In the present investigation, Al 2024-15vol.%Al2O3 particulate (average size, 18 mu m) composites were fabricated using the liquid metallurgy route. The wear and friction characteristics of Al alloy 2024 and Al 2024-15vol.%Al2O3p, composite in the as-extruded and peak-aged conditions were studied using a pin-on-disc machine (with a steel disc as the counterface material). The worn surfaces, subsurfaces and the debris were analysed in a scanning electron microscope. The performance of the composite in the as-extruded condition is slightly inferior to that of the unreinforced alloy. However, in the T6 condition, although the wear rates of two materials are initially comparable, the unreinforced alloy seizes while the composite does not within the tested range employed. In the as-extruded condition, the presence of Al2O3 particles is not particularly beneficial as they fracture and result in extensive localized cracking and removal of material from the surface. In the peak-aged condition, however, while the unreinforced alloy exhibits severe plastic deformation and undergoes seizure, there is no significant change in the mechanism in the case of the composite. Except in the case of the peak-aged unreinforced alloy, worn surfaces of all other materials show the presence of an iron-rich layer.

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) nanotubes prepared by a novel sal-gel template method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations demonstrated that the postannealed (650 degrees C for 1 h) PMN-PT nanotubes were polycrystalline with perovskite crystal structure. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) shows that as prepared PMN-PT nanotubes were hollow with diameter to be about 200 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that the obtained PMN-PT nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (10-20 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis confirmed the stoichiometric 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3). The possible formation mechanism of PMN-PT nanotubes was proposed at the end. In the present study, 6061 Al metallic matrix was reinforced by 12.2 wt% df SiC particulates using liquid metallurgy route. The composite material thus obtained was extruded and characterized in the as-solutionized and peak aged conditions in order to delineate the effect of aging associated precipitation of secondary phases on the tensile fracture behavior of the composite samples. The results' of microstructural characterization studies carried out using scanning electron microscope revealed the increased presence of precipitated secondary phases in the metallic matrix and a more pronounced interfacial segregation of alloying elements in case of peak aged samples when compared to the as-solutionized samples. The results of the fractographic studies conducted on the as-solutionized samples revealed that the failure was dominated by the SiC particulates cracking while for the peak aged samples the fracture surface revealed a comparatively more pronounced SiC/6061 Al debonding and reduced SiC particulates cracking. This change in the failure behavior was rationalized in terms of embrittlement of the interfacial region brought about by the aging heat treatment and is correlated, in addition, with the mechanical properties of the composite samples in as-solutionized and peak aged conditions.

Laminated composite structures are susceptible to damage under impacts with attendant properly degradation. While studies on damage tolerance behaviour are emphasised and the findings reported, the citations correlating impacts with the fracture features are limited. In the present study, therefore, attempts have been made to depict how the transition of the fracture features take place depending on the type and extent of defect introduced onto the carbon-epoxy system. The test specimens were subjected to differing levels of low energy pendulum impacts with a view to have specimens with varying levels of intial impacts history. Into such specimens, additional defect in the form of slits of varying depths were introduced by a mechanical process. The test coupons were then allowed to fail by impact. The fracture surface was studied under scanning electron microscope. The fractographic features that appear, based on the induced/inserted defects, are presented in this paper. It was noticed that the energy absorbed for final fracture could be associated with the defect introduced into the system. It was also observed that the size of the mechanically inserted defect had a significant influence on the features of the fracture surface.

Syntactic foams made by mechanical mixing of polymeric binder and hollow spherical particles are used as core materials in sandwich structured materials. Low density of such materials makes them suitable for weight sensitive applications. The present study correlates various postcompression microscopic observations in syntactic foams to the localized events leading the material to fracture. Depending upon local stress conditions the fracture features of syntactic foam are identified for various modes of fracture such as compressive, shear and tensile. Microscopic observations were also taken at sandwich structures containing syntactic foam as core materials and also at reinforced syntactic foam containing glass fibers. These observations provide conclusive evidences for the fracture features generated under different failure modes. All the microscopic observations were taken using scanning electron microscope in secondary electron mode. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Compressive strength of epoxy with "free-inforcement" flyash without any prior separation is studied. It is observed that the increase in filler volume fraction beyond 10% brings about a reduction in the compressive strength. Increasing adhesion factor, determined relative to unfilled matrix, implied an alleviation in the interfacial adhesion due to dewetting, especially at the surfaces of larger particles and at higher filler concentrations. Such deductions were verified by examining the surface features of compression tested samples in Scanning Electron Microscope.

We report a new method for quantitative estimation of graphene layer thicknesses using high contrast imaging of graphene films on insulating substrates with a scanning electron microscope. By detecting the attenuation of secondary electrons emitted from the substrate with an in-column low-energy electron detector, we have achieved very high thickness-dependent contrast that allows quantitative estimation of thickness up to several graphene layers. The nanometer scale spatial resolution of the electron micrographs also allows a simple structural characterization scheme for graphene, which has been applied to identify faults, wrinkles, voids, and patches of multilayer growth in large-area chemical vapor deposited graphene. We have discussed the factors, such as differential surface charging and electron beam induced current, that affect the contrast of graphene images in detail. Biphasic calcium phosphates have received considerable attention due to their optimum dissolution rate in the human body after implantation. These materials are composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and resorbable tricalcium phosphate (TCP). In the present investigation, HA whiskers are reinforced into TCP to enhance the mechanical properties of this biphasic composite. Various amounts (30-50 wt%) HA whiskers are reinforced in TCP matrix. Microstructural characterization has been carried out using field-emission scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties have been investigated by microindentation in a universal testing machine (UTM). As TCP is resorbable, it will dissolve in body fluid and there is a strong possibility for the faceted HA whiskers to interact with functional groups present in the body fluid surroundings.

In the present work, the reaction between a molten iron drop and dense alumina was studied using the X-ray sessile-drop method under different oxygen partial pressures in the gas atmosphere. The changes in contact angles between the iron drop and the alumina substrate were followed as functions of temperature and varying partial pressures of oxygen in the temperature range 1823 to 1873 K both in static and dynamic modes. The results of the contact angle measurements with pure iron in contact with dense alumina in extremely well-purified argon as well as under different oxygen partial pressures in the gas atmosphere showed good agreement with earlier measurements reported in the literature. In the dynamic mode, when argon was replaced by a CO-CO2-Ar mixture with a well-defined PO, in the gas, the contact angle showed an initial decrease followed by a period of nearly constant contact angle. At the end of this period, the length of which was a function of the P-O2 imposed, a further steep decrease in the contact angle was noticed. An intermediate layer of FeAl2O4 was detected in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the reacted substrates. An interesting observation in the present experiments is that the iron drop moved away from the site of the reaction once the product layer covered the interface. The results are analyzed on the basis of the various forces acting on the drop.

We provide a theory for the tunneling conductance G(V) of Dirac electrons on the surface of a topological insulator as measured by a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope tip for low-bias voltages V. We show that if the in-plane rotational symmetry on the surface of the topological insulator is broken by an external field that does not couple to spin directly (such as an in-plane electric field), G(V) exhibits an unconventional dependence on the direction of the magnetization of the tip, i.e., it acquires a dependence on the azimuthal angle of the magnetization of the tip. We also show that G(V) can be used to measure the magnitude of the local out-of-plane spin orientation of the Dirac electrons on the surface. We explain the role of the Dirac electrons in this unconventional behavior and suggest experiments to test our theory.

In the present investigation, various kinds of textures, namely, unidirectional, 8-ground, and random were attained on the die surfaces. Roughness of the textures was varied using different grits of emery papers or polishing powders. Then pins made of Al-4Mg alloys were slid against steel plates at various numbers of cycles, namely, 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 using pin-on-plate reciprocating sliding tester. Tests were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. A constant normal load of 35 N was applied in the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness parameters of the plates were measured using an optical profilometer. In the experiments, it was observed that the coefficient of friction and formation of the transfer layer depend on the die surface textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. More specifically, the coefficient of friction decreases for unidirectional and 8-ground surfaces while for random surfaces it increases with number of cycles. However, the coefficient of friction is highest for the sliding perpendicular to the unidirectional textures and least for the random textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. The difference in friction values between these two surfaces decreases with increasing number of cycles. The variation in the coefficient of friction under both dry and lubrication conditions is attributed to the change in texture of the surfaces during sliding. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The dry sliding wear and friction behaviour of A356 Al alloy and its composites containing 10 and 20 vol.% SiC(P) have been studied using pin-on-disc set up. In these tests, A356 Al alloy and its composites are used as disc whereas brake pad was used in the form of pins. Wear tests were carried out at a load of 192 N and the sliding speed was varied from 1 to 5 m/s. Tests were done for a sliding distance of 15 km. The effects of sliding velocity on the wear rate, coefficient of friction and nature of tribolayers formed on discs have been studied. Wear rates of composites as calculated by weight loss method, found to be negative at sliding speed of more than 2 m/s. Worn surfaces of pins and discs have been analyzed using scanning electron microscope. SEM and EDAX analysis of worn surfaces of composite discs showed formation of tribolayers, consisting of mixture of oxides of Al, Si, Cu, Ca, Ba, Mg, and Fe. In these layers, copper and barium content found to be increase with sliding speed in the case of composites. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present investigation, various kinds of surface textures were attained on the steel plates. Roughness of the textures was varied using various grinding or polishing methods. The surface textures were characterized in terms of roughness parameters using an optical profilometer. Then experiments were conducted using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus to identify the role of surface texture and its roughness parameters on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. In the experiments, a soft polymer (polypropylene) was used for the pin and hardened steel was used for the plate. Experiments were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. The normal load was varied from 1 to 120 N during the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of a transfer layer on the steel plate surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Based on the experimental results, it was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely adhesion and plowing, were controlled by the surface texture of the harder mating surfaces and were less dependent of surface roughness (R(a)) of the harder mating surfaces. The effect of surface texture on the friction was attributed to the variation of the plowing component of friction for different surfaces. Among the various surface roughness parameters studied, the mean slope of the profile, Delta(a), was found to most accurately characterize variations in the friction and wear behavior. Metal-mold reaction during Ti casting in zircon sand molds has been studied using scanning electron microscope, energy and wave length dispersive analysis of X-rays, X-ray diffraction, microhardness measurements, and chemical analysis. Experimental results suggest that oxides from the mold are not fully leached out by liquid Ti, but oxygen is preferentially transferred to liquid Ti, leaving behind metallic constituents in the mold as lower oxides or intermetallics of Ti. The electron microprobe analysis has revealed the depth profile of contaminants from the mold into the cast Ti metal. The elements Si, Zr and O were found to have diffused to a considerable distance within the Ti metals. A possible mechanism has now been evolved in regard to the reactions that occur during casting of Ti in zircon sand molds.

In this work, we present field emission characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-polystyrene composites at various weight fractions along the cross-section of sample. Scanning electron microscope images in cross-sectional view reveal that MWCNTs are homogeneously distributed across the thickness and the density of protruding tubes can be scaled with weight fraction of the composite film. Field emission from composites has been observed to vary considerably with density of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. High current density of 100 mA/cm(2) was achieved at a field of 2.2 V/lm for 0.15 weight fraction. The field emission is observed to follow the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism, however, electrostatic screening is observed to play a role in limiting the current density at higher weight fractions.
