Safety climate and its relationship with furniture companies’ safety performance and workers’ risk acceptance

This study aims to analyse the relationship between safety climate and the level of risk acceptance, as well as its relationship with workplace safety performance. The sample includes 14 companies and 403 workers. The safety climate assessment was performed by the application of a Safety Climate in Wood Industries questionnaire and safety performance was assessed with a checklist. Judgements about risk acceptance were measured through questionnaires together with four other variables: trust, risk perception, benefit perception and emotion. Safety climate was found to be correlated with workgroup safety performance, and it also plays an important role in workers’ risk acceptance levels. Risk acceptance tends to be lower when safety climate scores of workgroups are high, and subsequently, their safety performance is better. These findings seem to be relevant, as they provide Occupational, Safety and Health practitioners with a better understanding of workers’ risk acceptance levels and of the differences among workgroups.

O impacto da introdução de impostos proporcionais nas receitas fiscais e performance económica: as experiências de novos estados membros da UE27

Nos últimos anos tem-se debatido o regresso a sistemas de impostos proporcionais em muitas economias europeias. Apesar do sistema de impostos proporcionais puro nunca ter sido introduzido em nenhuma economia, alguns aspectos deste sistema foram postos em prática em cerca de trinta países. Neste artigo analisam-se algumas das experiências dos Novos Estados Membros da União Europeia que implementaram impostos proporcionais, averiguando o seu impacto sobre as receitas fiscais, saldo orçamental, crescimento económico e desemprego. A análise estatística permite concluir que as receitas fiscais aumentaram na maior parte daquelas economias e que observaram taxas de crescimento económico muito mais elevadas do que os restantes Novos Estados Membros com sistemas de impostos progressivos.

Full analysis of suspension geometry and chassis performance of Formula Student racing car

Formula Student events gather engineering students, who compete, designing, building and racing single-seater cars. The team of ISEP is working on its first car that soon will take part in this competition. This work aims to analyze the current design’s chassis, focusing on suspension geometry and frame’s performance. After analyzing results of the tests planned suggestions, that can be taken into consideration during design process of next cars will be presented. As the car has not been tested yet this work can also be helpful to explain its performance on the track later.

Give some to get some - Analysing the relationship between worker satisfaction with human resources management and perceived individual performance in a Portuguese hospital

The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between the satisfaction with HRM practices in an organization and the workers' perceived performance. We are interested in learning if indeed workers that are more satisfied with the organization’s practices will also perceive themselves as more hardworking than others, thus confirming the happy-productive worker hypothesis, from an individual perception standpoint. Data originates from a large Portuguese hospital, with a sample of 952 clinical and nonclinical hospital workers. Data was originally explored using SPSS software and later tested in AMOS software where a multiple regression model was constructed and tested. Results indicate that overall satisfaction with HRM practices are related with the workers’ perceived performance; most of the HRM satisfaction subscales also relate, except for pay and performance appraisal, that do not seem to be good predictors of the workers perceived performance. The present study is based on a single large public hospital, and thus, these findings need to be further tested in other settings. This study offers some clues regarding the areas of HRM that seem to be more related with the workers’ perceived performance, and hence provide an interesting framework for managers dealing with healthcare teams. This study contributes to the happy-productive worker hypothesis research, by including seldom used variables in the equation and taking a different perspective. Results provide new clues for investigation and practice regarding the areas of action in HRM that seem to be more prone to elicit perceived effort from the workers.

Massive ocular hemorrhage resulting in blindness in a patient with the sickle cell trait who developed leptospirosis. Case report

This case report describes the findings of a 18 year-old black male from Bahia, a Northeastern state in Brazil, with the sickle cell trait, who developed bilateral hyphema and vitreous hemorrhage with blindness in the course of leptospirosis. The patient started to complain of blurred vision four days after the start of fever and muscular pain and approximately twelve hours after the introduction of penicillin. The severity of the leptospirosis in conjunction with sickle cell trait was considered to be the most likely explanation for this ocular complication.

Manifesto para uma nova química: o discurso preliminar do Traité Elémentaire de Chimie de Antoine Laurent Lavoisier

Em 2011, ano internacional da química, parece ser pertinente a publicação de um dos textos que marcou o esforço de renovação desta disciplina nos finais do século xviii. O Discurso Preliminar do Tratado Elementar de Química (1789) de Antoine Laurent Lavoisier constituiu-se como um verdadeiro manifesto para uma nova forma de ensinar, entender e praticar esta disciplina. No âmbito de um processo com cariz revolucionário era imperativo mobilizar as jovens gerações de futuros químicos. Era ainda necessária a própria refundição da linguagem química. São estes os principais propósitos que Lavoisier apresenta neste documento inaugural, num modo claro e metódico característico do seu estilo.

SIR performance evaluation of MB-OFDM UWB system with residual timing offset

Signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) performance of a multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband system with residual timing offset is investigated. To do so, an exact mathematical derivation of the SIR of this system is derived. It becomes obvious that, unlike a cyclic prefixing based system, a zero padding based system is sensitive to residual timing offset.
