The (2)H(d,p)(3)H and (2)H(d,n)(3)He reactions have been indirectly studied by means of the Trojan Horse Method applied to the quasi-free (2)H((3)He, p(3)H)(1)H (2)H((3)He, n(3)He)(1)H reaction at 18 MeV of beam energy. This is the first experiment where the spectator (here (1)H) has been detected in coincidence with the charged participant, avoiding the limitations of standard neutron detectors. The d - d relative energy has been measured from 1.5 MeV down to 2 keV, at center of mass angles from 40A degrees to 170A degrees. Indirect angular distributions are compared with the direct behaviour in the overlapping regions.

A reliable and fast sensor for in vitro evaluation of solar protection factors (SPFs) of cosmetic products, based on the photobleaching kinetics of a nanocrystalline TiO(2)/dye UV-dosimeter, has been devised. The accuracy, robustness and suitability of the new device was demonstrated by the excellent matching of the predicted and the in vivo results up to SPF 70, for four standard samples analyzed in blind. These results strongly suggest that our device can be useful for routine SPF evaluation in laboratories devoted to the development or production of cosmetic formulations, since the conventional in vitro methods tend to exhibit unacceptably high errors above SPF similar to 30 and the conventional in vivo methods tend to be expensive and exceedingly time consuming. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare splinting techniques for impression copings of osseointegrated implants with different angulations.Materials and Methods: Replicas (N = 24) of a metal matrix (control) containing two implants at 90 degrees and 65 degrees in relation to the horizontal surface were obtained by using four impression techniques: Technique 1 (T1), direct technique with square copings without union in open trays; Technique 2 (T2), square copings splinted with dental floss and autopolymerizing acrylic resin; Technique 3 (T3), square copings splinted with dental floss and autopolymerizing acrylic resin, sectioned and splinted again with autopolymerizing acrylic resin; Technique 4 (T4), square copings splinted with prefabricated acrylic resin bar. The impression material was polyether. The replicas were individually scanned to capture the images, which were assessed in a graphic computation program. The program allowed the angulation between the bases of the replicas and the reading screws to be measured. The images of the replicas were compared with the matrix image (control), and the differences in angulations from the control image were calculated. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test for comparisons (p < 0.05) were used for statistical analysis. Results: All groups showed significant differences in the implant angulations in comparison with the control group (p < 0.05). Group T1 showed the highest difference (1.019 degrees) followed by groups T2 (0.747 degrees), T3 (0.516 degrees), and T4 (0.325 degrees), which showed the lowest angular alteration compared to the control group. There were significant differences between inclined and straight implants in all the groups, except in group T4.Conclusions: Based on the results, the splinting of pick-up impression copings is indicated for osseointegrated implant impressions. The square copings splinted with a prefabricated acrylic resin bar presented the best results among the pick-up impression techniques evaluated in this study.

This study investigated GH secretion after clonidine (alpha-2 adrenergic agonist) treatment in pre-pubertal Nelore heifers. Clonidine (10 mg/kg, IV, 15 min samples for 4 h) was administrated in the same Nelore heifers at eight (n = 4), 12 (n = 5) and 15 (n = 4) months of age. The GH concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay (sensivity = 0.25 ng/mL, CV = 16%). At eight months, clonidine increased GH average concentration, total area of peaks, the total area of GH secretion and increased peak amplitude and reduced time to onset of peak (P < 0.05). At 15 months, the administration of clonidine increased the GH average concentration and at 12 months the increased occurred only in restricted intervals (P < 0.05). Clonidine injection stimulated GH secretion in prepubertal heifers and this effect was more evident in Nelore heifers at eight months compared to 12 and 15 months of age.

The thermoluminescence intensity as a function of gamma-ray dose of the 325 degreesC peak, in quartz grains extracted from sea sediments and from fluvial aeolic dunes, is studied. It is found that the response curve at low doses has a concavity directed opposite to that of quartz grains extracted from archaeological potteries. To explain this behavior a model is proposed here based on oxygen vacancies and [AlO4/h](0) centers. The experimentally observed ESR intensity of E-I'-centers as a function of radiation dose can also be explained by this model.

Integrins are a family of transmembrane adhesion receptors that might transduce signals from the extracellular matrix into the inside of cells after ligand binding. In order to investigate whether beta3 integrins expressed in tumor cells might mediate such outside-in signaling, human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells that were stably transfected with either beta3 integrin or mock-transfected were investigated in a matrigel degradation assay and a grafting experiment was performed on the developing chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). After cultivation on matrigel for time periods between one and five days, more matrigel was digested in the wells in which beta3 integrin expressing cells were incubated than in wells of mock-transfected cells. Furthermore, extracts of beta3 integrin expressing cells contained higher levels of MMP-2 protein as determined by immunoblotting and more MMP-2 associated gelatinase activity as detected by zymography than extracts of mock-transfected cells. Matrigel degradation and gelatinase activity as well as MMP-2 expression were elevated when beta3 integrin expressing cells were incubated in the presence of the RGD peptide (mimicking an integrin ligand). After grafting on 10 day-old embryonic chicken CAM for three to five days, beta3 integrin expressing cells assembled in spheroids showed higher rates of spreading on the CAM surface and CAM invasion as well as a significant MMP-2 up-regulation compared to mock-transfected cells. The results from the in vivo and in vitro experiments allow the conclusion that the presence of beta3 integrin in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells induced an increased MMP-2 expression and activity that might contribute to the enhanced invasive potential observed.

BACKGROUND Most guidelines recommend at least 2-cm excision margin for melanomas thicker than 2 mm. OBJECTIVE We evaluated whether 1- or 2-cm excision margins for melanoma (>2 mm) result in different outcomes. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study on patients with melanomas (>2 mm) who underwent tumor excision with 1-cm (228 patients) or 2-cm (97 patients) margins to investigate presence of local recurrences, locoregional and distant metastases, and disease-free and overall survival. RESULTS In all, 325 patients with mean age of 61.84 years and Breslow thickness of 4.36 mm were considered for the study with a median follow-up of 1852 days (1995-2012). There was no significant difference in the frequency of locoregional and distant metastasis between the 2 groups (P = .311 and .571). The survival analysis showed no differences for disease-free (P = .800; hazard ratio 0.948; 95% confidence interval 0.627-1.433) and overall (P = .951; hazard ratio 1.018; 95% confidence interval 0.575-1.803) survival. LIMITATIONS The study was not prospectively randomized. CONCLUSIONS Our study did not show any significant differences in important outcome parameters such as local or distant metastases and overall survival. A prospective study testing 1- versus 2-cm excision margin is warranted.

Type 2 diabetes has grown to epidemic proportions in the U.S., and its prevalence has been steadily increasing in Texas. The physical activity levels in the population have remained low despite it being one of the primary preventive strategies for type 2 diabetes. The objectives of this study were to estimate the direct medical costs of type 2 diabetes attributable to not meeting physical activity Guidelines and to physical inactivity in the U.S. and Texas in 2007. This was a cross sectional study that used physical activity prevalence data from the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to estimate the population attributable risk percentage (PAR%) for type 2 diabetes. These data were combined with the prevalence and cost data of type 2 diabetes to estimate the cost of type 2 diabetes attributable to not meeting Guidelines and to inactivity in the U.S. and Texas in 2007.^ The cost of type 2 diabetes in the U.S. in 2007, attributable to not meeting physical activity Guidelines was estimated to be $13.29 billion, and that attributable to physical inactivity (no leisure time physical activity) was estimated to be $3.32 billion. Depending on various assumptions, these estimates ranged from $7.61 billion to $41.48 billion for not meeting Guidelines, and $1.90 billion to $13.20 billion for physical inactivity in the U.S. in 2007. The cost of type 2 diabetes in Texas in 2007 attributable to not meeting physical activity Guidelines was estimated to be $1.15 billion, and that attributable to physical inactivity (no leisure time physical activity) was estimated to be $325 million. Depending on various assumptions, these estimates ranged from $800 million to $3.47 billion for not meeting Guidelines, and $186 million to $1.28 billion for physical inactivity in Texas in 2007. These results illustrate how much money could be saved annually just in terms of type 2 diabetes cost in the U.S. and Texas, if the entire adult population was active enough to meet physical activity Guidelines. Physical activity promotion, particularly at the environmental and policy level should be a priority in the population. ^

Tropical south-western Pacific temperatures are of vital importance to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), but the role of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the growth of the GBR since the Last Glacial Maximum remains largely unknown. Here we present records of Sr/Ca and d18O for Last Glacial Maximum and deglacial corals that show a considerably steeper meridional SST gradient than the present day in the central GBR. We find a 1-2 °C larger temperature decrease between 17° and 20°S about 20,000 to 13,000 years ago. The result is best explained by the northward expansion of cooler subtropical waters due to a weakening of the South Pacific gyre and East Australian Current. Our findings indicate that the GBR experienced substantial meridional temperature change during the last deglaciation, and serve to explain anomalous deglacial drying of northeastern Australia. Overall, the GBR developed through significant SST change and may be more resilient than previously thought.
