Immunological systems have been an abundant inspiration to contemporary computer scientists. Problem solving strategies, stemming from known immune system phenomena, have been successfully applied to chall enging problems of modem computing. Simulation systems and mathematical modeling are also beginning use to answer more complex immunological questions as immune memory process and duration of vaccines, where the regulation mechanisms are not still known sufficiently (Lundegaard, Lund, Kesmir, Brunak, Nielsen, 2007). In this article we studied in machina a approach to simulate the process of antigenic mutation and its implications for the process of memory. Our results have suggested that the durability of the immune memory is affected by the process of antigenic mutation.and by populations of soluble antibodies in the blood. The results also strongly suggest that the decrease of the production of antibodies favors the global maintenance of immune memory.

Objectives.-A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of migraine, episodic tension-type headaches (ETTH), and chronic daily headaches (CDH), as well as the presence of symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in the adult population. Background.-The potential comorbidity of headache syndromes and TMD has been established mostly based on clinic-based studies. Methods.-A representative sample of 1230 inhabitants (51.5% women) was interviewed by a validated phone survey. TMD symptoms were assessed through 5 questions, as recommended by the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, in an attempt to classify possible TMD. Primary headaches were diagnosed based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Results.-When at least 1 TMD symptom was reported, any headache happened in 56.5% vs 31.9% (P < .0001) in those with no symptoms. For 2 symptoms, figures were 65.1% vs 36.3% (P < .0001); for 3 or more symptoms, the difference was even more pronounced: 72.8% vs 37.9%. (P < .0001). Taking individuals without headache as the reference, the prevalence of at least 1 TMD symptom was increased in ETTH (prevalence ratio = 1.48, 95% confidence interval = 1.20-1.79), migraine (2.10, 1.80-2.47) and CDH (2.41, 1.84-3.17). At least 2 TMD symptoms also happened more frequently in migraine (4.4, 3.0-6.3), CDH (3.4; 1.5-7.6), and ETTH (2.1; 1.3-3.2), relative to individuals with no headaches. Finally, 3 or more TMD symptoms were also more common in migraine (6.2; 3.8-10.2) than in no headaches. Differences were significant for ETTH (2.7 1.5-4.8), and were numerically but not significant for CDH (2.3; 0.66-8.04). Conclusions.-Temporomandibular disorder symptoms are more common in migraine, ETTH, and CDH relative to individuals without headache. Magnitude of association is higher for migraine. Future studies should clarify the nature of the relationship.

The Drosophila roughest (rst) locus encodes an immunoglobulin superfamily transmembrane glycoprotein implicated in a variety of embryonic and postembryonic developmental processes. Here we demonstrate a previously unnoticed role for this gene in the autophagic elimination of larval salivary glands during early pupal stages by showing that overexpression of the Rst protein ectodomain in early pupa leads to persistence of salivary glands up to at least 12 hours after head eversion, although with variable penetrance. The same phenotype is observed in individuals carrying the dominant regulatory allele rst(D), but not in loss of function alleles. Analysis of persistent glands at the ultrastructural level showed that programmed cell death starts at the right time but is arrested at an early stage of the process. Finally we describe the expression pattern and intracellular distribution of Rst in wild type and rstD mutants, showing that its downregulation in salivary glands at the beginning of pupal stage is an important factor in the correct implementation of the autophagic program of this tissue in space and time. genesis 47:492-504, 2009. To estimate the 1-year prevalence of tension-type headache (TTH) and the degree of the association of TTH with some sociodemographic characteristics of a representative sample of the adult population of Brazil. This was an observational, cross-sectional, population-based study. We conducted telephone interviews on 3848 people, aged 18-79 years, randomly selected from the 27 states of Brazil. Trained lay interviewers administered the structured questionnaire. It included questions about the sociodemographic characteristics of the population, as well as questions about headache. The degree of the association was calculated through prevalence ratios, adjusted with Poisson regression by gender, age, years of education, marital status, household income, job status, body mass index (BMI), and physical exercise. The estimated 1-year gender- and-age-adjusted prevalence of TTH was 13.0% (95% CI: 11.8-14.2%); 15.4% in males and 9.5% in females. The prevalence of probable TTH was 22.6% (95% CI: 21.1-24.1%). Most (86.2%) subjects reported episodic TTH; 6.4% had chronic TTH. The prevalence was higher at 18-29 years of age (16.2%). TTH was 1.6 times more prevalent in men, and 1.54 times more in subjects with more than 11 years of education. There was no significant association of TTH with marital or job status, household income, BMI, and physical activity. This is the first nationwide epidemiological study of TTH in Brazil. The overall prevalence of TTH in Brazil is low, at 13%. TTH is significantly more prevalent in males and subjects with higher education level.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) prevalence between different populations in obese adolescents is scanty to date. Objective: To compare the MS prevalence and related risk factors in Brazilian and Italian obese adolescents. Methods: A total of 509 adolescents (110 Brazilian, 399 Italian), aged 15-19 years. Anthropometric characteristics, triglycerides (TG), total, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and blood pressure were measured. Results: Age, body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-score were not significantly different between the two subgroups. BMI z-score, TG, FPG, HOMA-IR and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were significantly higher in boys than in girls both in Brazilian and Italian adolescents, while HDL-cholesterol levels were lower in boys than in girls. No significant differences were observed in BMI, LDL and total-cholesterol and DBP in two genders and groups. Insulin, FPG, HOMA-IR and TG were significantly higher, while LDL-cholesterol and SBP were significantly lower in Brazilian than in Italian subjects, both in males and females. HDL and total-cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were not significantly different between the two subgroups and genders. MS prevalence was higher in Brazilian than in Italian obese boys (34.8 vs. 23.6%, p < 0.001) and girls (15.6 vs. 12.5%, p < 0.01). The most frequently altered parameter was HOMA-IR both in subjects with MS (100% in Brazilian and 81.8% in Italian) and without MS (42.9% and 11.7%). Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome represents a worldwide emerging health problem in different ethnical populations, the alterations of the risk factors related to MS (different in their prevalence between different subgroups) being strictly linked to the degree of obesity.

We investigated the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for inguinal herniorrhaphy postoperative pain control in a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study. Forty patients undergoing unilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy with an epidural anesthetic technique were randomly allocated to receive either active TENS or placebo TENS. Postoperative pain was evaluated using a standard 10-point numeric rating scale (NRS). Analgesic requirements were also recorded. TENS (100 Hz, strong but comfortable sensory intensity) was applied for 30 minutes through 4 electrodes placed around the incision twice, 2 and 4 hours after surgery. Pain was assessed before and after each application of TENS and 8 and 24 hours after surgery. In the group treated with active TENS, pain intensity was significantly lower 2 hours (P = .028), 4 hours (P = .022), 8 hours (P = .006), and 24 hours (P = .001) after the surgery when compared with the group that received placebo TENS. Active TENS also decreased analgesic requirements in the postoperative period when compared with placebo TENS (P = .001). TENS is thus beneficial for postoperative pain relief, after inguinal herniorrhaphy; it has no observable side effects, and the pain-reducing effect continued for at least 24 hours. Consequently, the routine use of TENS after inguinal herniorrhaphy is recommended. Perspective: This study presents the hypoalgesic effect of high-frequency TENS for postoperative pain after inguinal herniorrhaphy. This may reinforce findings from basic science showing an opioid-like effect provided by TENS, given that high-frequency TENS has been shown to activate delta-opioid receptors. The sciarid DNA puff C4 BhC4-1 gene is amplified and transcribed in salivary glands at the end of the larval stage. In transgenic Drosophila, the BhC4-1 promoter drives transcription in prepupal salivary glands and in the ring gland of late embryos. A bioinformatics analysis has identified 162 sequences similar to distinct regions of the BhC4-1 proximal promoter, which are predominantly located either in 5` or 3` regions or introns in the Drosophila melanogaster genome. A significant number of the identified sequences are found in the regulatory regions of Drosophila genes that are expressed in the salivary gland. Functional assays in Drosophila reveal that the BhC4-1 proximal promoter contains both a 129 bp (-186/-58) salivary gland enhancer and a 67 bp (-253/-187) ring gland enhancer that drive tissue specific patterns of developmentally regulated gene expression, irrespective of their orientation.

Dessa maneira, ?? importante discutir a forma de intera????o entre o Estado e o setor n??o-governamental que, atuando como grupos de press??o, cria pol??ticas globais que debilitam gradualmente a centralidade do Estado e geram uma crise de governabilidade. Como as pol??ticas globais s??o realizadas em inst??ncias locais, a abordagem beyond the state se torna vulner??vel na medida em que o Estado ?? agente, se n??o definidor, implementador dessas pol??ticas. Para tanto, faz-se oportuna uma associa????o entre o Estado e o setor n??o-governamental, permitindo que um processo descentralizador e participativo favore??a os elementos para o redesenho do Estado.

O interesse pelo relacionamento entre humanos e cães tem sido crescentemente refletido em produções científicas, apesar destas ainda se mostrarem incipientes no contexto latino-americano, e, por conseguinte, no brasileiro. Nestes termos, quando se toma como foco o relacionamento específico entre cães e pessoas em situação de rua, a incipiência se mostra ainda mais notória, apesar de se tratar de fenômeno que abarca questões interessantes, tanto de cunho individual quanto social e de políticas públicas. Diante disto, a realização do presente estudo se justificou por contribuir com a elucidação da temática, haja vista que teve por objetivo geral: investigar, apontar e compreender relacionamentos estabelecidos por pares que se caracterizem por pertencerem às espécies em questão e por fazerem das ruas espaços para estabelecimento de suas rotinas. Sendo estes critérios de seleção de participantes somados a idade mínima de 18 anos, foram entrevistadas 12 pessoas que nas ocasiões se encontravam em logradouros públicos dos municípios de Vitória, Serra e Vila Velha. Para guiar as entrevistas, foi utilizado roteiro semiestruturado com o intuito de coletar: dados sociais e econômicos dos participantes; conhecer aspectos dos relacionamentos interpessoais dos participantes; acessar relatos que dissessem respeito a partes das histórias de vida de moradores de rua que envolvessem relacionamento com cães; e por fim, recolher informações acerca do uso de serviços de assistência à população de rua, seja na presença ou na ausência do(s) cão(es). Em adição, foram utilizados dados provenientes de conversa informal e voluntária entre a pesquisadora e três funcionárias do Serviço Especializado em Abordagem Social do município de Vitória. A partir daí, os dados coletados foram organizados em cinco grandes itens, nos quais foram detalhadamente analisados e discutidos. Estes itens são: Caracterização sociodemográfica e econômica dos participantes; Caracterização geral dos relacionamentos; Concepções dos participantes acerca dos cães em suas vidas; Repercussões individuais e sociais do relacionamento; e “Sobre pessoas em situação de rua e cães: o "último vínculo"?”. Diante da análise destes, então, tornou-se possível inferir que o relacionamento entre humanos e cães, apesar de manter semelhanças que, por vezes, fazem com que sejam comparados ou equiparados a amizades ou a relacionamentos familiares, se trata de um tipo a parte. Além disto, quando o humano do par homem-cão se encontra em situação de rua, algumas peculiaridades se fazem bastante evidentes, dentre as quais a dificuldade de afastamento do animal, quando em situações momentâneas (por exemplo, em ocasiões de deslocamentos pelas cidades) ou duradouras (como quando por motivos de idas a instituições de abrigamento), em que não é possível tê-lo junto. Por fim, aponta-se como ponderável a recorrente colocação de que o cão seria o único e/ou último vínculo da pessoa em situação de rua com que convive, já que não raramente os participantes mencionaram rearranjos relacionais com humanos posteriores ao início da situação em questão.

Introdução: A Incontinência Urinária (IU) feminina é um importante problema de saúde pública, quer pela sua elevada prevalência, quer pelo elevado impacte físico, psíquico e social na vida da mulher. O objectivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência, o impacte da Incontinência Urinária de Stresse (IUS) antes e durante a gravidez em parturientes do distrito de Viana do Castelo e determinar a percentagem de mulheres que procura apoio de um profissional de saúde para o seu problema. Método: Realizou-se um estudo transversal considerando uma amostra representativa do distrito, constituída por 336 mulheres, cujo parto ocorreu no Hospital de Santa Luzia, no período compreendido entre 15 de Janeiro a 29 de Março de 2002. Todas as mulheres foram submetidas a um questionário no pós-parto hospitalar. Resultados: A prevalência da IUS, definida como Alguma vez teve perda de urina durante a realização de um esforço? foi de 5,4% (IC 95%: 3,0-7,8) antes da gravidez e 51,5% (IC 95%: 46,1-56,9) durante a gravidez actual. Os factores associados à ocorrência da IUS antes da gravidez foram a multiparidade (OR=9,96), a presença de diabetes (OR=4,61) e obesidade (OR=4,76), e à IUS durante a gravidez foram a multiparidade (OR=1,66), a diabetes (OR=2,62) e a obstipação (OR=1,73). A grande maioria (88,9%) das mulheres com IUS sente-se incomodada por se sentir húmida, 48,5% sente-se nervosa ou ansiosa e 57,3% tem medo que os outros se apercebam do odor. Durante a gravidez, apenas menos de metade das mulheres que tiveram perdas de urina procurou apoio de um profissional de saúde, apesar de a maioria ter interesse em tratar o problema. Conclusões: A IUS afecta um grande número de mulheres deste distrito antes e durante a gravidez. A IUS tem reflexos em várias dimensões da saúde, sendo o bem-estar físico e emocional os mais afectados, mas apenas uma pequena percentagem de mulheres revela o seu problema de IUS a um profissional de saúde. Perante esta evidência tornase importante que os profissionais de saúde conheçam esta realidade e se preocupem em dar resposta a estes problemas de saúde.

The continuous improvement of Ethernet technologies is boosting the eagerness of extending their use to cover factory-floor distributed real time applications. Indeed, it is remarkable the considerable amount of research work that has been devoted to the timing analysis of Ethernet-based technologies in the past few years. It happens, however, that the majority of those works are restricted to the analysis of sub-sets of the overall computing and communication system, thus without addressing timeliness in a holistic fashion. To this end, we address an approach, based on simulation, aiming at extracting temporal properties of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Ethernet-based factory-floor distributed systems. This framework is applied to a specific COTS technology, Ethernet/IP. We reason about the modeling and simulation of Ethernet/IP-based systems, and on the use of statistical analysis techniques to provide useful results on timeliness. The approach is part of a wider framework related to the research project INDEPTH NDustrial-Ethernet ProTocols under Holistic analysis.

O presente trabalho descreve a síntese de 10 flavotionas e a sua caracterização espectroscópica e fotofísica, incluindo a determinação dos rendimentos quânticos de formação de tripleto e de produção de oxigénio singuleto. Os dados obtidos foram correlacionados com cálculos de orbitais moleculares de forma a racionalizar o efeito do padrão de substituição de grupo OH (hidroxilo) nas propriedades espectroscópicas e fotofísicas das flavotionas. Foi ainda estudada a fotodegradação dos compostos, isolados e identificados os fotoprodutos obtidos em diferentes meios, e proposto um mecanismo para a actuação destes compostos como fotosensitizadores. E finalmente, utilizar este conhecimento para desenvolver pesticidas activados pela absorção de luz, mais eficientes e amigos do ambiente.

The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol has the ability to support time-sensitive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications due to the Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) Medium Access Control mechanism. Recently, several analytical and simulation models of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol have been proposed. Nevertheless, currently available simulation models for this protocol are both inaccurate and incomplete, and in particular they do not support the GTS mechanism. In this paper, we propose an accurate OPNET simulation model, with focus on the implementation of the GTS mechanism. The motivation that has driven this work is the validation of the Network Calculus based analytical model of the GTS mechanism that has been previously proposed and to compare the performance evaluation of the protocol as given by the two alternative approaches. Therefore, in this paper we contribute an accurate OPNET model for the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. Additionally, and probably more importantly, based on the simulation model we propose a novel methodology to tune the protocol parameters such that a better performance of the protocol can be guaranteed, both concerning maximizing the throughput of the allocated GTS as well as concerning minimizing frame delay.

Basidiomycete strains synthesize several types of beta-D-glucans, which play a major role in the medicinal properties of mushrooms. Therefore, the specific quantification of these beta-D-glucans in mushroom strains is of great biochemical importance. Because published assay methods for these beta-D-glucans present some disadvantages, a novel colorimetric assay method for beta-D-glucan with alcian blue dye was developed. The complex formation was detected by following the decrease in absorbance in the range of 620 nm and by hypsochromic shift from 620 to 606 nm (similar to 14 nm) in UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Analysis of variance was used for optimization of the slope of the calibration curve by using the assay mixture containing 0.017% (w/v) alcian blue in 2% (v/v) acetic acid at pH 3.0. The high-throughput colorimetric assay method on microtiter plates was used for quantification of beta-D-glucans in the range of 0-0.8 mu g, with a slope of 44.15 x 10(-2) and a limit of detection of 0.017 mu g/well. Recovery experiments were carried out by using a sample of Hericium erinaceus, which exhibited a recovery of 95.8% for beta-1,3-D-glucan. The present assay method exhibited a 10-fold higher sensitivity and a 59-fold lower limit of detection compared with the published method with congo red beta-D-glucans of several mushrooms strains were isolated from fruiting bodies and mycelia, and they were quantified by this assay method. This assay method is fast, specific, simple, and it can be used to quantify beta-D-glucans from other biological sources. (C) 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers
