Characterizing Pb mobilization from upland soils to streams using (206)Pb/(207)Pb isotopic ratios

Anthropogenically deposited lead (Pb) binds efficiently to soil organic matter, which can be mobilized through hydrologically mediated mechanisms, with implications for ecological and potable quality of receiving waters. Lead isotopic ((206)Pb/(207)Pb) ratios change down peat profiles as a consequence of long-term temporal variation in depositional sources, each with distinctive isotopic signatures. This study characterizes differential Pb transport mechanisms from deposition to streams at two small catchments with contrasting soil types in upland Wales, U.K., by determining Pb concentrations and (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios from soil core profiles, interstitial pore waters, and stream water. Hydrological characteristics of soils are instrumental in determining the location in soil profiles of exported Pb and hence concentration and (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios in surface waters. The highest Pb concentrations from near-surface soils are mobilized, concomitant with high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) exports, from hydrologically responsive peat soils with preferential shallow subsurface flows, leading to increased Pb concentrations in stream water and isotopic signatures more closely resembling recently deposited Pb. In more minerogenic soils, percolation of water allows Pb, bound to DOC, to be retained in mineral horizons and combined with other groundwater sources, resulting in Pb being transported from throughout the profile with a more geogenic isotopic signature. This study shows that (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios can enhance our understanding of the provenances and transport mechanisms of Pb and potentially organic matter within upland soils.

Burning books and burying scholars: on the policies of the short-lived Qin Dynasty in ancient China (221-207 BC)

In 221 BC, the battle-hardened warriors of the Qin state, the western frontier state and the most aggressive of the Warring States, subjugated the last of its rival states, thus establishing the Qin dynasty, with itscapital in Xianyang, near the modern Xi’an. The Qin dynasty is customarily regarded by Chinese and Western scholars as the beginning of a new age – the Chinese empire – that lasted until 1911 AD. The dynasty lasted only fifteen years. This study examines the main policies of the Qin dynasty and seeks to address the question what brought the quick downfall of the Qin rule. This paper takes the cultural and political contexts carefully into consideration, and argues that the Qin annexation of its rival states might be better understood as an end of an old era as much as a beginning of a new epoch.

RB25-207 The Spindle-Tuber Disease: One Cause of "Run-Out" Seed Potatoes

The spindle-tuber disease is one of the most prevalent potato diseases occurring in all parts of Nebraska. It has been found in all varieties tested. It does much damage to the potato crop, in that it reduces the yield and injures the market quality of the potatoes. This 1925 publication discusses the spindler-tuber disease also known as "running-out" or degeneracy of seed potatoes; the distribution of the disease; effect upon yield and quality; symptoms of the different potato varieties; transmission of the disease and experiments; rate of increase of the disease; dry land versus irrigation in western Nebraska; straw mulching versus cultivation in eastern Nebraska; planting times; harvesting; and control.

Geochemistry and Pb-207/Pb-206 zircon ages of granitoids from the southern portion of the Tamboril-Santa Quiteria granitic-migmatitic complex, Ceara Central Domain, Borborema Province (NE Brazil)

The Tamboril-Santa Quiteria Complex is an important Neoproterozoic granitic-migmatitic unit from the Ceara Central Domain that developed from ca. 650 to 610 Ma. In general the granitoids range in composition from diorite to granite with predominance (up to 85%) of granitic to monzogranitic composition with biotite as the main mafic AFM phase. Geochemical and Pb-207/Pb-206 evaporation zircon geochronology studies were applied in a group of these abundant monzogranitic rocks from the region of Novo Oriente in the southern portion of the Ceara Central Domain. In this area the granitoids are weakly peraluminous biotite granitoids and deformed biotite granitoids of high-K calc-alkaline and ferroan composition, which we interpreted as primary magmas (segregated diatexites) derived from the partial melting of crustal material. The close temporal relation of this magmatism with local eclogitic and regional high temperature metamorphism in Ceara Central Domain point out to an orogenic setting, arguably emplaced during the collisional stage. Subordinate coeval juvenile mantle incursions are also present. This crustally derived magmatism is the primary product of the continental thickening that resulted from the collision between the rocks represented by the Amazonian-West African craton (Sao Luiz cratonic fragment) to the northwest and the Paleoproterozoic-Archean basement of the Borborema Province to the southeast along the Transbrasiliano tectonic corridor. Laserspektroskopie der 1s-Hyperfeinstrukturaufspaltung an wasserstoffähnlichem 207 Pb 81+

Die Messung der 1s Hyperfeinstruktur (HFS) wasserstoffähn-licher Ionen bei hoher Kernladung Z erlaubt den Test der QED in Gegenwart starker elektrischer und magnetischer Felder durchzuführen. Aufgrund der Z^3-Abhängigkeit der magnetischen Wechselwirkung liegt die 1s-HFS bei hohem Z im optischen Spektrum und kann mit der Laserspektroskopie untersucht werden.In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Grundzustands-HFS an 207Pb81+ bestimmt. Die Experimente wurden am Speicherring ESR der Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH am Elek-tronen-gekühlten Bleistrahl durchgeführt.Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit war die Entwick-lung neuer Experimentiertechniken, die es erlauben, lang-lebigen Strahlungsübergänge im nahen infraroten Spektral-bereich mit Hilfe der Fluoreszenz-Laserspektroskopie am Speicherring zu untersuchen. Der Ionenstrahl wurde in kollinearer Geometrie mit einem Nd:YAG-Laser angeregt und die Resonanz durch Doppler-Abstimmung gemessen. Der M1-Übergang der 1s HFS an 207Pb81+ liegt bei 1019,7(2) nm. Die QED-Korrekturen sind damit auf wenige Prozent genau bestimmt. Die theoretische Berechnung der QED-Korrekturen benutzt die gemessenen bzw. den Kernmodellen entnommenen Verteilungen der Kernladung und der Kernmagnetisierung. Die Unsicherheit der Kenntnis dieser Verteilungen spielt nur eine untergeordnete Rolle für die Fehler in der gerechneten QED-Korrektur. Allerdings existieren für das magnetische Moment von 207Pb zwei widersprüchliche Literaturwerte. Die Diskussion der Ergebnisse wird im Rahmen dieses Sachver-haltes geführt.Die natürliche Lebensdauer des oberen Hyperfein-Niveaus wurde mit 49,5(6,5) ms gemessen und ist mit dem Theoriewert von 52,3(2) ms verträglich. Durch präzise Lebensdauermes-sungen können QED-Korrekturen zum g-Faktor des gebundenen Elektrons getestet werden.
