The influence of hot-working and ageing on notched-strength and ductility of aluminium alloy AA6082.

A ball-on-flat reciprocating micro-tribometer has been used to measure the friction coefficient between aluminium alloy strip and a steel ball. A relatively small ball and correspondingly low contact load is used to give a contact width of the order of 100μm, closer to asperity contact widths than generally found for this type of test. The effects of load, initial strip surface roughness, lubricants and boundary additives are investigated. It is found that the friction coefficient is significantly reduced by the addition of a lubricant. Observations of the wear tracks and ball surface show that the material transfer from aluminium to the ball is reduced in the presence of the lubricant. The initial friction coefficient is further reduced by the addition of a boundary additive, but the friction coefficient after 8 cycles is unchanged. This work presents a computational framework based on finite element methods to simulate the fibre-embedding process using ultrasonic consolidation process. The computational approach comprises of a material model which takes into account thermal and acoustic softening effects and a friction model which indicates the realistic friction behaviour at the interfaces. The derived material model and developed friction model have been incorporated in finite element model. Using the implemented material and friction model, thermo-mechanical analyses of embedding of fibre in aluminium alloy 3003 has been performed. Effect of different process parameters, such as velocity of sonotrode, displacement amplitude of ultrasonic vibration and applied loads, is studied and compared with the experimental results. The presented work has specially focused on the quality of the developed weld which could be evaluated by the friction work and the coverage of the fibre which is estimated by the plastic flow around the fibre. The computed friction work obtained from the thermomechanial analyses performed in this study show a similar trend as that of the experimentally found fracture energies. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2010.

In this work, a computational framework has been proposed to successfully simulate the fibre embedding using ultrasonic consolidation process. The main components of the proposed computational approach are a developed constitutive model and a friction model which are especially suitable for the condition of ultrasonic process. The effect of different process parameters, such as velocity of sonotrode, displacement amplitude of ultrasonic vibration and applied loads are studied. The presented work especially focuses on the quality of the developed weld and the fibre coverage due to the plastic flow around the fibre. The areas of maximum plastic flow predicted by the simulation are confirmed by the EBSD microstructural studies. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Electroless nickel composite coatings with silicon carbide, SiC, as reinforcing particles deposited with Ni–P onto aluminium alloy, LM24, having zincating as under layer were subjected to heat treatment using air furnace. The changes at the interface were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to probe the chemistry changes upon heat treatment. Microhardness tester with various loads using both Knoop and Vickers indenters was used to study the load effect clubbed with the influence of second phase particles on the coating at the vicinity of the interface. It was observed that zinc was absent at the interface after elevated temperature heat treatment at 400–500 °C. Precipitation of copper and nickel with a distinct demarcation (copper rich belt) along the coating interface was seen with irregular thickness of the order of 1 μm. Migration of copper from the bulk aluminium alloy could have been the factor. Brittleness of the coating was confirmed on heat treatment when indented with Vickers. However, in composite coating the propagation of the microcrack was stopped by the embedded particles but the microcracks continue in the matrix when not interrupted by second phase particles (SiC).

Electroless nickel (EN) and electroless nickel composite (ENC) coatings were deposited on aluminium alloy substrate, LM24. The micro abrasion test was conducted to study the wear behaviour of the coatings with the effect of SiC concentration. Microhardness of the coatings was tested also. The wear scars were analysed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The wear resistance was found to be improved in composite coating that has higher microhardness as compared to particles free and the bare aluminium substrate. In as-deposited condition for the composite coating, the wear volume increases on increase in SiC percentage in the coating but is found to be minimum for lower SiC percentage. The increase in hardness on heat treatment at 400°C is due to the hardening or grain coarsening with the formation Ni3P.
