We present femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic studies of a pseudogap (PG) along with the superconducting (SC) gap in an overdoped iron pnictide Ca(Fe0.927Co0.073)(2)As-2. It is seen that the temperature evolution of the photo-excited quasiparticle (QP) relaxation dynamics, coherently excited A(1g)-symmetric optical phonon and two acoustic phonon dynamics behave anomalously in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature T-c. A continuous change in the sign of the experimentally measured transient differential reflectivity Delta R/R signal at the zero time delay between the pump and probe pulses at a temperature of similar to 200K is inferred as an evidence of the emergence of the PG phase around that temperature. This behavior is independent of the pump photon energy and occurs for crystals without the spin density wave phase transition. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

The electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional monophosphate tungsten bronze, P4W12O44, has been investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theoretical calculations. Experimental electron-like bands around Gamma point and Fermi surfaces have similar shapes as predicted by calculations. Fermi surface mapping at different temperatures shows a depletion of density of states at low temperature in certain flat portions of the Fermi surfaces. These flat portions of the Fermi surfaces satisfy the partial nesting condition with incommensurate nesting vectors q(1) and q(2), which leads to the formation of charge density waves in this phosphate tungsten bronzes. The setting up of charge density wave in these bronzes can well explain the anomaly observed in its transport properties. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

The study presents a 3-year time series data on dissolved trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) in a monsoon-dominated river basin, the Nethravati River in tropical Southwestern India. The river basin lies on the metamorphic transition boundary which separates the Peninsular Gneiss and Southern Granulitic province belonging to Archean and Tertiary-Quaternary period (Western Dharwar Craton). The basin lithology is mainly composed of granite gneiss, charnockite and metasediment. This study highlights the importance of time series data for better estimation of metal fluxes and to understand the geochemical behaviour of metals in a river basin. The dissolved trace elements show seasonality in the river water metal concentrations forming two distinct groups of metals. First group is composed of heavy metals and minor elements that show higher concentrations during dry season and lesser concentrations during the monsoon season. Second group is composed of metals belonging to lanthanides and actinides with higher concentration in the monsoon and lower concentrations during the dry season. Although the metal concentration of both the groups appears to be controlled by the discharge, there are important biogeochemical processes affecting their concentration. This includes redox reactions (for Fe, Mn, As, Mo, Ba and Ce) and pH-mediated adsorption/desorption reactions (for Ni, Co, Cr, Cu and REEs). The abundance of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides as a result of redox processes could be driving the geochemical redistribution of metals in the river water. There is a Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) at different time periods, both negative and positive, in case of dissolved phase, whereas there is positive anomaly in the particulate and bed sediments. The Ce anomaly correlates with the variations in the dissolved oxygen indicating the redistribution of Ce between particulate and dissolved phase under acidic to neutral pH and lower concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. Unlike other tropical and major world rivers, the effect of organic complexation on metal variability is negligible in the Nethravati River water.

We report the synthesis as well as structural and physical properties of the bulk polycrystalline FeTe and FeTe0.5Se0.5 compounds. These samples are synthesised by the solid state-reaction method via vacuum encapsulation. Both studied compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal phase with space group P4/nmm. The parent FeTe compound shows an anomaly in resistivity measurement at around 78 K, which is due to the structural change along with a magnetic phase transition. The superconductivity in the FeTe0.5Se0.5 sample at 13 K is confirmed by the resistivity measurements. DC magnetisation along with an isothermal (M-H) loop shows that FeTe0.5Se0.5 possesses bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field is estimated through resistivity rho (T,H) measurements using Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is above 50 T with 50 % resistivity drop criterion. The origin of the resistive transition broadening under magnetic field is investigated by thermally activated flux flow. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.

BiEuO3 (BE) and BiGdO3 (BG) are synthesized by the solid-state reaction technique. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data shows that the samples are crystallized in cubic phase at room temperature having Fm3m symmetry with the lattice parameters of 5.4925(2) and 5.4712(2) A for BE and BG, respectively. Raman spectra of the samples are investigated to obtain the phonon modes of the samples. The dielectric properties of the samples are investigated in the frequency range from 42 Hz to 1.1 MHz and in the temperature range from 303 K to 673 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of impedance is performed assuming a distribution of relaxation times as confirmed by the Cole-Cole plots. The frequency-dependent maxima in the loss tangent are found to obey an Arrhenius law with activation energy similar to 1 eV for both the samples. The frequency-dependent electrical data are also analyzed in the framework of conductivity formalism. Magnetization of the samples are measured under the field cooled (EC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) modes in the temperature range from 5 K to 300 K applying a magnetic Field of 500 Oe. The FC and ZFC susceptibilities show that BE is a Van Vleck paramagnetic material with antiferromagnetic coupling at low temperature whereas BG is an anti-ferromagnetic system. The results are substantiated by the M-11 loops of the materials taken at 5 K in the ZFC mode. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

We consider minimal models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking with an extra U(1) factor in addition to the Standard Model gauge group. A U(1) charged, Standard Model singlet is assumed to be present which allows for an additional NMSSM like coupling, lambda HuHdS. The U(1) is assumed to be flavour universal. Anomaly cancellation in the MSSM sector requires additional coloured degrees of freedom. The S field can get a large vacuum expectation value along with consistent electroweak symmetry breaking. It is shown that the lightest CP even Higgs boson can attain mass of the order of 125 GeV. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. The structural and magnetic study of the pseudo-binary multiferroic (1 x)BiFeO3 (x)SrTiO3 has been investigated as a function of composition and temperature. In contrary to the previous studies, detailed examination revealed that the reported anomaly in the magnetization at x-0.30 does not occur at the composition induced rhombohedral-cubic phase boundary, but within the rhombohedral phase itself. The rhombohedral to cubic transition occurs at x > 0.4. Evidence of magneto-elastic coupling near the Neel temperature and nucleation-growth mode of the rhombohedral-cubic transformation, with both the phases coexisting over a range of temperature was found. Coastal marine environments are important links between the continents and the open ocean. The coast off Mangalore forms part of the upwelling zone along the southeastern Arabian Sea. The temperature, salinity, density, dissolved oxygen and stable oxygen isotope ratio (delta O-18) of surface waters as well as those of bottom waters off coastal Mangalore were studied every month from October 2010 to May 2011. The coastal waters were stratified in October and November due to precipitation and runoff. The region was characterised by upwelled bottom waters in October, whereas the region exhibited a temperature inversion in November. The surface and bottom waters presented almost uniform properties from December until April. The coastal waters were observed to be most dense in January and May. Comparatively cold and poorly oxygenated bottom waters during the May sampling indicated the onset of upwelling along the region. delta O-18 of the coastal waters successfully documented the observed variations in the hydrographical characteristics of the Mangalore coast during the monthly sampling period. We also noted that the monthly variability in the properties of the coastal waters of Mangalore was related to the hydrographical characteristics of the adjacent open ocean inferred from satellite-derived surface winds, sea surface height anomaly data and sea surface temperatures.

Giant grained (42 mu m) translucent Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 ceramic was fabricated by conventional sintering technique using the powders obtained via solid state reaction route. These samples were confirmed to possess tetragonal tungsten bronze structure (P4bm) at room temperature. The scanning electron microscopy established the average grain size to be close to 20 mu m. The photoluminescence studies carried out on these ceramics indicated sharp emission bands around 433 and 578 nm at an excitation wavelength of 350 nm which were attributed to band-edge emission as the band gap was 2.76 eV determined by Kubelka-Munk function. The dielectric properties of these ceramics were studied over wide frequency range (100-1 MHz) at room temperature. The decrease in dielectric constant with frequency could be explained on the basis of Koops theory. The dielectric constant and the loss were found to decrease with increasing frequency. The Curie temperature was confirmed to be similar to 370 A degrees C based on the dielectric anomaly observed when these measurements were carried out over a temperature range of 30-500 A degrees C. This shows a deviation from Curie-Weiss behaviour and hence an indicator of the occurrence of disordering in the system, the gamma = 1.23 which confirms the diffuse ferroelectric transition. These ceramics at room temperature exhibited P-E hysteresis loops, though not well saturated akin to that of their single crystalline counterparts. These are the suitable properties for ferroelectric random access memory applications.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp), a primary constituent of human bone, is usually nonstoichiometric with varying Ca/P molar ratios, with the well-known fact that Ca deficiency can cause marked reductions in its mechanical properties. To gain insights into the mechanism of this degradation, we employ first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and determine the effects of Ca deficiency on structure, vibrational, and elastic properties of HAp. Our simulation results confirm a considerable reduction in the elastic constants of HAp due to Ca deficiency, which was experimentally reported earlier. Stress-induced transformation of the Ca-deficient defected structure into a metastable state upon the application of stress could be a reason for this. Local structural stability of HAp and Ca-deficient HAp structures is assessed with full phonon dispersion studies. Further, specific signatures in the computed vibrational spectra for Ca deficiency in HAp can be utilized in experimental characterization of different types of defected HAp.

Hexagonal Ln(2)CuTiO(6) (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb) exhibits a rare combination of interesting dielectric properties, in the form of relatively large dielectric constants (epsilon' > 30), low losses, and extremely small temperature and frequency dependencies, over large ranges of temperature and frequency Choudhury et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 96, 162903 (2010) and Choudhury et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 134203 (2010)], making these compounds promising as high-k dielectric materials. The authors present a brief review of the existing literature on this interesting class of oxides, complimenting it with spectroscopic data in conjunction with first-principles calculation results, revealing a novel mechanism underlying these robust dielectric properties. These show that the large size differences in Cu2+ and Ti4+ at the B-site, aided by an inherent random distribution of CuO5 and TiO5 polyhedral units, frustrates the ferroelectric instability, inherent to the noncentrosymmetric P6(3) cm space group of this system, and gives rise to the observed relatively large dielectric constant values. Additionally, the phononic contributions to the dielectric constant are dominated primarily by mid-frequency (>100 cm(-1)) polar modes, involving mainly Ti4+ 3d(0) ions. In contrast, the soft polar phonon modes with frequencies typically less than 100 cm(-1), usually responsible for dielectric properties of materials, are found to be associated with non-d(0) Cu2+ ions and to contribute very little, giving rise to the remarkable temperature stability of dielectric properties of these compounds. The M-w 8.6 and 8.2 strike-slip earthquakes that struck the northeast Indian Ocean on 11 April 2012 resulted in coseismic deformation both at near and distant sites. The slip distribution, deduced using seismic-wave analysis for the orthogonal faults that ruptured during these earthquakes, is sufficient to predict the coseismic displacements at the Global Positioning System (GPS) sites, such as NTUS, PALK, and CUSV, but fall short at four continuous sites in the Andaman Islands region. Slip modeling, for times prior to the events, suggests that the lower portion of the thrust fault beneath the Andaman Islands has been slipping at least at the rate of 40 cm/yr, in response to the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman coseismic stress change. Modeling of GPS displacements suggests that the en echelon and orthogonal fault ruptures of the 2012 intraplate oceanic earthquakes could have possibly accelerated the ongoing slow slip, along the lower portion of the thrust fault beneath the islands with a month-long slip of 4-10 cm. The misfit to the coseismic GPS displacements along the Andaman Islands could be improved with a better source model, assuming that no local process contributed to this anomaly.

We calculate one, two and three point functions of the holographic stress tensor for any bulk Lagrangian of the form L (g(ab), R-abcd, del(e) R-abcd). Using the first law of entanglement, a simple method has recently been proposed to compute the holographic stress tensor arising from a higher derivative gravity dual. The stress tensor is proportional to a dimension dependent factor which depends on the higher derivative couplings. In this paper, we identify this proportionality constant with a B-type trace anomaly in even dimensions for any bulk Lagrangian of the above form. This in turn relates to C-T, the coefficient appearing in the two point function of stress tensors. We use a background field method to compute the two and three point function of stress tensors for any bulk Lagrangian of the above form in arbitrary dimensions. As an application we consider general situations where eta/s for holographic plasmas is less than the KSS bound.

Single crystals of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 belonging to the ferromagnetic-insulator and distorted perovskite class were grown using a four-mirror optical float zone furnace. The as-grown crystal crystallizes into an orthorhombic Pbnm structure. The spatially resolved 2D Raman scan reveals a strain-induced distribution of transition metal (TM)-oxygen (O) octahedral deformation in the as-grown crystal. A rigorous annealing process releases the strain, thereby generating homogeneous octahedral distortion. The octahedra tilt by reducing the bond angle TM-O-TM, resulting in a decline of the exchange energy in the annealed crystal. The critical behavior is investigated from the bulk magnetization. It is found that the ground state magnetic behavior assigned to the strain-free LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 crystal is of the 3D Heisenberg kind. Strain induces mean field-like interaction in some sites, and consequently, the critical exponents deviate from the 3D Heisenberg class in the as-grown crystal. The temperature-dependent Raman scattering study reveals strong spin-phonon coupling and the existence of two magnetic ground states in the same crystal. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Cu2Ge1-xInxSe3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) compounds were prepared by a solid state synthesis. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the undoped sample revealed an orthorhombic phase. The increase in doping content led to the appearance of additional peaks related to cubic and tetragonal phases along with the orthorhombic phase. This may be due to the substitutional disorder created by Indium doping. Scanning Electron Microscopy micrographs showed a continuous large grain growth with low porosity, which confirms the compaction of the samples after hot pressing. Elemental composition was measured by Electron Probe Micro Analyzer and confirmed that all the samples are in the stoichiometric ratio. The electrical resistivity (rho) systematically decreased with an increase in doping content, but increased with the temperature indicating a heavily doped semiconductor behavior. A positive Seebeck coefficient (S) of all samples in the entire temperature range reveal holes as predominant charge carriers. Positive Hall coefficient data for the compounds Cu2InxGe1-xSe3 (x = 0, 0.1) at room temperature (RT) confirm the sign of Seebeck coefficient. The trend of rho as a function of doping content for the samples Cu2InxGe1-xSe3 with x = 0 and 0.1 agrees with the measured charge carrier density calculated from Hall data. The total thermal conductivity increased with rising doping content, attributed to an increase in carrier thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity revealed 1/T dependence, which indicates the dominance of Umklapp phonon scattering at elevated temperatures. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) = 0.23 at 723 K was obtained for Cu2In0.1Ge0.9Se3. (C)2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
