of the copolymer, is much better than that of the AB/A type blends; and that the crystallization rate and crystallinity of PTHF microdomain changed greatly due to the swollen by PVC homopolymer. In this paper, these changes in cryatallization are well explained according to the theories of block copolymer blends and the density gradient model presented by JIANG Ming.

The viscosities of polystyrene-b-poly (ethylene/propylene) diblock copolymer in mixed solvent of n-octane and benzene were measured. The influences of the constitution of the mixed solvent, temperature and concentration were on the viscosity investigated. During the micellization the solution viscosity increases rapidly. The results are consistent with the study on the micellization by light scattering. The average mass of micelleswas measured and the hydrodynamic radius of gyrations were calculated.

The thermodynamics of micellization for polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene/propylene) two-Mock copolymer(SEP) in the mixtures of n-octane and benzene with different proportions have been studied in this paper, The critical micelle concentrations(GMC) of micelle solutions at various temperatures were measured by lost angle laser light scattering photometer(LALLS), The results shove that the micellization process of nonpolar copolymer SEP in hydrocarbon solvents ire exothermal, and the entropy change is negative, In contrast, far ordinary surfactants in water, it is the enthalpy contribution to the energy change which is responsible for micellization.

This thesis investigated the block copolymer (BCP) thin film characteristics and pattern formation using a set of predetermined molecular weights of PS-b-PMMA and PS-b-PDMS. Post BCP pattern fabrication on the required base substrate a dry plasma etch process was utilised for successful pattern transfer of the BCP resist onto underlying substrate. The resultant sub-10 nm device features were used in front end of line (FEoL) fabrication of active device components in integrated circuits (IC). The potential use of BCP templates were further extended to metal and metal-oxide nanowire fabrication. These nanowires were further investigated in real-time applications as novel sensors and supercapacitors.

This thesis investigated well-ordered block copolymer (BCP) thin film characteristics and their use for nanoscale pattern formation using a series of polystyrene-block-polymethylmethacrylate (PS-b-PMMA), polystyrene-blockpolydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) and polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) systems of various molecular weights. BCP thin films, which act as an ‘on-chip’ etch mask and material templates, are highly promising self-assembling process for future scalable nanolithography. Unlike conventional BCP processing methods, the work in this thesis demonstrates that well-ordered patterns can be achieved in a few seconds compared to several hours by use of a non-conventional microwave assisted technique. As a result, well-ordered BCP nanoscale structures can be developed in industry appropriate periods facilitating their incorporation into current technologies. An optimised and controlled plasma dry etch process was used for successful pattern transfer to the underlying silicon substrate. Long range ordered BCP templates were further modified by selective metal inclusion technique to form a hard mask template towards fabrication of high aspect ratio nanopillars and nanowires. The work described here is centred on how these templates might be used to generate function at substrate surfaces. Herein we describe a number of innovations which might allow their successful uptake in a number of applications.
