CD18-dependent activation of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase during phagocytosis of Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus is regulated by class III but not class I or II PI3Ks

Phagocytosis and activation of the NADPH oxidase are important mechanisms by which neutrophils and macrophages engulf and kill microbial pathogens. We investigated the role of PI3K signaling pathways in the regulation of the oxidase during phagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by mouse and human neutrophils, a mouse macrophage-like cell line and a human myeloid-like cell line. Phagocytosis of these bacteria was promoted by serum, independent of serum-derived antibodies, and effectively abolished in mouse neutrophils lacking the beta(2)-integrin common chain, CD18. A combination of PI3K isoform-selective inhibitors, mouse knock-outs, and RNA-interference indicated CD18-dependent activation of the oxidase was independent of class I and II PI3Ks, but substantially dependent on the single class III isoform (Vps34). Class III PI3K was responsible for the synthesis of PtdIns( 3) P on phagosomes containing either bacteria. The use of mouse neutrophils carrying an appropriate knock-in mutation indicated that PtdIns(3) P binding to the PX domain of their p40(phox) oxidase subunit is important for oxidase activation in response to both S aureus and E coli. This interaction does not, however, account for all the PI3K sensitivity of these responses, particularly the oxidase response to E coli, suggesting that additional mechanisms for PtdIns( 3) P-regulation of the oxidase must exist. Stereotactic radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations, Part 1:management of Spetzler-Martin Grade I and II arteriovenous malformations

The aim of this paper was to define the outcomes and risks of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for Spetzler-Martin Grade I and II arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).

Phase I and II biotransformation enzymes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lamarck, 1819) collected in front of an oil refinery

The aim of the present study was to investigate the responses of phase I and II biotransformation enzymes and levels of PAHs in the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lamarck, 1819) collected from three sites at different distance from an oil refinery. Phase I enzyme activities as NAD(P)H-cyt c red, NADH ferry red, B(a)PMO and phase II as UDPGT. GST were measured in digestive gland while 16 PAHs (US-EPA) in whole soft tissue. An added value to the data obtained in the present study rely on the RDA analysis which showed close correlations between PAHs levels and phase I enzyme activities in mussels collected in front of the refinery. And again a significant spatial correlation between B(a)P levels and NADPH-cyt c red activities was observed using linear models. No differences among sites for B(a) PMO and phase II GST activities were observed, while the application of UDPGT as biomarkers requires further investigation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Arquivos de casas-museu. O arquivo da casa dos patudos - Parte I e II

Esta dissertação aborda a problemática dos acervos arquivísticos de casasmuseu em Portugal. Estas instituições são comummente associadas à perpetuação da memória de uma personalidade. São objetivos deste projeto a identificação dos arquivos, a recolha de informações sobre o tratamento arquivístico e sobre as funções que desempenham nas instituições. Para a consecução destes objetivos foi realizado um inquérito. A análise dos dados recolhidos revela uma realidade longe do desejável. Muitos acervos ainda não foram alvo de tratamento. Verificou-se que a utilização dos acervos nas tarefas museológicas é, em alguns casos, incipiente. Como resultado final deste trabalho, apresentamos um guia dos acervos à guarda das casas-museu em Portugal. Constitui, ainda, objeto deste projeto o arquivo da Casa dos Patudos - Museu de Alpiarça. É feita a apresentação desta instituição, dos contextos e produtores, bem uma análise do acervo arquivístico e do seu contributo para as atividades museológicas; ABSTRACT: Archives of house-museums. The Archive of the House of Patudos. This dissertation addresses the problematic of archives of house museums in Portugal. These institutions are commonly associated with the perpetuation of the memory of a personality. The objectives of this project are the identification of the archives, the gathering of information about the archival treatment and about the functions that they perform in the institutions. To the attainment of these objectives an inquiry was made. The analysis of the collected data reveals an undesirable reality. Many collections are still not the object of any treatment. It was verified that the use of collections in museological tasks is, in some cases, incipient. As a final result of this thesis, we have presented a guide of the collections in the care of house museums in Portugal. Another objective of this project is the archive of House of Patudos – Museum of Alpiarça. It is made the presentation of this institution, the context and the producers, as well as an analysis of the archive and its functions of the archive in the performance of the museological activities.

Chroniques de FROISSART, livres I et II.

Elles commencent (fol. 1) par : « Cy commence le second volume des Cronicques Froissart, contenant les faitz et batailles des roys de France et de Angleterre. Apres le conquest de La Roche sur Ion, si comme chi dessus est dit... » et finissent (fol. 286) par : «... et sirez Jaques d'Ardembourcq fut doien des menus mestiers, qui est ossy un gran office en la ville de Gand ». Le commencement du premier livre se trouvait dans un autre volume, qui semble perdu. Le premier livre finit, dans ce ms., au fol. 78, par : «... de laquelle je parlerai plus à plain, quant j'en serai mieux informé ». Le second livre vient ensuite, mais il n'est signalé par aucun titre. Il commence par : « En ce temps que li duc de Bourgongne fist son armée en Picardie, si comme il est contenu chi dessus... » et ces mots sont les premiers d'un paragraphe en tout semblable aux autres. « Une main postérieure, dit M. S. Luce (Introd. au premier livre des Chroniques de J. Froissart, Paris, 1869, page XLI), a pris à tâche de faire disparaître, en grattant ou en ajoutant des lettres à certains mots, une empreinte wallonne très caractérisée, ainsi que les signes usités dans notre ancienne langue pour marquer la distinction du cas sujet et du cas régime, qui est encore généralement observée dans ce précieux ms. ». Le texte y est accompagné d'un certain nombre de notes marginales dues à une main du XVe siècle. Ces notes ont été reproduites sur les marges d'une copie de ce ms., conservée sous le n° 20357 du Fonds français. Au bas du fol. 1 r° et au milieu de la bordure dont il est orné, sont les armes suivantes : d'azur à une tête de more de sable accompagnée de trois trèfles d'or. Ces armes se retrouvent dans le ms. 20357, fol. 1.
