Helical nanofibers are successfully constructed from suitable self-assembling pseudopeptide-based molecular building blocks. The handedness of these nanofibers can be reversed by using mirror-imaged pseudopeptide-based building blocks. Straight nanofibers are also constructed by modulating the molecular and supramolecular structures by the proper choice of the stereochemical nature of the molecular scaffolds. This study demonstrates that molecular structure and chirality are not the only determining factors for tuning the morphology and chirality of nanostructures; the nature of the supramolecular structures formed from the corresponding molecular scaffolds also plays a key role in dictating the shape and chirality of nanostructures. Helical nanofibers are suitable templates for fabricating dipeptide-capped gold nanoparticles, indicating a possible use of these nanofibers in the construction of arrays of gold nanoparticles.

A terminally protected acyclic tetrapeptide Boc-Aib-Val-Aib-beta-Ala-OMe 1 (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, beta-Ala: beta-Alanine) self-assembles into a continuous hydrogen-bonded supramolecular helix with an average diameter of 10Angstrom (1nm) starting from a double bend molecular conformation in crystals and further self-assembly of this supramolecular architecture leads to the formation of polydisperse nanorods of diameters 10-40 nm.

The entropically-driven ring-opening polymerization of macrocyclic monomers (> ca. 14 ring atoms per repeat unit) and/or macrocyclic oligomers is a relatively new method of polymer synthesis that exploits the well-known phenomenon of ring-chain equilibria. It attracts interest because of its novel features. For example, these ring-opening polymerizations emit no volatiles and little or no heat. This review considers the principles of entropically-driven ring-opening polymerizations, gives selected examples and discusses potential applications. The latter include micromolding, high throughput syntheses and the synthesis of supramolecular polymers. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley T Sons, Ltd.

Three supramolecular complexes of Co(II) using SCN-/SeCN- in combination with 4,4'-dipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide (dpyo), i.e., {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(2)].(dpyo)}(n) ( 1), {[Co(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)].(H2O)}(n) ( 2), {[Co(SeCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 3), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Complex 1 is a rare example of a dpyo bridged two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, and pi-stacked dpyo supramolecular rods are generated by the lattice dpyo, passing through the rhombic grid of stacked layers, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) superstructure. Complexes 2 and 3 are isomorphous one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers [-Co-dpyo-Co-] that undergo self-assembly leading to a bilayer architecture derived through an R-2(2)(8) H-bonding synthon between coordinated water and dpyo oxygen. A reinvestigation of coordination polymers [Mn(SCN)(2)(dpyo)( H2O)(MeOH)](n) ( 4) and {[Fe(SCN)(2)(dpyo)(H2O)(2)]center dot(H2O)}(n) ( 5) reported recently by our group [ Manna et al. Indian J. Chem. 2006, 45A, 1813] reveals brick wall topology rather than bilayer architecture is due to the decisive role of S center dot center dot center dot S/Se center dot center dot center dot Se interactions in determining the helical nature in 4 and 5 as compared to zigzag polymeric chains in 2 and 3, although the same R-2(2)(8) synthon is responsible for supramolecular assembly in these complexes.

The interactions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with three ethylene oxide/butylene oxide (E/B) copolymers having different block lengths and varying molecular architectures is examined in this study in aqueous solutions. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) indicates the absence of BSA-polymer binding in micellar systems of copolymers with lengthy hydrophilic blocks. On the contrary, stable protein-polyrner aggregates were observed in the case of E18B10 block copolymer. Results from DLS and SAXS suggest the dissociation of E/B copolymer micelles in the presence of protein and the absorption of polymer chains to BSA surface. At high protein loadings, bound BSA adopts a more compact conformation in solution. The secondary structure of the protein remains essentially unaffected even at high polymer concentrations. Raman spectroscopy was used to give insight to the configurations of the bound molecules in concentrated solutions. In the vicinity of the critical gel concentration of E18B10 introduction of BSA can dramatically modify the phase diagram, inducing a gel-sol-gel transition. The overall picture of the interaction diagram of the E18B10-BSA reflects the shrinkage of the suspended particles due to destabilization of micelles induced by BSA and the gelator nature of the globular protein. SAXS and rheology were used to further characterize the structure and flow behavior of the polymer-protein hybrid gels and sols.

The large-scale production of clean energy is one of the major challenges society is currently facing. Molecular hydrogen is envisaged as a key green fuel for the future, but it becomes a sustainable alternative for classical fuels only if it is also produced in a clean fashion. Here, we report a supramolecular biomimetic approach to form a catalyst that produces molecular hydrogen using light as the energy source. It is composed of an assembly of chromophores to a bis(thiolate)-bridged diiron ([2Fe2S]) based hydrogenase catalyst. The supramolecular building block approach introduced in this article enabled the easy formation of a series of complexes, which are all thoroughly characterized, revealing that the photoactivity of the catalyst assembly strongly depends on its nature. The active species, formed from different complexes, appears to be the [Fe-2(mu-pdt)(CO)(4){PPh2(4-py)}(2)] (3) with 2 different types of porphyrins (5a and 5b) coordinated to it. The modular supramolecular approach was important in this study as with a limited number of building blocks several different complexes were generated.

The synthesis of doubly thermoresponsive PPO-PMPC-PNIPAM triblock copolymer gelators by atom transfer radical polymerization using a PPO-based macroinitiator is described. Provided that the PPO block is sufficiently long, dynamic light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry studies confirm the presence of two separate thermal transitions corresponding to micellization and gelation, as expected. However, these ABC-type triblock copolymers proved to be rather inefficient gelators: free-standing gels at 37 degrees C required a triblock copolymer concentration of around 20 wt%. This gelator performance should be compared with copolymer concentrations of 6-7 wt% required for the PNIPAM-PMPC-PNIPAM triblock copolymers reported previously. Clearly, the separation of micellar self-assembly from gel network formation does not lead to enhanced gelator efficiencies, at least for this particular system. Nevertheless, there are some features of interest in the present study. In particular, close inspection of the viscosity vs temperature plot obtained for a PPO43-PMPC160-PNIPAM(81) triblock copolymer revealed a local minimum in viscosity. This is consistent with intramicelle collapse of the outer PNIPAM blocks prior to the development of the intermicelle hydrophobic interactions that are a prerequisite for macroscopic gelation.

Structural studies of metal complexes of five ditopic hexaazamacrocycles containing two pyridine rings ([n] py(2)N(4) n = 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26) have been carried out. The synthesis of macrocycles [22]- to [26]- py(2)N(4) are also reported. The protonation constants of the last three compounds and the stability constants of their complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ were determined at 25 degreesC in 0.10 mol dm(-3) KNO3 in aqueous solution. Our results with [22] py(2)N(4) show significant differences from those described previously, while [24] py(2)N(4) has not been studied before and [ 26] py2N4 is a new compound. Mononuclear and dinuclear complexes of the divalent metal ions studied with [ 22]- to [26]- py(2)N(4) were found in solution. The stability constants for the ML complexes of the three ligands follow the Irving - Williams order: NiL2+ < CuL2+ >> ZnL2+ > PbL2+, however for the dinuclear complexes the values for Pb2+ complexes are higher than the corresponding values for the Ni2+ and the Zn2+ complexes. The X-ray single crystal structures of the supramolecular aggregates [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4))(H2O)(4)][Cu(H2O)(6)](SO4)(3) . 3H(2)O ( 1) and [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4))(CH3CN)(4)][Ni([20] py(2)N(4))](2)(ClO4)(8) . H2O (2), which are composed of homodinuclear [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4)])(H2O)(4)](4+) ( 1a) and [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4)])(CH3CN))(4)](4+) (2a), and mononuclear species, [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) (1b) and [Ni([20] py(2)N(4))](2+) ( 2b), respectively, assembled by an extensive network of hydrogen bonds, are also reported. In both homodinuclear complexes the copper centres are located at the end of the macrocycle and display distorted square pyramidal coordination environments with the basal plane defined by three consecutive nitrogen donors and one solvent molecule, water in 1a and acetonitrile in 2a. The macrocycle adopts a concertina-type conformation leading to the formation of macrocyclic cavities with the two copper centres separated by intramolecular distances of 5.526(1) and 5.508(7) Angstrom in 1a and 2a, respectively. The mononuclear complex [Ni([20] py(2)N(4)])](2+) displays a distorted octahedral co-ordination environment with the macrocycle wrapping the metal centre in a helical shape. EPR spectroscopy of the copper complexes indicated the presence of mono- and dinuclear species.

A self-associating synthetic tripeptide [Boc-Ala(1)-Aib(2)-beta-Ala(3)-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino-isobutyric acid, beta-Ala: beta-alanine)] forms thermoreversible transparent gels in various organic solvents and this offers the first example of a peptide gelator whose molecular self-assembly afforded for gelation has been characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic studies. The crystal structure of an analogous synthetic non-gelator tripeptide [Boc-Ala(1)-Gly(2)-beta-Ala(3)-OMe] is also discussed in light of the self-assembly of the gelator tripeptide. Three mu(1.5)-dicyanamide bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having molecular formula [Mn(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (1), [Co(dca)(2) (H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (2) and [Co(dca)(2)(bpds)](n) (3) [dca = dicyanamide; hmt = hexamethylenetetramine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study, low temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurement and thermal behavior. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 reveals that they are isostructural, comprising of 1D coordination polymers [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) [M = Mn(II), Co(II) for 1 and 2. respectively] with uncoordinated hmt molecules located among the chains. The [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) chains and the lattice hint molecules are connected through H-bonds resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. The octahedral N4O2 chromophore surrounding the metal ion forms via two trans located water oxygens and four nitrogens from four nitrile dca. Complex 3 is a 1D chain formed by two mu(1.5)-dca and one bridging bpds. The octahedral N-6 coordination sphere surrounding the cobalt ions comprises four nitrogens from dca and two from bpds. Low temperature magnetic study indicates small antiferromagnetic coupling for all the complexes. Best fit parameters for 1: J = -0.17 cm(-1), g = -2.03 with R = 6.1 x 10(-4), for 2, J = -0.50 cm(-1), and for 3, J = -0.95 cm(-1). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Trans-1, [HNEt3][Co-III(L-Se)(2)]center dot H2O and cis-1, [HNEt3][Co-III(L-Se)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray studies. The counter ion Et3NH+ plays a crucial role in the crystal packing leading to the formation of two distinctly different supramolecular assemblies in the two complexes. In trans-1, Co-bisphenolate units and triethylamine molecules are arranged in a linear fashion leading to a supramolecular columnar assembly along the crystallographic a-axis. In this assembly, triethylammonium ions are sandwiched between successive Co-bisphenolate units and act as gluing agents joining Co-bisphenolate units on either side through C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. In sharp contrast to trans-1, Co-bisphenolate units and triethylammonium ions in cis-1 are arranged in a helical supramolecular assembly through similar C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions along the crystallographic b-axis. The Se center dot center dot center dot Se van der Waals interactions may be responsible for the predominant occurrence of the cis-isomer. The cyclic voltammetric studies showed quasi-reversible waves for the cobalt(III) -> cobalt(II) reductions with E-1/2 = 0.635 and 0.628 V vs. Ag/AgCl for cis-1 (at similar to 5 degrees C) and trans-1 (at similar to 25 degrees C), respectively. DFT calculations show that the trans-form is the thermodynamic product with higher stability than the cis-one, which is consistent with the variable temperature H-1 NMR studies

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). A water-soluble tripeptide Val-Ile-Ala (VIA) 1, bearing sequence identity with the C-terminal portion of the Alzheimer A beta-peptide (A beta(40-42)), self-assembles, in crystalline form, to produce an intermolecularly hydrogen bonded supramolecular beta-sheet structure which self-associates to form straight, unbranched nanofibrils exhibiting amyloid-like behavior; in contrast, the synthetic tripeptide Ala-Val-Ile (AVI) 2 self-assembles to produce a beta-sheet structure that forms branched nanofibrils which do not show any characteristic features of amyloid-like fibrils.

The emergence of the mechanical bond during the past 25 years is giving chemistry a fillip in more ways than one. While its arrival on the scene is already impacting materials science and molecular nanotechnology, it is providing a new lease of life to chemical synthesis where mechanical bond formation Occurs as a consequence of the all-important templation Orchestrated by molecular recognition and self-assembly. The way in which covalent bond formation activates noncovalent bonding interactions, switching on molecular recognition that leads to self-assembly, and the template-directed synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules-of which the so-called catenanes and rotaxanes may be regarded as the prototypes-has introduced a level of integration into chemical synthesis that has not previously been attained jointly at the supramolecular and molecular levels. The challenge now is to carry this I vel of integration during molecular synthesis beyond relatively small molecules into the realms of precisely functionalized extended molecular Structures and superstructures that perform functions in a collective manner as the key sources of instruction, activation, and performance in multi-component integrated Circuits and devices. These forays into organic chemistry by a scientific nomad are traced through thick and thin from the Athens of the North to the Windy City by Lake Michigan with interludes on the edge of the Canadian Shield beside Lake Ontario, in the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire, on the Plains of Cheshire beside the Wirral, in the Midlands in the Heartland of Albion, and in the City of Angels beside the Peaceful Sea.
