This paper studies the impact of "liberalizing " the cost-sharing of links on some basic models of network formation. This is done in a setting where both doubly supported and singly supported links are possible, and which includes the two seminal models of network formation by Jackson and Wolinsky and Bala and Goyal as extreme cases. In this setting, the notion of pairwise stability is extended and it is proved that liberalizing cost-sharing for doubly supported links widens the range of values of the parameters where the efficient networks formed by such type of links are pairwise stable, while the range of values of the parameters where the efficient networks formed by singly supported links are pairwise stable shrinks, but the region where the latter are e¢ cient and pairwise stable remains the same.

Models capturing the connectivity between different domains of a design, e.g. between components and functions, can provide a tool for tracing and analysing aspects of that design. In this paper, video experiments are used to explore the role of cross-domain modelling in building up information about a design. The experiments highlight that cross-domain modelling can be a useful tool to create and structure design information. Findings suggest that consideration of multiple domains encourages discussion during modelling, helps identify design aspects that might otherwise be overlooked, and can help promote consideration of alternative design options. We explore collective behavior in biological systems using a cooperative control framework. In particular, we study a hysteresis phenomenon in which a collective switches from circular to parallel motion under slow variation of the neighborhood size in which individuals tend to align with one another. In the case that the neighborhood radius is less than the circular motion radius, both circular and parallel motion can occur. We provide Lyapunov-based analysis of bistability of circular and parallel motion in a closed-loop system of self-propelled particles with coupled-oscillator dynamics. ©2007 IEEE.
