ABSTRACT We document the biology and morphology of the egg, caterpillar, and pupa of Strymon crambusa (Hewitson, 1874), a Neotropical Eumaeini. In the Cerrado, the caterpillar feeds on the inflorescences and leaves of Oxalis L. S. crambusa has four larval instars, all of which are illustrated. The density of caterpillars on plants is higher than that recorded for leaf-feeding caterpillars and other flower-feeding Eumaeini, which suggests that the species is a specialist on Oxalidaceae in the Cerrado.

Proyecto de aplicación para dispositivos móviles que utiliza la Realidad Aumentada (RA) para contextualizar obras artísticas. Es un producto pensado para museos y galerías pero también para espacios exteriores que posean elementos de valor cultural. Sin embargo, y para servir de ejemplo se ha aplicado en seis piezas destacadas del Museo Episcopal de Vic. Aunque en Europa y EE.UU. los museos ya están innovando en este terreno, en España, que es donde se enmarca el proyecto, existe una carencia de elementos de mediación cultural como estos; sobre todo en los museos de arte donde las obras acostumbran a presentarse despojadas de cualquier herramienta que proporcione información complementaria. Existe, por tanto, una descontextualización del arte que crea barreras para el entendimiento del público general. De esta situación de carencia parte el objetivo principal del producto, el de aprovechar las posibilidades de la RA para mejorar la experiencia y el diálogo entre el visitante y la obra, aportando conocimiento y fomentando el aprendizaje.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), strives to ensure that Iowa’s system of public airports is positioned to meet the needs of businesses, residents, and visitors to our state. Airports must be accessible and positioned to safely meet different levels of aviation activity. In partnership with the FAA and various cities, counties, and airport authorities, the Iowa DOT helps to direct the systematic development of public airports. This report is a summary of a more comprehensive technical report that outlines a strategic plan for improving the performance of airports in Iowa over the next 20 years. More information on the technical report and on individual reports prepared for each of the public airports can be obtained from the Iowa DOT, Office of Aviation website at www.iawings.com. The Iowa Aviation System Plan provides the Iowa DOT with an important tool to monitor the ability of airports to meet customer needs. The plan also provides a means to measure the effects of investment on the performance of the Iowa Aviation System. Over the next 20 years, federal, state, local, and private funding will be needed to ensure that the aviation system meets goals established in this study. It is estimated that at least $821 million will be needed over the next 20 years if airports in Iowa are to respond to objectives set by the system plan. In future years, the plan will enable the Iowa DOT to measure system performance. By tracking key indicators for the airport system, it will be possible for the Iowa DOT and the FAA to formulate strategies for responding to Iowa’s air transportation needs. Secondary growth of the vasculature results in the thickening of plant structures and continuously produces xylem tissue, the major biological carbon sink. Little is known about the developmental control of this quantitative trait, which displays two distinct phases in Arabidopsis thaliana hypocotyls. The later phase of accelerated xylem expansion resembles the secondary growth of trees and is triggered upon flowering by an unknown, shoot-derived signal. We found that flowering-dependent hypocotyl xylem expansion is a general feature of herbaceous plants with a rosette growth habit. Flowering induction is sufficient to trigger xylem expansion in Arabidopsis. By contrast, neither flower formation nor elongation of the main inflorescence is required. Xylem expansion also does not depend on any particular flowering time pathway or absolute age. Through analyses of natural genetic variation, we found that ERECTA acts locally to restrict xylem expansion downstream of the gibberellin (GA) pathway. Investigations of mutant and transgenic plants indicate that GA and its signaling pathway are both necessary and sufficient to directly trigger enhanced xylogenesis. Impaired GA signaling did not affect xylem expansion systemically, suggesting that it acts downstream of the mobile cue. By contrast, the GA effect was graft transmissible, suggesting that GA itself is the mobile shoot-derived signal.

Fertility and flower development are both controlled in part by jasmonates, fatty acid-derived mediators produced via the activity of 13-lipoxygenases (13-LOXs). The Arabidopsis thaliana Columbia-0 reference genome is predicted to encode four of these enzymes and it is already known that one of these, LOX2, is dispensable for fertility. In this study, the roles of the other three 13-LOXs (LOX3, LOX4 and LOX6) were investigated in single and double mutants. Four independent lox3 lox4 double mutants assembled with different mutated lox3 and lox4 alleles had fully penetrant floral phenotypes, displaying abnormal anther maturation and defective dehiscence. The plants were no longer self-fertile and pollen was not viable. Fertility in the double mutant was restored genetically by complementation with either the LOX3 or the LOX4 cDNAs and biochemically with exogenous jasmonic acid. Furthermore, deficiency in LOX3 and LOX4 causes developmental dysfunctions, compared to wild type; lox3 lox4 double mutants are taller and develop more inflorescence shoots and flowers. Further analysis revealed that developmental arrest in the lox3 lox4 inflorescence occurs with the production of an abnormal carpelloid flower. This distinguishes lox3 lox4 mutants from the wild type where developmentally typical flower buds are the terminal inflorescence structures observed in both the laboratory and in nature. Our studies of lox3 lox4 as well as other jasmonic acid biosynthesis and perception mutants show that this plant hormone is not only required for male fertility but also involved in global proliferative arrest.

Introduction: Intoxications with colchicine usually occur by ingestion of meadow saffron leaves (Colchicum autumnale) which are mistakenly collected for alimentary purposes instead of the leaves of crow garlic (Allium ursinum). Colchicine, the main alkaloid of Colchicum autumnale, is present in all parts of the plant. We report a rarer source of mistake, i.e. between the flowers of Colchicum autumnale and Crocus sativus. The similarity in this case is limited to the appearance of the flowers, but Colchicum autumnale, which is also flowering in autumn, lacks the crimson stigma from which the saffron spice is derived from Crocus sativus. Case report: A 47-year-old woman collected the stamens of a flower resembling Crocus sativus for use as saffron. Her knowledge about Crocus sativus was limited to having seen this plant previously at a museum of saffron (Mund, Switzerland). She prepared a meal with rice using three pinches of ''saffron'' for ten tablespoons of rice. She and her 8-year-old child, both ate the usual amount of rice (6 and 2 tablespoons, respectively). The 2 brothers (4- and 9-years-old) only ate 3 teaspoons of rice each. A slightly bitter taste and the absence of a yellow colouration were peculiar. Three to four hours after the meal, the mother developed nausea and contacted the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre, suspecting a plant misidentification. All family members were referred to the regional university hospital for administration of oral activated charcoal. No other symptoms were reported, notably no symptoms in the 8-year-old boy and his brothers. Colchicine serum concentration (blood sample obtained 15 hours after ingestion) measured by HPLC-mass spectrometry was 0.36 mg/L for the mother, and 0.13 mg/L for the 8-year-old child, respectively (therapeutic levels: 0.30-2.5 mg/L). Conclusion: This report demonstrates that a significant amount of colchicine may be absorbed even after ingestion of very small quantities of Colchicum autumnale, which in this case was confused with Crocus sativus. Serum colchicine concentrations in the sub-/therapeutic range can be quantified by HPLC-mass spectrometry, which allows a very sensitive and specific detection of this alkaloid in blood and urine.

Pentagon-classified navigation systems are designed and tested. Genetically-superior, drought resistant triple-stacked corn hybrids exponentially improve corn and soybean yields. Scientists discover a simple flower, the marigold, unlocks astonishing potential as a change agent to improve the world’s health. All achieved or discovered in Iowa, the common denominator among all of these extraordinary activities is the intensive research and development efforts involved in bringing them to market. For businesses heavily dependent on research and development, one of their strategic advantages of conducting that world-changing research in Iowa is the state’s Research Activities Credit, commonly referred to as the Research and Development tax credit. Whether a company’s specific strategy is planting a stake into emerging markets, expanding its market leadership position, or paving technological inroads to gain market share, the success of those efforts is largely dependent on the company’s preceding work in research and development. Iowa recognizes how significant these resulting innovations are to long-term business growth and stability. Even though the federal research credits have fluctuated with intermittent expiration dates and reinstatement periods, Iowa has remained consistent in its support for the Research Activities Credit over theyears.

Both N excess and deficiency may affect cotton yield and quality. It would therefore be useful to base the N management fertilization on the monitoring of the nutritional status. This study investigated the correlations among the following determination methods of the N nutritional status of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., var. Latifolia): chlorophyll readings (SPAD-502®, Minolta), specific-ion nitrate meter (Nitrate Meter C-141, Horiba-Cardy®), and laboratory analysis (conventional foliar diagnosis). Samples were taken weekly from two weeks before flowering to the fifth week after the first flower. The experiment was conducted on the Fazenda Santa Tereza, Itapeva, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The crop was fertilized with 40 kg ha-1 N at planting and 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg ha-1 of side-dressed N. The range of leaf N contents reported as adequate for samples taken 80-90 days after plant emergence (traditional foliar diagnosis) may be used as reference from the beginning of flowering when the plant is not stressed. Specific-ion nitrate meter readings can be used as a nutritional indicator of cotton nutrition from one week after pinhead until the third week of flowering. In this case, plants are well-nourished when readings exceed 8,000 mg L-1 NO3-. The chlorophyll meter can also be used to estimate the nutritional status of cotton from the third week of flowering. In this case the readings should be above 48 in well-nourished plants.

It offers descriptions of various landscape designs or planting styles used within or adjacent to Iowa’s highway rights-of-way, as well as various plant profiles. In addition, this guide will help you learn more about the value of plants and their contribution to our environment and society. This publication is written for persons having little or no formal training in botany, and technical terminology has been kept to the minimum necessary to maintain standards of accuracy and conciseness in the descriptions. Plants are known by common names and botanical names. Most people prefer to use common names because they are easier to spell and say. Both have been used in this publication. Botanical names are taken from Latin, Greek or “Latinized” words of other languages. Each plant species has a unique botanical name, consisting of the genus, followed by the species. Some botanical names contain additional words after the species name to designate cultivars or subspecies. Plant species are grouped into families by flower structure. Family names are Latin, so the associated common family names are included in parenthesis. Sources of information for this publication are not cited within the text to save space, avoid repetition and make it more readable. However, all references used are included in the bibliography at the end of this publication.

Since the introduction of expanded levels of intrastate service on October 30, 2006, Amtrak trains in Illinois have produced impressive gains in both ridership and ticket revenue. This success and continuing stakeholder support has given rise to a formal request from the Illinois Department of Transportation (“Ill. DOT”) to Amtrak to develop a feasibility study regarding possible service consisting of a morning and an evening train in each direction between Chicago and the Quad Cities. The area between Chicago and the Quad Cities includes many rapidly growing communities. From Chicago toward the West and South, many towns and cities have experienced double digit growth increases in population since the year 2000. Southern DuPage, Cook and Will counties have seen especially strong growth, pressuring highway infrastructure, utilities, and schools. Community development and highway congestion are readily apparent when traveling the nearly 3 hour, 175 mile route between Chicago and the Quad Cities. As information, there are only three weekday round trip bus frequencies available between Chicago and the Quad Cities. The Quad City International Airport offers a total of 10 daily scheduled round trip flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport via two separate carriers flying regional jets. The Quad Cities (Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf) are located along the Mississippi River. Nearly 60% of its visitors are from the Chicago area. With dozens of miles of scenic riverfront, river boating, casinos, and thousands of acres of expansive public spaces, the Quad Cities area is a major draw from both Iowa and Illinois. The huge Rock Island Arsenal, one of the largest military arsenals in the country and located along the river, is transitioning to become the headquarters of the United States First Army. As will be discussed later in the report, there is only one logical rail route through the Quad Cities themselves. The Iowa Interstate Railroad operates through the Quad Cities along the river and heads west through Iowa. The Quad Cities are considering at least three potential locations for an Amtrak station. A study now underway supported by several local stakeholders will recommend a site which will then be considered, given available local and other financial support. If Amtrak service were to terminate in the Quad Cities, an overnight storage track of sufficient length along with ample parking and certain other requirements covered elsewhere in the report would be required.

BACKGROUND A previous study showed that the glucocorticoid dexamethasone, at doses of 100 ¿g/kg and above, inhibited leucocyte adhesion to rat mesenteric postcapillary venules activated with interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß), as assessed by videomicroscopy. AIMS To identify whether the adhesion molecule, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), or the chemokine KC could be targeted by the steroid to mediate its antiadhesive effect. METHODS Rat mesenteries were treated with IL-1ß (20 ng intraperitoneally) and the extent of leucocyte adhesion measured at two and four hours using intravital microscopy. Rats were treated with dexamethasone, and passively immunised against ICAM-1 or KC. Endogenous expression of these two mediators was validated by immunohistochemistry, ELISA, and the injection of specific radiolabelled antibodies. RESULTS Dexamethasone greatly reduced IL-1ß induced leucocyte adhesion, endothelial expression of ICAM-1 in the postcapillary venule, and release of the mast cell derived chemokine KC. Injection of specific antibodies to the latter mediators was also extremely effective in downregulating (>80%) IL-1ß induced leucocyte adhesion. CONCLUSIONS Induction by IL-1ß of endogenous ICAM-1 and KC contributes to leucocyte adhesion to inflamed mesenteric vessels. Without excluding other possible mediators, these data clearly show that dexamethasone interferes with ICAM-1 expression and KC release from mast cells, resulting in suppression of leucocyte accumulation in the bowel wall, which is a prominent feature of several gastrointestinal pathologies.

Summary Gynodioecy, the joint occurrence of females and hermaphrodites within natural populations, is a widely studied mating system ever since Darwin (1877). It is an exceptional mating system because continuous selection is necessary to maintain it. Since females only reproduce through ovules whereas hermaphrodites transmit genes through ovules and pollen, larger female fitness, in terms of seed output, is required to allow their maintenance. Two non-exclusive mechanisms can account for the maintenance of females. First, as females do not produce pollen they can reallocate their resources towards a higher ovule production. Second, hermaphrodites can self- and cross-fertilize whereas females are obligate outcrossers. Thus hermaphrodites should partly suffer from inbreeding depression (i.e.: the fitness decline of inbred relative to outbred individuals) and thereby produce less fit progeny than females. This thesis investigated the effects of self- and cross-fertilization of heimaphrodites over two consecutive generations. Inbreeding depression increased across the successive stages of the life- cycle (i.e.: from "seed traits" to "reproductive traits") displaying large inbreeding depression estimates (up to 0.76). This investigation not only detected large inbreeding depression estimates but also detected mechanisms involved in the maintenance of inbreeding depression. For instance cryptic self-incompatibility which is here a larger in vivo pollen performance of distant pollen compared to self-pollen; the expression of inbreeding depression especially in late life-cycle stages, and the appearance of females in the progeny of selfed hermaphrodites. The female biased sex ratio in the progeny of selfed hermaphrodites was a surprising result and could either come from the sex determining mechanisms (complex nucleo-cytoplasmic interaction(s)) and/or from inbreeding depression. Indeed, we not only got females and hermaphrodites but also partial male-sterile (PMS) individuals (i.e.: individuals with differing number of viable stamens). We detected that inbred pollen bearing plants (excluding females) have less viable stamens per flower than outbred plants. A positive correlation was detected between inbreeding depression for the number of viable stamens per flower and the difference in sex ratio between inbred and outbred individuals. A positive relationship was also detected between inbreeding depression for pollen viability and inbreeding depression for number of viable stamens per flower. Each correlation can either account for pleiotropic effects (a major gene acting on the two considered traits) or linkage disequilibrium between genes controlling each of the two related traits. If we hypothesize that these correlations are due to a major gene with pleiotropic effects, the positive relationship between inbreeding depression for number of viable stamens per flower and inbreeding depression for pollen viability showed that deleterious alleles present on a major gene coding for pollen production and viability depressed male fitness within inbred plants. The positive relationship between sex ratio difference between inbred and outbred individuals and inbreeding depression for number of viable stamens per flower indicates that (1) either number of viable stamens per flower is, in addition to inbreeding, also affected by the loci coding for sex determinism or, (2) the presence of females within the progeny of selfed hermaphrodites is a consequence of large inbreeding depression inhibiting pollen production, or (3) sex is here determined by a combination of loci coding for sex expression and inbreeding depression for male reproductive traits. In conclusion, Silene vulgaris has been shown to be a good model for understanding the evolution of mating systems that promote outbreeding. Résumé La gynodïoécie est définie comme étant la présence simultanée d'hermaphrodites et de femelles au sein de populations naturelles d'une même espèce. Ce système de reproduction a toujours fasciné le monde scientifique depuis Darwin, comme en témoigne ses écrits (1876, 1877) sur les systèmes de reproduction chez les plantes. Les femelles ne transmettent leurs gènes qu'à travers leurs ovules alors que les hermaphrodites transmettent leurs gènes à la fois par la voie mâle (le pollen) et la voie femelle (les ovules). La condition pour que la gynodïoécie se maintienne nécessite donc une fitness de la fonction femelle plus élevée chez les femelles que chez les hermaphrodites. Deux mécanismes mutuellement non exclusifs peuvent expliquer le maintien des femelles au sein de ces populations gynodioïques. D'une part, les femelles peuvent réallouer les ressources non utilisées pour la production de pollen et peuvent par conséquent produire plus d'ovules. D'autre part, la reproduction des femelles ne peut se faire que par allo-fécondation alors que les hermaphrodites, peuvent se reproduire à la fois par auto- et allo-fécondation. L'autofécondation s'accompagne en général d'une diminution de fitness de la descendance relativement à la progéniture issue d'allo-fécondation ; ce phénomène est connu sous le nom de dépression de consanguinité. Cette thèse avait pour but de mettre en évidence une éventuelle dépression de consanguinité chez Silene vulgaris, une espèce gynodioïque. Des hermaphrodites, issus de trois vallées alpines, ont été auto- et allo¬fécondés sur deux générations successives. La dépression de consanguinité pouvant s'exprimer à tous les stades de vie d'un individu, plusieurs traits de fitness, allant du nombre de graines par fruit à la production de gamètes ont été mesurés sur différents stades de vie successifs. L'estimation de la dépression de consanguinité totale atteignait des valeurs allant de 0.52 à 0.76 selon la vallée considérée, ce qui indiquerait que les hermaphrodites ont tout intérêt à limiter l'autofécondation et que les femelles ne devraient pas avoir de peine à subsister dans les vallées étudiées. Par la même occasion des mécanismes diminuant la purge potentielle du fardeau génétique, et permettant ainsi le maintien du « niveau » de dépression de consanguinité et par conséquence le maintien de la gynodïoécie ont été mis en évidence. En effet, nos résultats montrent que la dépression de consanguinité s'exprimait tard dans le cycle de vie permettant ainsi à un certain nombre individus consanguins de transmettre leurs allèles délétères à la génération suivante. D'autre part, la croissance in vivo des tubes polliniques d'auto-pollen était plus lente que celle de l'allo-pollen et donc en situation de compétition directe, les ovules devraient plutôt être issus d'allo-fécondation, diminuant ainsi les chances de purges d'allèles délétères. Enfin, l'apparition de femelles dans la progéniture d'hermaphrodites autofécondés diminue aussi les chances de purge d'allèles délétères. Il nous a été impossible de déterminer si l'apparition de femelles dans la descendance d'hermaphrodites autofécondés était due au déterminisme génétique du sexe ou si la différence de sexe ratio entre la descendance auto- et allo-fécondée était due à une éventuelle dépression de consanguinité inhibant la production de pollen. Nous avons observé que S. vulgaris ne présentaient pas uniquement des hermaphrodites et des femelles mais aussi toute sorte d'individus intermédiaires avec un nombre variable d'étamines viables. Nous avons pu mettre' en évidence des corrélations positives entre (1) la différence de sexe ratio (la proportion d'individus produisant du pollen) entre individus consanguins et non consanguins et une estimation de la dépression de consanguinité pour le nombre d'étamines viables d'individus produisant du pollen, ainsi qu'entre (2) la dépression de consanguinité pour le nombre d'étamines viables et celle estimée pour la viabilité du pollen. Chaque corrélation indique soit l'effet d'un (ou plusieurs) gène(s) pléiotropique(s), soit un déséquilibre de liaison entre les gènes. En considérant que ces corrélations sont le résultat d'effet pléiotropiques, la relation entre le nombre d'étamines viables par fleur et la viabilité du pollen, indiquerait un effet négatif de la consanguinité sur la production et la viabilité du pollen due partiellement à un gène majeur. La seconde corrélation indiquerait soit que les gènes responsables de la détermination du sexe agissent aussi sur l'expression de la fonction mâle soit que l'expression du sexe est sujette à la dépression de consanguinité, ou encore un mélange des deux. Termed the “silent epidemic,” traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most debilitating outcome of injury, and is characterized by the irreversibility of its damages, long-term effects on quality of life and healthcare costs. The latest data available from the CDC estimate that nationally, 52,000 people die each year from TBI2. In Iowa, TBI is a major public health problem. The numbers and rates of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits due to TBIs are steadily increasing. From 2006 to 2008, there were on average 545 injury deaths per year. Among the injured Iowans, TBI constituted nearly 30 percent (545) of all injury deaths, ten percent (1,591) of people hospitalized and seven percent (17,696) of ED visitors. 3 The state of Iowa has been supporting secondary prevention services to TBI survivors for several years. An Iowa organization that has made a significant effort in assisting TBI survivors is the Brain Injury Association of Iowa (BIAIA). The BIAIA administers the IBIRN program in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) through HRSA TBI Implementation grant funding and state appropriations.
