Heterogeneity and Photoinhibition of Photosystem II Studied with Thermoluminescence1

Thermoluminescence (TL) signals were recorded from grana stacks, margins, and stroma lamellae from fractionated, dark-adapted thylakoid membranes of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) in the absence and in the presence of 2,6-dichlorphenylindophenol (DCMU). In the absence of DCMU, the TL signal from grana fractions consisted of a homogenous B-band, which originates from recombination of the semi-quinone QB− with the S2 state of the water-splitting complex and reflects active photosystem II (PSII). In the presence of DCMU, the B-band was replaced by the Q-band, which originates from an S2QA− recombination. Margin fractions mainly showed two TL-bands, the B- and C-bands, at approximately 50°C in the absence of DCMU, and Q- and C-bands in the presence of DCMU. The C-band is ascribed to a TyrD+-QA− recombination. In the absence of DCMU, the fractions of stromal lamellae mainly gave rise to a TL emission at 42°C. The intensity of this band was independent of the number of excitation flashes and was shifted to higher temperatures (52°C) after the addition of DCMU. Based on these observations, this band was considered to be a C-band. After photoinhibitory light treatment of uncoupled thylakoid membranes, the TL intensities of the B- and Q-bands decreased, whereas the intensity at 45°C (C-band) slightly increased. It is proposed that the 42 to 52°C band that was observed in marginal and stromal lamellae and in photoinhibited thylakoid membranes reflects inactive PSII centers that are assumed to be equivalent to inactive PSII QB-nonreducing centers.

An antibody-interleukin 2 fusion protein overcomes tumor heterogeneity by induction of a cellular immune response.

Antibody-based therapies for cancer rely on the expression of defined antigens on neoplastic cells. However, most tumors display heterogeneity in the expression of such antigens. We demonstrate here that antibody-targeted interleukin 2 delivery overcomes this problem by induction of a host immune response. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that the antibody-interleukin 2 fusion protein-induced eradication of established tumors is mediated by host immune cells, particularly CD8+ T cells. Because of this cellular immune response, antibody-directed interleukin 2 therapy is capable to address established metastases displaying substantial heterogeneity in expression of the targeted antigen. This effector mechanism further enables the induction of partial regressions of large subcutaneous tumors that exceeded more than 5% of the body weight. These observations indicate that antibody-directed cytokine delivery offers an effective new tool for cancer therapy.

What We Are Learning About the Diverse Backgrounds of Academic Library Users: An Overview of Research Designs and Methods in Information Behaviour Studies

Academic libraries increasingly serve a more diverse population of users not only in regard to race and ethnicity, but also to age, gender, language, sexual orientation, and national and cultural backgrounds. This papers reports the findings of the study that explored information behaviour research as a potential source of information about diversity of academic library users and examined the relationship between the use of different research designs and data collection methods and the information gathered about users’ diverse backgrounds. The study found that information behaviour research offers limited insight into the diversity of academic library users. The choice of a research design was not critical but the use of multiple data collection played a role in gathering information about culturally diverse users.

Subclinical social anxiety and academic performance in adolescence: analysis of theoretical and practical implications

This study analyses the relationship between self-reported social anxiety and academic performance in a sample of 1,616 Spanish students (52.1% males) in compulsory secondary education, aged 12 to 16 years old. Social anxiety was assessed by the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) and academic performance was measured with school grades and failing grades. Results reveal that adolescents with social anxiety show a similar academic performance to adolescents without social anxiety. Although t tests found some significant differences in academic grades and number of failing grades, the effect size analysis showed that these differences had no empirical relevance. These findings are discussed considering the gender and grade levels and their theoretical and practical implication.

Relationship between sociometric types and academic achievement in a sample of compulsory secondary education students

The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between sociometric types, behavioural categories and academic achievement in a sample of 1,349 compulsory secondary education students (51.7% boys), ranging in age from 12 to 16 years. The students’ sociometric identification was performed by using the Programa Socio and academic performance was measured by school marks provided by teachers in the subjects of Spanish language, mathematics and average academic performance. The results show that sociometric types were significant predictors of academic achievement, as students who were rated positively by their peers (popular, leaders, collaborators and good students) were more likely to have high academic achievement (in mathematics, Spanish language and average academic achievement) than students rated negatively by peers (rejected-aggressive, rejected-shy, neglected and bullies).
