The present paper reports the methods for preparing and isolating 8 kinds of 1:12 molybdenum series of heteropoly blue complexes KyHzXMo12O40 . nH2O (X=Si, P, As, Ge). The products were characterized by elemental analyses, potential titration, polarograms, cyclic voltammetry, IR spectra, visible-UV spectra, X-ray powder diffraction, XPS and P-31 NMR. The single crystal structure of 4-electron molybdenum-silicon heteropoly blue was measured and the positions of reduced molybdenum atoms were determined, i.e. they were located at Mo(3), Mo(7), Mo(8) and Mo(10). The experimental results show that the heteropoly blue remains Keggin structure. ESR spectra of heteropoly blue solids were first studied, from which it was found that the delocalization extent of 2-electron heteropoly blue and 4-electron heteropoly blue is smaller than that of 1-electron heteropoly blue. The study of thermal properties shows that the thermal stability increases with the increase of the reduction extent of heteropoly blue. The study of redox properties shows that the oxidizing power order of heteropoly blue changes in different mediums, and the polarographic half-wave voltage is found to be dependent on the electronegativity of the hetero atom linearly. It is found that the phosphorus heteropoly blue and arsenic heteropoly blue show a strong anti-acid property.

We report a study of the effect of prepulses on XUV lasing of Ne-like germanium for an irradiation geometry where approximate to 20 mm long germanium slab targets were irradiated at approximate to 1.6 x 10(13) W cm(-2) using approximate to 0.7 ns (1.06 mu m) pulses from the VULCAN glass laser. Prepulses were generated at fractional power levels of approximate to 2 x 10(-4) (low) and approximate to 2 x 10(-2) (high) and arrived on target 5 and 3.2 ns respectively in advance of the main heating pulse, For both the low and high prepulses the output of the 3p-3s, J = 0-1, line at 19.6 nm was enhanced such that the peak radiant density (J/st) for this line became greater than that for the normally stronger J = 2-1 lines at 23.2 and 23.6 nm. The J = 0-1 line, whose FWHM duration was reduced from approximate to 450 ps to approximate to 100 ps, delivered approximate to 6 x more power (W) than the average for the combined J = 2-1 lines, whose FWHM duration was approximate to 500 ps for both levels of prepulse, The higher prepulse was more effective, yielding approximate to 2 x more radiant density and approximate to 7 x more power on both the J = 0-1 and J = 2-1 transitions compared to the low prepulse case, The most dramatic observation overall was the approximate to 40 x increase of power in the J = 0-1 line for the high prepulse (approximate to 2%) case compared with the zero prepulse case. These observations, coupled with measurements of beam divergence and beam deviation through refractive bending, as well as general agreement with modelling, lead us to conclude that, for germanium, the main influence of the prepulse is (a) to increase the energy absorbed from the main pulse, (b) to increase the volume of the gain zone and (c) to relax the plasma density gradients, particularly in the J = 0-1 gain zone.

The effect of non-uniform target illumination on the soft X-ray lasing output intensity of the J=2-1 Ne-like Ge transitions as a function of length was investigated. As the degree of nonunifonnity increased with length the Ne-like Ge 23.2 and 23.6 nm J=2-1 transitions did not show exponentiation of output intensity. Using an experimentally measured gain-intensity scaling relationship these results were modelled and good qualitative agreement obtained. The model indicates that for Ge targets which are non-uniformly illuminated, even with peak to valley ratios of up to 3 efficient operation can be achieved at between 2-3x threshold intensity. Further studies of the effect of increasing the separation between the two targets of a double target geometry are also presented.

The XUV lasing output from one germanium slab target has been efficiently coupled into, and further amplified in, a second plasma produced by irradiation of a similar target from the opposite direction. The operation of such a double target was shown to be strongly dependent on the distance by which the two target surfaces were displaced. The line brightness peaked for a surface displacement of approximately 200-mu-m and it was observed that the pointing direction of one output beam could be controlled by the surface separation in an asymmetric geometry. Gain length products of approximately 16 with estimated output powers close to the megawatt level were achieved on both the 23.2 and 23.6 nm J=2-1 transitions for an optimised target configuration. Maximum effective coupling efficiencies of the individual outputs from double targets, comprising 2.2 and 1.4 cm length components, approached 100% for beams propagating from the shorter to the longer target.

A simple Langmuir probe technique has been used to measure the electron density, electron temperature, and plasma potential in the late stages (>5 mu s) of a laser ablated plasma plume. In the plasma, formed following 248 nm laser irradiation of a copper target, in vacuum at a laser fluence of 2.5 J cm(-2), electron densities of similar to 10(18) m(-3) and temperatures of similar to 0.5 eV were measured. These values are comparable with those reported previously using Faraday cup detectors and optical emission spectroscopy, respectively. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Catalase dismutes H20 2 to O2 and H20. In successive twoelectron reactions H20 2 induces both oxidation and reduction at the heme group. In the first step the protoheme prosthetic group of beef liver catalase forms compound I, in which the heme has been oxidized from Fe3+ to Fe4+=0 and a porphyrin radical has been created. Compound II is formed by the oneelectron reduction of comp I. It retains Fe4+=0 but lacks the porphyrin radical and is catalytically inert. Molecular structures are available for Escherichia coli Hydroperoxidase II, Micrococcus Iysodeiktus, Penicillium vitale and beef liver enzymes, which contain different hemes and heme pockets. In the present work, the pockets and substrate access channels of protoheme (beef liver & Micrococcus) and heme d (HPII of E. coli and Penicillium) catalases have been analysed using Quanta™ and CharmMTM molecular modeling packages on the Silicon Graphics Iris Indigo 2 computer. Experimental studies have been carried out with two catalases, HPII (and its mutants) and beef liver. Fluoride and formate' are inhibitors of both enzymes, and their binding is modulated by the heme and by distal residues N201 & H128. Both HPII and beef liver enzymes form compound I with H202 or peracetate. The reduction of beef liver enzyme compound I to II and the decay of compound II are accelerated by fluoride. The decay of compound II is also accelerated by formate, and this reagent acts as a 2-electron donor towards compound I of both enzymes. It is concluded that heme d enzymes (Penicillium and HPII of E. coli) are formed by autocatalytic transformation of protoheme in a modified pocket which contains a characteristic serine residue as well as a partially occluded heme channel. They are less active than protoheme enzymes but also do not form the inactive compound II species. Binding of peroxide as well as fluoride and formate is prevented by mutation of H128 and modulated by mutation of N201.

Element 115 is expected to be in group V-a of the periodic table and have most stable oxidation states of I and III. The oxidation state of I, which plays a minor role in bismuth chemistry, should be a major factor in 115 chemistry. This change will arise because of the large relativistic splitting of the spherically symmetric 7p_l/2 shell from the 7P_3/2 shell. Element 115 will therefore have a single 7p_3/2 electron outside a 7p^2_1/2 closed shell. The magnitude of the first ionization energy and ionic radius suggest a chemistry similar to Tl^+. Similar considerations suggest that 115^3+ will have a chemistry similar to Bi^3+. Hydrolysis will therefore be easy and relatively strongly complexing anions of strong acids will be needed in general to effect studies of complexation chemistry. Some other properties of 115 predicted are as follows: ionization potentials I 5.2 eV, II 18.1 eV, III 27.4 eV, IV 48.5 eV, 0 \rightarrow 5^+ 159 eV; heat of sublimation, 34 kcal (g-atom)^-1; atomic radius, 2.0 A; ionic radius, 115^+ 1.5 A, 115^3+ 1.0 A; entropy, 16 cal deg^-1 (g-atom)^-l (25°); standard electrode potential 115^+ |115, -1.5 V; melting and boiling points are similar to element 113.

Self-consistent relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations have been made of some lowlying electronic energies for the atoms of all elements in ground-state ds^2 electron configurations. The results indicate that, contrary to some previous estimates, the ground electronic state of atomic Lr could be in either the 5f^14 6d7s^2 or the 5f^14 7p 7s^2 electron configuration. The separation between the lowest energy level of the 5f^14 6d7s^2 configuration and the lowest energy level of the 5f^14 7p7s^2 configuration is estimated to be (0 ± 3) x 10^3 cm^-1 for atomic Lr.

We present magnetotransport studies of high-density triple quantum well samples with different barrier widths. Because of electron transitions between three occupied 2D subbands, the magneto-resistance shows magneto-intersubband oscillations whose periodicity is determined by the subband separation energies. Temperature-dependent measurements allow us to extract quantum lifetime of electrons. A theoretical consideration of the observed phenomenon is also presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Universal properties of the Coulomb interaction energy apply to all many-electron systems. Bounds on the exchange-correlation energy, in particular, are important for the construction of improved density functionals. Here we investigate one such universal property-the Lieb-Oxford lower bound-for ionic and molecular systems. In recent work [J Chem Phys 127, 054106 (2007)], we observed that for atoms and electron liquids this bound may be substantially tightened. Calculations for a few ions and molecules suggested the same tendency, but were not conclusive due to the small number of systems considered. Here we extend that analysis to many different families of ions and molecules, and find that for these, too, the bound can be empirically tightened by a similar margin as for atoms and electron liquids. Tightening the Lieb-Oxford bound will have consequences for the performance of various approximate exchange-correlation functionals. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals Inc.

This work reports on the preparation, structural and luminescent studies of nanosized up-converter phosphors Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Er(0.1%) and Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Tm(0.1%),both from polymeric and basic carbonate precursors. The precursors were submitted to a sulphuration process that was previously developed for oxysulfide preparation from basic carbonate. From XRD data, all phosphors presented the oxysulfide phase and the mean crystallite size estimated from the Scherrer formula in the range of 15-20 nm. Polymeric precursor leads to the smallest crystallite size independent on the doping ion. SEM and TEM results confirmed that basic carbonate leads to spherical particles with narrow size distribution and mean diameter of 150 nm, and polymeric precursor smaller spherical particles with diameter between 20 and 40 nm. Up-conversion studies under 980 nm laser excitation showed that Er-doped phosphors present strong green emission related to H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) Er transitions as well as the red ones, F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2). Tm-doped samples show strong blue emission assigned to (1)G(4) --> H-3(6) and also the red ones, related to (1)G(4) --> F-3(4). Therefore, the sulphuration method was successfully applied to prepare nanosized and nanostructured blue and green up-converter oxysulfide phosphors starting from basic carbonate and polymeric precursors. Mineral concretions in the digestive cells of bees were examined under transmission electron microscope and histochemically. Ultrastructure shows two types of mineral deposits: 1) mineral concretions which are organized in granules with a striking concentrically layered organization of opaque and clear zones and 2) electron dense granules which appear inside small vacuoles (0.4-0.7 mu m). These two structures are present in the apex of the digestive cells of the posterior midgut. Histochemical data reveal that mineral concretions are composed of calcium, iron and uric acid or its salts while calcium determination gives a positive reaction for electron dense granules. Morphological and chemical similarities between the mineral concretions of bees and those described for other insects suggest that they have an important physiological role regulating the composition of the internal environment and to avoid intoxication. Since concretions and granules are structurally distinct, it is suggested that they are functionally different.

The electrochemistry reduction for the removal of Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) dye from aqueous solution using reticulated glassy carbon electrode is investigated. At pH < 8.0 the anthraquinone group of the RB4 dye are reduced in one cathodic step to hidroquinone after a reversible two-electron process involving a precedent two protons reaction. A stable semiquinone is detected by spectrophotometric technique. At pH > 8.0 the reduction process involves two reversible 2-electron steps, whose species are generated by a protonation equilibrium of anthraquinone group. The results shows that 60% of color removal was obtained after 3 hours of RB4 dye electrolysis at acidic and neutral conditions and only 37% at alkaline conditions. Simultaneously 64% of total organic carbon was removed after electrolysis at pH 2.0.
