El projecte Aula Matemàtica consta de dues parts. 1. Elaborar un material d'autoaprenentatge en suport digital que cobreixi tots els temes de Matemàtiques de 1r. curs de les carreres de Ciències (Biologia, Química, etc.) i les Enginyeries. Aquest material, accessible des de qualsevol ordinador connectat a Internet, és una base de dades de problemes que els alumnes poden utilitzar per a treballar el temes explicats a classe, o be per cobrir deficiències a la seva formació pre-universitària. Al mateix temps, es poden realitzar exàmens, i els alumnes poden practicar amb els problemes d'examen. 2. Durant unes hores cada dia, oferir una (o diverses) aules d'informàtica al campus de la UAB amb presència de personal de suport (professors, o becaris de darrers cursos de matemàtiques o doctorat) per tal que els alumnes que vulguin (o necessitin) puguin practicar amb ajuda, i consultat els dubtes que tinguin. En la fase actual del projecte s’han fet les següents actuacions: 1. S’ha obert una aula d’informàtica amb suport de becaris a la facultat de Ciències, on a més de practicar els alumnes, s’han efectuat exàmens. 2. S’ha treballat en el programa per tal de fer-lo més amigable. 3. S’ha ampliat la base de problemes fins a 1450, i cobrir totes les assignatures de Matemàtiques i Estadística de 1r. curs de la facultat de Ciències i l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeries. 4. S’ha començat a treballar per a la utilització del programa a Secundària. 5. S’han fet avanços molt importants per tal d’incorporar problemes amb resposta oberta. 6. El programa és accessible des de qualsevol ordenador amb Internet.

La incorporació del Moodle com a eina de docència, i l’augment de hores no presencials a les diverses assignatures fa que calgui incorporar les noves tecnologies perquè els alumnes disposin de més material docent al seu abast. Però l’acumulació de material fa que només sigui útil aquell material que es guanyi a l’alumne. En aquest sentit, creiem que les animacions i les eines interactives poden ser materials atractius pels alumnes. En aquest projecte hem creat una eina d’animació interactiva perquè l’estudiant de Bioquímica practiqui i aprengui dues rutes principals del metabolisme de hidrats de carboni: la glucòlisi i la gluconeogènesi. Aquesta eina consta d’una pantalla separada en 3 zones: 1) una zona lateral que inclou la ruta metabòlica completa, i en la que l’alumne pot prémer sobre cada un dels passos que estructuren la ruta (finestra del metabolisme); 2) una zona inferior que presenta la reacció individual de la ruta metabòlica, en la que s’observa l’estructura química de les molècules i informació de l’enzim implicat en la reacció (finestra de l’enzim); i 3) una zona central en la que a través d’una animació amb Macromedia Flash MX, l’alumne observa el mecanisme químic de la reacció (finestra del mecanisme químic). Les tres zones són interactives i en prémer sobre elles donen informació, respectivament sobre la ruta completa, l’enzim de cada pas en particular i el mecanisme d’acció. A més, la finestra del mecanisme químic permet aturar en qualsevol moment la animació, tornar enrere i veure els intermediaris. Durant el segon semestre del curs 2007-2008 hem avaluat l’eina amb alumnes de Bioquímica de la Llicenciatura de Química, incorporant-la als dossier electrònics i al Moodle. Creiem que hem assolit els objectius que es proposaven: que l’alumne aprengui les dues rutes metabòliques, de manera divertida; el mecanisme de cada un dels passos de les rutes i l’estructura química dels metabòlits intermediaris de les rutes.

We analyze the impact of working and contractual conditions, particularly exposure to job risks, on the probability of acquiring a disability. We postulate a model in which this impact is mediated by the choice of occupation, with a level of risk associated to it. We assume this choice is endogenous, and that it depends on preferences and opportunities in the labour market, both of which may differ between immigrants and natives. To test this hypothesis we use data from the Continuous Sample of Working Lives of the Spanish SS system. It contains individual, job and firm information of over a million workers, including a representative sample of immigrants. We find that risk exposure increases the probability of permanent disability by 5.3%; temporary employment also influences health. Migrant status -with differences among regions of origin- significantly affects both disability and the probability of being employed in a risky occupation. Most groups of immigrants work in riskier jobs, but have lower probability of becoming disabled. Nevertheless, our theoretical hypothesis that disability and risk are jointly determined is not valid for immigrants: i.e. for them working conditions is not a matter of choice in terms of health.

Introduction: Isocyanates are sensitizing chemicals used in various industries such as polyurethane foam production or paint-related purposes. Acting as haptens recognized by T-lymphocytes, they can cause allergic asthma and rarely hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). We aim to present a case report of acute HP due to hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in a paint quality controller, a profession not generally considered at a high risk for work-related Isocyanates exposure. Case report: A 30-yr-old otherwise healthy female, light smoker working as a paint quality controller developed shortness of breath, malaise, sweating and chills at workplace six hours after handling a HDI-based hardener. Upon admission to emergency department, symptoms had progressed to severe respiratory failure. HR computer tomography (HRCT) showed bilateral ground-glass attenuation without pleural effusion. Rapid clinical and radiological improvement occurred under facial oxygen supply and systemic steroid therapy. Occupational medicine investigations revealed regular handling of HDI using latex gloves without respiratory protection. Assessment at workplace showed insufficient air renewal (1.5 times per hour), inadequate local aspiration and HDI exposure at levels of 1-4.25 ppb/m3 (Swiss Occupation Exposure Limit 5 ppb/m3). Biological monitoring after identical work procedure executed by a co-worker showed HDI exposure (5.1 micrograms hexamethylene diamine/g creatinine). Resumption of work was disadvised because of the life-threatening event. Discussion: The diagnosis of occupational HP is highly supported by classical findings on imagery and typical symptoms occurring within approved latency interval, associated with rapid clinical improvement. Although neither broncho-alveolar lavage nor specific IgG diagnosis (en route) were performed during the acute episode, various blood tests managed to rule out evidence of an infection or autoimmune disease. Other causes of HP seem unlikely as the patient did not have any recurrence of symptoms since absence from work. Workplace evaluation provided significant information on HDI exposure and allowed substantial recommendations to diminish Isocyanate exposure for the 20 still healthy laboratory co-workers. Although the entryways (air or skin) and precise mechanism of toxicity remain unclear, the present case clearly shows that Isocyanates may trigger acute HP in susceptible workers in a profession not generally considered at a high risk.

Introduction. Respiratory difficulties in athletes are common, especially in adolescents, even in the absence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Immaturity of the respiratory muscles coupling at high respiratory rates could be a potential mechanism. Whether respiratory muscle training (RMT) can positively influence it is yet unknown. Goal. We investigate the effects of RMT on ventilation and performance parameters in adolescent athletes and hypothesize that RMT will enhance respiratory capacity. Methods. 12 healthy subjects (8 male, 4 female, 17±0.5 years) from a sports/study high school class, competitively involved in various sports (minimum of 10 hours per week) underwent respiratory function testing, maximal minute ventilation (MMV) measurements and a maximal treadmill incremental test with VO2max and ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) determination. They then underwent one month of RMT (4 times/week) using a eucapnic hyperventilation device, with an incremental training program. The same tests were repeated after RMT. Results. Subjects completed 14.8 sessions of RMT, with an increase in total ventilation per session of 211±29% during training. Borg scale evaluation of the RMT session was unchanged or reduced in all subjects, despite an increase in total respiratory work. No changes (p>0.05) were observed pre/post RMT in VO2max (53.4±7.5 vs 51.6±7.7 ml/kg/min), VT2 (14.4±1.4 vs 14.0±1.1 km/h) or Speed max at end of test (16.1±1.7 vs 15.8±1.7 km/h). MVV increased by 9.2% (176.7±36.9 vs 192.9±32.6 l/min, p<0.001) and FVC by 3.3% (6.70±0.75 vs 4.85±0.76 litres, p<0.05). Subjective evaluation of respiratory sensations during exercise and daily living were also improved. Conclusions. RMT improves MMV and FVC in adolescent athletes, along with important subjective respiratory benefits, although no changes are seen in treadmill maximal performance tests and VO2max measurements. RMT can be easily performed in adolescent without side effects, with a potential for improvement in training capacity and overall well-being.

This consultation was intended to test public opinion on proposed changes to the law regulating the sale of alcohol in Northern Ireland. The proposed changes relate to-    regulating the sale of alcohol in supermarkets and off-sales premises-    regulating the sale of alcohol in pubs and other on-sales premises-    regulating private member clubs-    codes of practice Key points from IPH response -    IPH welcomes the opportunity to submit our views on this review of regulations related to the sale and supply of alcohol in Northern Ireland. IPH notes that the reduction of alcohol-related harm is a stated aim of the review. -    International evidence clearly supports the role of regulation of the sale and supply of alcohol in reducing alcohol consumption and in reducing alcohol-related harm. -    The consultation document does not present any meaningful estimation of the scale or nature of potential positive or negative effects on alcohol-related harm arising from the proposed changes. On this basis, IPH recommends that a Health Impact Assessment should be conducted on the proposed regulations. -    IPH shares the concerns raised in respect of increases in the number of people drinking at home and the availability of large volumes of low cost alcohol in supermarkets. In this regard, we welcome the proposals to enhance the regulation of sale of alcohol in mixed trading premises by more stringent structural separation measures and restricted advertising. -    IPH wishes to emphasise the importance of the work underway to explore the introduction of minimum unit pricing of alcohol on the island of Ireland as this measure will be significant in enhancing the proposals on regulating sale of alcohol in mixed trading premises -    In light of evidence of increased alcohol consumption and harm associated with increased hours and days of sale of alcohol, IPH does not support the proposal to introduce additional late opening hours or extended drinking up time.

Determining the time since discharge of spent cartridges found on a crime scene may be very useful in firearm investigations. The potential of small calibre munitions was barely studied before and this work did therefore focus on that problematic. The first step was to optimize the detection potential of solidphase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry detector (GC/MS). This allowed determining the organic volatile composition of empty cartridges immediately after a gunshot. Identification of 32 detected compounds was confirmed by the analysis of reference substances. Preliminary aging studies over 32 hours were carried out on selected target compounds to evaluate their potential for the dating of shotguns.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the prevalence of lifetime recourse to prostitution (LRP) among men in the general population of Switzerland from a trend and cohort perspective. METHODS: Using nine repeated representative cross-sectional surveys from 1987 to 2000, age-specific estimates of LRP were computed. Trends and period effect were analysed as the evolution of cross-sectional population estimates within age groups and overall. Cohort analysis relied on cohorts constructed from the 1989 survey and followed in subsequent waves. Age and cohort effects were modelled using logistic regression and non-parametric monotone regression. RESULTS: Whereas prevalence for the younger groups was found to be logically lower, there was no consistent increasing or decreasing trend over the years; there was no significant period effect. For the 17-30 year age group, the mean estimate over 1987-2000 was 11.5% (range 8.3 to 12.7%); for the 31-45 year group, the mean was 21.5% (range over 1989-2000 20.3 to 23.0%). Regarding cohort analysis, the prevalence of LRP was found to increase steeply in the youngest ages before reaching a plateau near the age of 40 years. At the age of 43 years, the prevalence was estimated to be 22.6% (95% CI 21.1% to 24.1%). CONCLUSIONS: The steep increase in the cohort-wise prevalence of LRP in younger ages calls for a concentration of prevention activities in young people. If the plateauing at approximately 40 years of age is not followed by a further increase later in life, which is not known, then consumers of paid sex would be repeat buyers only, a fact that should be taken into account by prevention.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of human capital, advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT), and new work organizational practices on firm productivity, while taking into account the synergies existing between them. This study expands current knowledge in this area in two ways. First, in contrast with previous works, we focus on AMT and not ICT (information and communication technologies). Second, we use a unique employer-employee data set for small firms in a particular area of southern Europe (Catalonia, Spain). Using a small firm data set, allows us to analyse the particular case of small and medium enterprises, since we cannot assume they have the same characteristics as large firms. The results provide evidence in favor of the complementarity hypothesis between human capital, advanced manufacturing technologies, and new work organization practices, although we show that the complementarity effects depend on what type of work organization practices are used by a firm. For small and medium Catalan firms, the only set of work organization practices that improve the benefits of human capital and technology investment are those practices which are more quality oriented, such as quality circles, problem-solving groups or total quality management.

The paper assesses the relationship between the use of alternative workplace practices (AWP) and job satisfaction. Using a unique employeremployee data set with rich information on both firm and employee characteristics we test whether there is a positive impact of AWPs on job satisfaction (motivation hypothesis) or it is negative (intensification hypothesis). We expand a growing empirical literature focusing on small and medium size firms from a southern European area. Our results show an overall positive effect, depending on the specific practice considered. We also obtain some sort of time-dependence with the effects turning from negative to positive once the practice has been implemented for some time.
