This chapter explores how the Benedictine monks at Holy Cross Monastery in Rostrevor, Northern Ireland, have re-introduced the idea of vocation into the minds of a range of Christians on the island of Ireland. A picture of this new vision of the church in Ireland is painted through sections devoted to 'living ecumenism' and 'creating safe spaces'. The work of the Rostrevor Benedictines may seem limited because of the small scale of the changes among individuals. But Holy Cross is just one of multiple 'extra-institutional' spaces in Ireland's changing religious landscape. From their strategic positions on the margins, extra-institutional expressions of religion may prompt more significant changes in religious practice than initially seem possible.

Among Brethren fisher families in Gamrie, northeast Scotland, professional clergy and written liturgy are held to be blasphemous denials of the true workings of the Holy Spirit. God, I was told, chooses to speak through all born-again (male) persons, unrestricted by the vain repetitions of lettered clerics and their prayer books. In this context, confession of one’s own sin is a private and pointedly interior affair. In Gamrie, not only did every man seek to be his own skipper, but also his own priest. Yet, much of Brethren worship is given over to ritualised acts of confession. So whose sins do the Brethren confess, and to what end? This article argues that among the Brethren of Gamrie, such acts involve confessing not one’s own sin, but the sins of a ‘sick’ and ‘fallen’ world. More than this, by attending to the sociological (as opposed to theological) processes of confessing the sins of another, we see a collapse in the distinction between confiteor and credo that has so dogged anthropological studies of Christianity. In Brethren prayer and bible study, as well as in everyday gossip, the “I confess” of the confiteor and the “I believe” of credo co-constitute one another in and through evidences of the ‘lostness’ of ‘this present age’. But how, if at all, does this solve ‘the problem of sin’? This article suggests that, with the ritual gaze of confession turned radically outward, Brethren announcements of global wickedness enact (in a deliberate tautology) both a totalising call for repentance from sin, and a millenarian creed of the imminent apocalypse. Here, the problem of ritual can be understood as the problem of (partially failed) expiation.

Willingness to lay down one’s life for a group of non-kin, well documented in the
historical and ethnographic records, represents an evolutionary puzzle. Here we
present a novel explanation for the willingness to fight and die for a group, combining evolutionary theorizing with empirical evidence from real-world human groups. Building on research in social psychology, we develop a mathematical model showing how conditioning cooperation on previous shared experience can allow extreme (i.e., life-threatening) pro-social behavior to evolve. The model generates a series of predictions that we then test empirically in a range of special sample populations (including military veterans, college fraternity/sorority members, football fans, martial arts practitioners, and twins). Our results show that sharing painful experiences produces “identity fusion” – a visceral sense of oneness – more so even than bonds of kinship, in turn motivating extreme pro-group behavior, including willingness to fight and die for the group. These findings have theoretical and practical relevance. Theoretically, our results speak to the origins of human cooperation, as we offer an explanation of extremely costly actions left unexplained by existing models.
Practically, our account of how shared dysphoric experiences produce identity fusion, which produces a willingness to fight and die for a non-kin group, helps us better understand such pressing social issues as suicide terrorism, holy wars, sectarian violence, gang-related violence, and other forms of intergroup conflict.

No presente trabalho avalia-se o contributo de uma vasta tradição literária na configuração de um topos/motivo – o locus amoenus – patente na produção dinisiana. Analisaram-se as influências da literatura clássica greco-romana, das Sagradas Escrituras, da literatura italiana, e também da literatura produzida em Portugal desde o final da Idade Média até ao Maneirismo. As obras de dois escritores representativos do Romantismo vintista português, Pároco da Aldeia, de Alexandre Herculano, e Os contos do tio Joaquim, de Rodrigo Paganino, tornaram-se tributárias do topos/motivo. A pesquisa centrou-se na narrativa dinisiana com vista a investigar, por um lado, as relações que o locus amoenus, topos/motivo em estudo, mantém com categorias narrativas contíguas, como sejam o espaço ou a descrição; e, por outro, a aferir o eventual contributo do lugar ameno para a dissipação das fronteiras entre a narrativa e a lírica. Pretendeu-se igualmente, sem desprezar uma inclinação natural de Júlio Dinis para os ambientes campestres, demonstrar a existência de três dimensões fundamentais do lugar ameno: a psicológica, cujas origens se perdem no tempo; a social, vertente inovadora no contexto do tópico abordado; e a simbólica, em que a conexão com o locus horrendus se revelou incontornável. Com o estudo do vocabulário configurador do locus amoenus da produção narrativa dinisiana, reflectiu-se mais aprofundadamente sobre as questões tratadas no cômputo geral desta tese. A complexidade que envolve a tentativa de filiação de Júlio Dinis a um movimento ou escola não fica ainda resolvida com este trabalho. Porém surge a proposta de lançar um novo olhar sobre este assunto, à luz dos pressupostos do movimento alemão Biedermeier. Independentemente dos problemas que se levantam, fica a certeza de que muitos escritores do panorama literário nacional se inspiraram nas obras de Júlio Dinis

Marxian thinking following the TSSI (Temporal Single System Interpretation) of Marx is applied to refute the allegation of a tautology in the resource-based view of the firm--paired with providing an explanation of how and why resources create value--, where resources are synonymous with Marx's categories of constant and variable capital. Refuting the allegation naturally leads to the holy grail of resource-based thinking, i.e. the question of what, conceptually, constitutes a firm's competitive advantage within the industry context. The article achieves its objectives by tying the resource-based view into Marx's theory value.
