Effect of La-Mg-based alloy (AB(5)) addition on Structure and electrochemical characteristics of Ti0.10Zr0.15V0.35Cr0.10Ni0.30 hydrogen storage alloy has been investigated systematically. XRD shows that the matrix phase structure is not changed after adding AB(5) alloy, however, the amount of the secondary phase increases with increasing AB(5) alloy content. The electrochemical measurements show that the plateau pressure Ti0.10Zr0.15V0.35Cr0.10Ni0.30 + x% La0.85Mg0.25Ni4.5Co0.35Al0.15 (X = 0, 1, 5, 10, 20) hydrogen storage alloys increase with increasing x, and the width of the pressure plateau first increases when x increases from 0 to 5 and then decreases as x increases further, and the maximum discharge capacity changes in the same trend.

The final structure of molten syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) sheared under different conditions was investigated by synchrotron small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques to elucidate the shear effects on sPP crystalline structure. The results obtained from the WAXD show that there is no variation on crystalline form but a little difference on the orientation of the 200 reflection. The SAXS data indicate that the lamellar thickness and long period have not been affected by shear but the lamellar orientation is dependent on shear. The experimental data of sPP crystallization from sheared melt may indicate a mesophase structure that is crucial to the shear effects on the final polymer multiscale crystalline structures.

Syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The XRD shows that exfoliated nanocomposites are formed dominantly at lower clay concentrations (less than 2%), at higher clay contents intercalated nanocomposites dominate. At the same time, the XRD indicates that the crystal structures of sPB formed in the sPB/organoclay nanocomposites do not vary, only the relative intensity of the peaks corresponding to (0 1 0) and (2 0 0)/(1 1 0) crystal planes, respectively, varies. The DSC and POM indicate that organoclay layers can improve cooling crystallization temperature, crystallization rate and reducing the spherulite sizes of sPB. TGA shows that under argon flow the nanocomposites exhibit slight decrease of thermal stability, while under oxygen flow the resistance of oxidation and thermal stability of sPB/organoclay nanocomposites were significantly improved relative to pristine sPB. The primary and secondary crystallization for pristine sPB and sPB/organoclay (2%) nanocomposites were analyzed and compared based on different approaches.

The structure and electrochemical properties of TiV1.1Mn0.9Nix (x = 0.1-0.7) solid solution electrode alloys have been investigated. It is found that these alloys mainly consist of a solid solution phase with body centered cubic (bcc) structure and a C14 Laves secondary phase. The solid solution alloys show easy activation behavior, high temperature dischargeability, high discharge capacity and favorable high-rate dischargeability as a negative electrode material in Ni-MH battery. The maximum discharge capacity is 502 mAh g(-1) at 303 K when x = 0.4. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test shows that the charge-transfer resistance at the surface of the alloy electrodes decreases obviously with increasing Ni content.

The Ophiophagus hannah (King Cobra) neurotoxin CM-11 is a small protein with 72 amino acid residues, Based on complete assignments of H-1-NMR resonances and determination of secondary structures of CM-11, 349 distance and 27 dihedral angle constraints including 19 phi's and 8 chi's were collected from NOESY and DQF-COSY , and the chemical stereospecific assignment of beta(1)H was partially achieved, Twelve structures with lower energy was obtained via metric matrix distance geometry and refinement with simulated annealing, These structures have a low RMSD of 0.14 nm for backbone atoms and 0.20 nm for heavy atoms, with no distance constraint violation more than 0.05 nm, and no dihedral angle violation more than 3 degrees.

X-ray and electrochemical studies of spinel-related manganese chromium oxides, LiCrxMn2-xO4 (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1) were carried out in a lithium nonaqueous cell. X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that the substitution of manganese in LiMn2O4 by trivalent transition metals (Cr3+) cause the linear decrease of lattice parameter with the x in the LiCrMn2-xO4. Some discharge-capacity loss was obtained due to the lattice contraction of LiCrMn2-xO4, but it has a better rechargeability than LiMn2O4. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance experiments have shown that the excellent rechargeability of LiCrxMn2-xO4 may be attributed to the good reversibility of the change in its crystal structure for the insertion and extraction of lithium ions.

In chain molecules of 1, 2-PBD, there are two kinds of gauche arrangements, which is the cause of making the spectrum of the secondary carbon in main chain of the polymer split. In such a complex system, the gauche arrangements of the secondary carbon and the tertiary carbon occupy an important position. Hence, the contribution of the tertiary carbon to the chemical shifts of the secondary carbon has a decisive effect on the sequence structure distribution. The secondary pores in the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite have been observed for the first time via Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy using xenon as a probe; the location of non-framework Al can also be identified.

Scandia and ceria doped zirconia samples, with 10 mol% SC2O3 and different content of CeO2, were synthesized and characterized. The XRD results depict that the sintered samples have a cubic phase structure. However, Raman spectra show that besides the main cubic phase, a secondary phase is also present in the sintered samples. The addition of CeO2 can raise the content of the cubic phase, but the minor metastable tetragonal phase (t'-phase) exists even at the CeO2 content as high as 10 mol%. The near-UV Raman spectra indicate that the deformed tetragonal structure predominates at the grain boundary. The addition of CeO2 can reduce the impurity at grain boundary, and no impurity can be found by near-UV Raman spectroscopy at the grain boundary of the samples with high CeO2 content. The impedance measurements show that with the increase of CeO2 content, the impedance of grain boundary decreases and the bulk impedance increases. The low impedance of grain boundary can be attributed to the formation of a clean grain boundary upon CeO2 doping, and the increase of the bulk impedance is due to the blocking effect of the large Ce(IV) ions. BACKGROUND: Variation in brain structure is both genetically and environmentally influenced. The question about potential differences in brain anatomy across populations of differing race and ethnicity remains a controversial issue. There are few studies specifically examining racial or ethnic differences and also few studies that test for race-related differences in context of other neuropsychiatric research, possibly due to the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities in clinical research. It is within this context that we conducted a secondary data analysis examining volumetric MRI data from healthy participants and compared the volumes of the amygdala, hippocampus, lateral ventricles, caudate nucleus, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and total cerebral volume between Caucasian and African-American participants. We discuss the importance of this finding in context of neuroimaging methodology, but also the need for improved recruitment of African Americans in clinical research and its broader implications for a better understanding of the neural basis of neuropsychiatric disorders. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This was a case control study in the setting of an academic medical center outpatient service. Participants consisted of 44 Caucasians and 33 ethnic minorities. The following volumetric data were obtained: amygdala, hippocampus, lateral ventricles, caudate nucleus, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and total cerebrum. Each participant completed a 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our primary finding in analyses of brain subregions was that when compared to Caucasians, African Americans exhibited larger left OFC volumes (F (1,68) = 7.50, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The biological implications of our findings are unclear as we do not know what factors may be contributing to these observed differences. However, this study raises several questions that have important implications for the future of neuropsychiatric research.

The way in which total secondary production is partitioned amongst species in various macrofauna communities (Amphiura, Venus, Abra, Modiolus) around the British Isles is discussed. When the proportion of total production is plotted for each species, ranked in order of productive importance, curves are produced which are characteristic of particular physical conditions. The shapes of the curves are independent of the actual species involved, but depend on the proportion of individuals in the community which adopt a particular feeding behaviour, and the scope for diversification within trophic groups. The form of these curves correlates closely with bottom currents and associated bed-stresses, since these affect both the nature of the food supply to bottom animals and the nature of the substrate. These observations have important implications for the structure and functioning of benthic communities. Comparison of production partitioning in the meiofauna of mud and sand substrates indicates a remarkable similarity within trophic groups although the partitioning of production between trophic groups is very different. The shapes of production-rank curves again appear to depend on the scope for diversification within trophic groups. In the meiofauna resources are partitioned more equitably than in the macrofauna. There is a marked discontinuity in the lognormal distribution of body sizes within integrated benthic communities at the meiofauna-macrofauna size boundary.

Structural changes were observed in the digestive tubule epithelial cells of Mytilus edulis following long-term exposure to the water accommodated fraction (WAF) of North Sea crude oil (30 μg · l−1 total oil derived aromatic hydrocarbons). The changes observed involved a reduction in the height of the digestive cells beyond that demonstrated in a normal feeding cycle. In addition there was a loss of the normal synchrony of the digestive cells to a point where nearly all the tubules exhibited an appearance similar to that which is usually termed ‘reconstituting’. These alterations were quantified using an image analysis technique and the mean height of the digestive cells used as an index of digestive function or state. Long-term exposure also induced a radical alteration of the structure of secondary lysosomes within the digestive cells, resulting in the formation of large lysosomes, believed to be autolysosomes. Stereological analyses showed that these lysosomes are reduced in numbers and greatly increased in volume in comparison with controls. There is a concomitant increase in surface area of lysosomes per unit volume of digestive cell compared with control conditions. These alterations are indicative of fundamental changes in secondary lysosomal function involving an autophagic response to oil derived hydrocarbons. which would contribute to the reduction of digestive cell cytoplasm. These cellular alterations are discussed in terms of their use as indices of cell injury, in response to oil.

The neglect of a consideration of history has been a feature of mobility research. ‘History’ affects the results of analyses of social mobility by altering the occupational/industrial structure and by encouraging exchange mobility. Changes in industrial structure are rooted more directly in historical causes and can be seen as more fundamental than changes in occupational structure. Following a substantial review of the secondary literature on changes in industrial and occupational structure in Northern Ireland, loglinear analyses of intra- and intergenerational mobility tables for sociologically-derived cohort generations that incorporate occupational and industrial categories are presented. Structural and inheritance effects for industry are as significant as those for occupation. Given the well-established finding of ‘constant social fludity’ in mobility tables once structural effects are controlled, the inclusion of categorization by industry is necessary in order to reach an accurate understanding of occupational mobility and the role of historical change in mobility.

The objective of the study is to determine the psychometric properties of the Epistemological Beliefs Questionnaire on Mathematics. 171 Secondary School Mathematics Teachers of the Central Region of Cuba participated. The results show acceptable internal consistency. The factorial structure of the scale revealed three major factors, consistent with the Model of the Three Constructs: beliefs about knowledge, about learning and teaching. Irregular levels in the development of the epistemological belief system about mathematics of these teachers were shown, with a tendency among naivety and sophistication poles. In conclusion, the questionnaire is useful for evaluating teacher’s beliefs about mathematics.

This paper seeks to analyse some key issues related to initial training models for secondary education teachers from an international perspective with more specific references to the Spanish model. First, we briefly mention secondary education and its training needs: purpose, organization, structure, character, duration, etc.. Secondly, the most typical models of initial training of these teachers: consecutive and simultaneous, academic and professional, are adressed. Thirdly, we analyse the structure of initial training containing more general scientific and professional knowledge, (its theoretical and practical components). Lastly, the relationship between initial training and access to the teaching profession will be established, as well as the possibility of academic and / or professional qualifications is analyzed. We then highlight the issue of "professional identity", which is closely linked to the initial training of future teachers and final conclusions are discussed.
