The species Formica aquilonia and F. lugubris of the mound-building red wood ants have a disjunct boreoalpine distribution in Europe. The populations of F. aquilonia in Finland, Switzerland and the British Isles show little genetic differentiation, whereas the populations of F. lugubris show considerable differentiation. The Central European populations morphologically identified as F. lugubris can be genetically divided into two groups (here called types A and B). Type B is found in the Alps and the Jura mountains, and is genetically inseparable from F. aquilonia. Type A lives sympatrically with type B in the Jura mountains and is also found in the British Isles. Sympatry of the two types in the Jura shows that these are separate species. It remains open whether type B is morphologically atypical F. aquilonia or whether it is a separate species, perhaps with a past history of introgression between F. aquilonia and F. lugubris. The gene frequencies in the Finnish populations of F. lugubris differ from those of both types A and B. Genetic differences within F. lugubris indicate that the populations have evolved separately for a long time. The social structure of F. lugubris colonies also shows geographic variation. The nests in Finland and the British Isles seem to be mainly monogynous and monodomous, whereas the nests in Central Europe are polygynous and form polydomous colonies. F. aquilonia has polygynous and polydomous colonies in all populations studied.

Mountains and mountain societies provide a wide range of goods and services to humanity, but they are particularly sensitive to the effects of global environmental change. Thus, the definition of appropriate management regimes that maintain the multiple functions of mountain regions in a time of greatly changing climatic, economic, and societal drivers constitutes a significant challenge. Management decisions must be based on a sound understanding of the future dynamics of these systems. The present article reviews the elements required for an integrated effort to project the impacts of global change on mountain regions, and recommends tools that can be used at 3 scientific levels (essential, improved, and optimum). The proposed strategy is evaluated with respect to UNESCO's network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves (MBRs), with the intention of implementing it in other mountain regions as well. First, methods for generating scenarios of key drivers of global change are reviewed, including land use/land cover and climate change. This is followed by a brief review of the models available for projecting the impacts of these scenarios on (1) cryospheric systems, (2) ecosystem structure and diversity, and (3) ecosystem functions such as carbon and water relations. Finally, the cross-cutting role of remote sensing techniques is evaluated with respect to both monitoring and modeling efforts. We conclude that a broad range of techniques is available for both scenario generation and impact assessments, many of which can be implemented without much capacity building across many or even most MBRs. However, to foster implementation of the proposed strategy, further efforts are required to establish partnerships between scientists and resource managers in mountain areas.

A simplified taxonomic classification in 3 groups of the genus Colaniella LIKHAREV is proposed: Colaniella ex gr. parva, Colaniella ex gr. lepida, Colaniella ex gr. minima. The repartition of the eight main Colaniella biofacies is given and the paleogeographic distribution of this genus is presented on a late Permian map configuration. New late Permian localities with Colaniella ex gr. parva have been found: Aegina island (Greece), Emmarat in the northern Alborz (Iran) and Wadi Wasit in the central Oman Mountains. The stratigraphic range of Colaniella ex gr. parva is much longer than previously accepted even by specialists. This range begins in the early Midian (Abadehian) and ends in the late Changhsingian (Dorashamian), very close to the range of the genus. For environmental reasons and slow eastward migration we have apparent shorter ranges in the Eastern part of the Tethyan domain.

Geological, hydrogeological and geochemical surveys were carried out in the Piedilago area (Ossola-Simplon region) in order to investigate the geothermal resources present in this area. Following these surface exploration efforts an exploratory geothermal well of 248 m was drilled in 1991. It discharges a thermal water with temperatures up to 43 degrees C and calcium (sodium) sulphate composition with a TDS close to 1350 mg/l. Chemical geothermometers suggest a reservoir temperature close to 45 degrees C indicating that the well virtually produces the pure uncooled thermal water. The Piedilago ex-ample is here considered as the departure point to establish both general criteria for further geothermal investigations in young mountains chains and taking into consideration all the available data on geology and fluid geochemistry of thermal systems in the Ossola-Simplon region, to constrain a geothermal model for the Lower Pennine Zone.

Secondary contact zones have the potential to shed light on the mode and rate at which reproductive isolation accumulates during allopatric speciation. We investigated the population genetics of a contact zone between two highly divergent lineages of field voles (Microtus agrestis) in the Swiss Jura mountains. To shed light on the processes underlying introgression, we used maternally, paternally, and bi-parentally inherited markers. Though the two lineages maintained a strong genetic structure, we found some hybrids and evidence of gene flow. The extent of introgression varied with the mode of inheritance, being highest for mtDNA and absent for the Y chromosome. In addition, introgression was asymmetric, occurring only from the Northern to the Southern lineage. Both patterns seem parsimoniously explained by neutral processes linked to differences in effective sizes and sex-biased dispersal rates. The lineage with lower effective population size was also the more introgressed, and the mode-of-inheritance effect correlated with the male-biased dispersal rate of microtine rodents. We cannot exclude, however, that Haldane's effect contributed to the latter, as we found a marginally significant deficit in males (the heterogametic sex) among hybrids. We propose a possible demographic scenario to account for the patterns documented, and empirical extensions to further investigate this contact zone.

The Oman Mountains provide some of the best sections of Permian and Triassic sediments from ocean sea floor to base-of-slope environments related to the distal South Tethyan margin. The central part of the range exposes the Buday'ah section of oceanic sediments in the so-called "Hawasina allochtons". The locality of Wadi Maqam in the north-western part of the Oman Mountains is among places where the thick Permian-Triassic base-of-slope sediments is exposed (Baud et al., 2001). Overlying 400 m of middle Permian limestones and dolomites, the upper Permian sediments consist of 50 m of ≈ 10 cm thick beds of cherts and dolomites rich in sponge spicules. The top of the Permian units is well bioturbated lime mudstone-wackestone, devoid of cherts and dated as late Changhsingian (Krystyn in Richoz et al., 2005). The boundary yellow shales are overlain by very thinly bedded, laminated microbial platy lime mudstone with H. parvus. The dramatic loss of the burrowing infauna indicates the appearance of oxygen-poor water. These Induan sediments are about 25 m thick and show at the top the first calcirudites, commonly clast-supported (edge-wise conglomerates), and are characterized by tabular clasts representing the sub- in situ reworking of the laminated, platy calcilutite. The very thick Smithian overlying litho-unit (up to 900 m) marks the onset on the base-of-slope of a deep-marine basin in which carbonate submarine fan deposits developed This very thick unit consists essentially of platy limestones, calcarenites and calcirudites. It comprises mainly grey-beige calcilutite, laminated and flaggy, interbedded with sparse beds of fine-grained calcarenite in cm beds. Channelized beds of intraformational calcirudite are also part of this succession which constitutes the greater part of the outcrop available. During the Spathian to Anisian, the sedimentation changes to terrigenous mudstone and siltstone that ended with Ladinian radiolarites.

Differences in seasonal migratory behaviours are thought to be an important component of reproductive isolation in many organisms. Stable isotopes have been used with success in estimating the location and qualities of disjunct breeding and wintering areas. However, few studies have used isotopic data to estimate the movements of hybrid offspring in species that form hybrid zones. Here, we use stable hydrogen to estimate the wintering locations and migratory patterns of two common and widespread migratory birds, Audubon's (Setophaga auduboni) and myrtle (S. coronata) warblers, as well as their hybrids. These two species form a narrow hybrid zone with extensive interbreeding in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, which has been studied for over four decades. Isotopes in feathers grown on the wintering grounds or early on migration reveal three important patterns: (1) Audubon's and myrtle warblers from allopatric breeding populations winter in isotopically different environments, consistent with band recovery data and suggesting that there is a narrow migratory transition between the two species, (2) most hybrids appear to overwinter in the south-eastern USA, similar to where myrtle warblers are known to winter, and (3) some hybrid individuals, particularly those along the western edge of the hybrid zone, show Audubon's-like isotopic patterns. These data suggest there is a migratory divide between these two species, but that it is not directly coincident with the centre of the hybrid zone in the breeding range. We interpret these findings and discuss them within the context of previous research on hybrid zones, speciation and migratory divides.

In the last 50 years, concern about the loss of lichen diversity associated with forest management and forest fragmentation has led to many studies designed to assess patterns and monitor trends of lichen biodiversity in forests worldwide. However there are surprisingly few studies focusing on the effect of natural disturbance for epiphytic lichens in forest ecosystems and, especially, on how these changes affect the relationships between epiphytic lichens and other organisms. The major goal of this thesis was to characterize and valuate the epiphytic lichens in the Baixo Tamega region (northern Portugal) and to assess its vulnerability to several drivers of change, particularly fire. The study area is located in Aboboreira and Castelo, a mountain area with 105 km2 and a top altitude of approximately 1000 m.a.s.l. In this region, fire is one of the worst natural catastrophes not only because of its high frequency and wide extension but also because of their enormous destructive effects. This thesis has included three case studies that proved the need to develop management and conservation actions for the area. In the first study we assessed the epiphytic lichen diversity in the oak woods of the Aboboreira and Castelo mountains. Results have revealed high diversity value and presence of a lichen community that has suffered general decline throughout Europe. The second study has addressed the impact of fire over epiphytic lichens and community recovering patterns. Results observed along the fire gradient showed that the most common and abundant lichen species establish themselves early in post-fire gradient while “old-growth” associated lichens tend to recover slowly along the same gradient. The third study intended to evaluate the potential use of selected lichen species or groups as biodiversity surrogates, in a scenario of fire-controlled ecological changes. Results showed that the use of epiphytic lichens as surrogates of bryophyte and vascular plant diversity should consider not only species richeness and composition, but also occurrence of disturbing factors, such fire. among the studied groups, lichen genera is the only group that can be used as surrogate of total epiphytic lichen diversity, independently of fire induced changes
