An atmospheric radio noise burst represents the radiation received from one complete lightning flash at the frequency to which a receiver is tuned and within the receiver bandwidth. At tropical latitudes, the principal source of interference in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10 MHz is the burst form of atmospheric radio noise. The structure of a burst shows several approximately rectangular pulses of random amplitude, duration and frequency of recurrence. The influence of the noise on data communication can only be examined when the value of the number of pulses crossing a certain amplitude threshold per unit time of the noise burst is known. A pulse rate counter designed for this purpose has been used at Bangalore (12°58′N, 77°35′E) to investigate the pulse characteristics of noise bursts at 3 MHz with a receiver bandwidth of 3.3 kHz/6d B. The results show that the number of pulses lying in the amplitude range between peak and quasi-peak values of the noise bursts and the burst duration corresponding to these pulses follow log normal distributions. The pulse rates deduced therefrom show certain correlation between the number of pulses and the duration of the noise burst. The results are discussed with a view to furnish necessary information for data communication.

IH NMR studies at 270 MHz on the synthetic alamethicin fragments Z-Aib-Pro-Aib-Ala-Aib-Ala-OMe (1-6), Boc-Gln-Aib-Val-Aib-Gly-Leu-Aib-OMe (7-1 3), Boc-Leu-Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-OMe (1 2-16), and Boc-Gly-Leu- Aib-Pro-Val-Aib-OMe (1 1-16) have been carried out in CDC13 and (CD3)2S0. The intramolecularly hydrogen bonded amide hydrogens in these peptides have been delineated by using solvent titration experiments and temperature coefficientsof NH chemical shifts in (CD3)+30. All the peptides adopt highly folded structures, characterized by intramolecular 4 - 1 hydrogen bonds. The 1-6 fragment adopts a 310 helical conformation with four hydrogen bonds, in agreement with earlier studies (Rao, Ch. P., Nagaraj, R., Rao, C. N. R., & Balaram, P. Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7/Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3/Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7 tunable multilayer thin film has been fabricated by pulsed laser ablation and characterized. Phase composition and microstructure of multilayer films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The film has very smooth surface with RMS roughness of 1.5-2nm and grain size of 100-150 nm. Total film thickness has been measure to be 375 nm. The BZN thin films at 300 K, on Pt(1 1 1)/SiO2/Si substrate showed zero-field dielectric constant of 105 and dielectric loss tangent of 0.002 at frequency of 0.1 MHz. Thin films annealed at 700 degrees C shows the dielectric tunability of 18% with biasing field 500 kV/cm at 0.1 MHz. The multilayer thin film shows nonferroelectric behavior at room temperature. The good physical and electrical properties of multilayer thin films make them promising candidate for tunable microwave device applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We describe the synthesis structures and dielectric properties of new perovskite oxides of the formula (Ba3MTiMO9)-Ti-III-O-V for M-III = Fe Ga Y Lu and M-V = Nb Ta Sb While M-V = Nb and Ta oxides adopt disordered/partially ordered 3C perovskite structures where M-III/Ti/M-V metal-oxygen octahedra are corner connected the M-V = Sb oxides show a distinct preference for the 6H structure where Sb-V/Ti-IV metal-oxygen octahedra share a common face forming (Sb Ti)O-9 dimers that are corner-connected to the (MO6)-O-III octahedra The preference of antimony oxides (Sb-V 4d(10)) for the 6H structure which arises from a special Sb-V-O chemical bonding that tends to avoid linear Sb-O-Sb linkages unlike Nb-V/Ta-V d(0) atoms which prefer similar to 180 degrees Nb/Ta-O-Nb/Ta linkages - is consistent with the crystal chemistry of M-V-O oxides in general The dielectric properties reveal a significant difference among Mill members All the oxides with the 3C structure excepting those with Mill = Fe show a normal low loss dielectric behaviour with epsilon = 20-60 in the temperature range 50-400 degrees C the M-III = Fe members with this structure (M-V = Nb Ta) display a relaxor-like ferroelectric behaviour with large E values at frequencies <= 1 MHz (50-500 degrees C) (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS All rights reserved

We present observations of the C270alpha carbon recombination line, 21 cm neutral hydrogen line and (CO)-C-12 (J = 1 --> 0) molecular line toward Cas A. A comparison of the distribution of recombination line optical depths over the face of Cas A with that of H I optical depths and molecular line emission favors the association of C270alpha regions with H I rather than molecular clouds. The association makes it possible to self-consistently determine several physical parameters of the clouds by combining the recombination line and 21 cm H I measurements.

We present observations of low-frequency recombination lines of carbon toward Cas A near 34.5 MHz (n similar to 575) using the Gauribidanur radio telescope and near 560 MHz (n similar to 225) and 770 MHz (n similar to 205) using the NRAO 140 foot (43 m) telescope in Greenbank. We also present high angular resolution (1') observations of the C270 alpha line near 332 MHz using the Very Large Array in B-configuration. A high signal-to-noise ratio spectrum is obtained at 34.5 MHz, which clearly shows a Voigt profile with distinct Lorentzian wings, resulting from significant pressure and radiation broadening at such high quantum numbers. The emission lines detected near 332, 550, and 770 MHz, on the other hand, are narrow and essentially Doppler-broadened. The measured Lorentzian width at 34.5 MHz constrains the allowed combinations of radiation temperature, electron density, and electron temperature in the line-forming region. Radiation broadening at 34.5 MHz places a lower limit of 115 pc on the separation between Cas A and the line-forming clouds. Modeling the variation in the integrated line-to-continuum ratio with frequency indicates that the region is likely to be associated with the cold atomic hydrogen component of the interstellar medium, and the physical properties of this region are likely to be T-e = 75 K, n(e) = 0.02 cm(-3), T-R100 = 3200 K, and n(H) T-e = 10,000 cm(-3) K. Comparison of the distribution of the C270 alpha recombination line emission across Cas A with that of (CO)-C-12 and H I also supports the above conclusion.

This paper describes a dynamic voltage frequency control scheme for a 256 X 64 SRAM block for reducing the energy in active mode and stand-by mode. The DVFM control system monitors the external clock and changes the supply voltage and the body bias so as to achieve a significant reduction in energy. The behavioral model of the proposed DVFM control system algorithm is described and simulated in HDL using delay and energy parameters obtained through SPICE simulation. The frequency range dictated by an external controller is 100 MHz to I GHz. The supply voltage of the complete memory system is varied in steps of 50 mV over the range of 500 mV to IV. The threshold voltage range of operation is plusmn100 mV around the nominal value, achieving 83.4% energy reduction in the active mode and 86.7% in the stand-by mode. This paper also proposes a energy replica that is used in the energy monitor subsystem of the DVFM system.

X-ray powder diffraction along with differential thermal analysis carried out on the as-quenched samples in the 3BaO–3TiO2–B2O3 system confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. The dielectric constants in the 1 kHz–1 MHz frequency range were measured as a function of temperature (323–748 K). The dielectric constant and loss were found to be frequency independent in the 323–473 K temperature range. The temperature coefficient of dielectric constant was estimated using Havinga’s formula and found to be 16 ppm K−1. The electrical relaxation was rationalized using the electric modulus formalism. The dielectric constant and loss were 17±0.5 and 0.005±0.001, respectively at 323 K in the 1 kHz–1 MHz frequency range which may be of considerable interest to capacitor industry.

Although some researchers have published friction and wear data of Plasma Nitride (PN) coatings, the tribological behavior of PN/PN Pairs in high vacuum environment has not been published so far In order to bridge this knowledge gap, tribological tests under dry conditions have been conducted on PN/PN Pairs for varying temperatures of 25, 200, 400 and 500 degrees C in high vacuum (1.6 x 10(-4) bar) environment. The PN coatings showed good wear resistance layer on the ring surface. The PN coatings were removed only from the pin surface for all the tests since it contacts at a point. The friction and wear were low at lower temperatures and it eliminated adhesion between the contact surfaces until the coating was completely removed from the pin surface. We report our search for and a possible detection of periodic radio pulses at 34.5 MHz from the Fermi Large Area Telescope pulsar J1732-3131. The candidate detection has been possible in only one of the many sessions of observations made with the low-frequency array at Gauribidanur, India, when the otherwise radio weak pulsar may have apparently brightened many folds. The candidate dispersion measure along the sight line, based on the broad periodic profiles from 20min of data, is estimated to be 15.44 ± 0.32 pccc -1. We present the details of our periodic and single-pulse search, and discuss the results and their implications relevant to both, the pulsar and the intervening medium. © 2012 RAS.

BiEuO3 (BE) and BiGdO3 (BG) are synthesized by the solid-state reaction technique. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data shows that the samples are crystallized in cubic phase at room temperature having Fm3m symmetry with the lattice parameters of 5.4925(2) and 5.4712(2) A for BE and BG, respectively. Raman spectra of the samples are investigated to obtain the phonon modes of the samples. The dielectric properties of the samples are investigated in the frequency range from 42 Hz to 1.1 MHz and in the temperature range from 303 K to 673 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of impedance is performed assuming a distribution of relaxation times as confirmed by the Cole-Cole plots. The frequency-dependent maxima in the loss tangent are found to obey an Arrhenius law with activation energy similar to 1 eV for both the samples. The frequency-dependent electrical data are also analyzed in the framework of conductivity formalism. Magnetization of the samples are measured under the field cooled (EC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) modes in the temperature range from 5 K to 300 K applying a magnetic Field of 500 Oe. The FC and ZFC susceptibilities show that BE is a Van Vleck paramagnetic material with antiferromagnetic coupling at low temperature whereas BG is an anti-ferromagnetic system. The results are substantiated by the M-11 loops of the materials taken at 5 K in the ZFC mode. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Giant grained (42 mu m) translucent Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 ceramic was fabricated by conventional sintering technique using the powders obtained via solid state reaction route. These samples were confirmed to possess tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (P4bm) at room temperature. The scanning electron microscopy established the average grain size to be close to 20 mu m. The photoluminescence studies carried out on these ceramics indicated sharp emission bands around 433 and 578 nm at an excitation wavelength of 350 nm which were attributed to band-edge emission as the band gap was 2.76 eV determined by Kubelka-Munk function. The dielectric properties of these ceramics were studied over wide frequency range (100-1 MHz) at room temperature. The decrease in dielectric constant with frequency could be explained on the basis of Koops theory. The dielectric constant and the loss were found to decrease with increasing frequency. The Curie temperature was confirmed to be similar to 370 A degrees C based on the dielectric anomaly observed when these measurements were carried out over a temperature range of 30-500 A degrees C. This shows a deviation from Curie-Weiss behaviour and hence an indicator of the occurrence of disordering in the system, the gamma = 1.23 which confirms the diffuse ferroelectric transition. These ceramics at room temperature exhibited P-E hysteresis loops, though not well saturated akin to that of their single crystalline counterparts. These are the suitable properties for ferroelectric random access memory applications.

This paper reports the design and electrical characterization of a micromechanical disk resonator fabricated in single crystal silicon using a foundry SOI micromachining process. The microresonator has been selectively excited in the radial extensional and the wine glass modes by reversing the polarity of the DC bias voltage applied on selected drive electrodes around the resonant structure. The quality factor of the resonator vibrating in the radial contour mode was 8000 at a resonant frequency of 6.34 MHz at pressure below 10 mTorr vacuum. The highest measured quality factor of the resonator in the wine glass resonant mode was 1.9 × 106 using a DC bias voltage of 20 V at about the same pressure in vacuum; the resonant frequency was 5.43 MHz and the lowest motional resistance measured was approximately 17 kΩ using a DC bias voltage of 60 V applied across 2.7 μm actuation gaps. This corresponds to a resonant frequency-quality factor (f-Q) product of 1.02 × 1013, among the highest reported for single crystal silicon microresonators, and on par with the best quartz crystal resonators. The quality factor for the wine glass mode in air was approximately 10,000. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
