Semiconductor fabrication process begins with photolithography. Preparing a photo mask is the key process step in photolithography. The photo mask was fabricated by inscribing patterns directly onto a soda lime glass with the help of a laser beam, as it is easily controllable. Laser writer LW405-A was used for preparing the mask in this study. Exposure wavelength of 405 nm was used, with which 1.2 mu m feature size can be written in direct write-mode over the soda lime glass plate. The advantage of using the fabricated mask is that it can be used to design back contacts for thin film Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. To investigate the process capability of LW405-A, same pattern with different line widths was written on soda lime glass samples at different writing speeds. The pattern was inscribed without proximity effect and stitching errors, which was characterized using optical microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). It was proven that writing speed of a mask-writer is decided according to the intended feature size and line width. As the writing speed increases, the edges of the patterns become rougher due to uneven scattering of the laser beam. From the fabricated mask, the solar cell can be developed embedding both the contacts at the bottom layer, to increase the absorption of solar radiation on the top surface effectively by increasing light absorption area.

The Dy3+ doped Y3-xDyxFe5O12 (x=0-3) nanopowders were prepared using microwave hydrothermal route. The structural and morphological studies were analyzed using transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer and field emission scanning electron microscope. The nanopowders were sintered at 900 degrees C/90 min using microwave furnace. Dense ceramics with theoretical density of around 95% was obtained. Ferro magnetic resonance (FMR) spectrum and microwave absorption spectrum of Dy3+ doped YIG were studied, the signal exhibits a resonance character for all Dy3+ variations. It was observed that the location of the FMR signal peak at the field axes monotonically shifts to higher field with increasing Dy3+ content. The dielectric and magnetic properties (epsilon', epsilon `', mu' and mu `') of Dy3+ doped YIG were studied over a wide range of frequency (1-50 GHz). With increase of Dy3+ both epsilon' and mu' decreased. The low values of dielectric, magnetic properties and broad distribution of FMR line width of these ceramics are opening the real opportunity to use them for microwave devices above K- band frequency. Ultra-fast two-step anodization method is developed for obtaining ordered nano-pores on aluminium (Al) foil. First anodization was carried out for 10 min, followed by 3 min of second anodization at high voltage (150 V) compared to previous reports of anodization times of 12 h (40-60 V). The pore dimensions on anodized alumina are 180 nm for pore diameter and 130 nm for inter-pore distance. It was evident that by increasing the anodization voltage to 150 V, the diameter of the pores formed was above 150 nm. The electrolyte and its temperature affect the shape and size of the pore formation. At lower anodization temperature, controlled pore formation was observed. The anodized samples were characterized using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to determine the pore diameter and inter-pore distance. Using UV-Visible spectroscopy, the reflectance spectra of anodized samples were measured. The alumina (Al2O3) peaks were identified by x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The x-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the Al 2p peak at 73.1 eV along with the oxygen O 1s at 530.9 eV and carbon traces C 1s at 283.6 eV.

The authors report the growth of carbon nanowalls in freestanding, three-dimensional aggregates by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Carbon nanowalls extrude from plasma sites into three-dimensional space. The growth is catalyst-free and not limited by nucleating surfaces. The growth mechanism is discussed and compared with similar carbon nanomaterials. High surface area of as-grown carbon nanowalls indicates a potential for electrochemical applications. Field emission measurements show a low field turn-on and long-term stability. The results establish a scalable production method and possible applications using field emission or high surface area. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

The ability to grow carbon nanotubes/nanofibres (CNs) with a high degree of uniformity is desirable in many applications. In this paper, the structural uniformity of CNs produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition is evaluated for field emission applications. When single isolated CNs were deposited using this technology, the structures exhibited remarkable uniformity in terms of diameter and height (standard deviations were 4.1 and 6.3% respectively of the average diameter and height). The lithographic conditions to achieve a high yield of single CNs are also discussed. Using the height and diameter uniformity statistics, we show that it is indeed possible to accurately predict the average field enhancement factor and the distribution of enhancement factors of the structures, which was confirmed by electrical emission measurements on individual CNs in an array.

We report on the electrical characteristics of plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD)-grown, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) devices made by a new fabrication method, PMMA suspended dispersion. This method makes it possible to suspend nanotubes between metal electrodes and to remove unwanted nanotubes from the substrate. The measurements show that the MWCNTs are metallic and able to maintain a current density ∼2×106 A/cm2 for more than 15 days with a maximum current density of ∼1.8×107 A/cm2. This high current density and reliability will make PECVD-grown MWCNTs applicable to field emission cathodes. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We demonstrate the production of integrated-gate nanocathodes which have a single carbon nanotube or silicon nanowire/whisker per gate aperture. The fabrication is based on a technologically scalable, self-alignment process in which a single lithographic step is used to define the gate, insulator, and emitter. The nanotube-based gated nanocathode array has a low turn-on voltage of 25 V and a peak current of 5 μA at 46 V, with a gate current of 10 nA (i.e., 99% transparency). These low operating voltage cathodes are potentially useful as electron sources for field emission displays or miniaturizing electron-based instrumentation.

Ag nanoparticle embedded NaYF4:0.05Tb center dot chi Ce/ PVP (PVP stands for poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)) composite nanofibers have been prepared by electrospinning. A field emission scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction have been utilized to characterize the size, morphology and structure of the as-prepared electrospun nanofibers. Obvious photoluminescence (PL) of NaYF4:0.05Tb center dot 0.05Ce/PVP electrospun nanofibers due to the efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions is observed. The PL intensity of the electrospun nanofibers decreases gradually with the addition of Ag nanoparticles. No obvious surface plasmon resonance enhanced luminescence is observed. The reasons for the weakening of the emission intensity with the addition of Ag nanoparticles have also been discussed in this work.

NaYF4: 0.02Er center dot xYb-PVP composite nanofibers with the diameter of similar to 400 nm have been prepared by electrospinning. Field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction have been utilized to characterize morphology and structure of the as-prepared electrospun nanofibers. Their up-conversion luminescence is investigated under a 980-nm excitation. Green (538 and 520 nm), red (6-55 nm), and blue (405 nm) emissions are observed in the up-conversion luminescence spectra, and the intensity of these three emissions changes differently with the variety of Yb content, which has been interpreted successfully in this letter. The color of NaYF4: 0.02Er center dot xYb-PVP nanolibers under a 980-nm excitation can be changed from green --> white --> yellow gradually via changing the Yb content.

The evolution of microstructure and optical properties of TiO2 sculptured thin films under thermal annealing is reported. XRD, field emission SEM, UV-Vis-NIR spectra are employed to characterize the microstructural and optical properties. It is found that the optimum annealing temperature for linear birefringence is 500 degrees C. The maximum of transmission difference for linear birefringence is up to 18%, which is more than twice of that in as-deposited thin films. In addition, the sample annealed at 500 degrees C has a minimum of column angle about 12 degrees C. The competitive process between the microstructural and optical properties is discussed in detail. Post-annealing is a useful method to improve the linear birefringence in sculptured thin films for practical applications.

Non-hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) has shown superior field emission characteristics. The understanding of the emission mechanism has been hindered by the lack of any directly measured data on the band offsets between ta-C and Si. In this paper results from direct in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of the band-offset between ta-C and Si are reported. The measurements were carried out using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition system attached directly to an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) XPS chamber via a load lock chamber. Repeated XPS measurements were carried out after monolayer depositions on in situ cleaned Si substrates. The total film thickness for each set of measurements was approximately 5 nm. Analysis of the data from undoped ta-C on n and p Si show the unexpected result that the conduction band barrier between Si and ta-C remains around 1.0 eV, but that the valence band barrier changes from 0.7 to 0.0 eV. The band line up derived from these barriers suggests that the Fermi level in the ta-C lies 0.3 eV above the valence band on both p and n+Si. The heterojunction barriers when ta-C is doped with nitrogen are also presented. The implications of the heterojunction energy barrier heights for field emission from ta-C are discussed.

We have studied two different kinds of electron tubes using a cold field emission cathode as the electron source. This cathode is an array of vertically aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes. The first device is a triode. With this device, we demonstrated the modulation at 32 GHZ of a 1.4 A/cm2 peak current density with a 82% modulation ratio. The second device is a traveling wave tube. For this device, the objective is to test a cathode delivering a 2 A/cm 2 electron beam. ©2009 IEEE.

In addition to the structural control of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the morphological control of their assemblies is crucial to realize miniaturized CNT devices. Microgradients in the thickness of catalyst are used to enrich the variety of available self-organized morphologies of CNTs. Microtrenches were fabricated in gate/spacer/cathode trilayers using a conventional self-aligned top-down process and catalyst exhibiting a microgradient in its thickness was formed on the cathode by sputter deposition through gate slits. CNTs, including single-walled CNTs, of up to 1μm in length were grown within 5-15 s by chemical vapor deposition. The tendency of thin CNTs to aggregate caused interactions between CNTs with different growth rates, yielding various morphologies dependent on the thickness of the catalyst. The field emission properties of several types of CNT assemblies were evaluated. The ability to produce CNTs with tailored morphologies by engineering the spatial distribution of catalysts will enhance their performance in devices. © 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Transmission imaging with an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) (Wet STEM) is a recent development in the field of electron microscopy, combining the simple preparation inherent to ESEM work with an alternate form of contrast available through a STEM detector. Because the technique is relatively new, there is little information available on how best to apply this technique and which samples it is best suited for. This work is a description of the sample preparation and microscopy employed by the authors for imaging bacteria with Wet STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy). Three different bacterial samples will be presented in this study: first, used as a model system, is Escherichia coli for which the contrast mechanisms of STEM are demonstrated along with the visual effects of a dehydration-induced collapse. This collapse, although clearly in some sense artifactual, is thought to lead to structurally meaningful morphological information. Second, Wet STEM is applied to two distinct bacterial systems to demonstrate the novel types of information accessible by this approach: the plastic-producing Cupriavidus necator along with wild-type and ΔmreC knockout mutants of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. Cupriavidus necator is shown to exhibit clear internal differences between bacteria with and without plastic granules, while the ΔmreC mutant of S. Typhimurium has an internal morphology distinct from that of the wild type.
