The covalent linkage between the side-chain and the backbone nitrogen atom of proline leads to the formation of the five-membered pyrrolidine ring and hence restriction of the backbone torsional angle phi to values of -60 degrees +/- 30 degrees for the L-proline. Diproline segments constitute a chain fragment with considerably reduced conformational choices. In the current study, the conformational states for the diproline segment ((L)Pro-(L)Pro) found in proteins has been investigated with an emphasis on the cis and trans states for the Pro-Pro peptide bond. The occurrence of diproline segments in turns and other secondary structures has been studied and compared to that of Xaa-Pro-Yaa segments in proteins which gives us a better understanding on the restriction imposed on other residues by the diproline segment and the single proline residue. The study indicates that P(II)-P(II) and P(II)-alpha are the most favorable conformational states for the diproline segment. The analysis on Xaa-Pro-Yaa sequences reveals that the XaaPro peptide bond exists preferably as the trans conformer rather than the cis conformer. The present study may lead to a better understanding of the behavior of proline occurring in diproline segments which can facilitate various designed diproline-based synthetic templates for biological and structural studies. Three new hydroxymethyl-linked non-natural disaccharide analogues, containing an additional methylene group in between the glycosidic linkage, were synthesized by utilizing 4-C-hydroxymethyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside as the glycosyl donor. A kinetic study was undertaken to assess the hydrolytic stabilities of these new disaccharide analogues toward acid-catalyzed hydrolysis, at 60 degrees C and 70 degrees C. The studies showed that the disaccharide analogues were stable, by an order of magnitude, than naturally-occurring disaccharides, such as, cellobiose, lactose, and maltose. The first order rate constants were lower than that of methyl glycosides and the trend of hydrolysis rate constants followed that of naturally-occurring disaccharides. alpha-Anomer showed faster hydrolysis than the beta-anomer and the presence of axial hydroxyl group also led to faster hydrolysis among the disaccharide analogues. Energy minimized structures, derived through molecular modeling, showed that dihedral angles around the glycosidic bond in disaccharide analogues were nearly similar to that of naturally-occurring disaccharides. PEFCs employing Nafion-silica (Nafion-SiO2) and Nafion-mesoporous zirconium phosphate (Nafion-MZP) composite membranes are subjected to accelerated-durability test at 100 degrees C and 15% relative humidity (RH) at open-circuit voltage (OCV) for 50 h and performance compared with the PEFC employing pristine Nafion-1135 membrane. PEFCs with composite membranes sustain the operating voltage better with fluoride-ion-emission rate at least an order of magnitude lower than PEFC with pristine Nafion-1135 membrane. Reduced gas-crossover, fast fuel-cell-reaction kinetics and superior performance of the PEFCs with Nafion-SiO2 and Nafion-MZP composite membranes in relation to the PEFC with pristine Nafion-1135 membrane support the long-term operational usage of the former in PEFCs. An 8-cell PEFC stack employing Nafion-SiO2 composite membrane is also assembled and successfully operated at 60 degrees C without external humidification.

The effect of gem-dialkyl substituents on the backbone conformations of beta-amino acid residues in peptides has been investigated by using four model peptides: Boc-Xxx-beta 2,2Ac6c(1-aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (1), Phe (2); Boc=tert-butyloxycarbonyl) and Boc-Xxx-beta 3,3Ac6c(1-aminocyclohexaneacetic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (3), Phe (4)). Tetrasubstituted carbon atoms restrict the ranges of stereochemically allowed conformations about flanking single bonds. The crystal structure of Boc-Leu-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (1) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn in the a beta-hybrid sequence. The observed torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to-30 degrees), beta(similar to-90 degrees, similar to 60 degrees, similar to-90 degrees)) corresponded to a C11 helical turn, which was a backbone-expanded analogue of the type III beta turn in aa sequences. The crystal structure of the peptide Boc-Phe-beta 3,3Ac6c-NHMe (4) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn with distinctly different backbone torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to 120 degrees), beta(similar to 60 degrees, ?60 degrees, similar to-60 degrees)), which corresponded to a backbone-expanded analogue of the type II beta turn observed in aa sequences. In peptide 4, the two molecules in the asymmetric unit adopted backbone torsion angles of opposite signs. In one of the molecules, the Phe residue adopted an unfavorable backbone conformation, with the energetic penalty being offset by a favorable aromatic interaction between proximal molecules in the crystal. NMR spectroscopy studies provided evidence for the maintenance of folded structures in solution in these a beta-hybrid sequences.

This article aims to obtain damage-tolerant designs with minimum weight for a laminated composite structure using genetic algorithm. Damage tolerance due to impacts in a laminated composite structure is enhanced by dispersing the plies such that too many adjacent plies do not have the same angle. Weight of the structure is minimized and the Tsai-Wu failure criterion is considered for the safe design. Design variables considered are the number of plies and ply orientation. The influence of dispersed ply angles on the weight of the structure for a given loading conditions is studied by varying the angles in the range of 0 degrees-45 degrees, 0 degrees-60 degrees and 0 degrees-90 degrees at intervals of 5 degrees and by using specific ply angles tailored to loading conditions. A comparison study is carried out between the conventional stacking sequence and the stacking sequence with dispersed ply angles for damage-tolerant weight minimization and some useful designs are obtained. Unconventional stacking sequence is more damage tolerant than the conventional stacking sequence is demonstrated by performing a finite element analysis under both tensile as well as compressive loading conditions. Moreover, a new mathematical function called the dispersion function is proposed to measure the dispersion of ply angles in a laminate. The approach for dispersing ply angles to achieve damage tolerance is especially suited for composite material design space which has multiple local minima.

This article deals with the durability of 2D woven mat carbon/polyester, glass/isopolyester, and gel-coated glass/isopolyester reinforced composites under hygrothermic conditions with regard to marine applications. The test coupons were exposed to 60 degrees C and 70 degrees C at 95% RH for a maximum duration of 100 h. The samples were periodically withdrawn and weighed for moisture absorption and tested for the degradation in the mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength, and Young's modulus and flexural modulus. Carbon/isopolyester-based specimens showed greater stability with respect to degradation in the mechanical properties than the glass/isopolyester/gel coat- and glass/isopolyester-based specimens. Glass/isopolyester exhibited the maximum moisture absorption, whereas the minimum moisture absorption was found in glass/isopolyester/gel coat. Diffusion coefficient (D) was found to be the highest for glass/isopolyester and the lowest for glass/isopolyester/gel coat, based on the Fick's law of diffusion. Diffusion coefficient increases with the increase in temperature for all the specimens. Microstructure study of fractured specimens was carried out using scanning electron microscope to compare matrix/fiber debonding and matrix-degradation of fiber-reinforced polymer composites.

Lattice oxygen of TiO2 is activated by the substitution of Pd ion in its lattice. Ti1-xPdxO2-x (x = 0.01-0.03) have been synthesized by solution combustion method crystallizing in anatase TiO2 structure. Pd is in +2 oxidation state and Ti is in +4 oxidation state in the catalyst. Pd is more ionic in TiO2 lattice compared to Pd in PdO. Oxygen storage capacity defined by ``amount of oxygen that is used reversibly to oxidize CO'' is as high as 5100 mu mol/g of Ti0.97Pd0.03O1.97. Oxygen is extracted by CO to CO2 in absence of feed oxygen even at room temperature which is more than 20 times compared to pure TiO2. Rate of CO oxidation is 2.75 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) at 60 degrees C over Ti0.97Pd0.03O1.97 and C2H2 gets oxidized to CO2 and H2O at room temperature. Catalyst is not poisoned on long time operation of the reactor. Such high catalytic activity is due to activated lattice oxygen created by the substitution of Pd ion as seen from first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with 96 atom supercells of Ti32O64, Ti31Pd1O63, Ti30Pd2O62, and Ti29Pd3O61. The compounds crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with Pd2+ ion in nearly square planar geometry and TiO6 octahedra are distorted by the creation of weakly bound oxygens. Structural analysis of Ti31Pd1O63 which is close to 3% Pd ion substituted TiO2 shows that oxygens associated with both Ti and Pd ions in the lattice show bond valence sum of 1.87, a low value characteristic of weak oxygen in the lattice compared to oxygens with valence 2 and above in the same lattice. Exact positions of activated oxygens have been identified in the lattice from DFT calculations.

Organic plastic crystalline soft matter ion conductors are interesting alternatives to liquid electrolytes in electrochemical storage devices such as Lithium-ion batteries. The solvent dynamics plays a major role in determining the ion transport in plastic crystalline ion conductors. We present here an analysis of the frequency-dependent ionic conductivity of succinonitrile-based plastic crystalline ion conductors at varying salt composition (0.005 to 1 M) and temperature (-20 to 60 degrees C) using time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). The main motivation of the work has been to establish comprehensive insight into the ion transport mechanism from a single method viz, impedance spectroscopy rather than employing cluster of different characterization methods probing various length and time scales. The TTSP remarkably aids in explicit identification of the extent of the roles of solvent dynamics and ion-ion interactions on the effective conductivity of the orientationally disordered plastic crystalline ion conductors.

Constant stress accelerated ageing experiments were conducted on unfilled epoxy and epoxy alumina nanocomposites with different filler loadings of 0.1, 1 and 5 wt%. Electrical (6 kV/mm), thermal (60 degrees C) and combined electrothermal (6 kV/mm and 60 degrees C) ageing experiments were performed for a duration of 250 h. The leakage current through the samples were continuously monitored and the variation in the tan delta values with ageing duration was also monitored. It was observed that the increase in the tan delta value with ageing duration was less for the epoxy alumina nanocomposites as compared to the unfilled epoxy. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements were performed on the samples before and after the ageing in the frequency range of 10(-2) to 10(6) Hz. The permittivity and tan delta values were found to increase in the low frequency range. The volume resistivity of unfilled epoxy and epoxy alumina nanocomposites were also measured before and after the ageing. The volume resistivity improved marginally for the thermally aged samples, but reduced for the electrically aged and the electrothermally aged samples. The decrease in the value of volume resistivity was more for the multistress aged unfilled epoxy samples as compared to the multistress aged epoxy alumina nanocomposites. It was also observed that the unfilled epoxy samples having a higher value of tan delta failed first. The time to failure of the samples showed an increasing trend with an increase in the nano filler loading of epoxy alumina nanocomposites.

This paper studies the effect of frequency of base shaking on the dynamic response of unreinforced and reinforced soil slopes through a series of shaking table tests. Slopes were constructed using clayey sand and geogrids were used for reinforcing the slopes. Two different slope angles 45 degrees and 60 degrees were used in tests and the quantity and location of reinforcement is varied in different tests. Acceleration of shaking is kept constant as 0.3 g in all the tests to maximize the response and the frequency of shaking was 2 Hz, 5 Hz and 7 Hz in different tests. The slope is instrumented with ultrasonic displacement sensors and accelerometers at different elevations. The response of different slopes is compared in terms of the deformation of the slope and acceleration amplifications measured at different elevations. It is observed that the displacements at all elevations increased with increase in frequency for all slopes, whereas the effect of frequency on acceleration amplifications is not significant for reinforced slopes. Results showed that the acceleration and displacement response is not increasing proportionately with the increase in the frequency, suggesting that the role of frequency in the seismic response is very important. Reinforced slopes showed lesser displacements compared to unreinforced slopes at all frequency levels. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Observations and models have shown the presence of intraseasonal fluctuations in 20-30-day and 10-20-day bands in the equatorial Indian Ocean west of 60 degrees E (WEIO). Their spatial and temporal structures characterize them as Yanai waves, which we label low-frequency (LFYW) and high-frequency (HFYW) Yanai waves, respectively. We explore the dynamics of these intraseasonal signals, using an ocean general circulation model (Modular Ocean Model) and a linear, continuously stratified model. Yanai waves are forced by the meridional wind tau(y) everywhere in the WEIO most strongly during the monsoon seasons. They are forced both directly in the interior ocean and by reflection of the interior response from the western boundary; interference between the interior and boundary responses results in a complex surface pattern that propagates eastward and has nodes. Yanai waves are also forced by instabilities primarily during June/July in a region offshore from the western boundary (52-55 degrees E). At that time, eddies, generated by barotropic instability of the Southern Gyre, are advected southward to the equator. There, they generate a westward-propagating, cross-equatorial flow field, v(eq), with a wave number/frequency spectrum that fits the dispersion relation of a number of Yanai waves, and these waves are efficiently excited. Typically, Yanai waves associated with several baroclinic modes are excited by both wind and eddy forcing; and typically, they superpose to create beams that carry energy vertically and eastward along ray paths. The same processes generate LFYWs and HFYWs, and hence, their responses are similar; differences are traceable to the property that HFYWs have longer wavelengths than LFYWs for each baroclinic mode.

Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 and Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 have been synthesized by a solution combustion method using alanine and glycine as the fuels, respectively. Both crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with 15 nm average crystallite size. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed Pt ions are in the 2+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O1.97 (alanine) and 4+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O2 (glycine). The rate of CO oxidation occurring over Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 (0.76 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)) is similar to 10, times more than that over Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 at 60 degrees C (0.08 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)). A large shift in 100% hydrocarbons conversion to lower temperature was observed for Pt2+ ion-substituted TiO2 relative 10 that for Pt4+ ion-substituted TiO2. After reoxidation of the reduced compound by H-2 as well as CO, Pt ions are stabilized in mixed valences, 2+ and 4+ states. The role of oxide ion vacancy has been demonstrated by CO oxidation and H-2 + O-2 recombination reactions in the presence and absence of O-2. We analyze the activated lattice oxygens upon substitution of Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions in TiO2, using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with supercells of Ti31Pt1O63, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt2+ ion substitution and Ti31Pt1O64, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt4+ ion substitution in TiO2. We find that the local structure of Pt2+ ion has a distorted square planar geometry and that of Pt4+ ion has an octahedral geometry similar to that of Ti4+ ion in pure TiO2. The change in coordination of Pt2+ ion gives rise to weakly bonded oxygens, and these oxygens are involved in high rates of catalytic reaction. Thus, the high catalytic activity results from synergistic roles of Pt2+ ion and oxide ion vacancy and weakly bonded lattice oxygen.

Reaction of cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(2-diethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol) in presence of sodium azide and sodium thiocyanate yields two complexes Co( L)( HL)(N-3)]center dot ClO4 ( 1) and Co( L)( HL)(NCS)] center dot ClO4 ( 2); both being characterized by different physicochemical methods. Crystal structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction while that of 2 was reported earlier. In 1, the central cobalt(III) adopts slightly distorted octahedral geometry with same donor set to that of 2. Catalytic efficacy of the complexes towards epoxidation of different alkenes under aerobic condition were investigated in homogeneous medium which reveals that 1 is better catalyst than 2 with respect to alkene oxidation, reflected from the turn over frequencies (TOF) measured at an optimum temperature of 60 degrees C in acetonitrile. Accelerated electrothermal aging tests were conducted at a constant temperature of 60 degrees C and at different stress levels of 6 kV/mm, 7 kV/mm and 8 kV/mm on unfilled epoxy and epoxy filled with 5 wt% of nano alumina. The leakage current through the samples were continuously monitored and the variation in tan delta values with aging duration was monitored to predict the impending failure and the time to failure of the samples. It is observed that the time to failure of epoxy alumina nanocomposite samples is significantly higher as compared to the unfilled epoxy. Data from the experiments has been analyzed graphically by plotting the Weibull probability and theoretically by the linear least square regression analysis. The characteristic life obtained from the least square regression analysis has been used to plot the inverse power law curve. From the inverse power law curve, the life of the epoxy insulation with and without nanofiller loading at a stress level of 3 kV/mm, i.e. within the midrange of the design stress level of rotating machine insulation, has been obtained by extrapolation. It is observed that the life of epoxy alumina nanocomposite of 5 wt% filler loading is nine times higher than that of the unfilled epoxy.

The present work presents the results of experimental investigation of semi-solid rheocasting of A356 Al alloy using a cooling slope. The experiments have been carried out following Taguchi method of parameter design (orthogonal array of L-9 experiments). Four key process variables (slope angle, pouring temperature, wall temperature, and length of travel of the melt) at three different levels have been considered for the present experimentation. Regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) has also been performed to develop a mathematical model for degree of sphericity evolution of primary alpha-Al phase and to find the significance and percentage contribution of each process variable towards the final outcome of degree of sphericity, respectively. The best processing condition has been identified for optimum degree of sphericity (0.83) as A(3), B-3, C-2, D-1 i.e., slope angle of 60 degrees, pouring temperature of 650 degrees C, wall temperature 60 degrees C, and 500 mm length of travel of the melt, based on mean response and signal to noise ratio (SNR). ANOVA results shows that the length of travel has maximum impact on degree of sphericity evolution. The predicted sphericity obtained from the developed regression model and the values obtained experimentally are found to be in good agreement with each other. The sphericity values obtained from confirmation experiment, performed at 95% confidence level, ensures that the optimum result is correct and also the confirmation experiment values are within permissible limits.
