A quantitative analysis of the phytoplankton of the Gulf of Panama III. General ecological conditions and the phytoplankton dynamics at 8°45'N, 79°23'W from November 1954 to May 1957

Bi-weekly phytoplankton samples were collected at 0, 10, and 20 m and enumerated by the Utermöhl sedimentation technique; 14C productivity measurements at 10 m, oblique zooplankton tows, and routine hydrographic observations were also made. Northerly winds induce upwelling during December-April, followed by a rainy season; a slight resurgence in upwelling may occur during July and/or August. Annual variations in upwelling intensity and rainfall occur. During upwelling, the upper 50 m, about 30 per cent of the total volume of the Gulf of Panama, is replaced with water 5 to 10 C colder than the more stratified, turbid and nutrient impoverished watermass present during the rainy season. The mean annual runoff accompanying an average annual precipitation of 2731 mm is estimated to equal a layer of fresh water 3.2 m thick. About 10 per cent of the phytoplankton phosphate and inorganic nitrogen requirements during the rainy season are accreted. (PDF contains 260 pages.)

Survey of El Nino 1957-58 in its relation to tropical pacific meteorology

ENGLISH: The survey aims at demonstrating the close relationship between anomalies of sea temperature observed along the tropical Pacific coast of the Americas and those observed in the oceanwide tropical belt. The survey also covers the variations, from 1952 to the present, of the trade-wind circulations which prove to be responsible for the major part of the anomalies in sea surface temperature. Finally, the thermal feedback effects of the oceanic anomalies upon the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere are treated in a preliminary fashion. SPANISH: El estudio trata de demostrar la estrecha relación que existe entre las anomalías observadas de la temperatura del mar a lo largo de la costa tropical de las Américas y las observadas en la faja tropical de todo el océano. El estudio incluye también las variaciones, desde 1952 hasta el presente, de la circulación de los vientos alisios que demuestra ser responsable por la mayor parte de las anomalías de temperatura de la superficie del mar. Data collected on tuna spawning survey cruise July 1-20, 1957: data report

Studies of gonads of yellowfin and skipjack tunas (Neothunnus macropterus and Katsuwonus pelamis) carried out by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission indicate that during summer months the offshore area in the region of the Revilla Gigedo Islands is a spawning location for these two species (Schaefer and Orange, 1956). In July of 1957 a cruise "Tuna Spawning Survey" was made aboard the vessel ORCA to make plankton hauls and to collect ancillary data for the primary purpose of surveying abundance of tuna larvae in this region. Influences Of Precursor Constitution And Processing Speed On Microstructure And Wear Behavior During Laser Clad Composite Coatings On Gamma-Tial Intermetallic Alloy

The effects of constitution of precursor mixed powders and scan speed on microstructure and wear properties were designed and investigated during laser clad gamma/Cr7C3/TiC composite coatings on gamma-TiAl intermetallic alloy substrates with NiCr-Cr3C2 precursor mixed powders. The results indicate that both the constitution of the precursor mixed powders and the beam scan rate have remarkable influence on microstructure and attendant hardness as well as wear resistance of the formed composite coatings. The wear mechanisms of the original TiAl alloy and laser clad composite coatings were investigated. The composite coating with an optimum compromise between constitution of NiCr-Cr3C2 precursor mixed powders as well as being processed under moderate scan speed exhibits the best wear resistance under dry sliding wear test conditions. Climate adaptation and the fifth amendment of the United States Constitution: How do adaptation strategies impact regulatory takings claims?

As the impacts and potential of climate change are realized at the governance level, states are moving towards adaptation strategies that include greater regulatory restrictions on development within coastal zones. The purpose of this paper is to outline the impacts of existing and planned regulatory mechanisms on the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prevents the government taking of private property for public use without just compensation. A short history of regulatory takings is explained, and the potential legal issues surrounding mitigation and adaptation measures for coastal communities are discussed. The goal is to gain an understanding of the legal issues that must be resolved by governments to effectively deal with regulatory takings claims as coastal mitigation and adaptation plans are implemented. Report of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission for the year 1957

ENGLISH: The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission was established under authority of a Convention between the Governments of Costa Rica and the United States, which entered into force in 1950_ The Convention provides for the adherence of other governments having an interest in the tuna and tuna-bait resources of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, by exchange of correspondence with existing members. Panama adhered to the Convention in 1953. SPANISH: La Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical fué establecida en virtud de una Convención entre los Gobiernos de Costa Rica y de los Estados Unidos, cuya vigencia comenzó en 1950. Dicha Convención permite la entrada de otros gobiernos que tengan interés en los recursos de atún y de peces de carnada para su pesca en el Océano Pacífico Oriental Tropical, mediante el intercambio de correspondencia con los países firmantes. The effect of oxygen concentration in water on the growth and nitrogen metabolism in the fry of rainbow trout [Translation from: Rybnoe Khoziaistvo,V.33, 74-75, 1957]

To ascertain the effect of various concentrations of oxygen in water on the fry of rainbow trout experiments were made with aquaria at various concentrations of oxygen. The food supplied was chironomid larvae (Chironomus plumosus). A surplus of food was supplied to the fry. Indices are given of the reaction of the fry to different temperatures.

Em busca de uma poesia universal: Murilo Mendes na Itália (1957-1975)

Este trabalho é o resultado da análise de cinco livros da fase italiana (1957-1975) do poeta Murilo Mendes (1901-1975), com a intenção principal de se extrair deles a presença e a influência da Literatura e da História da arte italianas na produção do poeta mineiro. Murilo Mendes, que na Itália se tornou professor universitário e praticou a crítica de arte com intensidade, chegou a escrever dois livros em italiano. As duas primeiras obras aqui analisadas, Retratos-relâmpago e Locchio del poeta, recolhem textos em prosa sobre artistas de contextos, épocas e países diferentes: da música à literatura às artes plásticas. Esses textos escritos entre prosa e poesia são o resultado de uma maior aproximação à reflexão crítico-teórica por parte de Murilo, que, ao analisar um artista, recorre aos mesmos recursos, motivos e técnicas que irá colocar em prática na própria obra poética. Nos últimos livros de poesia do poeta mineiro (Siciliana, Convergência e Ipotesi), encontram-se de fato alguns desses elementos, como, sobretudo, o lírico-autobiográfico e o crítico-social. Na Itália, a poesia de Murilo se universaliza ao superar, segundo o impulso do Essencialismo, as fronteiras de espaço e tempo.
