Aqueous phase oxidation of sulphur dioxide at low concentrations catalysed by a PVP-Cu complex in the solid phase and dissolved Cu(II) in the liquid phase is studied in a rotating catalyst basket reactor (RCBR). The equilibrium adsorption of Cu(II) and S(VI) on PVP particles is found to be of the Langmuir-type. The diffusional effects of S(IV) species in PVP-Cu resin are found to be insignificant whereas that of product S(VI) are found to be significant. The intraparticle diffusivity of S(VI) is obtained from independent tracer experiments. In the oxidation reaction HSO3- is the reactive species. Both the S(IV) species in the solution, namely SO2(aq) and HSO3- get adsorbed onto the active PVP-Cu sites of the catalyst, but only HSO3- undergoes oxidation. A kinetic mechanism is proposed based on this feature which shows that SO2(aq) has a deactivating effect on the catalyst. A rate model is developed for the three-phase reaction system incorporating these factors along with the effect of concentration of H2SO4 on the solubility of SO2 in the dilute aqueous solutions of Cu(II). Transient oxidation experiments are conducted at different conditions of concentration of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and catalyst concentration, and the rate parameters are estimated from the data. The observed and calculated profiles are in very good agreement. This confirms the deactivating effect of nonreactive SO2(aq) on the heterogeneous catalysis.

Devitrification of spray pyrolysed, amorphous ZrO2-Al2O3 solid solution produces nanocrystalline microstructures (grain sizes 10-20 nm). In this study, spray pyrolysed amorphous ZrO2-40 mol% Al2O3 powder displayed good sinterability during decomposition, after spraying, of the nitrate precursors up to 1023K. Hot pressing of fully pyrolysed, pre-sintered (more than 70% dense) pellets at 923K and 750 MPa produced an amorphous pellet with less than 2% porosity. The results indicate the possibility of producing dense, amorphous pellets that can be heat treated further to produce nanocrystalline microstructures conducive for superplasticity.

We use the extended Hubbard model to investigate the properties of the charge- and spin-density-wave phases in the presence of a nearest-neighbors repulsion term in the framework of the slave-boson technique. We show that, contrary to Hartree-Fock results, an instablity may occur for sufficiently high values of the Hubbard repulsion, both in the spin- and charge-density-wave phase, which makes the system discontinuously jump to a phase with a smaller or zero wave amplitude. The limits of applicability of our approach are discussed and our results are compared with previous numerical analysis. The phase diagram of the model at half-filling is determined.

Perfect or even mediocre weather predictions over a long period are almost impossible because of the ultimate growth of a small initial error into a significant one. Even though the sensitivity of initial conditions limits the predictability in chaotic systems, an ensemble of prediction from different possible initial conditions and also a prediction algorithm capable of resolving the fine structure of the chaotic attractor can reduce the prediction uncertainty to some extent. All of the traditional chaotic prediction methods in hydrology are based on single optimum initial condition local models which can model the sudden divergence of the trajectories with different local functions. Conceptually, global models are ineffective in modeling the highly unstable structure of the chaotic attractor. This paper focuses on an ensemble prediction approach by reconstructing the phase space using different combinations of chaotic parameters, i.e., embedding dimension and delay time to quantify the uncertainty in initial conditions. The ensemble approach is implemented through a local learning wavelet network model with a global feed-forward neural network structure for the phase space prediction of chaotic streamflow series. Quantification of uncertainties in future predictions are done by creating an ensemble of predictions with wavelet network using a range of plausible embedding dimensions and delay times. The ensemble approach is proved to be 50% more efficient than the single prediction for both local approximation and wavelet network approaches. The wavelet network approach has proved to be 30%-50% more superior to the local approximation approach. Compared to the traditional local approximation approach with single initial condition, the total predictive uncertainty in the streamflow is reduced when modeled with ensemble wavelet networks for different lead times. Localization property of wavelets, utilizing different dilation and translation parameters, helps in capturing most of the statistical properties of the observed data. The need for taking into account all plausible initial conditions and also bringing together the characteristics of both local and global approaches to model the unstable yet ordered chaotic attractor of a hydrologic series is clearly demonstrated.

Maleic anhydride (MAH) has been grafted onto high density polyethylene (HDPE) with benzoyl peroxide (BOP) initiator in toluene solution. Maximum degree of grafting (12%) without crosslinking has been obtained using MAH/HDPE and BOP/HDPE weight ratios of 1.0 and 0.15 respectively, at 110 degrees C. The HDPE-g-MAH compatibilizer is found to drastically reduce the dispersed phase size and also to produce homogeneous blends for relatively low concentrations of dispersed phase in HDPE/nylon blends. Addition of this compatibilizer results in increase of tensile strength and modulus with increasing nylon content of HDPE/nylon blends, while the opposite is found for the blends without any added compatibilizer.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. Nanocrystalline ZnO:Mn (0.1 mol%) phosphors have been successfully prepared by self propagating, gas producing solution combustion method. The powder X-ray diffraction of as-formed ZnO:Mn sample shows, hexagonal wurtzite phase with particle size of similar to 40 nm. For Mn doped ZnO, the lattice parameters and volume of unit cell (a=3.23065 angstrom, c=5.27563 angstrom and V=47.684 (angstrom)(3)) are found to be greater than that of undoped ZnO (a=3.19993 angstrom, c=5.22546 angstrom and V=46.336 (angstrom)(3)). The SEM micrographs reveal that besides the spherical crystals, the powders also contained several voids and pores. The TEM photograph also shows the particles are approximately spherical in nature. The FTIR spectrum shows two peaks at similar to 3428 and 1598 cm(-1) which are attributed to O-H stretching and H-O-H bending vibration. The PL spectra of ZnO:Mn indicate a strong green emission peak at 526 nm and a weak red emission at 636 nm corresponding to T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+ ions. The EPR spectrum exhibits fine structure transition which will be split into six hyperfine components due to Mn-55 hyperfine coupling giving rise to all 30 allowed transitions. From EPR spectra the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The magnitude of the hyperfine splitting (A) constant indicates that there exists a moderately covalent bonding between the Mn2+ ions and the surrounding ligands. The number of spins participating in resonance (N), its paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) have been evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.

Real-time kinetics of ligand-ligate interaction has predominantly been studied by either fluorescence or surface plasmon resonance based methods. Almost all such studies are based on association between the ligand and the ligate. This paper reports our analysis of dissociation data of monoclonal antibody-antigen (hCG) system using radio-iodinated hCG as a probe and nitrocellulose as a solid support to immobilize mAb. The data was analyzed quantitatively for a one-step and a two-step model. The data fits well into the two-step model. We also found that a fraction of what is bound is non-dissociable (tight-binding portion (TBP)). The TBP was neither an artifact of immobilization nor does it interfere with analysis. It was present when the reaction was carried out in homogeneous solution in liquid phase. The rate constants obtained from the two methods were comparable. The work reported here shows that real-time kinetics of other ligand-ligate interaction can be studied using nitrocellulose as a solid support. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A unique phenomenon of ‘autoacceleration’ was observed in a free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and oxygen. Unlike the well known autoacceleration phenomenon in polymerization processes, this unusual phenomenon is not readily conceivable in terms of solution viscosity based reasoning. Surprisingly, we have observed manifestation of this new autoacceleration during free radical oxidative polymerization of some vinyl monomers at low conversions, where generally the polymerization reaction is zero order, the conversion–time plot are linear and viscosity effects are negligible. In the present paper, we interpret the mechanism of this new autoacceleration phenomenon on the basis of reactivity of the propagating radicals in terms of heat of formation data.

The facile method of solution combustion was used to synthesize gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6). The material was crystallized in a purely crystalline orthorhombic phase with sizes varying from 300 to 500 nm. Because the band gap was 2.51 eV, the degradation of wide variety of cationic and anionic dyes was investigated under solar radiation. Despite the low surface area (< 1 m(2)/g) of the synthesized material, gamma(L)-Bi(2)MoO(6) showed high photocatalytic activity under solar radiation due to its electronic and morphological properties. An entirely different approach for localisation of winding deformation based on terminal measurements is presented. Within the context of this study, winding deformation means, a discrete and specific change externally imposed at a particular position on the winding. The proposed method is based on pre-computing and plotting the complex network-function loci e.g. driving-point impedance (DPI)] at a selected frequency, for a meaningful range of values for each element (increasing and decreasing) of the ladder network which represents the winding. This loci diagram is called the nomogram. After introducing a discrete change, amplitude and phase of DPI are measured. By plotting this single measurement on the nomogram, it is possible to estimate the location and identify the extent of change. In contrast to the existing approach, the proposed method is fast, non-iterative and yields reasonably good localisation. Experimental results for actual transformer windings (interleaved and continuous disc) are presented.

In this paper we develop an analytical heat transfer model, which is capable of analyzing cyclic melting and solidification processes of a phase change material used in the context of electronics cooling systems. The model is essentially based on conduction heat transfer, with treatments for convection and radiation embedded inside. The whole solution domain is first divided into two main sub-domains, namely, the melting sub-domain and the solidification sub-domain. Each sub-domain is then analyzed for a number of temporal regimes. Accordingly, analytical solutions for temperature distribution within each subdomain are formulated either using a semi-infinity consideration, or employing a method of quasi-steady state, depending on the applicability. The solution modules are subsequently united, leading to a closed-form solution for the entire problem. The analytical solutions are then compared with experimental and numerical solutions for a benchmark problem quoted in the literature, and excellent agreements can be observed.

We report the formation ω phase in the remelted layers during laser cladding and remelting of quasicrystal forming Al65Cu23.3Fe11.7 alloy on pure aluminum. The ω phase is absent in the clad layers. In the remelted layer, the phase nucleates at the periphery of the primary icosahedral phase particles. A large number of ω phase particles forms enveloping the icosahedral phase growing into aluminum rich melt, which solidify as α-Al solid solution. On the other side it develops an interface with aluminum. A detailed transmission electron microscopic analysis shows that ω phase exhibits orientation relationship with icosahedral phase. The composition analysis performed using energy dispersive x-ray analyzer suggests that this phase has composition higher aluminum than the icosahedral phase. The analysis of the available phase diagram information indicates that the present results represent large departure from equilibrium conditions. A possible scenario of the evolution of the ω phase has been suggested.

Analytical studies are carried out to minimize acquisition time in phase-lock loop (PLL) applications using aiding functions. A second order aided PLL is realized with the help of the quasi-stationary approach to verify the acquisition behavior in the absence of noise. Time acquisition is measured both from the study of the LPF output transient and by employing a lock detecting and indicating circuit to crosscheck experimental and analytical results. A closed form solution is obtained for the evaluation of the time acquisition using different aiding functions. The aiding signal is simple and economical and can be used with state of the art hardware.
