Research project HR-231, "Special Surface Preparation Prior to Bituminous Overlay", was initiated in 1982 to study the effectiveness of three different crack fillers in extending pavement life. In particular, this project was designed to determine if any of the fillers could substantially reduce the rate of subsurface deterioration and general deterioration of an asphalt pavement at crack locations. This project also sought to determine the effects of the various crack filling procedures on different thicknesses of bituminous overlays. The three fillers, a fly ash slurry, an emulsion, and a rubberized asphalt mixture, were used along with a control section with no crack filler material on a 2.5 mile section of Cerro Gordo Trunk Route S-25 south of the town of Thornton. This report discusses the construction and performance of each filler material and makes recommendations concerning future use of any of the materials used.

This research was initiated to identify methods of reducing the occurrence of transverse cracking. Eight (four repetitive) research sections were established to study three variations in the asphalt concrete pavement. The first variation was the comparison of low- and high-temperature-susceptible asphalt cement (AC) from two different sources. The second variable was to saw and seal transverse joints at spacings varying from 40 to 100 ft. The third variable was to increase the AC content in the asphalt treated base by 1 percent. The research sections were constructed with relatively few problems. Crack and joint surveys have been conducted on all research sections at intervals of less than 1 year since construction. No cracking was identified after the first winter season. The sawed joints also remained sealed through the first winter. At an age of approximately 1 1/2 years there was substantial cracking of the high-temperature-susceptible AC sections and substantial failure of the sealant material in the sawed joints. After almost 4 years, the asphalt pavement constructed with the high-temperature-susceptible AC produced a crack interval of 35 ft, the low-temperature-susceptible AC yielded an interval of 170 ft, and the low-temperature-susceptible AC with an increased AC content yielded an interval of 528 ft. The Pen-Vis number is an effective measure of temperature susceptibility of asphalt cements. The frequency of transverse cracking is affected by the temperature susceptibility of the AC. An increased AC content also reduces the frequency of transverse cracking.

This is Part 3 of a study of creep and resilient modulus testing of hot mix asphalt concrete. The creep and resilient modulus testing in Part 1 showed the improved load carrying characteristics of crushed particles. Cores from pavements drilled in Part 2 exhibited a poor correlation with rutting and creep/resilient modulus on pavement with a range of rut depths. The objective of Part 3 was to determine the relationship of creep and resilient modulus for 1) Marshall specimens from laboratory mixing for mix design; 2) Marshall specimens from construction plant mixing; and 3) cores drilled from the hot mixed asphalt pavement. The creep and resilient modulus data from these three sources exhibited substantial variations. No meaningful correlations of the results from these three sources were obtained.

The objective of this research project was to identify a method of reducing the adverse effect of transverse cracking and to improve the performance of asphalt pavement. The research involved three variations from the contractor's planned operation. Briefly, they were: (1) use of another asphalt cement; (2) saw and seal transverse joints; and (3) increased asphalt cement content. The following conclusions were reached: (1) an improved sealant or sealing procedure is needed if transverse joints are to be used in asphalt pavements; (2) the penetration-viscosity number (PVN) is an effective measure of the temperature susceptibility of asphalt cements; (3) the use of a high temperature susceptible asphalt cement produced severe transverse cracking; (4) the use of asphalt cements with low temperature susceptibility will reduce the frequency of transverse cracking; and (5) an increased asphalt cement content in the asphalt treated base will reduce the frequency of transverse cracking.

Safety is an important aspect of highway design. Texture and frictional properties are important characteristics in providing safe roadways. Longevity of desirable frictional properties is highly dependent on the aggregate within asphalt pavement. Iowa unfortunately has areas of the State where the locally available aggregate will not give long lasting desirable frictional properties. Iowa has utilized sprinkle treatments to improve the safety of many new asphalt concrete pavements.

ABSTRACT Geographic Information System (GIS) is an indispensable software tool in forest planning. In forestry transportation, GIS can manage the data on the road network and solve some problems in transportation, such as route planning. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the pattern of the road network and define transport routes using GIS technology. The present research was conducted in a forestry company in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The criteria used to classify the pattern of forest roads were horizontal and vertical geometry, and pavement type. In order to determine transport routes, a data Analysis Model Network was created in ArcGIS using an Extension Network Analyst, allowing finding a route shorter in distance and faster. The results showed a predominance of horizontal geometry classes average (3) and bad (4), indicating presence of winding roads. In the case of vertical geometry criterion, the class of highly mountainous relief (4) possessed the greatest extent of roads. Regarding the type of pavement, the occurrence of secondary coating was higher (75%), followed by primary coating (20%) and asphalt pavement (5%). The best route was the one that allowed the transport vehicle travel in a higher specific speed as a function of road pattern found in the study.

In order to evaluate the use of shallow seismic technique to delineate geological and geotechnical features up to 40 meters depth in noisy urban areas covered with asphalt pavement, five survey lines were conducted in the metropolitan area of São Paulo City. The data were acquired using a 24-bit, 24-channel seismograph, 30 and 100 Hz geophones and a sledgehammer-plate system as seismic source. Seismic reflection data were recorded using a CMP (common mid point) acquisition method. The processing routine consisted of: prestack band-pass filtering (90-250 Hz); automatic gain control (AGC); muting (digital zeroin) of dead/noisy traces, ground roll, air-wave and refracted-wave; CMP sorting; velocity analyses; normal move-out corrections; residual static corrections; f-k filtering; CMP stacking. The near surface is geologically characterized by unconsolidated fill materials and Quaternary sediments with organic material overlying Tertiary sediments with the water table 2 to 5 m below the surface. The basement is composed of granite and gneiss. Reflections were observed from 40 milliseconds to 65 ms two-way traveltime and were related to the silt clay layer and fine sand layer contact of the Tertiary sediments and to the weathered basement. The CMP seismic-reflection technique has been shown to be useful for mapping the sedimentary layers and the bedrock of the São Paulo sedimentary basin for the purposes of shallow investigations related to engineering problems. In spite of the strong cultural noise observed in these urban areas and problems with planting geophones we verified that, with the proper equipment, field parameters and particularly great care in data collection and processing, we can overcome the adverse field conditions and to image reflections from layers as shallow as 20 meters.

The design number of gyrations (Ndesign) introduced by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and used in the Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement (Superpave) mix design method has been commonly used in flexible pavement design throughout the US since 1996. Ndesign, also known as the compaction effort, is used to simulate field compaction during construction and has been reported to produce air voids that are unable to reach ultimate pavement density within the initial 2 to 3 years post-construction, potentially having an adverse impact on long-term performance. Other state transportation agencies have conducted studies validating the Ndesign for their specific regions, which resulted in modifications of the gyration effort for the various traffic levels. Validating this relationship for Iowa asphalt mix designs will lead to better correlations between mix design target voids, field voids, and performance. A comprehensive analysis of current Ndesign levels investigated the current levels with existing mixes and pavements and developed initial asphalt mix design recommendations that identify an optimum Ndesign through the use of performance data tests.

Recycled materials replacing part of virgin materials in highway applications has shown great benefits to the society and environment. Beneficial use of recycled materials can save landfill places, sparse natural resources, and energy consumed in milling and hauling virgin materials. Low price of recycled materials is favorable to cost-saving in pavement projects. Considering the availability of recycled materials in the State of Maryland (MD), four abundant recycled materials, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), foundry sand (FS), and dredged materials (DM), were studied. A survey was conducted to collect the information of current usage of the four recycled materials in States’ Department of Transportation (DOTs). Based on literature review, mechanical and environmental properties, recommendations, and suggested test standards were investigated separately for the four recycled materials in different applications. Constrains in using these materials were further studied in order to provide recommendations for the development of related MD specifications. To measure social and environmental benefits from using recycled materials, life-cycle assessment was carried out with life-cycle analysis (LCA) program, PaLATE, and green highway rating system, BEST-in-Highway. The survey results indicated the wide use of RAP and RCA in hot mix asphalt (HMA) and graded aggregate base (GAB) respectively, while FS and DM are less used in field. Environmental concerns are less, but the possibly low quality and some adverse mechanical characteristics may hinder the widely use of these recycled materials. Technical documents and current specifications provided by State DOTs are good references to the usage of these materials in MD. Literature review showed consistent results with the survey. Studies from experimental research or site tests showed satisfactory performance of these materials in highway applications, when the substitution rate, gradation, temperature, moisture, or usage of additives, etc. meet some requirements. The results from LCA revealed significant cost savings in using recycled materials. Energy and water consumption, gas emission, and hazardous waste generation generally showed reductions to some degree. Use of new recycled technologies will contribute to more sustainable highways.

Nowadays, an important world’s population growth forecast establish that an increase of 2 billion people is expected by 2050. (UN,2019). This increment of people worldwide involves more humans, as well as growth of the demand for the construction of new residential, institutional, industrial, and infrastructural areas, prompting to a higher consumption of natural resources as required for construction materials. In addition, an effect of this population growth is the production and accumulation of waste causing a serious environmental and economic issue around the world. As an alternative to just producing more waste at the final stage of a building, house, road, among other concrete-based structures, adequate techniques must be applied for recycling and reusing these potential materials. The main priority of the thesis is to foment and evaluate the sustainable construction work leading to environmental-friendly actions that promote the reuse and recycling of construction waste, focusing on the use of construction recycled construction materials as an alternative for sub-base and base of road structure application. This thesis is committed to the analysis of the several laboratory tests carried out for achieving the physical-mechanical properties of the studied materials (recycled concrete aggregates + reclaimed asphalt pavement (RCA+RAP) and stabilized crushed sleepers). All these tests have been carried out in the Laboratory of Roads from the University of Bologna and in the experimental site in CAR srl., at Imola. The results are reported in tables, graphs, and are discussed. The mechanical properties values obtained from the laboratory tests are analysed and compared with standard values declared in the Italian and European normative for roads construction and to the results obtained from in-situ tests in the experimentation field (CAR srl in Imola) with the same materials. This to analyse the performance of them under natural conditions.

This demonstration project consisted of three adjacent highway resurfacing projects using asphalt cement concrete removed from an Interstate highway which had become severely rutted. The salvaged asphaltic concrete was later crushed and hauled to a plant site where it was combined with virgin materials to resurface the three projects. Only two of the projects were used for performance evaluation as the third project was in an interchange area including ramps and was otherwise too short. It was concluded that recycling was cost effective and a high quality surface can be constructed using recycled asphalt cement concrete.
