The rheological properties and crystallization characteristics of low ethylene content poly propylene (EPM) with and without Yittrium oxide (Y2O3) as a filler was investigated by cone-plate viscometer and differential scanning calorimetry. Yittrium oxide had a profound effect on the viscosities of the systems. To determine the nonisothermal crystallization rate of the materials, a new estimation method was used. From the results, we can conclude that Y2O3 acts as a nucleating agent, which increased the crystallization rate of the EPM. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The modification of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) has been accomplished by radical EP-graft-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) has been used to obtain ternary PA/EP/EP-g-AA blends by melt mixing. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy; the domain size of the EP-dispersed phase in the polyamide 1010 matrix of compatibilized blends decreased compared with that of uncompatibilized blends. It is found that EP-g-AA used as the third component has a profound effect on the mechanical properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to serious chemical interactions taking place between the two components. Thermal analysis shows that some thermal properties of PA in compatibilized PA/EP/EP-g-AA changed because of chemical reactions taken place during the blending process. Wide angle x-ray diffraction measurements also confirmed this result. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by means of a radical-initiated melt grafting reaction. FTIR and ESCA were used to characterize the formation of EP-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in EP-g-GMA was determined by using hydrochloric acid/xylene titration. Effects of concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on grafting rate were studied. It was found that contact angles of the water on surfaces of EP-g-GMA samples increased with increasing content of GMA in EP-g-GMA. The influence of the content of GMA on the crystallization structure of EP-g-GMA was investigated by DSC and WAXD. Compared with the plain EP, the crystallization temperature of propylene blocks of EP-g-GMA increased over 10 K, and the melting temperature and crystallinity decreased somewhat. Functionalization of EP led to the change of the crystal form of propylene blocks from the mixed form of alpha and beta into the alpha form. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A series of vinylidene chloride (VDC) copolymers with methyl acrylate (MA) or butyl acrylate (BA) as comonomer (not more than 10%) was prepared by free-radical suspension copolymerization. The effects of comonomer structure, copolymer composition, and reaction condition (such as polymerization temperature on crystallinity) and thermal properties (such as melting temperature and decomposition temperature) were investigated. All VDC/acrylics copolymers studied here are semicrystalline and have more than one crystalline structure. The melting temperature of MA/VDC copolymers is decreased progressively with increase in MA content. The decomposition temperature of MA/VDC copolymers is slight increased gradually with increase in MA content. MA/VDC copolymers have lower melting temperature compared with BA/VDC copolymers with same VDC composition. The melting temperature of VDC copolymers increases with increase in polymerization temperature and decomposition temperature of those is almost independent of polymerization temperature. The melting behavior of semicrystalline poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When PEEKK is annealed from the amorphous state, it usually shows two melting peaks. The upper melting peaks arise first, and the lower melting peaks are developed later. The upper melting peaks shown in the DSC thermogram are the combination (addition) of three parts: initial crystal formed before scanning; reorganization; and melting-recrystallization of lower melting peaks in the DSC scanning period. In the study of isothermal crystallization kinetics, the Avrami equation was used to analyze the primary process of the isothermal crystallization; the Avrami constant, n, is about 2 for PEEKK from the melt and 1.5 for PEEKK from the glass state. According to the Lauritzen-Hoffman equation, the kinetic parameter of PEEKK from the melt is 851.5 K; the crystallization kinetic parameter of PEEKK is higher than that of PEEK, and suggests the crystallizability of PEEKK is less than that of PEEK. The study of crystallization on PEEKK under nonisothermal conditions is also reported for cooling rates from 2.5 degrees C/min to 40 degrees C/min, and the nonisothermal condition was studied by Mandelkern analysis. The results show the nonisothermal crystallization is different from the isothermal crystallization. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The permeability coefficients of a series of copolymers of vinylidene chloride (VDC) with methyl acrylate (MA), butyl acrylate (BA) or vinyl chloride (VC) (as comonomer) to oxygen and carbon dioxide have been measured at 1.0 MPa and 30 degrees C, while those to water vapor have been measured at 30 degrees C and 100% relative humidity. All the copolymers are semicrystalline. VDC/MA copolymers have lower melting temperature compared with VDC/BA copolymers, while that melting temperature of VDC/VC copolymer is higher than that of VDC/acrylate copolymers with the same VDC content. The barrier property of the copolymers is predominantly controlled by crystallite, free volume fraction, and cohesive energy. The permeability coefficients of VDC/MA copolymers to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were successfully correlated with the ratio of free volume to cohesive energy.

The effects of chlorine on three kinds of aromatic polyamides: those not containing a substituent, those containing substituents, and those containing heterocyclic aromatic rings, were studied. The correlations between the chemical structures of polyamides and the reactivity to hypochlorous acid were examined by IR and C-13 solid-state NMR spectra before and after chlorination. It was found that the chlorination of polyamides depends not only on their chemical structures but also on chlorination conditions such as pH value and reaction time. Their response to chlorination corresponds to four types: ring-chlorination, no reaction, N-chlorination, and chain cleavage. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Truly chlorine-resistant polyamide reverse osmosis composite membranes were prepared by cross-linking the interface of the composite membrane. Such membranes possessed chlorine resistance one order of magnitude more than those of the commercially used polyamide composite membranes. The effect of the degree of cross-linking on chlorine resistance was also described. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Permeability coefficients of H-2, O-2, and N2 were measured under 10 atm at the temperature from ambient temperature up to 150 degrees C in a series of structurally different aromatic homo- and copolyimides, which were prepared from 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) or 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) with various aromatic dianhydrides. The study shows that the molecular structure of the polyimides strongly influences gas permeability and permselectivity. As a result, the permeability coefficients of the polyimide membranes for each gas vary by over two orders of magnitude. In general, among the polyimide membranes studied, the increase in permeability of polymers is accompanied by the decrease in permselectivity, and the MDA-based polyimide membranes have higher permeability than ODA-based ones. Among the polyimides prepared from bridged dianhydrides, the permeability coefficients to H-2, O-2, and N-2 are progressively increased in the order BPDA < BTDA < ODPA similar to TDPA < DSDA ( SiDA < 6FDA, while H-2/N-2 and O-2/N-2 permselectivity coefficients are progressively decreased in the same order. The copolyimide membranes, which were prepared from 3,3',4,4' biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)dimethylsilane dianhydride (SiDA), and ODA, have favorable gas separation properties and are useful for H-2/N-2 separation applications. The synthesis is described of some aromatic polyamides based on unsubstituted, and methyl-, carboxy-, and sulfo-substituted diamines by interfacial polycondensation. Some of them are crosslinked and some of them contain heterocyclic aromatic rings. Their chemical structures are characterized by IR and C-13 solid-state NMR spectra and the spectra are interpreted. The synthesis and characterization of side-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyacrylates containing para-nitroazobenzene (Pn) as mesogenic groups were described. Homopolymers with 3 and 4 carbon atoms in the spacers were non-LC polymers; for homopolymers with 6 carbon atoms in the spacer, nematic LC behavior was observed. Copolymers with acrylic acid as one component exhibited an S-Ad phase according to the WAXD results which showed the d/l of 1.4-1.54 for the copolymers with 3, 4, and 6 carbon atoms in the spacers. Considering the molecular structure as well as the WAXD results of the copolymers, the possible molecular arrangement in the smectic Sad phase was proposed, in which the smectic layers were composed of the antiparallel mesogens and the antiparallel arrangement was considered to be enhanced due to the H bond between - COOH and - NO2. The stress-induced orientational phenomena of Pn in the LC states was also discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of a fine powder of Y2O3, Nd2O3, and Ho2O3 on the crystal structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was studied with WAXD and DSC techniques. The results showed that the addition of the three rare earth oxides (REOs) can increase the crystallite size of the alpha-form crystal and the degree of crystallinity of iPP at an annealing temperature of 120 degrees C and that both Y2O3 and Nd2O3 are the beta-nucleator of iPP. REOs enhance the overall growth rate of the spherulites of iPP. All the iPP samples filled with REOs which were crystallized isothermally at 132 degrees C from the melt exhibited their melting peaks of the beta-form on the DSC heating traces, indicating that the REOs are the nucleating agents for both the alpha- and beta-forms of iPP under isothermal conditions. Using a recently developed laser light-scattering (LLS) procedure, we accomplished the characterization of a broadly distributed unfractionated phenolphthalein poly(aryl ether ketone) (PEK-C) in CHCl3 at 25 degrees C. The laplace inversion of precisely measured intensity-intensity time correlation function from dynamic LLS leads us first to an estimate of the characteristic line-width distribution G(Gamma) and then to the translational diffusion coefficient distribution G(D). By using a previously established calibration of D (cm(2)/s) = 2.37 X 10(-4)M(-0.57), were able to convert G(D) into a differential weight distribution f(w)(M). The weight-average molecular weight M(w) calculated from f(w)(M) agrees well with that directly measured in static LLS. Our results indicate that both the calibration and LLS procedure used in this study are ready to be applied as a routine method for the characterization of the molecular weight distribution of PEK-C. Phase behavior of blends of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with four styrene-butadienestyrene (SBS) triblock copolymers, being of various molecular weights, architecture, and compositions, was investigated by small-angle light scattering. Small-angle X-ray scattering investigation was accomplished for one blend. Low critical solution temperature (LCST) and a unique phase behavior, resembling upper critical solution temperature (UCST), were observed. It was found that the architecture of the copolymer greatly influenced the phase behavior of the blends. Random phase approximation theory was used to calculate the spinodal phase transition curves of the ABA/C and BAB/C systems; LCST and resembling UCST phase behavior were observed as the parameters of the system changed. Qualitatively, the experimental and the theoretical results are consistent with each other. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The novel polyetheretherketone (PEK-C) prepared from phenolphthalein in our institute is an amorphous, rigid, tough material with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. To improve its water vapor permeability for the application of gas drying, PEK-C was sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and transferred in sodium, cupric, and ferric salt forms. Sulfonation degree can be regulated by controlling the temperature and reaction time. Characterization of sulfonated PEK-C in sodium form was made by infrared spectroscopy. Some properties of the sulfonated PEK-C, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and transport properties to nitrogen and water vapor, are also discussed.
