Abstract: In her July 15, 2013 interview with Martha Manning, Jane West details her time at Winthrop as a Biology major in the 1960s. Briefly, West discusses student life and Winthrop traditions, but she provides insight into her life student teaching at Florence High School. Additionally, West includes her experience in required courses like English and Math, as well as experiments conducted in her Biology courses. West concludes the interview with her overall perceptions of Winthrop. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

Objetiva-se aqui desenvolver uma longa série de textos para discussão com prioridade para trabalhos dos alunos de minhas disciplinas em Filosofia Econômica que em si já se constitui numa realização deste programa de pesquisa. Além de exercício e estímulo para os alunos atuais, pois a participação é voluntária, a série deverá servir como fonte de exemplares para atrair e orientar novos alunos. Tem-se nela uma extensão da literatura sobre o tema, mas na forma de circulação restrita. Buscar assim a critica de colegas e de todos que possam dar alguma contribuição também nos motiva determinantemente. Os textos deverão ser submetidos para apresentação em congressos e publicação em revistas acadêmicas, podendo a série eventualmente levar-nos à organização de livros.

The commitments and working requirements of abstract, applied, and art of, economics are assessed within an analogy with the fields of inert matter and life. Abstract economics is the pure logic of the phenomenon. Applied positive economics presupposes many distinct abstract sciences. Art presupposes applied economics and direct knowledge of the specificities which characterize the time-space individuality of the phenomenon. This is an indetermination clearly formulated by Senior and Mill; its connection with institutionalism is discussed. The Ricardian Vice is the habit of ignoring the indetermination; its prevalence in mainstream economics is exemplified, and its causes analyzed.

Positive socio-economics presupposes pure economics and many distinct sciences. Art presupposes socio-economics and direct knowledge of the specificities which characterize the time-space individuality of the phenomenon. This indetermination was partially formulated by Senior and Mill; graduate education in economics is considered in its light. The habit of ignoring it is the Ricardian Vice, as named by Schumpeter; the prevalence of the vice is exemplified, and its causes analyzed.

The propositions of pure economics, whatever be their generality and their truth, do not authorize normative concluaions, but cannot be ignored. The latter, namely what ought not to be done, is derivable from socio-economics. The derivation is to be qualified by the specificities of the case. I have called this the Indetermination of Senior; Wagner and Marshall were quite aware of it. The habit of ignoring it is the Ricardian Vice; Schmoller's fight may have been a reaction against the latter. The Methodenstreit was the first great paradigmatic conflict between pure and social economists.

Expõe-se um programa de pesquisa sobre a natureza incompleta do conhecimento científico, estendendo-o para análise do currículo mínimo de economia no Brasil, e a consequente formulação de propostas de mudança. Considerando os diferentes níveis de abstração na tricotomia ciência pura, aplicada e arte da ciência, observa-se que o currículo mínimo prescreve formação apropriada para a economia social ou aplicada. Conclui-se pela conveniência de mais dois anos, um para reforço da economia pura no ciclo básico, outro para a arte da economia no profissionalizante. Considera-se ainda uma especialização em economia pura, voltada apenas para ensino e pesquisa.
