Leachate from an untreated landfill or landfill with damaged liners will cause the pollution of soil and ground water. Here an attempt was made to generate knowledge on concentrations of all relevant pollutants in soil due to municipal solid waste landfill leachate and its migration through soil and also to study the effect of leachate on the engineering properties of soil. To identify the pollutants in soil due to the leachate generated from municipal solid waste landfill site, a case study on an unlined municipal solid waste landfill at Kalamassery has been done. Soil samples as well as water samples were collected from the site and analysed to identify the pollutants and its effect on soil characteristics. The major chemicals in the soil were identified as Ammonia, Chloride, Nitrate, Iron, Nickel, Chromium, Cadmium etc.. Engineering properties of field soil samples show that the chemicals from the leachate of landfill may have effect on the engineering properties of soil. Laboratory experiments were formulated to model the field around an unlined MSW landfill using two different soils subjected to a synthetic leachate. The Maximum change in chemical concentration and engineering property was observed on soil samples at a radial distance of 0.2 m and at a depth of 0.3 m. The pollutant (chemicals) transport pattern through the soil was also studied using synthetic leachate. To establish the effect of pollutants (chemicals) on engineering properties of soil, experiments were conducted on two types soils treated with the synthetic chemicals at four different concentrations. Analyses were conducted after maturing periods of 7, 50, 100 and 150 days. Test soils treated with maximum chemical concentration and matured for 150 days were showing major change in the properties. To visualize the flow of pollutants through soil in a broader sense, the transportation of pollutants through soil was modeled using software ‘Visual MODFLOW’. The actual field data collected for the case study was used to calibrate the modelling and thus simulated the flow pattern of the pollutants through soil around Kalamassery municipal solid waste landfill for an extent of 4 km2. Flow was analysed for a time span of 30 years in which the landfill was closed after 20 years. The concentration of leachate beneath the landfill was observed to be reduced considerably within one year after closure of landfill and within 8 years, it gets lowered to a negligible level. As an environmensstal management measure to control the pollution through leachate, permeable reactive barriers are used as an emerging technology. Here the suitability of locally available materials like coir pith, rice husk and sugar cane bagasse were investigated as reactive media in permeable reactive barrier. The test results illustrates that, among these, coir pith was showing better performance with maximum percentage reduction in concentration of the filtrate. All these three agricultural wastes can be effectively utilized as a reactive material. This research establishes the influence of leachate of municipal solid waste landfill on the engineering properties of soil. The factors such as type of the soil, composition of leachate, infiltration rate, aquifers, ground water table etc., will have a major role on the area of influence zone of the pollutants in a landfill. Software models of the landfill area can be used to predict the extent and the time span of pollution of a landfill, by inputting the accurate field parameters and leachate characteristics. The present study throws light on the role of agro waste materials on the reduction of the pollution in leachate and thus prevents the groundwater and soil from contamination

Transport of live aquatic organisms which is more than a century old, perhaps started in the 1870's (Norris et al, 1960). Live fish transportation is an essential practice in aquaculture particularly in rural areas of developing countries representing the only means of supplying fry to small scale aqua culturists (Taylor and Ross, 1988). Very often, large numbers of fry, fingerlings, juveniles and adult fish are being transported from the hatchery to fish farms, fish farms to market, processors and consumers. Live fish command large economic importance in the fresh fish market than dead and iced fish. Medina Pizzali (2001) observed that live fish in the Kolkata market was usually sold at higher prices than dead fish and most consumers were prepared to pay premium prices for live fish, which is considered as the best guarantee of freshness, quality, and intrinsic characteristics of its flesh (better texture and delicate flavour) in comparison with fresh/chilled seafood. Am Institut für Mikrostrukturtechnologie und Analytik wurde eine neue Technik entwickelt, die neue Anwendungen und Methoden der Mikro- und Nanostrukturierung auf Basis eines neuen Verfahrens erschlossen hat. NANOJET führt über die passive Rastersondenmikroskopie hinaus zu einem vielseitigen, aktiven Bearbeitungswerkzeug auf der Mikro- und Nanometerskala. NANOJET (NANOstructuring Downstream PlasmaJET) ist eine aktive Rasterkraft-Mikroskopie-Sonde. Radikale (chemisch aktive Teilchen, die ein ungepaartes Valenzelektron besitzen) strömen aus dem Ende einer ultradünnen, hohlen Rasterkraftmikroskop-Spitze. Dadurch wird es möglich, über die übliche passive Abtastung einer Probenoberfläche hinausgehend, diese simultan und in-situ durch chemische Reaktionen zu verändern. Die Abtragung von Material wird durch eine chemische Ätzreaktion erreicht. In dieser Arbeit wurde zum größten Teil Photoresist als Substrat für die Ätzexperimente verwendet. Für das Ätzen des Resists wurden die Atome des Fluors und des Sauerstoffs im Grundzustand als verantwortlich identifiziert. Durch Experimente und durch Ergänzung von Literaturdaten wurde die Annahme bestätigt, dass Sauerstoffradikale mit Unterstützung von Fluorradikalen für die hohen erzielten Ätzraten verantwortlich sind. Die Beimischung von Fluor in einem Sauerstoffplasma führt zu einer Verringerung der Aktivierungsenergie für die Ätzreaktion gegenüber Verwendung reinen Sauerstoffs. In weiterer Folge wurde ein Strukturierungsverfahren dargestellt. Hierbei wurden "geformte Kapillaren" (mikrostrukturierte Aperturen) eingesetzt. Die Herstellung der Aperturen erfolgte durch einen elektrochemischen Ätzstop-Prozess. Die typische Größe der unter Verwendung der "geformten Kapillaren" geätzten Strukturen entsprach den Kapillarenöffnungen. Es wurde ein Monte-Carlo Simulationsprogramm entwickelt, welches den Transport der reaktiven Teilchen in der langen Transportröhre simulierte. Es wurde sowohl die Transmission der Teilchen in der Transportröhre und der Kapillare als auch ihre Winkelverteilung nach dem Verlassen der Kapillare berechnet. Das Aspektverhältnis der Röhren hat dabei einen sehr starken Einfluss. Mit einem steigenden Aspektverhältnis nahm die Transmission exponentiell ab. Die geschaffene experimentelle Infrastruktur wurde genutzt, um auch biologische Objekte zu behandeln und zu untersuchen. Hierfür wurde eine neue Methodik entwickelt, die eine dreidimensionale Darstellung des Zellinneren erlaubt. Dies wurde durch die kontrollierte Abtragung von Material aus der Zellmembran durchgeführt. Die Abtragung der Zellmembran erfolgte mittels Sauerstoffradikalen, die durch eine hohle Spitze lokalisiert zum Ort der Reaktion transportiert wurden. Ein piezoresistiver Cantilever diente als Sensor in dem zur Bildgebung eingesetzten RKM. Das entwickelte Verfahren ermöglicht es nun erstmals, schonend Zellen zu öffnen und die innen liegenden Organellen weiter zu untersuchen. Als Nachweis für weitere Verwendungsmöglichkeiten des NANOJET-Verfahrens wurde auch Knochenmaterial behandelt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Experimente zeigen klar, dass das Verfahren für vielfältige biologische Materialien verwendbar ist und somit nun ein weiter Anwendungskreis in der Biologie und Medizin offen steht.

Food farming in Oyo North, Nigeria is characterised by an increasing use of Intermediary Mode of Transportation (IMT) to ease inputs and outputs mobility and farm access. To assess the influence on food farmer’s productivity, a random sample of 230 respondents was selected and data collected on their socio-economic and farm specific characteristics. Descriptive statistics, Herfindhal Index and Technical Efficiency Approach were used to analyse the data. The results indicate that majority of food farmers were in their middle age with mean age of 50 years and most of them used one plot at a location between 5 and 10km to their village of residence. They acquired land by inheritance and practiced intensive crop diversification as risk management strategy. The transportation modes used in addition to walking include bicycle, motorcycle, and car with increasing trend in the use of motorcycle. The mean Technical Efficiency (TE) of food farmers was 0.82 with significant inefficiency effects. The inefficiency analysis indicates positive effect of distance, crop diversification and un-tarred type of road on farmer’s productivity, while poor level of education among farmers, use of bicycle; trekking and weekly working time negatively affect farmer’s efficiency. The negative effect of trekking and use of bicycle and the excess working time suggest the adoption of more IMT of motorized type to optimize farming time and increase farmer’s productivity.

We present an optimal methodology for synchronized scheduling of production assembly with air transportation to achieve accurate delivery with minimized cost in consumer electronics supply chain (CESC). This problem was motivated by a major PC manufacturer in consumer electronics industry, where it is required to schedule the delivery requirements to meet the customer needs in different parts of South East Asia. The overall problem is decomposed into two sub-problems which consist of an air transportation allocation problem and an assembly scheduling problem. The air transportation allocation problem is formulated as a Linear Programming Problem with earliness tardiness penalties for job orders. For the assembly scheduling problem, it is basically required to sequence the job orders on the assembly stations to minimize their waiting times before they are shipped by flights to their destinations. Hence the second sub-problem is modelled as a scheduling problem with earliness penalties. The earliness penalties are assumed to be independent of the job orders.

The rotary valve is a widely used mechanical device in many solids-handling industrial processes. However, it may also be responsible for most of the attrition effects occurring in a typical process. In this study, the attrition effects occurring in a rotary valve operating as a stand-alone device and as part of a pneumatic conveying system were investigated. In the former case granular attrition was carried out at three different rotary valve speeds and the experimental results obtained were found to be in good agreement with the Gwyn correlation. In the latter case three typical air flow rates were used in the pneumatic conveying system. The size distribution of the attrition product obtained at the lowest air flow rate used was not adequately described by the Gwyn correlation. The attrition process and mechanisms involved were analysed and the minimum size of the attrition product obtained from both modes of operations was found to be similar.

El problema de transporte en Bogotá es cada vez algo mas grande, pues las medidas actuales y los planes a futuro para el desarrollo de un sistema integrado de transporte parecen no ser suficientes para la magnitud poblacional de la capital Colombiana; de igual manera los precios son elevados y representan un inconveniente para los ciudadanos puesto que la cantidad de estos que puede pagar un pasaje del actual sistema transmilenio es cada vez más baja debido al alto incremento que su tarifa tiene anualmente. Por esta razón durante lo largo de este escrito se justificaran las razones que indican que los planes aplicados y por aplicar por el distrito no son suficientes para cubrir el vacío que existe en Bogotá a nivel de un sistema integrado de transporte público.

In Metropolitan Area of Mexico City, most of urban displacements happen through semi formal public transportation: small and medium capacity vehicles operated by small private enterprises, through a concession scheme. This kind of public transportation has been playing a major role in the Mexican capital. On one hand, it has been one of the conditions for urbanization to be possible. On the other hand, despite its uncountable deficiencies, public transportation has allowed for a long time the whole population to be able to move within this huge metropolis. However, that important function with regards to integration has now reached its limits in the most recent suburbs of the city, where a new mode of urbanization is taking place, based on massive production of very big social housing gated settlements. Public transportation tends to constitute here a factor of exclusion and households meet with important difficulties for their daily mobility.
