The oxidative degradation of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), a water soluble polymer, was studied at various temperatures with different concentrations of persulfates, potassium persulfate (KPS), ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium persulfate (SPS). The photodegradation of PAA was also examined with APS as oxidizer. The degraded samples were analyzed for the time evolution of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography. A theoretical model based on the continuous distribution kinetics was developed that accounted for the polymer degradation and the dissociation of persulfate. The rate coefficients for the oxidative and photooxidative degradation of PAA were determined from the parametric fit of the model with experimental data. The rate of degradation increased with increasing amount of persulfate in both oxidative and photooxidative degradation. The rate of degradation also increased with increasing temperature in the case of oxidative degradation.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The lifetime behavior of a H-2/O-2 proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell with polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) membrane have been investigated in order to give an insight into the degradation mechanism of the PSSA membrane. The distribution of sulfur concentration in the cross section of the PSSA membrane was measured by energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, and the chemical composition of the PSSA membrane was characterized by infrared spectroscopy before and after the lifetime experiment. The degradation mechanism of the PSSA membrane is postulated as: the oxygen reduction at the cathode proceeds through some peroxide intermediates during the fuel cell operation, and these intermediates have strong oxidative ability and may chemically attack the tertiary hydrogen at the a carbon of the PSSA; the degradation of the PSSA membrane mainly takes place at the cathode side of the cell, and the loss of the aromatic rings and the SO3- groups simultaneously occurs from the PSSA membrane. A new kind of the PSSA-Nafion composite membrane, where the Nafion membrane is bonded with the PSSA membrane and located at the cathode of the cell, was designed to prevent oxidation degradation of the PSSA membrane in fuel cells. The performances of fuel cells with PSSA-Nafion101 and PSSA-recast Nafion composite membranes are demonstrated to be stable after 835 h and 240 h, respectively.

The possibility of mesoporous acid solid as a carrier for metallocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization and catalyst for polyethylene (PE) catalytic degradation was investigated. Here, HMCM- 41 and AIMCM-41, and mesoporous silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieves (SAPO1 and SAPO2) were synthesized and used as acid solid. Much more gases were produced during catalytic degradation in PE/acid solid mixtures via in situ polymerization than those via physical mixing. The particle size distribution results exhibited that the particle size of SAPO1 in the PE/SAPO1 mixture via in situ polymerization was about 1/14 times of that of the original SAPO1 or SAPO1-supported metallocene catalyst. This work shows a novel technology for chemical recycling of polyolefin.

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) has many favourable attributes for tissue engineering scaffold applications. A major drawback, however, is its slow degradation rate, typically greater than 3 years. In this study PCL was melt blended with a small percentage of poly(aspartic acid-co-lactide) (PAL) and the degradation behaviour was evaluated in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at 37 degrees C. The addition of PAL was found to significantly enhance the degradation profile of PCL. Subsequent degradation behaviour was investigated in terms of the polymer's mechanical properties, Molecular weight (M-w), mass changes and thermal characteristics. The results indicate that the addition of PAL accelerates the degradation of PCL, with 20% mass loss recorded after just 7 months in vitro for samples containing 8 wt% PAL. The corresponding pure PCL samples exhibited no mass loss over the same time period. In vitro assessment of PCL and PCL/PAL composites in tissue Culture medium in the absence of cells revealed stable pH readings with time. SEM studies of cell/biomaterial interactions demonstrated biocompatibility of C3H10T1/2 cells with PCL and PCL/PAL composites at all concentrations of PAL additive. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Bioresorbable polymers such as polylactide (PIA) and polylactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) have been used successfully as biomaterials in a wide range of medical applications. However, their slow degradation rates and propensity to lose strength before mass have caused problems. A central challenge for the development of these materials is the assurance of consistent and predictable in vivo degradation. Previous work has illustrated the potential to influence polymer degradation using electron beam (e-beam) radiation. The work addressed in this paper investigates further the utilisation of e-beam radiation in order to achieve a more surface specific effect. Variation of e-beam energy was studied as a means to control the effective penetrative depth in poly-L-lactide (PLEA). PLEA samples were exposed to e-beam radiation at individual energies of 0.5 MeV, 0.75 MeV and 1.5 MeV. The near-surface region of the PLEA samples was shown to be affected by e-beam irradiation with induced changes in molecular weight, morphology, flexural strength and degradation profile. Moreover, the depth to which the physical properties of the polymer were affected is dependent on the beam energy used. Computer modelling of the transmission of each e-beam energy level used corresponded well with these findings. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The photonic efficiencies of films of Evonik (formerly Degussa) P25 TiO2 and carbon-modified TiO2 Kronos VLP 7000 samples are reported as a function of excitation wavelength (300–430 nm; FWHM ∼ 7.5 nm), i.e. the action spectra, for the degradation of stearic acid, a model organic for the photocatalytic destruction of solid surface organic pollutants. For each of these semiconductor photocatalysts, at 365 nm (FWHM = 18 nm), the dependence of the rate of degradation of stearic acid, upon the irradiance, I, is determined and the rate is found to be proportional to I0.65 and I0.82 for P25 and Kronos titania, respectively. Assuming this relationship holds at all wavelengths, the action spectra for two different semiconductor photocatalysts is modified by plotting, (RSA (rate of stearic acid destruction, units: molecules cm−2 s−1)/Iθ) vs. wavelength of excitation (λexcit), and both differ noticeably from those of the original (unmodified) action spectra, which are plots of (RSA/I = photonic efficiency, ξ) vs. λexcit. The shape of the modified action spectrum for P25 TiO2 is consistent with that reported by others for other organic mineralisation reactions and correlates well with diffuse reflectance data for P25 TiO2 (Kubelka–Munk plot), although there is some evidence that the active phase, in the photodegradation of stearic acid, is the anatase form present in P25. The unmodified and modified action spectra of the beige Kronos VLP 7000 TiO2 compound exhibits little or no activity in the visible i.e. (λexcit > 400 nm) and a peak at 350 nm. The Kronos powder contains a yellow/brown conjugated, extractable, organic sensitiser which has been identified by others as the species responsible for its reported photocatalytic visible light activity. But, irradiation of the Kronos powder film, with and without a stearic acid coating, in air, using UVA or visible light, bleaches rapidly (<60 min) most, if not all, of the little colour exhibited by the original Kronos powder. The photobleached form of the Kronos has a similar action spectrum to that of the unbleached form, which, in turn, appears very similar to that of P25 titania, at wavelengths >350 nm. It is proposed that the difference between the Kronos and P25 powder films at wavelengths <350 nm is due to a photodegradation-resistant, previously unidentified (but extractable using MeCN) UV-absorbing organic species in the former which screens the titania particles at these lower wavelengths. The implications of these observations are discussed briefly.

Recently, new lines of yellow-seeded (CS-Y) and black-seeded canola (CS-B) have been developed with chemical and structural alteration through modern breeding technology. However, no systematic study was found on the bioactive compounds, chemical functional groups, fatty acid profiles, inherent structure, nutrient degradation and absorption, or metabolic characteristics between the newly developed yellow- and black-seeded canola lines. This study aimed to systematically characterize chemical, structural, and nutritional features in these canola lines. The parameters accessed include bioactive compounds and antinutrition factors, chemical functional groups, detailed chemical and nutrient profiles, energy value, nutrient fractions, protein structure, degradation kinetics, intestinal digestion, true intestinal protein supply, and feed milk value. The results showed that the CS-Y line was lower (P ≤ 0.05) in neutral detergent fiber (122 vs 154 g/kg DM), acid detergent fiber (61 vs 99 g/kg DM), lignin (58 vs 77 g/kg DM), nonprotein nitrogen (56 vs 68 g/kg DM), and acid detergent insoluble protein (11 vs 35 g/kg DM) than the CS-B line. There was no difference in fatty acid profiles except C20:1 eicosenoic acid content (omega-9) which was in lower in the CS-Y line (P < 0.05) compared to the CS-B line. The glucosinolate compounds differed (P < 0.05) in terms of 4-pentenyl, phenylethyl, 3-CH3-indolyl, and 3-butenyl glucosinolates (2.9 vs 1.0 μmol/g) between the CS-Y and CS-B lines. For bioactive compounds, total polyphenols tended to be different (6.3 vs 7.2 g/kg DM), but there were no differences in erucic acid and condensed tannins with averages of 0.3 and 3.1 g/kg DM, respectively. When protein was portioned into five subfractions, significant differences were found in PA, PB1 (65 vs 79 g/kg CP), PB2, and PC fractions (10 vs 33 g/kg CP), indicating protein degradation and supply to small intestine differed between two new lines. In terms of protein structure spectral profile, there were no significant differences in functional groups of amides I and II, α helix, and β-sheet structure as well as their ratio between the two new lines, indicating no difference in protein structure makeup and conformation between the two lines. In terms of energy values, there were significant differences in total digestible nutrient (TDN; 149 vs 133 g/kg DM), metabolizable energy (ME; 58 vs 52 MJ/kg DM), and net energy for lactation (NEL; 42 vs 37 MJ/kg DM) between CS-Y and CS-B lines. For in situ rumen degradation kinetics, the two lines differed in soluble fraction (S; 284 vs 341 g/kg CP), potential degradation fraction (D; 672 vs 590 g/kg CP), and effective degraded organic matter (EDOM; 710 vs 684 g/kg OM), but no difference in degradation rate. CS-Y had higher digestibility of rumen bypass protein in the intestine than CS-B (566 vs 446 g/kg of RUP, P < 0.05). Modeling nutrient supply results showed that microbial protein synthesis (MCP; 148 vs 171 g/kg DM) and rumen protein degraded balance (DPB; 108 vs 127 g/kg DM) were lower in the CS-Y line, but there were no differences in total truly digested protein in small intestine (DVE) and feed milk value (FMV) between the two lines. In conclusion, the new yellow line had different nutritional, chemical, and structural features compared to the black line. CS-Y provided better nutrient utilization and availability.

Background: Intravenous infusions of glucose and amino acids increase both nitrogen balance and muscle accretion. We hypothesised that co-infusion of glucose ( to stimulate insulin) and essential amino acids (EAA) would act additively to improve nitrogen balance by decreasing muscle protein degradation in association with alterations in muscle expression of components of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway. Methods: We examined the effect of a 5 day intravenous infusions of saline, glucose, EAA and glucose + EAA, on urinary nitrogen excretion and muscle protein degradation. We carried out the study in 6 restrained calves since ruminants offer the advantage that muscle protein degradation can be assessed by excretion of 3 methyl-histidine and multiple muscle biopsies can be taken from the same animal. On the final day of infusion blood samples were taken for hormone and metabolite measurement and muscle biopsies for expression of ubiquitin, the 14-kDa E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, and proteasome sub-units C2 and C8. Results: On day 5 of glucose infusion, plasma glucose, insulin and IGF-1 concentrations were increased while urea nitrogen excretion and myofibrillar protein degradation was decreased. Co-infusion of glucose + EAA prevented the loss of urinary nitrogen observed with EAA infusions alone and enhanced the increase in plasma IGF-1 concentration but there was no synergistic effect of glucose + EAA on the decrease in myofibrillar protein degradation. Muscle mRNA expression of the ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, 14-kDa E2 and proteasome sub-unit C2 were significantly decreased, after glucose but not amino acid infusions, and there was no further response to the combined infusions of glucose + EAA. Conclusion: Prolonged glucose infusion decreases myofibrillar protein degradation, prevents the excretion of infused EAA, and acts additively with EAA to increase plasma IGF-1 and improve net nitrogen balance. There was no evidence of synergistic effects between glucose + EAA infusion on muscle protein degradation or expression of components of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway.

The present study explores for the first time, the effectiveness of photocatalytic oxidation of. humic acid (HA) in the increasingly important highly saline water. TiO2 (Degussa P25), TiO2 (Anatase), TiO2 (Rutile), TiO2 (Mesoporous) and ZnO dispersions were used as catalysts employing a medium pressure mercury lamp. The effect of platinum loading on P25 and zinc oxide was also investigated. The zinc oxide with 0.3% platinum loading was the most efficient catalyst. The preferred medium for the degradation of HA using ZnO is alkaline, whereas for TiO2 it is acidic. In addition, a comparative study of HA decomposition in artificial seawater (ASW) and natural seawater (NSW) is reported, and the surface areas and band gaps of the catalysts employed were also determined. A spectrophotometric method was used to estimate the extent of degradation of HA. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
