Strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) ages have been established for Oligocene samples of Leg 119 Site 744, Leg 120 Sites 747 and 748, and Leg 121 Sites 756 and 757. Ages were determined using the strontium isotope age equation of Miller et al. (1988) and preliminary correlations have been made with available nannofossil biostratigraphy. The strontium isotope ages calculated here augment biostratigraphy, which for the Oligocene is characterized by long biozones, and provide additional detail where the paleomagnetic record is not clear (Sites 756 and 757). Results from the lower latitude Ninetyeast Ridge sites where standard calcareous nannofossil datums are present are compared to those of the higher latitude Kerguelen Plateau sites in order to examine biostratigraphic events across latitude in the Indian Ocean. The 87Sr/86Sr determined ages are used here as a tool for correlation.

Core samples taken during Leg 121 drilling aboard the JOIDES Resolution in the central Indian Ocean were analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Forty-three samples from the Broken Ridge and 39 samples from the Ninetyeast Ridge drill sites, deep-frozen on board immediately after recovery, were studied by a dynamic headspace technique (hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization). Light hydrocarbons (saturated and olefinic) with two to four carbon atoms, and toluene as a selected aromatic compound, were identified. Total C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbon yields vary considerably from virtually zero in a Paleogene calcareous ooze from Hole 757B to nearly 600 nanogram/gram of dry-weight sediment (parts per billion) in a Cretaceous claystone from Hole 758A. An increase of light-hydrocarbon yields with depth, and hence with sediment temperature, was observed from Hole 758A samples down to a depth of about 500 meters below seafloor. Despite extreme data scatter due to lithological changes over this depth interval, this increased yield indicates the onset of temperature-controlled hydrocarbon formation reactions. Toluene contents are also extremely variable (generally between 10 and 100 ppb) and reach more than 300 ppb in two samples of tuffaceous lithology (Sections 121-755A-17R-4 and 121-758A-48R-4). As for the saturated hydrocarbons, there was also an increase of toluene yields with increasing depth in Hole 758A.

Studies of the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom typically have focused on high-productivity areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans in order to achieve high resolution samples. Thus there is a paucity of information concerning whether the Atlantic Ocean, in general or low-productivity regions in all three basins experienced this bloom. This study measured the phosphorus mass accumulation rate (PMAR). in five cores from low-productivity regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. All cores exhibit a peak in productivity 4-5.5 Ma, coincident with the Indo-Pacific bloom. This suggests that nutrients were not shifted away from low-productivity regions nor out of the Atlantic Ocean. Instead, it appears that the bloom was caused by an overall increase in nutrient flux into the world oceans. Four of the cores record the bloom's PMAR peak as bimodal, indicating a pulsed increase in phosphorus to the oceans. This suggests that there may have been multiple causes of the biogenic bloom.

The stability of gypsum in marine sediments has been investigated through the calculation of its saturation index at the sediment in situ temperature and pressure, using the entire ODP/IODP porewater composition database (14416 samples recovered from sediments collected during 95 ODP and IODP Legs). Saturation is reached in sediment porewaters of 26 boreholes drilled at 23 different sites, during 12 ODP/IODP Legs. As ocean bottom seawater is largely undersaturated with respect to gypsum, the porewater Ca content or its SO4 concentration, or both, must increase in order to reach equilibrium. At several sites equilibrium is reached either through the presence of evaporitic gypsum layers found in the sedimentary sequence, and/or through a salinity increase due to the presence of evaporitic brines with high concentrations of Ca and SO4. Saturation can also be reached in porewaters of seawater-like salinity (~ 35 per mil), provided sulfate reduction is limited. In this case, saturation is due to the alteration of volcanogenic material which releases large amounts of Ca to the porewaters, where the Ca concentration can reach 55 times its seawater value as for example at ODP Leg 134 site 833. At a few sites, saturation is reached in hydrothermal environments, or as a consequence of the alteration of the basaltic basement. In addition to the well known influence of brines on the formation of gypsum, these results indicate that the alteration of sediments rich in volcanogenic material is a major process leading to gypsum saturation in marine sediment porewaters. Therefore, the presence of gypsum in ancient and recent marine sediments should not be systematically interpreted as due to hypersaline waters, especially if volcanogenic material is present.

Multivariate analysis was performed on percentages of 46 species of unstained deep-sea benthic foraminifera from 131 core-top to near-core-top samples (322-5013 m) from across the Indian Ocean. Faunal data are combined with GEOSECS geochemical data to investigate any relationship between benthic foraminifera (assemblages and species) and deep-sea properties. In general, benthic foraminifera show a good correlation to surface productivity, organic carbon flux to the sea floor, deep-sea oxygenation and, to a lesser extent, to bottom temperature, without correlation with the water depths. The foraminiferal census data combined with geochemical data has enabled the division of the Indian Ocean into two faunal provinces. Province A occupies the northwestern Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea region) where surface primary production has a major maximum during the summer monsoon season and a secondary maximum during winter monsoon season that leads to high organic flux to the seafloor, making the deep-sea one of the most oxygen-deficient regions in the world ocean, with a pronounced oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). This province is dominated by benthic foraminifera characteristic of low oxygen and high organic food flux including Uvigerina peregrina, Robulus nicobarensis, Bolivinita pseudopunctata, Bolivinita sp., Bulimina aculeata, Bulimina alazanensis, Ehrenbergina carinata and Cassidulina carinata. Province B covers southern, southeastern and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean and is dominated by Nuttallides umbonifera, Epistominella exigua, Globocassidulina subglobosa, Uvigerina proboscidea, Cibicides wuellerstorfi, Cassidulina laevigata, Pullenia bulloides, Pullenia osloensis, Pyrgo murrhina, Oridorsalis umbonatus, Gyroidinoides (= Gyroidina) soldanii and Gyroidinoides cf. gemma suggesting well-oxygenated, cold deep water with low (oligotrophic) and pulsed food supply.

Recent investigations have shown the significance of subarachnoid bleeding on computed tomography scans first taken after admission for head injuries. In our study, we describe a prospective follow-up of 121 patients with traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (tSAH). From January 2004 to January 2007 we collected data prospectively from 121 patients admitted with diagnosis of tSAH to our trauma intensive care unit, on the basis of admission with a computed tomography scan. The classification of tSAH was performed using the Fisher scale with modification, and the follow-up was performed using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). The minimum period for a follow-up was established 6 months after the injury. Traffic accident was the main cause of head injuries (72% in total; 48% involving cars and 24% involving motorcycles), followed by falls (23%) and aggression (5%). Twenty-eight percent of patients sustained major multiple injuries, with spinal injury as the main associated trauma. The outcome was favorable (GOS score 4 or 5) in 54 patients (45%) and unfavorable (GOS score 1, 2, or 3) in 67 patients (55%). The mortality rate was proportionally greater in patients who had cisternal clots >1 mm (P < 0.001), assessed by the Fisher scale with modification. When functional recovery was evaluated using the GOS, the recovery rate and the daily life activities were lower in patients with intraventricular bleeding (P = 0.001). Our results showed that patients with severe tSAH had the worst prognosis.

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to obtain data on the association of antiphospholipid antibodies with clinical manifestations in childhood and to enable future studies to determine the impact of treatment and long-term outcome of pediatric antiphospholipid syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS. A European registry extended internationally of pediatric patients with antiphospholipid syndrome was established as a collaborative project of the European Antiphospholipid Antibodies Forum and Lupus Working Group of the Pediatric Rheumatology European Society. To be eligible for enrollment the patient must meet the preliminary criteria for the classification of pediatric antiphospholipid syndrome and the onset of antiphospholipid syndrome must have occurred before the patient`s 18th birthday. RESULTS. As of December 1, 2007, there were 121 confirmed antiphospholipid syndrome cases registered from 14 countries. Fifty-six patients were male, and 65 were female, with a mean age at the onset of antiphospholipid syndrome of 10.7 years. Sixty (49.5%) patients had underlying autoimmune disease. Venous thrombosis occurred in 72 (60%), arterial thrombosis in 39 (32%), small-vessel thrombosis in 7 (6%), and mixed arterial and venous thrombosis in 3 (2%). Associated nonthrombotic clinical manifestations included hematologic manifestations (38%), skin disorders (18%), and nonthrombotic neurologic manifestations (16%). Laboratory investigations revealed positive anticardiolipin antibodies in 81% of the patients, anti-beta(2)-glycoprotein I antibodies in 67%, and lupus anticoagulant in 72%. Comparisons between different subgroups revealed that patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome were younger and had a higher frequency of arterial thrombotic events, whereas patients with antiphospholipid syndrome associated with underlying autoimmune disease were older and had a higher frequency of venous thrombotic events associated with hematologic and skin manifestations. CONCLUSIONS. Clinical and laboratory characterization of patients with pediatric antiphospholipid syndrome implies some important differences between antiphospholipid syndrome in pediatric and adult populations. Comparisons between children with primary antiphospholipid syndrome and antiphospholipid syndrome associated with autoimmune disease have revealed certain differences that suggest 2 distinct subgroups. PURPOSE: In contrast to other human tumors, a repression of the cell-surface glycoprotein CD44 on neuroblastoma is a marker of aggressiveness that usually correlates to N-myc amplification. We thus compared the prognostic value of both markers in the initial staging of 121 children treated for neuroblastoma in collaborative institutions. METHODS: Frozen samples were analyzed by a rapid and well-standardized technique of immunostaining with monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against epitopes in the CD44 constant region. RESULTS: In this retrospective series, CD44 was expressed on 102 specimens and strongly correlated with favorable tumor stages and histology, younger age, and normal N-myc copy numbers. In univariate analysis, CD44 expression and normal N-myc were the most powerful markers of favorable clinical outcome (P < 10(-6) and chi 2 = 65.40 and P < 10(-6) and chi 2 = 42.56, respectively), but analysis of CD44 affords significant prognostic discrimination in subgroups of patients with or without N-myc-amplified tumors. In the subgroup of stage IV neuroblastomas, CD44 was the only significant prognostic marker (P < .02, chi 2 = 5.76), whereas N-myc status was not discriminant. In multivariate analysis of five factors, ie, N-myc amplification, CD44 expression, age, tumor stage, and histology, the only independent prognostic factors of event-free survival were CD44 expression and tumor stage. CONCLUSION: The analysis of CD44 cell-surface expression must be recommended as an additional biologic marker in the initial staging of the disease.
