We modified the noninvasive, in vivo technique for strain application in the tibiae of rats (Turner et al,, Bone 12:73-79, 1991), The original model applies four-point bending to right tibiae via an open-loop, stepper-motor-driven spring linkage, Depending on the magnitude of applied load, the model produces new bone formation at periosteal (Ps) or endocortical surfaces (Ec.S). Due to the spring linkage, however, the range of frequencies at which loads can be applied is limited. The modified system replaces this design with an electromagnetic vibrator. A load transducer in series with the loading points allows calibration, the loaders' position to be adjusted, and cyclic loading completed under load central as a closed servo-loop. Two experiments were conducted to validate the modified system: (1) a strain gauge was applied to the lateral surface of the right tibia of 5 adult female rats and strains measured at applied loads from 10 to 60 N; and (2) the bone formation response was determined in 28 adult female Sprague-Dawley rats. Loading was applied as a haversine wave with a frequency of 2 Hz for 18 sec, every second day for 10 days. Peak bending loads mere applied at 33, 40, 52, and 64 N, and a sham-loading group tr as included at 64 N, Strains in the tibiae were linear between 10 and 60 N, and the average peak strain at the Ps.S at 60 N was 2664 +/- 250 microstrain, consistent with the results of Turner's group. Lamellar bone formation was stimulated at the Ec.S by applied bending, but not by sham loading. Bending strains above a loading threshold of 40 N increased Ec Lamellar hone formation rate, bone forming surface, and mineral apposition rate with a dose response similar to that reported by Turner et al, (J Bone Miner Res 9:87-97, 1994). We conclude that the modified loading system offers precision for applied loads of between 0 and 70 N, versatility in the selection of loading rates up to 20 Hz, and a reproducible bone formation response in the rat tibia, Adjustment of the loader also enables study of mechanical usage in murine tibia, an advantage with respect to the increasing variety of transgenic strains available in bone and mineral research. The high affinity receptor for human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) consists of a cytokine-specific alpha-subunit (hGMR alpha) and a common signal-transducing beta-subunit (hpc) that is shared with the interleukin-3 and -5 receptors, We have previously identified a constitutively active extracellular point mutant of hpc, I374N, that can confer factor independence on murine FDC-P1 cells but not BAF-B03 or CTLL-2 cells (Jenkins, B. J., D'Andrea, R. J., and Gonda, T. J. (1995) EMBO J. 14, 4276-4287), This restricted activity suggested the involvement of cell type-specific signaling molecules in the activation of this mutant. We report here that one such molecule is the mouse GMR alpha (mGMR alpha) subunit, since introduction of mGMR alpha, but not hGMR alpha, into BAF-B03 or CTLL-2 cells expressing the I374N mutant conferred factor independence, Experiments utilizing mouse/human chimeric GMR alpha subunits indicated that the species specificity lies in the extracellular domain of GMRa. Importantly, the requirement for mGMR alpha correlated with the ability of I374N (but not wild-type hpc) to constitutively associate with mGMRa. Expression of I374N in human factor-dependent UT7 cells also led to factor-independent proliferation, with concomitant up-regulation of hGMR alpha surface expression. Taken together, these findings suggest a critical role for association with GMR alpha in the constitutive activity of I374N.

To translate and transfer solution data between two totally different meshes (i.e. mesh 1 and mesh 2), a consistent point-searching algorithm for solution interpolation in unstructured meshes consisting of 4-node bilinear quadrilateral elements is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm has the following significant advantages: (1) The use of a point-searching strategy allows a point in one mesh to be accurately related to an element (containing this point) in another mesh. Thus, to translate/transfer the solution of any particular point from mesh 2 td mesh 1, only one element in mesh 2 needs to be inversely mapped. This certainly minimizes the number of elements, to which the inverse mapping is applied. In this regard, the present algorithm is very effective and efficient. (2) Analytical solutions to the local co ordinates of any point in a four-node quadrilateral element, which are derived in a rigorous mathematical manner in the context of this paper, make it possible to carry out an inverse mapping process very effectively and efficiently. (3) The use of consistent interpolation enables the interpolated solution to be compatible with an original solution and, therefore guarantees the interpolated solution of extremely high accuracy. After the mathematical formulations of the algorithm are presented, the algorithm is tested and validated through a challenging problem. The related results from the test problem have demonstrated the generality, accuracy, effectiveness, efficiency and robustness of the proposed consistent point-searching algorithm. The assumption in analytical solutions for flow from surface and buried point sources of an average water content, (θ) over bar, behind the wetting front is examined. Some recent work has shown that this assumption fitted some field data well. Here we calculated (θ) over bar using a steady state solution based on the work by Raats [1971] and an exponential dependence of the diffusivity upon the water content. This is compared with a constant value of (θ) over bar calculated from an assumption of a hydraulic conductivity at the wetting front of 1 mm day(-1) and the water content at saturation. This comparison was made for a wide range of soils. The constant (θ) over bar generally underestimated (θ) over bar at small wetted radii and overestimated (θ) over bar at large radii. The crossover point between under and overestimation changed with both soil properties and flow rate. The largest variance occurred for coarser texture soils at low-flow rates. At high-flow rates in finer-textured soils the use of a constant (θ) over bar results in underestimation of the time for the wetting front to reach a particular radius. The value of (θ) over bar is related to the time at which the wetting front reaches a given radius. In coarse-textured soils the use of a constant value of (θ) over bar can result in an error of the time when the wetting front reaches a particular radius, as large as 80% at low-flow rates and large radii.

For a pair of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H and its Hermitian adjoint H(dagger), there are situations in which their eigenfunctions form a biorthogonal system. We illustrate such a situation by means of a one-particle system with a one-dimensional point interaction in the form of the Fermi pseudo-potential. The interaction consists of three terms with three strength parameters g(i) (i = 1, 2 and 3), which are all complex. This complex point interaction is neither Hermitian nor PT-invariant in general. The S-matrix for the transmission reflection problem constructed with H (or with H(dagger)) in the usual manner is not unitary, but it conforms to the pseudo-unitarity that we define. The pseudounitarity is closely related to the biorthogonality of the eigenfunctions. The eigenvalue spectrum of H with the complex interaction is generally complex but there are cases where the spectrum is real. In such a case H and H(dagger) form a pseudo-Hermitian pair.

In order to investigate whether myofascial trigger points can modulate tinnitus, as well as the association between tinnitus and myofascial trigger points, 94 individuals with and 94 without tinnitus, matched by age and gender, were analyzed by means of bilateral digital pressure of 9 muscles. Temporary modulation of tinnitus was frequently observed (55.9%) during digital pressure, mainly in the masseter. The rate of tinnitus modulation was significantly higher on the same side of the myofascial trigger point subject to examination in 6 out of 9 muscles. An association between tinnitus and the presence of myofascial trigger points was observed (p < 0.001), as well as a laterality association between the ear with the worst tinnitus and the side of the body with more myofascial trigger points (p < 0.001). Thus, this relationship could be explained not only by somatosensory-auditory system interactions but also by the influence of the sympathetic system. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel.

This study compared ultrasonic chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-coated tip (CVDentus #8.1117-1; Clorovale Diamantes Ind. e Com. Ltda Epp, Sao Jose dos Campos, SP, Brazil) versus high-speed (#FG700L) and low-speed (#699) carbide burs for apicoectomy, evaluating the time required for resection and analyzing the root-end surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. Thirty extracted human premolars had the canals instrumented and obturated and were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 10), according to the instrument used for root-end resection. The time required for resection of the apical 2 mm of each root was recorded. The resected apical segments were dried, sputter coated with gold, and examined with a scanning electron microscope at X 350 magnification. A four-point (0-3) scoring system was used to evaluate the apical surface smoothness. The results were analyzed statistically by the Kruskal-Wallis test and two-by-two comparisons analyses were performed using the Miller test. The significance level was set at 5%. Root-end resection with the high-speed bur was significantly faster (p < 0.05) compared with the low-speed bur and CVD tip. The carbide burs produced significantly smoother root-end surfaces than the CVD tip (p < 0.05). The low-speed bur produced the smoothest root-end surfaces, whereas the roughest and most irregular root ends (p < 0.05) were obtained with the CVD tip. However, no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) was found between the high- and low-speed burs regarding the surface roughness of the resected root ends (p > 0.05). In conclusion, under the tested conditions, ultrasonic root-end resection took a longer time and resulted in rougher surfaces compared with the use of carbide burs at both high and low speed. We obtain the finite-temperature unconditional master equation of the density matrix for two coupled quantum dots (CQD's) when one dot is subjected to a measurement of its electron occupation number using a point contact (PC). To determine how the CQD system state depends on the actual current through the PC device, we use the so-called quantum trajectory method to derive the zero-temperature conditional master equation. We first treat the electron tunneling through the PC barrier as a classical stochastic point process (a quantum-jump model). Then we show explicitly that our results can be extended to the quantum-diffusive limit when the average electron tunneling rate is very large compared to the extra change of the tunneling rate due to the presence of the electron in the dot closer to the PC. We find that in both quantum-jump and quantum-diffusive cases, the conditional dynamics of the CQD system can be described by the stochastic Schrodinger equations for its conditioned state vector if and only if the information carried away from the CQD system by the PC reservoirs can be recovered by the perfect detection of the measurements.

A feasibility study was carried out to test the hypothesis that, for an effective telehealth service, a full-time coordinator is required to act as a single point of contact for consultation requests. By shifting the responsibility for telepaediatrics from the referrer to the provider, the telehealth process becomes equally (or more) attractive as the conventional alternative. Preliminary results showed that, within six months, telepaediatric activity increased to an average of 8 h per month. Not only did certain health services become more accessible to children and their families in remote areas of Queensland, but significant savings were also made. At least 12 patient transfers were avoided to and from the tertiary facility, with an estimated minimum saving of $18,000 to the health-care provider.

This study presents novel evidence that N-15 natural abundance can be used as a robust indicator to detect pollutant nitrogen in natural plant communities. Vegetation from the heavily polluted industrial area of Cubatao in Sao Paulo State, SE Brazil, was strongly N-15 depleted compared to plants at remote sites. Historic herbarium samples from Cubatao were significantly less N-15 depleted than extant plants, indicating that N-15 depletion of vegetation is associated with present-day nitrogen pollution in Cubatao. The heavy load of nitrogenous atmospheric pollutants in Cubatao provides a nitrogen source for plants, and strongly N-15 depleted air NH3 is likely to contribute to plant and soil N-15 depletion. Epiphytic plants from Cubatao were extremely N-15 depleted (average -10.9parts per thousand) contrasting with epiphytes at remote sites (averages -1.0parts per thousand and -3.0parts per thousand). Nitrogen isotope composition of vegetation provides a tool to determine input of pollutant nitrogen into plant communities. The strong isotopic change of epiphytes suggests that epiphytes are particularly sensitive biomonitors for atmospheric pollutant nitrogen.

An operational space map is an efficient tool to compare a large number of operational strategies to find an optimal choice of setpoints based on a multicriterion. Typically, such a multicriterion includes a weighted sum of cost of operation and effluent quality. Due to the relative high cost of aeration such a definition of optimality result in a relatively high fraction of the effluent total nitrogen in the form of ammonium. Such a strategy may however introduce a risk into operation because a low degree of ammonium removal leads to a low amount of nitrifiers. This in turn leads to a reduced ability to reject event disturbances, such as large variations in the ammonium load, drop in temperature, the presence of toxic/inhibitory compounds in the influent etc. Hedging is a risk minimisation tool, with the aim to "reduce one's risk of loss on a bet or speculation by compensating transactions on the other side" (The Concise Oxford Dictionary (1995)). In wastewater treatment plant operation hedging can be applied by choosing a higher level of ammonium removal to increase the amount of nitrifiers. This is a sensible way to introduce disturbance rejection ability into the multi criterion. In practice, this is done by deciding upon an internal effluent ammonium criterion. In some countries such as Germany, a separate criterion already applies to the level of ammonium in the effluent. However, in most countries the effluent criterion applies to total nitrogen only. In these cases, an internal effluent ammonium criterion should be selected in order to secure proper disturbance rejection ability.

A new cloud-point extraction and preconcentration method, using a cationic, surfactant, Aliquat-336 (tricaprylyl-methy;ammonium chloride), his-been developed for the determination of cyanobacterial toxins, microcystins, in natural waters. Sodium sulfate was used to induce phase separation at 25 degreesC. The phase behavior of Aliquat-336 with respect to concentration of Na2SO4 was studied. The cloud-point system revealed a very high phase volume ratio compared to other established systems of nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants: At pH 6-7, it showed an outstanding selectivity in ahalyte extraction for anionic species. Only MC-LR and MC-YR, which are known to be predominantly anionic, were extracted (with averaged recoveries of 113.9 +/- 9% and 87.1 +/- 7%, respectively). MC-RR, which is likely to be amphoteric at the above pH range, was. not cle tectable in.the extract. Coupled to HPLC/UV separation and detection, the cloud-point extraction method (with 2.5 mM Aliquat-336 and 75 mM Na2SO4 at 25 degreesC) offered detection limits of 150 +/- 7 and 470 +/- 72 pg/mL for MC-LR and MC-YR, respectively, in 25 mL of deionized water. Repeatability of the method was 7.6% for MC-LR and 7.3% for MC-YR: The cloud-point extraction process can be. completed within 10-15 min with no cleanup steps required. Applicability of the new method to the determination of microcystins in real samples was demonstrated using natural surface waters, collected from a local river and a local duck pond spiked with realistic. concentrations of microcystins. Effects of salinity and organic matter (TOC) content in the water sample on the extraction efficiency were also studied.

Fixed-point roundoff noise in digital implementation of linear systems arises due to overflow, quantization of coefficients and input signals, and arithmetical errors. In uniform white-noise models, the last two types of roundoff errors are regarded as uniformly distributed independent random vectors on cubes of suitable size. For input signal quantization errors, the heuristic model is justified by a quantization theorem, which cannot be directly applied to arithmetical errors due to the complicated input-dependence of errors. The complete uniform white-noise model is shown to be valid in the sense of weak convergence of probabilistic measures as the lattice step tends to zero if the matrices of realization of the system in the state space satisfy certain nonresonance conditions and the finite-dimensional distributions of the input signal are absolutely continuous.
