This thesis deals with the population characteristics of Artemia and the effect of different environmental parameters on the different stages of Artemia in a salina at Tuticorin, south east coast of India. The present investigation was carried out from 1985 to I987. The study was initiated by undertaking a survey to find out suitable Artemia habitats along the south east coast of India and a perennial salina with an area of 0.25 ha was selected at Karapad (Tuticorin). Weekly samplings were made for two full calender years (1986-87) to collect the different stages of Artemia population as well as the different environmental parameters. The thesis comprises of the following sections: Introduction, materials and methods, systematics, biology and distribution of Artemia, results and discussion, summary and bibliography. The section on results and discussion gives the characteristics of Artemia population in the salina, the seasonal variations of different environmental parameters in the salina and their effects on different stages of Artemia population. Description of an experiment conducted to show the sudden changes of salinity on different stages of Artemia is also given as a separate section.

We propose antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an alternative strategy to reduce the use of antibiotics in shrimp larviculture systems. The growth of a multiple antibiotic resistant Vibrio harveyi strain was effectively controlled by treating the cells with Rose Bengal and photosensitizing for 30 min using a halogen lamp. This resulted in the death of > 50% of the cells within the first 10 min of exposure and the 50% reduction in the cell wall integrity after 30 min could be attributed to the destruction of outer membrane protein of V. harveyi by reactive oxygen intermediates produced during the photosensitization. Further, mesocosm experiments with V. harveyi and Artemia nauplii demonstrated that in 30 min, the aPDT could kill 78.9% and 91.2% of heterotrophic bacterial and Vibrio population respectively. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that aPDT with its rapid action and as yet unreported resistance development possibilities could be a propitious strategy to reduce the use of antibiotics in shrimp larviculture systems and thereby, avoid their hazardous effects on human health and the ecosystem at large.

Historicamente, o franciscanismo sempre utilizou os referenciais místicos da Ordem para renovar suas diretrizes em momentos de crise. Dentre os referenciais mais usados, dois se destacam: São Francisco e as Chagas de Cristo nele impressas. O franciscano colonial brasileiro em pleno século XVIII, precisamente a partir de 1750, é marcado por um retorno às fontes franciscanas. Procuramos trilhar esse momento de renovação espiritual no Brasil a partir da arte iconográfica nos conventos do Nordeste e da literatura desenvolvidas por franciscanos brasileiros. Em 1754, é pintado um magnífico Orbis Seraficus no Salão de Santana, no convento de Olinda. Em 1761, Fr. Antônio de Santa Maria Jaboatão retoma esse Orbis Seraficus e acrescenta a existência de um Novo Brasílico na sua crônica. A nossa pesquisa consiste em desvendar a importância da espiritualidade franciscana na formação de um novo perfil político para o Brasil em meados do século XVIII.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the zootechnical performance (survival and growth) of Litopenaeus vannamei post-Iarvae fed an artificial shrimp diet supplemented with Artemia flakes or freeze-dried Artemia embryos. For that purpose, 20 culturing units were individually stocked with 50 shrimp post-Iarvae (average dry weight of 0,3 ± 0,03 mg) at a stocking density of 20 post-larvae per liter, and fed the experimental diets to satiation during 20 days. The experimental design consisted of four diets (T1, T2, T3 and T4) with five repetitions each. For treatments T1, T2 and T3, dietary supplements of 5mg of Artemia flakes (T1), freeze-dried Artemia embryos (T2), and of the commercial shrimp diet (T3) were offered 2 hours after the shrimp were initially fed the commercial shrimp diet. For treatment T4 (control), no additive was offered 2 hours after the initial feeding. Shrimp survival, absolut (GPA) and relative increase in weight (GPR), and specific growth rate (TCR) were used as evaluation criteria. After the experimental period, no significant statistical differences (p>0,05) in survival were observed. Regarding growth, the dietary treatment which used freeze-dried Artemia embryos as an additive (T2) presented the best results for GPA (6,7 ± 0,7 mg). There were no statistical differences within treatments T1, T3 and T4 (p>0,05). AIso, post-larvae fed freeze-dried embryos (T2) showed a relative increase in weight (2241,4%) which differed significantly (p<0,05) from T4(1911,7%) but not from T1 (1801,6%) or T3 (1946,7%). In conclusion, the results of the current study indicate that an artificial shrimp diet supplemented with freeze-dried Artemia embryos fulfils the nutritional requirements of post-larvae L. vannamei and promotes a better growth than diets not supplemented with Artemia flakes

Aiming at a precocious substitution of live prey by artificial diet, a 20-day experiment with pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, larvae using co-feeding and abrupt weaning strategies was set up. At the end of the experiment, larvae fed Artemia showed the best results (P < 0.05) in weight, total length and biomass, compared with other treatments. Larvae fed exclusively a microencapsulated diet never ingested the diet. Diet ingestion in co-fed and abrupt-weaned larvae was low, but did increase during the experiment; however, Artemia influenced diet ingestion on co-fed larvae. Careful considerations should be given to diet processing and formulation to ensure survival and growth of larvae fed exclusively on prepared diets. © 2005 by The Haworth Press, Inc. The phytochemical profile of ethanolic extract of Solanum lycocarpum fruits was analyzed and preliminary toxicity tests were performed against brine shrimp larvae. The extract was subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis to identify the main classes of secondary metabolites and tested against the larvae of A. salina to obtain the median lethal concentrations (LC50%). The phytochemical tests showed the presence of phenols, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and free steroids. The extract was fractionated with various solvents for toxicity testing against the larvae and the hydroalcoholic fraction showed considerable cytotoxicity (CL50% = 285.546 g/mL).
